Dan,
I feel much better now knowing that you speak for all voting in the entire
USA...NOT. Thumb drives floated around in Fulton County where the votes
changed by several hundred thousand. Observers were obstructed. Votes were
counted after observers were sent home under the guise of a water main break
which was really a bathroom leak early in the day. Then votes were counted
after the observers left. Even CNN in their live feed showed massive vote
swings in PA as well. Did you EVER see vote counts go down? I haven't. I'm
glad you trust computers, but having been around them since they were first put
into general use, I know the old adage "garbage in garbage out" still applies.

Roger

Sorry guys, but I'm not going to continue a waste of time discussion regarding
this election. Yes, the machines should work. And everyone should tell the
truth. And Santa Claus does exist. If you want to join the MSM and say any
contrary opinion is a misstatement, then that is your right. My right is to
express that contrary opinion because I'm tired of the "misstatement,
fraudulent claims, conspiracy theory" responses without a rebuttal.
So, I'm not playing further. You can have your belief and I'll have mine, but

Kaleb,
Some people are drinking the kolaide. GA. reran the same corrupt votes 3 times
without confirming signatures. What's the definition of insanity? The gov and
SOS are linked into a voting machine selection scam and therefore have made no
REAL steps to isolate the illegal votes, especially in Fulton County the home
of our wonderful Atlanta. And yes, it's been proven by forensic techs that our
Dominion machines can and were connected to the internet as well as the

When I had cracked ribs during the 80s, the Dr. gave me some mild pain pills

to breathe deep, it hurt to cough, and it hurt to make any sudden movements,

Well, I hate to even chime in here, but... I know some of you are purist, but

years ago, has run R12, Freeze12, DuraCool, R134a, and something else. The oil

work. My car is proof. It also has only run Dino 15x40 Mobil, no synthetic.

I had two 1964 Corvair Monzas when I was in college. They were great cars. I
lived in the country and they handled curvy roads great. Ralph was full of it
and like people of today, wrote a book to make a name and money. Who cares
about the truth. Being so low to the ground, it was almost impossible to roll
one and the handling was great. So, my experience with two was that the term
unsafe was totally wrong. Now, in a head on collision with a rear engine, the
front folded like a Volkswagen, but that's another story. I loved the two I
had, great drivers with great power.

Guys, look at the WHO site. They have scared everyone with their pandemic
stuff, but even they think it will be gone, like the flu, as soon as the temps
get into the 70s/80s (yes, root for global warming). The big worry is getting
big pharma to get some treatment drugs before next Winter/flu season.
Personally, I think this was planned/orchestrated by the Chinese, Soros, Iran,
CCF, and others to get back at USA policies which have made us a better
country. I think everyone should grab their butts, stop overreacting, and get
on with life. I worry more about illegal drunk drivers with no insurance than
I do about the Mexican Beer virus. Like 911, our lack of intestinal fortitude

2020-03-07 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
According to the CDC for 2018, the USA had 14.9 flu deaths per 100,000
population. The 2017-2018 flu season was severe for all populations and
resulted in an estimated 959,000 hospitalizations and 61,099 deaths. I
seriously doubt that the Corona Beer virus will come close to these numbers.
BUT, it will result in a higher national debt, more people making money from
speaking about it, and other means of scaring the pubic. And if FL drops off

2020-02-15 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kevin,
Yes, you can apply that money to a 240D, but you'll still have a low power,
smaller, worse handling vehicle than the 1980 300SD. And you can buy a kit on
eBay for $450 to replace the servo system. I have a 1980 300SD which now has
around 420,000 miles. I finally replaced the trans about 2 years ago. It
still has the original exhaust system and has never had the head off or any
other major work. I had it unregistered for about a year, sitting in the
garage, but it's the wife's car and she wanted it drive-able, so I've started
getting things back in order. All that remains is getting the AC back in order
when it gets warm. There is no comparison between the ride of a 240D and a
300SD. Yes, the price may be a bit high, but if all is OK, start negotiating.
I got mine at 186,000 miles over 20 years ago and I've never regretted it.

