about $15 delivered. I somewhat sloppily sprayed it on the tach prongs

Re: [MBZ] Deoxit question

2016-10-17 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
That's worth a try (DeOxIt) but I'm skeptical that will work. It's a very
simple system, just the magnetic pick-up sensor on the engine, the can
(tachometer amplifier) and the tachometer, and the wiring and a fuse.
Change all the fuses? Check the grounds? There is the big ground point
behind the instrument cluster on a 123? Maybe a ground in the engine bay
for the amplifier?

$400 is a lot of clams to troubleshoot by replacing parts, so you may end
up trying a "new" tachometer first. Maybe take apart the female receptacle
on the fender, and rig a test circuit to your spare tachometer
so you can test it first before pulling the instrument cluster? You'll
need the wiring diagram, soldering gun and solder and solder sucker or
solder wick, and some wires and connectors to hook up the temporary
circuit. I think the tach will want a wire for power, a ground wire, and a
signal wire from the amplifier.

The stock ones _are_ electronic! IIRC, though I couldn't find my notes,
that the circuit inside the can is nearly straight out of the Application

I was also thinking that Andrew might want to take the female
plug apart and tighten the little receivers a bit to promote
better contact. I did that with mine and it has worked fine even
without Deoxit.

Also, yes, spray both the male and female sections, then plug, in-plug them
several times.

Mine is different, the cap is replaced by one with a long, slender metal tube
that has a tiny cap on top:

The one pictured in your ad will work just as well. However, I would not use
the attached brush directly on dirty contacts, as it will introduce
contaminants into the bottle. The compound appears to be the same as what I
use. I see an ad above this listing for $15.25 as opposed to the $21.09 in this
ad. That seems reasonable enough.

Re: [MBZ] Deoxit question

2016-10-15 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
BTDT numerous times, and in each case the tach worked maybe for half a day
at most before quitting again. An annoying little voice inside me keeps on
telling me it's the instrument cluster gauge but I really don't want to go
there. For $15 I will throw the dice and try the deoxit.

I'm thinking it's either the gauge in the instrument cluster or slightly
corroded pins in the sending unit. Easiest option would be to apply
Deoxit
which I don't currently own.

Question: Which type of DeOxit should I purchase that suits this
application? Is it OK to spray into the femaie housing or just onto the
male pin assembly? There are several types on ebay:

Also, yes, spray both the male and female sections, then plug, in-plug them
several times.
