Actually I found some twizzlers bites (or nips?) that had licorice
extract listed on the ingredients. Most candies do seem to be using anise
instead...

I've also found good licorice out in garrett county, MD and of course in
lancaster, PA :)

Oh yeah, driving a SD in the rain is quite fun :) I kinda miss it, but a
w210 will kinda grow on you :) they are much more spry in city traffic..
the SD seems more relaxed and ponderous by comparison.

Licorice for the anise, somehow appropriate for the topic.

I'm 55 and my Dad had problems with his colon and other stuff - he never
would talk about it and my mom would tell what she knew which was not much.
In any case, my Urologist says I should have a colonscopathy every other
year. I kept putting it off and in Dec my right leg started swelling - my
regular doc had a doppler done and it said no blood clot (for which I am
truely thankful - had one 7 years ago and it was no fun) - he sent me to a
vascular doc - who said *his* doppler was better and he would do a CT scan
also - the doppler was negative again and the CT scan showed a enlargement
on my colon - he put me on Cipro and said I shoud have a colonscopathy as
soon as he could schedule it. Like the others, I took the GoLyghtly (Ha!)
and had the exam - don't remember *any* of it after being wheeled into the
room - woke up and went home. Again, as others have said, the night before
was the worst part of it - when I have it done again, I'll insist on the
pills instead of the liquid. So, I *finally* had it done - the good news,
the enlargement he found was not cancerous and the polyp he found and
removed was not cancerous, for which I am truely thankful.

Not looking forward to the next one though. Also, my Dad had prostate
cancer (which eventually killed him) and so I get to have a yearly exam
(yippp!) and so far they have all been without incident.

Probably the 2 most unpleasant tests a man can go thru and yet it's
something those of us over 50 or so need to have done on a regular basis.
Thankfully, if they ever *do* find something it's usually very curable if
caught early.

Now you know much more about me than you *ever* wanted to know!

black licorice also does weird things with drugs. I'm not making this up -
the chemicals in black licorice affect the metabolism of other drugs. Just
blanking on how ...

In another example, if you're on statins for high cholesterol, don't drink
grapefruit juice because parts of the juice inhibit metabolism of the drug.
For the geeks, it's a cytochrome P450 interaction.

Diesel relevance - a med school classmate of mine was lubing her door hinges
with WD-40 (her request) and smacked my 300D's trunk lid with her POS Ford
Contour.

I liked the drugs. Best not to recall either procedure, since work was
done. I recall work being done because it hurt like a *[EMAIL PROTECTED]@!.
That is what ruined my day! Going home later and being spaced was
better than that big hurt out of nowhere. Spent the day having
flashbacks and thinking DAMN! that hurt.

Now that we are clean, I guess I could do it um, every few years.

I had my first one of these last fall. While it was not truly
unpleasant, I
can't say I'd want to make it an annual event. I am 54 now and my
father had
colon cancer so it was deemed a good idea to check me out at this age.
I did
not exhibit any problems and my understanding is that my doctor does
not

believe I need another of these for at least 5 years.

I declined the sedative and watched the whole (no pun intended) thing
on the

color monitor. Actually very interesting. Also, if one declines the
sedative, then one can drive one's self to and from the test. The
sedative
may make it easier if one is truly nervous but the nurse said it sort
of

ruins the rest of one's day.

I had an angiogram in October 2004 and on that occasion they
recommended the

sedative. I let them give it to me and unfortunately, I remember almost
nothing of the procedure. Once again I was told that I could watch on
the

big monitor but I can't recall trying to. All I remember is the doctor
telling me that everything was fine and I would not need bypass
surgery.

An asymptomatic person with no family history of colorectal disease
should

have a colonoscopy done once a year after 50 (rule of thumb) unless
overridden by your doctor. If you have family history or medical
conditions

that encourage colon cancer, you should have colonoscopies done even
earlier. There are some genetic conditions that force people to have
colonoscopies in their teens, and total colon removal by their 20s.
Be glad

you don't have those.

If I recall correctly, *natural licorice* candy is slightly estrogenic, and
also has a slight sedative effect. Most ot the black licorice candy folks

Re: [MBZ] WAS What is the most addictive NOW colorectal etc

So, my question is, how many of you folks have had one of these? For those
that have, how would you feel about having one annually?

I had my first one of these last fall. While it was not truly unpleasant, I
can't say I'd want to make it an annual event. I am 54 now and my father had
colon cancer so it was deemed a good idea to check me out at this age. I did
not exhibit any problems and my understanding is that my doctor does not
believe I need another of these for at least 5 years.

I declined the sedative and watched the whole (no pun intended) thing on the
color monitor. Actually very interesting. Also, if one declines the
sedative, then one can drive one's self to and from the test. The sedative
may make it easier if one is truly nervous but the nurse said it sort of
ruins the rest of one's day.

I had an angiogram in October 2004 and on that occasion they recommended the
sedative. I let them give it to me and unfortunately, I remember almost
nothing of the procedure. Once again I was told that I could watch on the
big monitor but I can't recall trying to. All I remember is the doctor
telling me that everything was fine and I would not need bypass surgery.

An asymptomatic person with no family history of colorectal disease should
have a colonoscopy done once a year after 50 (rule of thumb) unless
overridden by your doctor. If you have family history or medical conditions
that encourage colon cancer, you should have colonoscopies done even
earlier. There are some genetic conditions that force people to have
colonoscopies in their teens, and total colon removal by their 20s. Be glad
you don't have those.

I've had one, and it was pretty much a non-event. The procedure takes about
15 minutes, they give you a sedative as a rule and I don't remember a
thing. The prep was interesting, you need to hang around the house for that
one, and the really good thing about getting a colonoscopy done is that they
can clip off little future problem spots, affording you the likely ability
to avoid colon cancer and the potentially major surgery that entails. I was
also told the 5 year interval.

So you see, it's kind of like car care, you can do preventative maintenance,
or you can do major repairs (that may or may not work) later. I like to
avoid problems, don't you? It's always easier and cheaper to avoid trouble
than to get out of it later..

Had a combination colonoscopy and endoscopy done at the same time last year
- with a handshake in the middle perhaps? Done in a section of a clinic
that did only that, and the people were great. Had a twilight anesthesia
and remember extending my neck a bit and waking up when it was done. No
problems from either end, 5 year return suggested if no problems. I
wouldn't mind having an annual event IF there were a good reason for it. No
one has recommended it.
I was more concerned about the endoscopy than the colonoscopy, but not a
problem, and not painful such as some of the contrast procedures have been.