[MBZ] OT - 1950s Cultural Question

2020-02-06 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Dan,
My view might be different as I grew up in the country and somewhat close to
"smaller" big cities (no NY or LA). It was my experience that if you didn't
show by 5:00PM you were out of luck. In the 60's grocery and some other
businesses started staying open to 6, 7, 8, and finally 9:00PM into the 70's.
I'm sure this might also have differed by size of city and type of business.
However, I always thought that those times were more to fit the TV show plot
than to fit reality.
Just my thoughts...

I realized I left out the assumption per your email that you would do a fresh
install on the new SSD drive of Win 10 Pro. That way when you move the apps,
etc. from the old drive to the SSD all should be well. Check to be sure
PCMover will go from Win7 to Win10. It's been a few years since I've used it,
but I'll have to again soon as I'm moving my apps, etc. from my old Vostros to
the newer Vostros.

Sorry to hear you are still having problems. Do you have another PC? If so
you can do the following. Put your secondary drive (your original) into the
second PC. Hopefully, it will boot ok. If it does, you can use PCMover to
move all your apps from the second PC back to your original PC which would save
you a lot of time. PCMover doesn't move the OS, only the apps and files and
settings. I still think there is something about your Ultimate version of Win7
that Win10 Pro does not like. I've used Win10 Pro now for over 3 years and I
like it better than Win7 Pro and I really liked Win7 Pro.

I sent you some file attachments, but neither my email or the files seem to
have made it through to you. If you get them, try the Upgrade Assistant
(original). It was good at finding and showing actual reasons that your PC is
not ready for an upgrade. It was the reason I found out that one of my Vostros
needed a BIOS upgrade first.
And for the other naysayers, I've always upgraded because it keeps all my
settings and I don't have to waste time creating them again. Also, I first
used Macs in the early 90s. They had HD controller problems and other issues.
Yes they had good graphics, but... We all like what we use. I just don't use
odd or non mainstream APPs. Not worth the OS problems they can cause.

What was the error code this time? And please look for a log file for more

have any "strange apps" that Win10 needs to make compatible from Win7? Take
everything out of your startup folder and retry. You might also go to Task
Mgr. and look for any odd services that my be running. We have all added lots
of things to our PCs and hope that Windows will be happy with them. Remember
Win 3 that had all the DLL problems caused by outside vendors and their Apps.

Re: [MBZ] windows 10 upgrade on PC

2020-01-04 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,
Did you check for an installation or error log or event log that might give you
the exact cause for the load failure? If you have Ultimate, you will end up
with Win10 Pro, not Ultimate. Are you certain that your Win7 ultimate product
key is a valid key? I ordered a thumb drive from a guy on eBay that will
install Win10 or do fixes to existing installs of Win10 (I think it was around
$11). If you can get Win10 installed, go to a junk computer store or Goodwill
and copy the product key off a box and use it. MS will take the valid key and
give you a new digital key. I have a Dell460 that I got last summer, supposed
to have Win10Pro but it was Win10 Enterprise without a valid product key.
Since I can't get a valid key, I may just do a Win10 Pro upgrade on it to make
it valid.
You need to find out specifically what is blocking the upgrade. As I said
before, it could be the need for a BIOS upgrade as it will prevent the upgrade
also.

[MBZ] OT - Win10 Va Win 7

2019-12-28 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Larry,
I pass on to you what I've told before. I have two old Dell Vostros with Dual
Core processors. They were originally 4mb memory which Dell said couldn't be
upgraded because they never certified it as well as not certifying Win10. I
upgraded both to Win10 back in 2016, I think, first year available.
Now, I upgraded the memory on both to 8mb because I could and it worked fine.
I upgraded the processor on one easily. I added an SSD drive to one easily.
They both work fine but are getting old, 2007 and 2008 vintage. So, in January
I plan to move everything to two Dell Vostro 470s (2013-2014 vintage) with I
acquired on eBay for very reasonable prices. They will have i5 3rd gen
processors, 8mb of memory, and 1 or 2 terabyte of disk space running Win10
which I've already loaded using the free upgrade.
If you want optimal performance from Win10, you should upgrade memory to 8mb if
possible, while 4mb will run good. A 3.0 ghz processor or close is good
whether dual core, i3, or i5, or i7. Again, changing a processor takes about
20 minutes. Upgrading memory takes about 5-10 minutes.
If you can, make upgrades to your PC first. You might also have to go back to
the PC vendor and get a BIOS upgrade as I did for my Dell 200, but not the Dell
220. Then upgrade to Win10. When it asks for a product key, give it the
product key for your Win7 and Microsoft will issue you a digital key which
works just fine. You can contact me off list if you have any questions.
Good luck and best wishes,
Roger

