Re: [MBZ] OT: Grilling in cold weather

2018-02-02 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I've had problems with getting a propane torch on a 1pound bottle to run
in cold weather. The household tanks, 500 gal, 1000 gal or whatever
seem to always work. Lots more surface area in a horizontal tank.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

I’ve seen problems with 250 gallon tanks at 0F, usually because they
were full and there wasn’t enough wetting surface. This is especially
critical with motor fuel applications as it’s all about volume, not
pressure.

you should be good for the grille cylinder until it gets Randy cold.  The
problem occurs when the tank is full, so the wetting area (the boundary between
liquid propane and gaseous propane) is smaller, so it can’t boil off fast
enough to produce enough volume of gas to keep the grille going.

In other words, in really cold weather, you’re better off with a half full tank
than a full one.  Wet towels soaked in warm water and laid on top of the tank
can help.

Propane vaporizes at around -40F, so you should be good for the grille cylinder
until it gets Randy cold. The problem occurs when the tank is full, so the
wetting area (the boundary between liquid propane and gaseous propane) is
smaller, so it can’t boil off fast enough to produce enough volume of gas to
keep the grille going.

In other words, in really cold weather, you’re better off with a half full tank

Re: [MBZ] OT: Grilling in cold weather

2018-02-02 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
HA!We're going out tomorrow to run the Pisten Bully over the ice thats gotten
on the trail in order to, hopefully, smash it up so we might be able to groom
next week if it snows a bunch more. When we had out January thaw they had to
close Birch Hill dam which got up to 19' of water and flooded much of the park
we groom. All the low lying trails have 4-6" of ice settled on them. We can't
just groom over top because the pressure ridges will break through and be
dangerous. The Pisten Bully weighs some ungodly amount (20,000# or something)
and has big metal cleats so hopefully it'll grind up the big chunks of ice
enough that they aren't a problem.I don't dare take the ASV out, its got all
rubber tracks and it'll get stuck. Theres also one section where I'm pretty
sure it'll end up sliding sideways into the river which is a truely frightening
prospect.

Traditionally if I host my own birthday party it'll snow a bunch. Next week I'm
hosting my own birthday party and indeed snow is predicted which would normally
spoil the party but I've out foxed old man winter because I'm going to be in
California.
I shudder to think what horror is going to befall Southern California next week.

The weather is much warmer where you are than it is here in Winnipeg.
I would think nothing of grilling a steak here so you should be able to
do it there.
If your BBQ is propane, it will take longer to heat up and may not get
as hot. You might want to warm up the propane tank ahead of time.
if you are a purist, using charcoal, it should make no difference if it
is cold out.
