[MOPO] BLADERUNNER FAKES

2007-11-07 Thread Flixspix
Probably my first collision with a fake poster is from one of my all time
favorite films BLADERUNNER. It was being linenbacked by a well known studio
and I mentioned it didn't look authentic. With that I remembered I had one
in my car being shipped out. I went out, undid the packaging and put my
original against what I strongly felt was a bogus copy.

Boy I'll say.Everything from details in the credit block to the smoke
from the lit cigarette clearly indicated bogus.Linen backer wasn't
perpetrating a fraud, just linen backing for a client, but he did say he
wouldn't
want to mention this finding to this particular client.

I just acquired one folded and three rolled BLADERUNNER onesheets from a
very respected dealer that I was thrilled to add to my inventory. I wasn't
present, but at the last Court's show one of these were used to confront a
seller present who was selling fakes. Denials and words were exchanged but do
not
know much more at what went down.

My intention is to bring these out to coincide with the 5 disc ultimate DVD
BLADERUNNER collection (what! you haven't pre-ordered?) first week in
December. What kills me is I really need to get about $300 for each, but
the
confusion and doubt surrounding these onesheets have kept the numbers
depressed. Possibly Ebay will not be the proper venue but one-on-one sales to
existing clients whose confidence I have earned.

On a completely unrelated topic, RATATOUILLE just came out on DVD. This
is one of the most gloriously beautiful PIXAR animated films and you owe it to
yourself to rent or purchase if its theatrical run passed you by. I
promise, you will be absolutely blown away. Save for 3:10 TO YUMA its my
favorite
film of the year so far.

[MOPO] OT Congrats Morrie Everett

2007-10-10 Thread Flixspix

Whoa,

Received an impressive mailer from Morrie Everett's 5th Annual Hollywood
Poster Auction and what an impressive tease of items for sale. An INVISIBLE
MAN insert, a DRACULA window card, DeMille's first 10 COMMANDMENTS
onesheet, halfsheet of BABE COMES HOME along with many other impressive
pieces
including one of my all-time favorite pieces of in theatre movie paper, the
insert for TARZAN THE APE MAN. This is the one with an illustrated Weissmuller
swinging on a vine with Jane clutching onto him for dear life and the
shadow cast against the dark greens of the jungle is that of an ape; such
imaginative art.

I think there are pieces in auction that will make their mark on the record
books if in fact one is being maintained.?

Congratulations Morrie on an impressive line-up so far.

[MOPO] Hitchcock Suggestion Of Formats

2007-09-28 Thread Flixspix
Helmut,

I could not agree with you more regarding the appeal of the REAR WINDOW
window card. In fact I have up on Ebay a lot of 4 vintage window cards,
REAR
WINDOW, TO CATCH A THIEF, DIAL M FOR MURDER and PSYCHO

In a separate auction I have the NORTH BY NORTHWEST reissue from '66 in
stone mint condition.

I think I have both lots priced reasonably and the condition of the pieces
are great never mind all that hard searching has been done for you.

[MOPO] RE I WAS 50% OF BRUCE'S EMAIL

2007-09-20 Thread Flixspix
MOPOER'S

This email comes straight up and truly sincere a heads up given its coming
from me.BUT I too slipped off the Bruce List whoa 6 years ago I
think...and it was remarkable how fast prideful locking of horns segued
into so many missed opportunities personally but way more importantly for my
business. Oh sure I might would call someone and bother them to place a bid
for me on something I considered essential but without the benefit of that
feel one gets with certain sellers the results were feeble and worse I felt
like I did skipping Chapel at my High School...great for the moment to
watch moon landings or listening in the car to eight tracks of THE DOOBIE
BROTHERS but alas my soul was empty. That may be overplaying it a bit

but you get the drift.

So months and months ago I wrote a letter to Bruce after having watched a
1920's 3 sheet that had my name all over it just go poof and into the hands
of someone I am sure undeserving and worse at a way reasonable price.

I said to myself [EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]())$*@[EMAIL PROTECTED]
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]())$*@@$) get
your [EMAIL PROTECTED]^%$$$_ (mailto:@^$$*^$$$)and write Bruce. Tired
of
feeling I was on Woody Allen's bus in STARDUST MEMORIES nose pressed to the
glass,
my Yazoo Mills tubes barren...while the party bus sang and danced their
way to poster nirvana. SO I wrote him what I thought was a very nice note,
spell checked, the whole nine yards.

Seven months later I got a great note back, a brief up to date on dos and
donts and immediately was put on the mailing list (6 years and still 28
catalogs going out the door my god are they're breeding)So first I
thought
let me just watch the first couple of auctions...you know like watching
the other team get dressed in the lockerseh that may not be quite
the sports analogy I am looking for but anyway took a dive head first after
j
watching the ins and outs for two weeks. That was six weeks ago so five
weeks ago I placed bids and got sniped on every goddamn onebut IT WAS
OKAY...a little rusty, a little to wimpy on the Sabrina poster okay okay,
So
one more week seeing what's inflated, what sneaks by what's still hot,
what cooled (Jeeze what happened to 50's Bogart wrap'em up with fish
already
So now I'm pumped, I'm ready now everybody get the hell out of my way

AND HOT DAMN AM I GLAD I DID AND THE NEXT WEEK AFTER EVEN
BETTER...NO SLAM DUNK YES YES YES YESshit I forgot how much
fun it could be
 too.

So take it from your buddy FREEMAN on Mopo...flixspix for those that
spend (thank you) if you found your self cross wise with the man in that
oasis known as WEST PLAINS or is it by now HERSHENSON FLATS ...a few
words sincerely spoken just might make all the difference for you too.

It already has for me so Bruce thanks.glad to be one of the gang
again.