Re: [MBZ] Cell phones, long post

2019-12-20 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Well, I'll add some info too. I've used ConsumerCellular for a long time
now and have not been disappointed. Of my over 50 years dealing with
businesses, they have by far the best customer service. I use two older
iPhones and they work fine on the road. I use the ATT sims. My home is in a
low area so I only get 1 bar at home, but still useable. I'm adding an outside
antennae with inside booster to bring the inside signal up to 3-4 bars with my
goal to drop my two land lines. I tried WIFI calling via Tmobile, but it was
terrible so I went back to the ATT sim. I've ordered a stronger inside
antennae to mate with the booster which should help even more.
Before CC, I had Verizon and their predecessor for over 10years. Cost and fees
finally forced me to change, plus their customer service was never good.
Just some personal info.
Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Who Has Direct HVAC Experience?

2019-12-18 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Dan,
One last simple test. You should have a simple toggle light switch somewhere
near the furnace/ac. Turn it off. Turn the thermostat off and set the temp to
as low as it will go. Let this set for a few minutes. Turn the switch on at
the furnace/ac. Reset the thermostat to on and gradually bring the temp back
to where you want it. I have a 20 yr. old Armstrong and I've had to do this
the 2-3 times I've had to replace the thermostat. Seems taking all the power
off both the furnace system computer board and the thermostat forces a sort of
reset of the system and puts everything back in sync. It's a cheap test. If
this doesn't work, I'd suggest a hard start switch on the compressor as they
get weak over the years and need more electricity to start.
Good luck and best wishes.

You can find people who sell a hard drive with Win10 preloaded on eBay for not
too much money. Check their reviews as sometimes Win10 is loaded but the
license number is not valid. It will work, but constantly remind you to
activate Windows. Or you might try some of the parts sellers on eBay and email
them about a drive with Win10 loaded and activated.

Re: [MBZ] I hate windows

2019-12-14 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
It's unfortunate that some of you hate Windows. I've used it since it was a
separate app that ran on DOS. Win 3.1 was deviled by uncontrolled DLL files.
Win 95 tried to be compatible with everyone. Win 98 was good. Win XP was
really good. Rarely used Win 2000. Win 7 was extremely stable. But I like
Win 10 best of all. I get periodic updates that load at night with no issues.
I run it with Norton antivirus provided to me free by Comcast. Norton co-exits
with Windows Defender both running together. I have never had a problem. I
run Win 10 on two Dell Vostro business DTs (a 200 and 220) which I'll be
converting over to Dell Vostro 470 business DTs. I don't expect any troubles.
I don't run any odd software apps so I don't have problems. Get back to the
basics and life is simpler.
Good luck and best wishes,

[MBZ] 1980 300SD Drive train vibration

2019-12-11 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Thanks to all for their input and suggestions. More detail: the rear axles
and boots look ok, no slack there, the tranny was a used unit purchased in
Arizona and installed 2 years ago (probably less than 1,000 miles since
installed) and it's ok except the vac from the IP to the modulator can't be
adjusted, yea, needed piece is NLA.
So, can the center support, flex, etc. be easily replaced? My Indie started
talking about pulling the drive shaft, cutting off the ujoints, rebalancing the
drive shaft and the putting everything back...a rather large amount of money
for a 1980 car considering I've already put around $4k into revitalizing this
car.
Any additional thoughts anyone? Just trying to get back to a smooth ride and
still have money for diesel fuel :-))
Thanks,
Roger

[MBZ] 1980 300SD Drive train vibration

2019-12-11 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Time to consult the brain trust. I've been getting my 1980 300SD revitalized
and back into driving condition. Almost everything is done, except, it still
has a vibration somewhere in the drive train when accelerating. It starts at
around 40mph. My Indie replaced the rear flex disk which reduced the vibration
some, but not all. When you are coasting or take your foot off the
accelerator, the vibration stops. This seems to rule out wheel bearings and
axles, etc. So, could this be the center support bearings or universal joints
or what?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [MBZ] Bosch Group 49R Batteries

