My fault.
My script blocker was messing up the search function so it was returning
left rear lwb glass.

Claims to have it for $75, but a lot of these guys will list a piece
of glass so it searches as LH and put RH in the description, or list
it as SWB and put SEL in the description, so I'd talk to them and make
sure they've got what you want.

I'll look the junkyards and see if I can find one. I can look nearby where

At the moment I don't know of any swb w140's but I'll look again as I

Check the wiring harness connection at the alternator to make sure all the
connections are clean and tight.

On my '87 wagon, I was plagued with low voltage and occasional no-charge,
with a very very weak alternator light on that could be seen only at
night. Tracked it down to the wiring harness connector on the back of the
alternator, which had the female sides of push-on spade type connectors.
Had to carefully get those spade connectors out of the holder, pinch them
down so they gripped better, and then all was well.

My '95 E300 has screw-down connections, not sure what your car has.

That car won’t warm up significantly just sitting at idle in low ambients. It
will be warmer than a cold start, of course, but he probably won’t have cabin
heat until he starts driving for a couple of miles.

I vote for the block heater. Far more efficient and doesn’t waste fuel. Have
him throw an extension cord in the trunk for plugging in at work. And what’s
with that, after all? It’s flippin’ North Dakota! Doesn’t every place have a
receptacle for block heaters? Seems like they did when I was there some years
ago.

Coldest place I’ve ever been in a car was Wausau, WI in January. Was driving a
Ford Escort wagon with vinyl seat material. Went outside one morning to start
the car to warm it up, and the interior of the car was so cold (I think the
ambient temp was around -20F) that the seat didn’t compress when I sat on it.

I've pretty much decided I kind of loathe this feature. Way too many
people using it and stinking up the place. So it's a little cold. Suck it

this.)

I get great morning mileage out of a block heater and a little space heater
inside the cabin. Never scrape a window again!

On a gasser it should be basically no big deal. Chase the wires from
the switch, you'll need "on" and "start" and "ground".
Start shouldn't be hot unless on and the neutral safety switch both
are but it'd be worth testing that before you really trust it.

KBB is over the top as is NADA, which is pretty typical.

Edmunds is more realistic, with a private party being around $2k and retail
around $3500. That’s about the market around here.

you can leverage against that.

Re: [MBZ] W140 winder woes

2016-02-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Rear windows and front windows are completely different in their operation, I
believe. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I haven't had to deal with
windows in a W140 sedan, other than the rear.

Fronts, I believe, are the typical "scissors" type of regulator. Rear windows
use a cable and pulley setup that seems prone to fail by design.

If the rear window(s) is/are acting up, he's best off to leave them alone. The
most common failure I have seen usually involves the cable coming off the guide
roller at the bottom or the roller itself breaking into pieces and the cable
gets caught in the mechanism.

Tell him to keep the windows up until summer.

Based on the limited information, I don't think you have electrical issues, I
think you have mechanical issues with the windows themselves.

2016-02-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
Car is a 1992 300SE. Salvage title purchased from a PnP with shot
transmission. Put transmission into it, CEL is on due to under hood wire
insulation.
Vacuum pump under the rear seat is non functional, so no auto lock. Sunroof
does open and close, but is balky. Rear back up sticks are not working. I am
not aware of any things living in the rear, other than the battery and the
amp/antenna. Interior is stock. Seats work, Becker works, AC blows cold, heat
is not a furnace, but good enough. I think he has 220k on it. Transmission
went in at 203k.

I am aware that the window glass is overly heavy and can lead to failure of the
window motors or bending of the regulator. Other interior wiring has been
shown to be in good condition. A Marshall Booth fuse ectomy was done. Only
screwy thing is the wiper (I think #17) will function erratically.

Re: [MBZ] W140 winder woes

2016-02-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
Last I dealt with the car was in June. At that time the driver window was not
moving consistently when the switch was used. Pulled the door card and I
forget what we did for the solution. May have come off the rail.

Rear windows do not go up and down regularly now. There seems to be noise when
the switch is applied. Kid is not disclosing much other than he does not want
to try the window in case it gets stuck open in -40 weather.

In the W140, window operation is controlled by the convenience
module, which,,if memory serves me correctly, is located in the
trunk on the right side. Failures of the convenience module affect
all windows, so if the problems are related to one or two and not
all, it's unlikely to be the problem.

Dan

That makes some of us long for the days when fixing a window was
replacing a plastic slide, a regulator made of steel, or a handle.

Your posts are a stream of consciousness rather that a clearly defined list of
issues.

Can you give us specifics? Model year would help, too, as the interior systems
went through a number of running production/design changes.

Despite having the biodegradable harness, failures in the interior portions of
the wiring are really rare. It typically fails where it's exposed to heat, such
as the engine compartment. I have never seen an interior harness fail on one
of these.

In the W140, window operation is controlled by the convenience module,
which,,if memory serves me correctly, is located in the trunk on the right
side. Failures of the convenience module affect all windows, so if the
problems are related to one or two and not all, it's unlikely to be the problem.

Re: [MBZ] W140 winder woes

2016-02-28 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

This is all general MB experience, nothing particular to a 140POS.