[MOPO] DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

2007-08-27 Thread Flixspix
Well casting is progressing for the remake of one of the grand-daddies of
all science fiction films:

Keanu Reeves has signed for the role of Klaatu in the remake of DAY THE
EARTH STOOD STILL

well, he certainly has a lock on alien presence in Hollywood but I
see Ralph Fiennes as a more appropriate choice ...but why a remake seems
to be the overriding question here.

I am to understand its special order only from the manufacturer and you have
to purchase an entire panel which are those long sheets you see strapped to
the sides of A-frames on truck beds. It will run around $2500

Sue Heim while she doesn't frame 6 sheets might could give more accurate
firgures since she is a heavy purchaser of smaller sizes

[MOPO] FS 21 RARE MINI-WINDOW CARDS

2007-06-20 Thread Flixspix
My Friends,

I have listed on Ebay, 21 truly rare mini-window cards from the 1930's
ending in about 36 hours. As most of you know these are highly prized studio
printed promotional materials produced for only a short time for theatres.
I have linked HOTEL FOR WOMEN below. Clicking or swiping and pasting the
URL will then allow you to click seller's other auctions to view them all.

Other titles include MANNEQUIN, THE GREAT WALTZ, CONQUEST, DRUMS ALONG THE
MOHAWK, YOUNG MR. LINCOLN, THOROUGHBREDS DON'T CRY, LOVE IS NEWS and
other great titles representing stars as varied as Tyrone Power, Joan
Crawford,
Will Rogers, Linda Darnell, Henry Fonda, Loretta Young and William Powell
and directors like John Ford, Victor Fleming, Henry King, and Frank Borzage
all distinguished film makers and the titles here are some of their best.

Many are in mint condition and others have minor restorations carefully
spelled out in great detail.I think this is an opportunity at least worth
a
quick look and for that I thank you in advance.

[MOPO] Are We Not Where We Were On The Issue Of Whitey-white Inserts 6 months Ago

2007-06-18 Thread Flixspix
MOPOSTIES!!
Bruce's polls are illuminating and quite surprising on occasion but
always entertaining. This week he enjoyed his own IS TONY DEAD moment on the
issue of WHITEY-WHITES in our poster pond.however these kudzu
insertsdid anyone's opinion change in any measurable degree from 6
months
ago?...a year ago?...three?

And what do we do with this avalanche of opinion all wrapped in righteous
indignation... Are we empowered to do anything with this torch of truth
burning oh so brightly? Witch hunting seems crude and mean-spirited just in
one salvo that I thought originally was Dario having fun...I didn't even
look at David's insert he knows his paper I thought it was a funny
Canadian hahaha lobbed across the border to tweak with a wink. like
Anne
Murray, or hyper-hyped auctions entitled Important Canadian Art Truly
Whitey-Whites is Mopo's equivalent to Universal Health Care or Immigration
Reform. It gets bumped around, prodded, poked and irrigated and then stalls

under its own weight of personal experiences resulting in nothing that could be

called reform. And is this meant as a call to arms?

If we see listed do we file complaints in mass to Ebay? Do we strike the
sellers from our tony soirees? Do we place bids pay then return them boys on
odd numbered months, girls even numbered? And aren't we talking about
what, nine titles? Nine against 111,000.00 other possible's?

Okay I am feeling tres KOSOMOTO this morning.CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME
THE ABSOLUTE DEFINITIVE SKINNY ON THE FULL SET OF 8 LOBBY CARDS FROM A
FISTFUL OF DOLLARS?...AND WHY IS OUR BELOVED M.E. DRAWN INVARIABLY INTO
THE
DISCUSSION (in hushed voice usually copped by Republicans when discussing
actual tax burdens presently or TCM members only now fully realizing their
queen,
Kate, was actually a mean old dyke with long time beard Spencer and
before him beard with eye patch John Ford, swam with the dolphins and never
once
smelled of fish) AND. IF TRUE ...WHY IT HAS NEVER
COME UP IN THE 41 DISCUSSIONS ABOUT INSERTS SINCE OCTOBER OF 2000 OR IS THAT
A 500 POUND OOPS IN THE ROOM?

And is Matt Shapiro still dead?

[MOPO] Off Topic SOPRANOS The Finale Sublime

2007-06-10 Thread Flixspix
Okay I don't know how many Mopo'ers were regular viewers of
Sopranos...but I truly spent my Sundays at 6:00 or 9:00 (East Coast
transmission or
West Coast airing many time both) since its first HBO airing. When between
seasons I turned into a relentless channel switcher looking for movies or some
programming approaching SOPRANO'S quality and unless it was a true classic
on TCM it proved a futile exercise.

The stunning series ended tonight in brilliant fashion, building suspense
oh so slowly while attending to loose story lines. Then Tony having a rare
dinner just with the wife and his adult kids at a favorite diner, while
familiar hit men quietly enter and then.literally.

Those dots will leave you spellbound.

As for inserts if doubtful don't buy. That simple. Pass it on.

[MOPO] Off Topic Sopanos Spoiler Warning

2007-06-10 Thread Flixspix
Do not continue if you haven't seen the finale.

David regarding whack or no whackthe main point I was making was
Chase left it shockingly ambiguous. That was what was spellbinding to me. I
think personally it was a race to the finish for Tony's life, either dead
or alive but dead in hands of Feds.First thought, not enough muscle for
an FBI interceptand the individual going to the restroom called up
Pacino going to the head and coming out with more than just his dick in his
hand. But beautifully up to us to debate.