2019-11-05 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Yes, they have a terrible website. It said my local store didn't have this
battery, but it did. I just went to the search line on my browser in put in
the line above. One of the "deals" was for Pepboys. I clicked the link and
got the online special. It is a group 49 with the POS on the right. It works
in both my 116 and 123 cars. Anyway, if you need it, there it is. It has a 3
year warranty, but I've always gotten between 5-8 years with these batteries in
the 617 diesels. A difference now and the older batteries is that you can no
longer add water as there are no plugs to remove to add water. So, maybe they
won't last as long as the older version.

[MBZ] Bosch Group 49R Batteries

2019-11-05 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
In case anyone needs this battery for an older diesel, Pepboys has a really
good deal right now. If you do a web search for this battery and select the
Pepboys deal, you get the following: Battery is $179 in store, but $159 on the
web only. Then you get a $40.00 instant discount, so it's only $119 plus tax.
It comes with free installation and no core charge. I took them my old core
and picked up the battery this evening which I'll install myself. So if you
need this battery, hit the web now.
Good luck and save,

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300SD

2019-10-23 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Andrew, we've owned this car since about 1996. It was originally purchased by
a lady doctor when new and she kept it meaning to give it to one of her
kids...but they didn't want it. Anyway, right before we got it from a small
car lot, she had had it to the local MB dealership in Atlanta for a complete
service (around $900 in 1996). We've taken it on numerous trips and my wife
drove it daily to work for many years. Now that we are retired, it has been
sitting mostly for the past several years. I'm getting ready to reactivate it
with new brake lines, hoses, belts, valve adjustment just to start. Later, I
plan a complete front suspension work, a new AC kit, and new rear axles. It
will cost a little, but the car is still great inside (had the leather seats
and pads replaced after we got it) and the body is solid. I replaced the
transmission 2 years ago with one that had 95,000 miles on it. The engine
starts quickly and it has great power. I installed new tires last year. It's
a great road trip car and the mileage is good (28-30mpg). As I tell people,
it's just getting broke in. I could see it going to a million.

Thanks for asking and pardon my long reply.

[MBZ] Which ML350 years to consider

2019-09-27 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Hi folks,

Per the boss, yes my wife, I need to replace the 2008 Ford Escape with a
better riding vehicle. I'm thinking about an ML350, preferably a diesel,
Bluetec I guess. Per my retired wallet purchasing ability, I'm looking at
between 2008 and 2012. They don't seem to hold very much resale value here in
the Atlanta area which would be good for me. The Buick Enclave holds its value
better than the ML around Atlanta, not sure why.

Anyway, any recommendations, models to not considered, problem issues,
etc. would be greatly appreciated.

2019-09-22 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
It might be the Frig Kaleb. Several years ago, I had a GFI that would trip
when the Microwave was on with the coffee pot. I'd reset it and days later it
would trip again. So, I replaced the GFI and the new one tripped as well.
Some time later I purchased and installed a new counter top microwave. Problem
solved as the GFI has not tripped in several years. So, maybe it's time to
have someone look at your Frig (icemaker, compressor, defrost coils, etc.). I
have several GFIs in my house, all over 20yrs. old and never a problem.

Just some additional info.

Well, I'll give you another data point from years ago. Back around 2000, I

so nothing there. I tried a used one, but as the SD was still in change, the
prior years didn't work correctly. Finally, I found one for the 1980 at ADSIT.
The price was more than a used one on eBay, but far less than a new MB unit.
I got it, installed it and almost 20 years later it's still on the car working
properly. I had no problems with ADSIT, a smooth transaction. There's an old

Re: [MBZ] W123 FB Idiot(s)

2019-08-03 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Well, I'll add a little of what I know second hand from my BIL who drove diesel
trucks as a business for over 40 years, now retired. In the early days, you
could slightly increase the fuel and get more power, plus more smoke. But, the
new trucks are computer controlled, so the computer regulates everything to
either increase power when needed or to increase fuel economy when more power
is not needed. Refer to articles about long haul trucks that go over
mountainous areas and then flat lands. They can be sent computer signals to
regulate how the truck will react as needed based upon the terrain.

