Re: [MBZ] Good spots for lunch and dinner in SF

2020-03-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Actually, there are two Muni employees on board. A gripman and a conductor. You
need a conductor to handle the fares of people who get on between the ends of
the lines.

When I lived there a monthly Muni pass was like $25, meaning you could ride
unlimited times. A single ticket for the touristas was like $3-$4, if I recall.
I rode the cable cars every chance I got. They’re a great way to get around
that part of the city, and the gripmen are pretty entertaining.

I got to talk to them on occasion when things were slow, and the stories they
would tell about the Muni employees that tried to get on as gripmen (they have
an open recruitment internally twice a year) were pretty funny. Realize that
these are Muni employees, the same people who drive city busses. According to
the things I was was told, the washout rate of applicants was pretty high.
Length of service for gripmen is the highest in any division of the Muni, that
is, these are guys and gals who have gotten into this division and stayed for
much of their careers. Lots of physical wear and tear, like torn ligaments,
rotator cup stuff, etc. It’s very, very physical.

And they get the exact same pay as a bus driver.

The cable cars can disengage the cable. The cable never stops but the cars do.
I was on the cable car once when a lady in a Land Rover kept getting in our
lane. The gripman was ringing the bell like crazy, I remember he called out
"You're making my day lady!" Its hard work starting and stopping the
machine. Finally she had the ass end of her car in our lane and he just bumped
her out of the way. The cable cars are kind of armored on the corners, probably
for that kind of event.

Either they stop if they can or you get hit. They have accidents with motor
vehicles pretty regularly from what I recall.

Did you ride a cable car? If not, you missed out on a pretty cool experience.
Especially if if you did the Powell/Mason line, as it has some seriously steep
hills. Riding on the running boards is not for the faint of heart.

So one thing I wondered while out here but didn’t encounter. On some of these
streets you are driving over the track for the cable car. What happens if one
is coming at you and you can’t move over?

Louisville had the very old fashioned trolleys during the 1930s. One wire, one
trolley, and I guess the railroad type tracks down the middle of streets served
as the ground.
Bad boys would hang on the back, and when the trolley stopped again they would
pull the trolley off the overhead wire. All the lights would go out, the boys
would run, and the motorman would have to go to the back of the trolley and put
the little wheel back on the overhead wire. That was done by a cable that wound
up on a large spring loaded pulley on the back.

good ol Robert mcnamara. "what's good fer GM is good fer the US."   so
GM/gummit got Lost angels to abandon the subway, Lektrik trolleys,
lektrik busses, and spread the curse all over the USA.  Probably every
major city had Lectric trolleys, trains and busses.   There was a
Lektrik railway from Ft Dodge to Des moines.  Even small towns of 5000
or so had lektric trolleys and/or busses.   I remember them well in
Chitcago, where lektrik trains ran all over too, as well as the busses
and trolleys.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-8b6uvi18g   The first trolley is from
Montreal, Que.  and the next, orange, is from St Paul, Mn.

2020-03-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I hadn't realized where the Tenderloin was until I was looking at the map just
now, its really not that bad an area. Actually none of San Francisco is
anywhere I'd consider terribly dangerous. The Haight is a little sketch but
really not terribly unsafe, pay attention at all times, don't leave your car
unlocked, normal city precautions...

Welcome to the way things used to work. And work well.

Catenary system, or “overhead wire” as it’s also known. Common method of
providing power to trolleys, trains, and at one time, even busses. Go to Europe
and you’ll see most of the trains have these as they’re electric and powered
through the wires.

Many major cities had this setup for their trolleys or busses until the 1950s,
and some later (I recall Cincinnati having them when I was a kid.)

Or the cool old trolleys. We saw them both times we were there but never
managed to get to that side of the city to ride them.
Go see Lombard st, the twistiest road in the USA. IIRC it goes up Russian hill,
turn left at the top and again IIRC there are a couple really great ice cream
shops on the hill.
Like Dan mentioned the other day you can walk up Russian hill and get on the
cable car faster than you can get on at the bottom. Its a pretty tough walk
though, theres a reason they use cable cars. We walked (slowly) up once. About
halfway up we were taking a break and watched a motorcycle pull a wheelie up
the hill. Pretty insane.

If he wants sketchy he can head west from H-A to the Tenderloin District.
Free needles, just pick them up off the street.

Chinatown rocks, even if you don’t eat anything. I loved just wandering

Re: [MBZ] Good spots for lunch and dinner in SF

2020-03-10 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
After a left fisherman’s wharf I stumbled across Chinatown. Talk about a 3rd
world looking area. Lots of orientals running around in masks. Past Chinatown
toward the highway there was a massive amount of cops surrounding a large group
of people. No idea what that was all about. They have these city busses running
all over down there that are hooked up to these wires that run overhead. Really
looks like a mess.

Dang, I forgot about Alcatraz. That’s a great tour, especially the audio tour.
They have former inmates who narrate it, makes it really cool.

You’ll never find parking in SFO. Best to dump the car at a common point and
use the cable cars or a cab.

The all want everything free.  In the real world, the place where
everything is free is prison or slavery.   So the kollyfoneyians vote
for morons who promise free stuff, but enslave/imprison them.
Unfortunately, the goobers forgot to prevent the inmates from
escaping.   So they flee to free states, and the wetbacks of every COO
stream in for the freebies.

OK, I'll concede on that. Had a buddy in San Diego, we went on a camping trip
near Mono Lake and hot springs that was pretty awesome. I'm focusing on SF and
LA.

Just certain parts. I’ll take the Sierras and most of northern CA (like
Redding, Yreka, the northern coast) any time.

Eastern WA wants to lose Western WA (but not the coastal areas) just as badly
as eastern OR wants to lose western OR. (Coastal OR is considerably more
built-up
than coastal WA, so there's some question there.) Same exact rural vs urban
problems.

I propose that the simplest/best solution is to form ONE new State: Portlandia,
which
would contain the whole Salem-to-Bellingham high-density strip, including
Portland
and Seattle. I name I chose for it should be obvious.

I have spent some time in SF, and was surprised and disappointed in their
Chinatown, Having worked next door to NYC's Chinatown. Much better selection
and food in NY than SF, IMO.

If possible, I would prefer never to step foot in Calif again. CA sucks.

As I said earlier, if you’ve got time do the tourista stuff, it’s fun and
entertaining and you’ll be surrounded by crowds and homeless selling
sweatshirts when the sun goes down and the temperature drops 20 degrees.

Fisherman’s Wharf, Boudin’s (bakery) and a sourdough bread bowl of clam
chowdah, ride the Mason/Powell cable car line, drive across the Golden Gate to
the Marin Highlands and look at the city if it’s not fogged in, etc., etc.

[MBZ] Good spots for lunch and dinner in SF

2020-03-09 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I’m discovering it would be nice to be out here longer than 2 days, but it’s a
work trip. I’m
Planning on heading into town tomorrow afternoon. Should I head to the
fisherman wharf area? It’s also not much fun when you are by yourself so I tend
to just stick to places close to hotel or chain places.