But leave it to Chase to create suspense to near unbearable heights
brilliantly just by Meadow's inability to parallel park wonderful,

As for AJ his character's maddening naivety , unrealistic, self-absorbed,
purpose driven life was given I think the needed extra time so to be
served up by Chase and skewered a searing indictment on the current lack of
integrity, passion and dedication of today's youth for a better future. This
by
witnessing AJ's complete surrender of any of his declarations to address
dependency on oil, rights violations of Muslims, Nuclear proliferation, and
his supposed epiphany of material wealth and conspicuous consumption with his
SUV burned up all rendered moot when given an entry level film deal and a new
car albeit with somewhat better mileage and poof there went global
pro-activity.

And it allowed once again the delusions of Tony and Carmela the idea of
success...that AJ is working for an active film production
company.exactly one step up above porn now venturing into cheapie torture
horror films.
Carmela's classic yes make those phone calls and get valuable contacts.

[MOPO] YOU CALL THAT A BLOCKBUSTER?

2007-05-28 Thread Flixspix
THE NEW YORK TIMES has a great chart assessing the real blockbusters of
movie attendance, with figures in MILLIONS adjusted for inflation.

1. GONE WITH THE WIND $1,329
2. STAR WARS $1,172
3. SOUND OF MUSIC $937
4. ET THE XTRA TERR $933
5. 10 COMMANDMENTS $862
6. TITANIC $845
7. JAWS $843
8. DR. ZHIVAGO$817
9. THE EXORCIST $728
10. SNOW 7 DWARFS $717
11. SHREK 2 $468
12.SPIDER MAN $457
13.SPIDER MAN 2 $396
14.PIRATES CARIBBEAN$333
15.SHREK $311

One interesting note is TITANIC, as high as it appears on the list, never
had a re-release. All the ones preceding had several which in the case of
Star
Wars added a 100 million to its gross.

[MOPO] RE REISSUES

2007-05-23 Thread Flixspix

MOPO'ERS

The reissue for THE HUSTLER runs twice to three times the original

SUSPICION the paper from this re-release has tripled in price from just
two years ago. Infinitely better art work Heritage Auctions has really
ushered in the irrefutable success on this paper

One Eyed Jacks...on a much smaller lever the original onesheet is in
dull sepia and the re-release with exact same art is in color. So instead of
a $50 poster its a $100 poster.

Casablanca now I am referencing Italian paper here but the 1960's paper
still can choke most people's budgets with photobustas commanding over a
1000 and the two or four foglios commanding over 5 grand which considering
how recent is mind boggling but admittedly beautiful paper.

The Wizard of Oz re-issue was an interesting campaign by MGM capitalizing
on Garland's popularity as an adult singer and entertainer just a decade or
so later. Inserting her image at the time of the re-issue was to attract
those new fans of hers to see her in an older film. Remember, WIZARD OF OZ

in its original release was a disappointment at the boxoffice. In fact it
did not recoup its investment until its broadcast on television

look closely, its obvious that Ken ended his listing and then re-listed

[MOPO] OFF TOPIC AND UTTERLY FASCINATING PICASSO, BRAQUE AND THE MOVIES

2007-04-15 Thread Flixspix
Art
When Picasso and Braque Went to the Movies

*   _RANDY  KENNEDY_

Published: April 15, 2007

IT was _Picasso_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/p/pablo_picasso/index.html?inline=nyt-per)
  doing the noninterview interview,
decades before Warhol came along to elevate it to an art form. In 1911 a
writer for Paris-Journal was asking Picasso about the radically new kind of
painting people were calling Cubism, the lightning bolt that had shot forth
from
his studio and that of his friend Georges Braque. Picasso claimed never to
have heard of such a thing. “Il n’y a pas de Cubisme,” he said blithely, and
then excused himself to go feed his pet monkey.

In part because its creators said so little about it during their lifetime,
guarding it like a kind of state secret, Cubism has generated a library’s
worth of scholarship, probably more than any other artistic innovation in the
last century. The general picture that has emerged is one of Cubism bubbling
up
out of a thick Parisian stew of symbolist poetry, Cézanne, cafe society,
African masks, absinthe and a fascination with all things mechanical and
modern,
mostly airplanes and automatons.

But while almost every aspect of these two artists’ live has been scrutinized
 — their friends, lovers, favorite drugs, hangouts, hat sizes and nicknames
(Picasso called Braque Wilbourg, after Wilbur Wright) — one mutual fascination
has been largely overlooked: Both men were crazy about the movies.
They were also coming of age artistically in the city of the Lumière
brothers, where the modern moviegoing experience had just been born, starting
in
cafes and cabarets and then moving into theaters, packed with people still in
disbelief as they watched a two-dimensional picture plane leap to life. “The
cinema was not simply in its earliest infancy,” wrote the critic André Salmon,
one of Picasso’s friends and fellow moviegoers. “It was wailing.”
For more than 20 years the New York art dealer Arne Glimcher had carried
around a theory, more gut feeling than scholarly conjecture, that Picasso and
Braque had been seduced by that siren song of the early cinema, and that
Cubism,
with its fractured surfaces and multiple perspectives, owed much more to the
 movies than anyone had noticed.
Five years ago Mr. Glimcher finally decided to do something about his hunch.
He enlisted Bernice Rose, a longtime curator at the Museum of Modern Art and
now director of Mr. Glimcher’s gallery, PaceWildenstein, to undertake the
daunting academic work of trying to find traces of the silver screen hiding
among the endless histories, archives, criticism and art of the early Cubist
years. The result of that work, which opens Friday at the gallery’s East 57th
Street location, is “Picasso, Braque and Early Film in Cubism,” an exhibition
that Mr. Glimcher calls one of the most ambitious in the gallery’s 47-year
history.
The gallery has gathered more than 40 paintings, collages and other works —
none for sale, Mr. Glimcher said — from private collections and from museums
around the world, including the Georges Pompidou Center, the Museum of Modern
Art, the _Art Institute of Chicago_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/a/art_institute_of_chicago/index.html?inline=nyt-org)
and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. (To get one Picasso he wanted from a
museum in Prague, Mr. Glimcher even parted temporarily with a 1951 _Jackson
Pollock_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/p/jackson_pollock/index.html?inline=nyt-per)
he owns, swapping the paintings for the
length of the show.)
Besides paintings, the exhibition has rounded up rare examples of early
cinema’s deus ex machina, the cinematograph: a whirring hand-cranked camera and