Now, I'm not a truck driver, just passing on what I've been told and what I've
read.

Gee, would you guys consider getting off W123 FB? It doesn't seem like you are

Thanks guys, now if anyone else knows anything about Smartcar tranny problems,

Re: [MBZ] ebay

2019-07-07 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
In Georgia, yet another greedy politician state, they passed a law last year
that if you have more than $500,000 per year in internet sales, you are
required to collect tax on those sales. It's just more greedy political stuff.
We need to all stop carping about this stuff and start voting these greedy
joke politicians out of office, regardless of which party they represent. None
of them care about you and me, the taxpayers, it's become about getting more
money to spend at the federal, state, and local levels. Most of these tax
dollars do little good for the average taxpayer. Again, stop carping and VOTE.

[MBZ] Anyone Going to the PnP?

2019-05-25 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Dan,

I don't know if this will help in your situation but... Years ago I
needed a part (spring) for the mirror on my 1980 300SD. After inquiring for
help on the "other list", Stu said it's a kit. I went to the Atlanta MB
dealership and was told the same. However, my Indie found the part number for
me in his old parts catalogue. I went to the MB dealership again and asked the
parts guy to order that part for me. It took 2 weeks from Germany, but in
total was only a fraction of the cost of the whole kit for my driver side
mirror. If you can get the part number, you might give it a try.

Just a suggestion to help.

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum leak no booster no shut off.

2019-05-09 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
If the vac pump had gone bad, you would have shut off, brake booster problem,
and tranny shift problem. I've had this before on a 617. It sounds like you
also may have moved the little linkage pieces on the shut off valve on top of
the IP as well as knocked off the vac line. Those vac lines are a PITA,
especially compared to the 300SD where the lines are not in the way. I'm
always extremely careful when I change the oil filter on my 83 300D because of
the tight vac line clearance.

Hope this helps.

[MBZ] 1980 300SD W116

2019-04-28 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Dan,

I would go for it before someone else. The car looks great. The servo
is a 1/2 hour replacement. If the fan is bad, it's an easy replacement via the
glove box. Check the front suspension and the rear axles. It might need a
valve adjustment. If the power is low, it's probably filters or the overboost
switch gets carboned up. My 80 300SD has over 425,000 miles and will still
crank up and run although it spends most of its time in the garage these days.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.

Good luck and best wishes,

Re: [MBZ] Bundt Wheels

Sorry Bob and Dwight, but Bundt's are the best. No paint to peel off, not as
heavy as the steel wheels behind the old fashioned hubcaps, and easier to clean
than the many small hole later wheels. We all have our preferences. So why
try to run down what someone else likes. I wouldn't say bad things about your
hubcap love except you guys expressed dislike for my bundt's which I have on
two cars and have had for over 20 years. In the future maybe we should all
keep our dislikes to ourselves, except for parts, etc. Appearance items are a
matter of personal taste and should be left at that. Just my opinion, others

Kaleb,

I'm not sure what has been swapped. Those seats look exactly like the
ones in my 1980 300SD and they are original and they are leather. Of course,
my wife paid around $3K to replace the leather and pads front and rear less
than a year after we purchased the car. Yes, it's her car so I had to grin and
bare it. The seats are still great tho' after over 20 years. I never cared
for the wider, flatter 126 seats that always seemed to split at the seams.

[MBZ] Fwd: 1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD

2019-02-09 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Bob,

  I have a 1980 300SD (over 420,00 miles) and a 1983 300D (over 360,000
miles), both with the 617 engines. The good about this car is it must be an
early 1981 as it has the 116 seats and not the 126 zippers, waiting to rip
apart seats. As to the wheels, I've used the allows for over 20 years with no
problems. Personally don't like the chrome as they gave these models a pimp
mobile look. If it starts good, shifts good, etc., then I'd look under the
plastic sides for any hidden rust and look at the suspension for any excess
wear etc. If all is ok, the AC should be an easy fix. Adjust the valves first.