The rear windows have a kidproof lockout. perhaps all that needs to
be done is to slide that switch the other direction.

LF and RR should be on one circuit, and RF and LR on the other.

I've had the plastic slider fail, letting the window fall (not on a 140)

About 1985, the regulators got cheap, going form a cast aluminum gear
to a stamped 1/8" steel gear. The steel gear strips. That is
usually manifest first by a clicking sound when the window is up all
the way.

You could have a bad slider, a bad regulator or a bad motor or even bad wiring.

the motors, even on say a 126 come in many shapes and sizes, so
probably not easily interchangeable. Best bet is to acquire the
whole regulator/motor assembly from the knackers and change it, IF
that is the problem.

Boy thinks the glass has fallen off the arm. Driver window had
failed last year and we screwed around with it. It might have a
wiring issue. Rear windows are the ones not going up or down.
Weather around there is -40 much of the time, so he has not opened
it up to really know.

I pulled the regulators from the W115 and found that the motors
would fail out, but the gearing part was still good. Except one.
Electric motors were pretty standard, so could swap around. I
assume the motors for other models could work. If I can snag them
from PnP, that would be useful, but would need to know what model
had compatible motors.

Since I am 900 miles away from the car, I was wondering mean time
between failure for systems was. The likelihood of motor,
regulator, or other part being prime cause so the parts are on deck
so he does not need to drive around waiting for the parts or to
solve the problem.

Car has the original biodegradable harness. CEL has been
illuminated since he got the car, but it clears long enough to pass
emissions. There are a few spots were the insulation is gone, and
the thing needs replaced. I was wondering what replacement harness
costs. If it is reasonable, I would just get him one for his
birthday. He has enough idiots he lives with who can help him
install

Well I have owned 140s for decades before poos did but have forgotten more
about them that poos knows. But anyway what are the problems exactly with the
windows?

Re: [MBZ] W140 ACC Mystery

2016-01-22 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
I assume that on cool the condenser in front of the radiator is running hot as
are the high pressure lines under the hood.
When you leave it on cool, does the compressor cycle off and on more rapidly
than usual (which might indicate blocked airflow through the evaporator.)?
A guess would be that, since both heat and cold are inoperative, there is a
problem, either electrical or mechanical, with the doors that allow airflow to
the evaporator and heater coil.
If you can get the borescope up under the dash some way, you might be able to
see what's going on.

Can you get to the heater core and/or A/C evaporator? Is one hot and the
other cold?

Could you use a hot wire anemometer to see if there is air flowing
through each?

Not easily, but by holding the lines entering and exiting the system, they’re
hot and cold as expected.

Diagnostic trouble code. The ACC panel has a full set of diagnostics and will
record and display codes to identify faults in the system. I haven’t run the
diagnostics for the various temperature sensors, bt I don’t think they’ll tell

Re: [MBZ] W140 rear door panel removal

2015-10-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A lot of people forego the rivets and use screws or nuts and bolts, so I hear.
It's fairly easy to do, but removing and replacing the rivets is a simple task
when necessary.

Mercedes must have gotten into the habit of doing this, as there are rivets
holding bits of the doors together in my W220 as well. When I recently replaced
the closing assist actuator in my driver's door I had to drill out and replace
a couple of rivets that held a window channel support.

Good luck replacing the rivets. If you use rivets, you better have a BIG rivet

ARGH!

There are two screws behind the wood trim panel, the top one isn't
very visible.

It will NOT come apart if it's screwed to the door.

It will if you yank hard enough!

Did you remove ALL of the screws behind the wood trim?

Good luck replacing the rivets. If you use rivets, you better have
a BIG rivet tool, as they are near impossible to get the shanks to
break off with a little hand pop rivet too. I bought a big honking
one fro under $20 at HF and it deals with the larger rivets like
buttah.

Different chassis type, but I used solid steel rivets, and "riveted"
them with the air chisel with a blunt chisel that was originally
round and sharp. It is still holding. I didn't have enough hands to
hold everything in place and then rivet with a hammer and a heavy
backstop. the air chisel blunted them enough to stay in.

Turn key to the left and pull up really hard on the trunk lid. Try it with the
key turned let and the key/cylinder pushed in, too.

Subject: [MBZ] W140 trunk lock stuck

1997 S420

So, this morning I pushed in the plunger to open the trunk with the car
locked.

Nothing happened because the trunk was locked.

Then I hit the button on the key fob, the green light flashed, I hit the
plunger

again, possibly while
the lock mechanism was in motion. The trunk didn't open.

I locked and unlocked the trunk with the key.
Still won't open.

I locked and unlocked the car with the fob.
Trunk still won't open.

How do I reset the trunk latch so I can open the trunk?

Mitch.

No joy.
Then I got in the car to drive home, saw the switch on the dash, hit it and the
trunk lid rose.
Got out, shut it, and it opened by pushing the cylinder in.

Possible lingering problem: I thought the lock cylinder was flush with the
surrounding plastic.
Now it's recessed about 1/4

Duh! Forgot about suggesting the dash switch.

Yeah, that ain’t right. It should be flush.

Something’s up with the cylinder or latch.