projector of the kind that Picasso and Braque would have seen, not yet
ensconced in a booth but out among the seats, acting as a powerful mechanized
metaphor for the artist, absorbing the world through its eye and beaming it
back out
again. A part of the exhibition space will also be transformed into a
simulacrum of an old Belle Époque movie house, where dozens of short movies
from
the medium’s first years will flicker again, this time through the magic of
digital projection.
For Mr. Glimcher the show is about personal obsessions in more ways than one.
Beginning in the early 1980s — after he had a small film role in his friend
_Robert Benton_
(http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/filmography.html?p_id=212225inline=nyt-per)
’s “Still of the Night” as an auction bidder (bidding
on paintings he himself had lent for the scene) — Mr. Glimcher became, as he
said in a recent interview, “completely bitten by the movie thing.”
He began producing movies, including “Legal Eagles”

[MOPO] SLABBING SHOULD BE VIGOROUSLY REJECTED

2007-04-15 Thread Flixspix
Slabbing.

Bruce has offered up this subject so I'll bite.

Why slabbing for lobby cards? I am to understand for coins, comics and
trading cards, there existed a pervasive malaise in accurate condition
reveal.
With internet sales exploding, for comics, with multiple pages, a lot of
sins were frequently overlooked and it was impacting the industry. So if I
recall correctly, Heritage hosted a major comic auction and virtually all
the items were slabbed and results were impressive Slabbing established its
foothold.

Now the company(ies) (are their still two?) who grade and slab are a
business.and expansion of their supposed impartial grading to other paper
formats is critical for their long-term foothold into the future. So just
because they claim their is a problem are we as sellers just going to drop to
our
knees and rejoice that the Calvary is here to purge the cancer of egregious
inaccuracies in the sales of lobby cards?

For comics, fine, there existed a serious problem in accurate condition and
grading within their sales universe and most agree it saved the biz. But I
do not see anywhere that kind of skullduggery or mis-representation with the
majority of auction houses or sellers present regarding movie material. So
why jack up one's cost of goods with the additional fees for grading and
slabbing,
never mind additional insured postage.

So if any auction house tries to instigateI cannot shout loud enough
to not bid.tell your clients to not bid as well. If the prices
don't deliver watch how fast they drop that idea. Our business is not broke,

occasionally a tweek here or there is necessary but otherwise I think most
people are happy with how sales are conducted. If they are not they will go
to
another that delivers to their expectations. Accepting the concept of
slabbing is akin to saying were too indifferent and stupid to police our
industry ...we need third party intervention...take our hard earned
monies
we're lobby card lemmings without conscience or backbone.

And besides, I like how I frame my lobby cards and window cards and that
doesn't include a a half inch thick rectangular slab with bar scans stuck in
plain view more appropriate for display on retail racks for expensive Monster
Cables not treasured lobby cards.

SLABBING= Irrelevant, unnecessary, an imposition, costly and demeaning.

[MOPO] POSTERS MOM WOULD NEVER ALLOW UP

2007-04-03 Thread Flixspix
Hey Guys,

I just wanted to point out about 10 auctions I have running the collection
I call POSTERS MOM WOULD NEVER ALLOW UP.

Below is the link for the first one, literary allusions to Melville aside,
entitled:

THAR SHE BLOWS

Then click seller's other auctions to view the rest. WARNING these posters
are misogynist, vulgar, appeal to the lowest common denominator, and void of
any Republican/Family Value ethics so I know most of you will love them.
Great prices and overall the bunch in VF+ or better condition. For Pam Grier
fans, she is very well represented and of course there is a collection of
Bardot, Mansfied and Novak whom all three speak to a more innocent (?) place
in
time however MOM never looked at their films quite in the same way.

[MOPO] Big Titled Horrormeisters Are Breathing A Sigh Of Relief YES?

2007-03-30 Thread Flixspix
Heritage so far has grabbed some almost obscenely high returns on their high
end horror pieces. This should put to rest those that wondered if high end
horror was becoming too incestuous. With the death of two of the most well
know collectors of the genre, it seems there still remains a healthy
audience whether actual collectors or investors who still blindly pony up the
big
bucks as if Munster Money. Then of course in between auctions these same
guys have no problem beating up independent dealers over $700 lobby cards of
equal scarcity.

Just a backslap of an observation you know I like to joke Anyway, I have to
confess the entire genre is a language that escapes me. For instance THE
RAVEN halfsheet. I had a truly eye-opening experience with Ron Moore who
had
acquired the halfsheet and from myself a truly beautiful Italian 4 foglio
for THE WOLFMAN for Johnny Ramone, literally days before his passing.
Meeting him at his hotel before he was leaving to meet with Ramone, to deliver
again in my estimation a stunning Italian 4 foglio at a reasonable price. We
talked a bit and then he said would I like to see what else is being
delivered. Sure! So Ron proudly removes the halfsheet from its sleeve and
shows
me with his usual flourish.

Now honest to God I looked at and mentally thought it was on par in appeal
and value with House On Haunted Hill maybe a bit more given the age. But hell
my 4 foglio ran circles around this rather banal halfsheet. Then he told me
the price... Up to that point, Ron seemed to me a helluva a nice guy but I
was so thoroughly convinced he was taking advantage of a very ill
client.this halfsheet in my mind so completely unremarkable that I
thought Ron
was engaging in a horrific bedside gouging and I began to feel queasy and
really creepy..it took forever to get back to WEHO from Burbank. I then
immediately called my Horror mentor Ron Magid who went all a dither that I
got to see such a rare Horror Holy Grail. Ohhh ahhh!
okaay Yeesh!!