As to the price, it should be around $2800-3200 for this condition, after
all it's still a very old car with old parts. However, at that mileage, you've
got years left on that engine. I realize there are those on this list that
want a bottom feeder price for anything they buy. Just look close and pay
accordingly. I probably paid more for both of my cars than this list would
have approved. But, I've gotten over 20 years each with nothing beyond the
normal items as they've aged, and I've immensely enjoyed both cars and still do.

So, good luck and best wishes. Most of all look close and make your own
decisions.

[MBZ] Buying a battery for a diesel

2019-01-16 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Craig,

Try Sears. They have some good prices and they are trying hard to stay
alive. They give you dollars back to use on future purchases, etc. You might
help keep an American icon alive. I purchased 3 sets of tires last year, good
prices and I'm still very satisfied with the tires for wear, ride, etc. Just a
suggestion.

Re: [MBZ] "WHY" classic Mercedes are worth saving- the bleak future of driving

2019-01-04 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
I totally agree about throw away cars, etc. I'm not referring to MBs, but my
2008 Ford Escape with the V6 engine is really expensive to repair (at least for
old SS guys like me). Pep Boys gave me a "deal" to do the tuneup (just plugs),
valve cover gaskets, and PC valve. I paid almost $900, but I believe that Ford
would have charged closer to $1200-1500 for this work. Pep Boys wanted over
$100 each for the coil packs. I had them done at a small garage up in S. Ohio
for less than $50 each and about $100 for labor. Unfortunately, had to go
North as my wife's Mother passed on the 20th which was a real downer for
Christmas. Anyway, the Escape is running pretty good now, but every repair is
close to a scrap it and get something else.

[MBZ] Oil Prices

2019-01-03 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Sorry guys, I correct myself (old age thing). I use 5w20 full synthetic Mobil
1 in the Atlanta area. I use it because Ford stamped it in big yellow numbers
on the oil cap. The Ford dealer shop guy once told me the Escape V6 needed
really thin oil for the ultra small oil ports/paths within the block. But the
price is still the same at Dollar General and mcparts. I get Pep Boys to
change oil for me. They send a coupon, charge a few bucks more for the extra
quart, but in total I'm better off. I don't have a "garage" for car work, they
check my tires and rotate and check all the other fluids, etc. So, I end up
paying them little more than the oil and filter price for their time and labor.
 Works for me anyway.

[MBZ] Oil Prices

2019-01-02 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Well, I throw this out so you guys can stop arguing about energy prices, etc.
etc. Here in the Atlanta area, my mcparts stores charge $9.99 for a quart of
Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W20 which I use in my Ford Escape. I was in my local Dollar
General store and noticed that they have the same oil for $5.95 a quart. Wow,
I had seen it at Home Depot for $7.95 a quart, but never thought Dollar General
would undercut them all by that much.

What are you guys paying? And please don't start arguing about which oil to
use :-)))

Well, I guess we are on different topics/issues/views. I'm talking antiques
and appreciation for the "value of old things". I'm not talking about
artsy/craftsy things that are new, regardless of the techniques used to create
them. I'm glad there is an arts and crafts movement and young people are
involved. But I'm in to antiques, not arts and crafts. As always, I'm not
pushing an argument, just stating my view, which may or may not agree with

So Curt, are 3 people all you can find as examples? Yes, there are a few
younger folks that still appreciate the "old things", but I see everyday the
many, many, many younger folks that do not. If more of them did, my sales
would be really good, but they aren't. And prices are down on eBay, at antique
stores, auctions, etc. Young folks want disposable. They don't want to polish
silver, hand wash glasses, etc. Now, they'll take care of that phone or
computer, but heck with the really valuable stuff. Anyway, keep looking, I
hope you find more to count.

[MBZ] Value of Old Things

2018-12-08 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Dan,

What you mentioned about furniture and other old things is sadly true.
Young people today want disposable dinnerware, less furniture, and lack any
idea of quality and the craftsmanship it takes to create quality. Our sales
have declined over the last few years. We never really dealt in furniture,
especially big stuff. We see it at auctions and estate sales and it goes for
really cheap prices...sad to see. Young folks display big TVs, electronic
gizmos, etc. etc. , things that wear out and are disposable. They use cheap
dinnerware and flatware and glasses, none of which need a nice hutch,
sideboard, or cabinet to display. Holding a fine piece of silver flatware in
your hand and comparing it to the cheap Wal-Mart offerings is amazing. I help
my wife polish silverware when we get new pieces to keep or to sell. It's
pleasing to see the craftsmanship that went into things made in the 1700s,
1800s, and early 1900s. The feel is just amazing.

So, if you have some old nice items, value them, use them, and display
them. Let them bring you joy, especially at the holidays.

[MBZ] The pnp 116.

2018-12-08 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,

If you go back, could you check the condition of the rear axles, boots,
etc.? My 80 300SD will need those before I start using it again. The last
time I could find someone selling them, they wanted a small fortune and then
I'd still have to pay my Indie to install them.

Thanks,

Sorry Mitch, but I didn't tag you to this thread. I merely started it as
somewhat sad and humorous regarding some of the topics that arise. Similar to
the other list where they get off on topics like wine tasting, cheese
favorites, etc. Sometimes you think you are on one of the cooking networks. I
realize we are all getting older so there isn't a lot of MB work, etc. to
discuss. As to me, my 80 and 83 and currently sitting for awhile. I will
probably sell the 83 300D and at some point have some repairs made to the 80
300SD and put it back on the road.

As to deer, just a suggestion. I grew up and learned to drive "up North" and
currently drive in the South. When learning up North, the main issue was to
constantly scan the sides of the road, peripheral vision is a real benefit.
Now I continue to do the same in the South. I've been lucky having driven for
over 50 years and never hit a deer. I just hope to stay lucky.

Well, all I know is what the local Atlanta station reported. The kits have
come under criticism in other states for their lack of reliability. And from
the TV clip from the officer's camera, the candy was pink, not blue. But then
my eyes may not be what they used to be. My point is that if you intend to put
someone in jail, the police should be at least close to 100% certain they have
the right person. Otherwise, let them go. This woman couldn't afford the bail
so she stayed in jail.

Now the old fellow may be guilty, but consider this. In Georgia, a woman is
suing one of the counties and the company that makes the field drug test kit.
She spent two months in jail before the state crime lab confirmed what she told
the police officers...it was cotton candy. Hope she uses the tax money wisely
and hopefully the company that makes the test kits will go out of business. If
it happened to this woman, it could happen to anyone. Weird, weird, world.

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** McDonald's

2018-12-01 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Yes, the old days. I grew up the Huntington area of southern WV. The first
McD anywhere around was there. You walked up to the outside window to order.
There was no where to sit so you ate in your car. The restrooms were on the
outside. And they did have two arches, but I like to joke that I've eaten
there since only one arch. It was a great place to take a date after a movie.
Hamburger, fries, and a soft drink were very affordable for a high school kid.

Anyway, McD been good to me. I hope each of you have a fond memory of
somewhere you ate when young.

tainted by "fine dining". I know we all like what we like, but it seems this
is another low point to be picking on McD. Just my opinion as usual, your

[MBZ] Quote without comment

2018-11-25 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
I sincerely hope most of this is wrong and will soon dissolve into its own
uncertainty. I was in the computer world in the early 80's and saw all the
predictions and forecasts as to how computers would replace everything we know
and "help us" to do everything. Artificial intelligence would be our savior.
All of this has not made us a better society, but rather, has contributed to
our social demise. Computers will never replace the human brain. Yes, they
can be faster, but faster is not always better. This is only my opinion and
views. But I hope we can save ourselves before computers destroy our future.
Remember, the original intent of computers was to do repetitive tasks faster
and with less error and to access information faster than humans. Personally,
I don't think they will ever be able to "replace" the human brain or human
memory.

I wish you all a safe and Happy Holidays,

Dan,

I've used PC Mover to move from one PC/OS to another several times
quickly and with no problems. I've also used the clone software which came
with an SSD to move a regular HD to a SSD with no problems. The software will
ask how you want to handle drive size mismatches. Windows is not Mac, but for
us lifetime Windows users, we are glad it's not. I run Win10 on two 10+ year
old Dells with no problems, one of which was moved from a regular to an SSD
drive. And if I had to work with a Mac, I'd probably have some of the same
dislikes and problems.

To all, Happy Holidays, and good luck with whatever OS you use.

Re: [MBZ] If not the SD....