...But to hell with my ignorance I was so relieved that Ron Moore
wasn't the Anti-christ. If you read the forward in the Hertiage Johnny Ramone
Collection you will read a glorious first person account of just how much
that halfsheet meant to Johnny Ramone. and the ulitmate disposition of the
Wolfman 4 foglio.

Well anyway another halfsheet of the Raven sold for 51,000.00 Its mostly
the image of a bookthese people are fucking nuts

[MOPO] WHY FILM NOIR IS SO DAMN SPECIAL GREAT INFORMATIVE ARTICLE

2007-03-16 Thread Flixspix
Don't know how many of you guys read SLATE but yesterday one of their
critics at large posted this article regarding film noir as an overall
observation in light of a half dozen titles just recently released on DVD.

Double Indemnity WC available if anyone is interested. by the way.

Cynics, sluts, heists, and murder most foul.
By Stanley Crouch
Posted Thursday, March 15, 2007, at 7:05 AM ET

Film noir evolved from the American crime thrillers that rose to pulp
prominence between 1920 and 1940. Hollywood took those tales and put the focus
on
cynics, fall guys, sluts, heists, and murders most foul. The huge screens in
movie theaters provided lurid masks for the resentments that pulse within
Americana. Our hatred of the upper class and of goody-two-shoes morality got
plenty of play. So did our repulsive puritanical troubles with sexual
attraction,
our reluctant but ultimate belief in the righteousness of force, and our
tendency to answer life's pervasive horrors with conspiracy theories.

Noir's popularity was inevitable. How could American audiences resist the
combative stance of an unimpressed hero whose ethos could be reduced to: Is
that so? How could they fail to be lured by all of the actresses cast as
Venus' flytraps? Everything in film noir takes place at the bottom, in the
sewers
of sensibility. It holds that the force of the world is not only indifferent
to, but obviously bigger than, the individual, which is why personal
satisfaction, whether illegal or immoral, is the solution to the obligatory
ride
through an unavoidably brittle universe.

A black and white phenomenon, film noir is thought to have achieved its
greatest heights between 1945 and 1950, though the apparent moment of final
brilliance arrived in 1958's Touch of Evil, directed with the heightened
imagination of genius by Orson Welles. As a genre, film noir appeared as an
antidote
to the Hollywood conventions of pristine character and fulfilled romance
because its creators sensed that rah rah was no longer the best prescription
for
the blues. Possessed of a shrewd aesthetic that was both meretricious and
rebellious, film noir generously utilized sex and violence, firmly rooting
itself in American culture.

A number of its most influential directors were European Jews like Fritz
Lang, Otto Preminger, and Billy Wilder, all of whom had escaped the Nazis. The
enthusiastic support of the Third Reich by the German people had convinced
such artists that conformity always had to be questioned, ridiculed, and
perhaps
resisted. Another assumption was that corruption hid behind images of a
gilded civilization, high-class refinement, uplift, and thorough social
improvement. So, in one sense, Adolf Hitler was a major player in forming the
sensibility of film noir. That Austrian boy whom Chaplin accused of having
made off
with his mustache had done it again but, as usual, not in the way the
paperhanger intended.

With the recently released two-disc DVD of 1944's Double Indemnity and the
three volumes of The Film Noir Classic Collection, one gets the essentials of
the style and all of the information necessary to recognize the school that
the French saw long before Americans did. Barbara Stanwyck, Claire Trevor,
Jane Greer, and Peggy Cummins are each but separately the brilliant stars of
Double Indemnity; Murder, My Sweet; Out of the Past; and Gun Crazy. They are
the essential film noir amalgamations of Eve, Salome, and Carmen: there to
bring men down through the pulsating syncopations of their glistening
orifices.
After but one night with any of them, men were not only willing to bay at the
moon of homicide but snap at it with a determination that pushes a full
circle of murder into the air.

Double Indemnity is the first film in which Billy Wilder's impeccable talent
as a director and a screenwriter came forward in full force. It is also
considered the first pure film noir. Though Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray have
been
rightfully praised as the murderous lovers, they are nearly overmatched by
the imperishable skill of Edward G. Robinson. Robinson's extended speeches are
delivered like dark, probing arias—they are full of wit, syncopation, and an
intuitive recognition of the sinister that we learn is essential to being a
great insurance detective. There is no better performance in all of film
noir.

Claire Trevor, an adroit master of subtle vocal modulations, blooms downward
in Murder, My Sweet, like a flower overladen with a working girl's perfume.
The actress appears lyrically jaded, but it is easy to see how she helped
define the femme fatale in an era when only allusion was available. Opposite
the
spectacularly ominous Lawrence Tierney in Born To Kill, Trevor projects a
sexual longing that is realistic but never overstated, compelling in its
desperate but bungling confusion. Her performance

[MOPO] CITIZEN KANE On Ebay. Antiques Roadshow the Verified Appraiser?