2018-11-15 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Well, for my .02, first rent the type of vehicle you want and take it on a
drive of over 2-3 hours. Then see how your butt and back and legs feel. I
have a 2008 Ford Escape that is a good little SUV, but the seats suck big time.
Great for short trips, but long trips wear you out. If the vehicle you want
is built on a truck frame, run away. And look for a vehicle with seats that
have padding at least 6 inches and good lumbar support. Then you will be
happy. You can fix the mechanicals, but you can't replace bad seats without
ruining the interior appearance. My no joy is that Ford did not offer a better
seat for the 2008 Escape.

Again, just some extra thoughts.

Good luck and best wishes,

Re: [MBZ] Septic problem

2018-11-08 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Scott,

I just use the powder packs from Home Depot, probably available
elsewhere. The material is inside plastic that dissolves in the commode
releasing the enzyme powder which you then flush. Then I just buy whatever
root killer is currently available. I agree about the bleach and other similar
items as they tend to kill the bacteria you need in the septic tank to dissolve
the "stuff". I clean plates in the trash and the only food particles go out
through the dishwasher which is small enough to increase the bacteria, but not
big enough to plug up the drain field.

As to redoing the drain field, you can add a large dry well as I've had to
do many years ago and it solved a bad problem on a 30 year old drain field.

Good luck Kaleb,

Re: [MBZ] Septic problem

2018-11-08 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,

Stop pouring old motor oil down the drain, it's not good for the septic
:-))) Anyway, I've had my septic tank/field in place for 19+ years and never
pumped the tank. I do put enzymes down it 3 times a year and root killer at
least every 2 years. It seems to work fine so far. I do have a clean out cap
outside should I need it. I've never had a problem so far. Rules: no grease
or grease like substances down the kitchen drain, get and use the enzyme
powder, and use root killer. I do this always and I've never had a problem.
Maybe I'm lucky or maybe this works.

Hope you solve your problem and good luck.

Re: [MBZ] OT: flickering house lights

2018-09-30 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Mitch,

Thank you for finally taking the prudent and safe approach. The utility
should NOT charge you as they are obligated, just as the gas and water, to
insure that they are providing safe service to your house (and even inside in
case of the gas utility). If they can't find fault outside, then have an
electrician standing by to check inside as it might be something that will
require coordination between the utility and an electrician to fix. This will
save time and mainly it will "keep you safe from harm". I've been nipped by
220v before so I have a strong and healthy respect for electricity.

Re: [MBZ] OT: flickering house lights

2018-09-28 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Rick,

I hate to recommend the obvious, but have the power company come and
confirm their wiring before you tear up your electrical panel. Years ago, I
lived in a subdivision with underground utilities. In grading the lot next
door, the developer pierced the line into my house. I lost one of the phases
which took out half of my circuits and damaged my furnace. The developer paid
for the furnace repair and the power company came and replaced the underground
line. Since you've said you have old wiring on the pole into your house, I'd
suggest you get the power company to look. After all, they don't want a
problem that could damage your house either. Or, do the "manly" thing and call
an electrician. I know that wouldn't sit well with all the testosterone on
this list, but it's the prudent and safer thing to do.

Good luck and best wishes,

I'm curious as to when you guys are going to publish your "Arm Chair Price

worth what a buyer will pay because they want the item and have the funds...not
what others think it's worth. I know you guys are lonesome and in some cases

[MBZ] Low E Finnish diesel substitute made from animal fats

Well, this is the perfect solution for the USA and maybe the world. Get all
the plastic surgeons to save all the fat they suck out of humans trying to make
them "pretty". Use that fat to make biodiesel. The fat would be free and no
people or animals would need to be killed to provide it. If you've been to any
mall or restaurant lately, you've seen a lot of fat people waddling around.
Let's see if we can use all that fat to gain our energy independence. We could
probably use it to generate electricity as well, save the birds, roof tops,
etc. This sounds like a real winning solution.

Maybe these were islands and islands sometimes sink over time, plate

some of those changes result in what is sometimes deemed as climate change.
Part of my property used to be under several feet of water. It had nothing to
do with climate change, but rather with beaver dams. So called scientists
quite often don't look deep enough at the root cause of issues. But I firmly