2007-03-15 Thread Flixspix
I am sure many of you guys have seen the 10 grand listing on Ebay for the
Citizen Kane poster. I of course being Mr. nice guy tried to point out the
error of their listing. I made mention that at the time of the film's roll
out,
a small printed version of the onesheet was made available during the
initial engagements for inserting into big city newspapers, not all that
different
from a herald. I made mention I have seen several on Ebay, and in fact had
one put on linen for a client and that they sell for $150 -$200 I also
pointed out that no dimensions of the poster is posted anywhere in the listing
to
confirm definitely the value of this piece I got this reply:

this is not a reprint. yes the reprints are in full color to help sell them.
this has faded over the years. there was only 1200 made and I have one. this
was shown on the antique road show several months ago with my client and
they verified it is authentic. value 10K - 20K at auction sorry your limited
to
a very small amount of information on this item. if it does not sell we will
be sending this to NY for auction

I replied in a second email saying I never mentioned that this was a
reprint. I also again requested the measurements of the poster to positively
identify. But Antiques Road Show is the verified appraiser of this poster?
Good
grief I doubt seriously they would make such an error

Good Morning Freeman
I will get the correct size later today. thanks for your input and your

Now notice the tonal difference and that reply is signed by an individual

and an owner..but not sure. Still no email about the size, but I know
what it will be. Its trying to gently awaken the seller that what they think
they isn't.

the reason I bring this up is because I have been re-located to the outer

stars present (Yes the shame of slinking back home with my inserts and lobby
cards of Tab Hunter, Debi Reynolds, and Beverly Garland). However they do
have
Pee Wee Herman this time.

So in the spirit of if you can't beat'em, join'emnot only will I have
some great lobby cards and vintage posters many on linen I will have
inexpensive and virtually mint 50's sci-fi and horror, sword and sandal, even

[MOPO] GREATEST SPORTS MOVIES

2007-01-14 Thread Flixspix
Its always interesting to think back which sports related films rise to the
top. Just in quantity it seems the most frequently used sports in films are
without question Baseball and Boxing. Is it because one is easily adapted
to following a group of characters to meld as one, and the other the triumph
of an individual over adversity both easily followed by moviegoers?

So its odd that the same story arcs can's be applied with similar success to
say volleyball , and shot put. I guess its a question of how compelling.
Baseball is a sport everyone plays at some point when young, whether at
school, little league or family reunions so the immediacy of familiarity is
instant with a moviegoer. But couldn't the same be said of volleyball or
hockey?
With respect to the individual, boxing is familiar and has the overriding
risk of physical harm, but so does long distance running, powerlifting or
downhill skiing.

Boxing may edge out in overall number the rather subjective notion of
greatness or classic status when compared to films about baseball even though
I
would think baseball is the sport most frequently used in film by almost
double. And a lot of the truly great baseball films one is still following
the
rise of a single individual

My Boxing List
RAGING BULL (classic character rise and fall brilliant and visceral)
THE CHAMP(King Vidor classic comeback with tragic results)
HARDER THEY FALL (underrated drama of corruption in boxing)
WHEN WE WERE KINGS (killer evaluation of the Ali-Foreman fight)
ROCKY/CINDERELLA MAN (basically the same well executed crowd pleasers)
CITY LIGHTS (comic genius set piece in a boxing ring yet to ever be equaled)

My Baseball List
FIELD OF DREAMS (baseball as metaphor for life and second chances)
THE NATURAL (mythic treatment of good Vs evil beautifully executed)
BULL DURHAM (comedy and sex never better folded into sports)
LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (funny, melancholy and great period detail)

Re: [MOPO] Buyer pays PayPal fees?

2006-12-03 Thread Flixspix
Roland,
First try the passive aggressive approach. But only if you really want the
item. But this approach positions you as a good guy while still busting him
if he tries to charge for the fees Say something like

Thanks for getting back to me on the cost relating to shipping. The cost
is fair and reasonable and for that I thank you. As you are abroad,
obviously the fastest and simplest way to pay for an Ebay item is through
Paypal.

However let me be a friend to you for a moment. Apparently you are not
aware of a critical violation of Ebay's policy. Anyone reported charging for
fees associated with Paypal, or inflating shipping to cover Paypal fees is
subject to immediate suspension. I certainly don't mind taking the time to
make
you aware of this aggressively policed rule of sales As you know others may
not be as understanding and file a complaint without ever giving you the
chance to explain that you were sincerely unaware. If you have your policy

[MOPO] Bill At Granada Posters Wins The Prize

2006-10-11 Thread Flixspix

Mopo'ers

I could not let this go without praise. I just received
a rolled poster from Bill at Granada Posters in Texas. I have never
received a poster packed to arrive as safely EVER as this one
was. He took a square carton measuring 6" X 6" x 42" and
inside box he had 4 evenly cut strips of styrofoam 1" thick by
4" wide by 32" long. Those kind of locked in place
creating a cushioned square cartoninside the double-ply cardboard
carton.

Then asturdy 3" round tube, a quality I wish
most peoplewould use as standard, was wrapped smoothlyat least
three times around the entire length of the tube which thenslid snugly
within the styrofoam walls allowing5" of bubble on each end of
carton

You would have thought I purchased a rolled Real Art
FRANKENSTEIN but no, a 30 x 40 GODFATHER and the trouble
taken so the thick stock paper wouldn't ding or crimp in transit.

Thanks Bill you raised the bar.

[MOPO] Frankenstein 1951

2006-10-09 Thread Flixspix

Rich,
I was watching that auction also.A
redflag went off in my headabout artydeco who bid multiple
times in not so large increments. But with a user ID of evilbidr, that just
sounds like someonewho is ahorror
collector.

Given that, Claude is of the philosophy, all other
distractions aside, if there is a piece on Ebay he wants, he bids what he
is willing to pay and if what he bids isn't enough, he doesn't agonizeor
become suspicious of activity before or after his bid.He is of the
mind that "posters are like buses, eventually another one comes
along."

Now if seller were to come to Claude and say,"I
have failed to collect from the high bidder", orthe rarer and equally
unbelievable, "I actually have two examples of this poster" as next in
line would you be willing to purchase, then I wouldhave to think,
knowing Claude, would tell him to take a flying leap. But Claude
doesn't need me to speak for him I am just assuming based on his street smart
savvy.

Both the above scenarios has happened to me, but with tin toys
and not posters. Both times I declined which was painful but it forced
sellers to relist. One item sold relistedthree weeks laterfor
about the same, the other which was relistedabout 5 days laterI
purchasedfor several hundred dollars cheaper.

[MOPO] Signatures On Posters Have Consistently Been A Bonanza For Me

2006-09-26 Thread Flixspix

Interesting that many people think a
signature on a vintage piece may more often than not hurt instead of
help. I think the nay-sayers have never really had any experience
with that. I would file this in THEORIES THAT COLLAPSE
UNDER EXAMINATION where such declarationslike "Always buy a mint folded
onesheet over a linenbacked version, it'srarer and far more in demand" are
filed away.

I was fortunate to have a
CITIZEN KANE insert consigned to me signed by Orson Welles. The
provenance was beyond reproach.Insert was NMint folded with one fold
fairly deep where insert was folded back the wrong direction in order for Welles
to sign easier while sitting at a table. Insert was purchased with buyer
fully aware that a mint rolled version would be up for auction only 4-5
days later at Heritage. But I estimated what it would sell for and then
felt strongly Welles' signature worth a 20% extra premium based on the
results of signed 3 sheets years earlier I was able to track down.

I followed live on-line with great
anticipation and when bidding stopped so did my pulse. Heritage's insert
sold foralmost three thousand dollarsLESS.All of a
sudden acid reflux is causinga burning inching its way up my esophagus
while thoughts ofclient dissatisfaction extrapolating to a drive by
hit ora smart bomb on my headwerebeginning to seem perfect
legitimate scenarios inmy immediate future. I was in agony.
But in one of the most considerate actions ever madeon my behalf that I
had ever experienced in this business, while the auction at Heritage was still
going my phone rang and it was my client. Immediately launching into
"I know you and you are probably upset over the sale etc. ... Do not worry I
am thrilled with my signed insert and I have no regrets what so
ever" That was class.Insert has since been sold at an
even greater premium, again keeping in mind this over a mint rolled
version.

So maybe Wells is one of only a handful that a
signature can so impactpositively the sale of a vintage item. But
the same dramatic differenceas a percentage of sale price over the
average price has occurred for mewith a Lucas signature on THX-1138,
Charleton Heston on anything from Ben Hur, Patrick Swayze on Dirty Dancing
and David Lean big time on Lawrence of Arabia. But I was lucky as these
arematerials with directors or actor associations that are so cool.
My most recent example was I had the great italian super-photobusta on
linen for JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and had listed on Ebay twice possibly
three times with no sales or even solicitations for an offEbay
purchase. With the help of fellow Mopoer Ron Magid at the
Spring Courts, while I manned my table he got Ray Harryhausen (for $20
) to sign the piece along the bottom with a bold black marker.
I listed on Ebay and it sold in 5hoursBuy It Now at a higher price
than I had originally listed the first time.

But on the whole, singling out the Courts Shows or the
upcoming Chiller theatre, theseevents host a ballroom full of forgettable
20 seconds of fame personalities that rarely qualify as household
names..Hell if you farted on live TV back in the 60's they'll
havea table waiting for you if desired. But people seek their
autographs and pay to have them. But I made a very interesting observation at
the last Courts Show. The two big "draws" were Mickey Rooney and
Debbie Reynolds. They actually caused lines to form especially
Rooney on Saturday. What I noticed going down their lines besides
the fact that 80% of the people were as wide as they were tall and the event
again 100% white, was that no one was having original studio material
signed. Most were blank 3 x 5cards the balance stills or
magazines. I had Rooney and Reynolds lobby cards as low as $10 and
not one sold. So it does beg the question why mix? But clearly its
the autographseekers the dog and poster vendors the tail..each
drawing their own collectors.

But would anyone there or at Chiller Whatever in Jersey,
their signature actually undermine the sale of a vintage piece? I don't
think so, at worstthe impact would beno measurable increase
in sale price. And when offering a signed piece, its just another
positive to encourage a purchase over a competitor.

Butit would be great to hear from Rich and Grey on
the following. Rich, say you had a comic book slabbed and graded a 9.2 of
the third Batman comic book. If it were signed by either the illustrator
or author on the cover.how much if any penalty in grade points would be
levied? What if it was Walt Disney's signature on aDonald
Duck comic book?

Or to Grey, a nmint to mint folded Double Indemnity
onesheet is in the offer by Heritage. If it was signed by Fred MacMurray
would you alter the onesheet's grading downward or simply ignore its presence
and grade the poster as submitted by its condition?

[MOPO] Remember The Discussion Of What Film Posters Are Visible In A Movie?

2006-09-17 Thread Flixspix

Freeman
here

This has nothing to do with anything but I am just
distracting before going back on Andale to throw even more good money at
Ebay with no tangiblereturns...kind of like a strip club.

Anyway PLAY IT AGAIN SAM was on
HBO. What a hilarious film. But more amazing was the
posters, no doubt all real, none in frames and all over the
apartment of Woody Allen's hereplaying the most neurotic film critic on
the planet livingin San Francisco (weird to see the
PacificOcean and not Central Parkwhile Woody afoot.)
Anyway above breeze through to kitchen was THE JUNGLE
PRINCESS, TARZAN AND THE LEOPARD WOMAN, ALL THROUGH THE
NIGHT. In kitchen KEY LARGO,
near front door re-release1sht
CASABLANCA.Far right of sofa on wall an original release
CASABLANCA insert. And tons of festival and rep house
calendars.

But the most jaw droppingpiece, a
pinned up Six Sheet ofMALTESE FALCONdirectly above his bed. With
bottom edges crimping from pillows hitting. Ouch.

Film shot in 1972 possibly these
pieces were still dirt cheap. Taped up, no
frame

Quickly wrote down one of my favorite bits of
dialogue for your Sunday chuckle

Allan
Felix: That's quite a lovely Jackson Pollack, isn't it?
Girl in museum: Yes, it is. Allan Felix: What does it say to you? Girl in museum: It restates the negativeness of the
universe. The hideous lonely emptiness of existence. Nothingness. The
predicament of man forced to live in a barren, godless eternity like a tiny
flame flickering in an immense void with nothing but waste, horror and
degradation, forming a useless bleak straitjacket in a black absurd cosmos.
Allan Felix: What are you doing Saturday
night? Girl in museum: Committing suicide.
Allan Felix: What about Friday
night?

[MOPO] David Kusumoto His Quite Colorful Response

2006-08-26 Thread Flixspix

Re Kusumoto's colorful
response,

I was just wonderingwhen writing a
thoughtful essay if or what colors hammer a point home. Admittedly, my mind began to drift to unrelated thoughts
bythe second time Jeannie's name is mentioned such as "is my left front speaker of my theatre system working properly
while watching POSEIDONon
DVD" But I remained intrigued by what is behind Koose's use of
differently colored paragraphs.

Do I give more weight to those
commentshighlighted in vermillion or periwinkle? When reading, do I move my lips only with those paragraphs
incadmium?

I have always thought, butthen again this is just me, that the best
color for a David Kusomoto essay is the color brief. It goes with any
decor.

Honestly JR,
Your posts are catching many of us by surprise in their
unnecessarily caustic tone or recently down right bizarre knee jerk
reaction. Using posters instead of planetary bodies, were Walter
Reuben and Tony Normand arrogant in theirinvestigations
and conclusionsthat Saul Bass did not design the WEST SIDE STORY
onesheet or the onesheet of BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ after years
of being identified as his work?. Of course not

So youbeing intelligent in the broadest sense,
your comment on a global convention of some of the brightest physicists and
astronomers in the world reaching consensus on a controversial issue
as being arrogant, I really couldn't tell if you were pulling our Mopo

Regarding Chloe,
Guys she's doing just fine, after Brown Bunny she has
gone on to lend her acting chops as one of the three wives in HBO's BIG

Disregarding Mel
Wheninibriated, with mind clouded and appropriate stop
gaps with regard to sociability impaired what usually bubbles up is a window
into the real fabric of a person. Mel's been found out but for many
including myself his legacy of misogyny, homophobia, and anti-Semitism was
veiled in many of his films but clearly in evidence when working with him at
press events and publicity tours. He is foul. Alcoholism may
have been the result of trying to stifle his inner demons of turmoil and
conflict carrying the weight of such hate and intolerancethat were drummed
into him as an adolescent, but I still have a hard time summoning up the
appropriate compassion to forgive him or the scores of other personalities and
spokespersonswho carry the torch for their politicalor religious
affiliationsand in turn their frequently stifling and repressive
dogmas. Iknow that finding forgiveness is the moral benchmark
but I would much rathersee them smote from this

You stated with absolute certainty the following

JR. I can disprove that statement100 fold
rendering thatdeclaration to its knees. Now are you sure you want to
go to that near-to-mint, un restored, original release edition of

a whole lot of posters requiredto be printed, the minimum run
we know having to bein numbers enough tocover 7500 screens meaning
an excess of 20 thousand posters. Extrapolating my observation
furtherI was asking how can this title or the scores like it ever be a
valuable collectible years down the road when introduced into the poster
pipeline at these staggering quantities.

Scarcity is only one of about four considerations when a
poster is assessed for its value.my point was this poster and the scores
like it from the final 3 STAR WARS on will never be scarce so
getting back to Rudy Franchi's original declaration, we will be
selling and reselling the same 500 posters for years to come-- posters that
wereprinted in quantities a mere fraction of the totals being issued in
the last ten years.

Yo ho, yo ho. A pirate's life for… everyone.

Or so it seems after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Buena Vista's swarthy sequel marauded over 8,500 screens at

[MOPO] A HUGE AUCTION ON THE HORIZON SET PHASERS TO STUN

2006-07-06 Thread Flixspix

July 6, 2006

It's an Auction, Jim, but Not as We
Know It
By JAMES BARRON

The stuff of "Star Trek" — uniforms, communicators and other props, including
pointy rubber ears — has boldly gone to a place where the intrepid crew never
took the Enterprise: the Bronx.
In a windowless warehouse in Crotona Park East, boxes of "Star Trek"
memorabilia that were shipped from the part of the galaxy known as Hollywood are
being cataloged and photographed. The catalogers and photographers work for
Christie's, the auction house that more often handles impressionists and old
masters.
The trove will be sold for dollars. Not Federation credits.
So, hanging on one coat rack in the warehouse are Klingon costumes. On
another are the Enterprise crew's uniforms, even William Shatner's uniform.
"It's a great" — long pause — "leisure suit," said Cathy Elkies, the Christie's
official overseeing the sale.
"Star Trek" fans are passionate. They attend conventions. They know "Star
Trek V: The Final Frontier" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country." They
correct dumb mistakes, no matter how obscure, in any articles having anything to
do with "Star Trek." They take the idea of being a fan to extremes, and proudly
so. And they are not Christie's usual crowd. No one dressed as a Klingon was in
attendance when Christie's sold the dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sashayed
into Madison Square Garden and sang "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy.
So when Christie's marketers asked Ms. Elkies who was the intended audience
for the sale, which is scheduled for Oct. 5-7, she did not have a ready answer.
"I had to say, I really don't know," she said.
That is partly because so few actual props from the various television series
and films have been sold before. The items in the sale had been stored in
warehouses, some since the original 1960's television series went off the air.
But after the cancellation of the UPN prequel "Star Trek: Enterprise" last year,
Paramount decided to lighten its holdings.
Now Christie's is preparing descriptions for each item — descriptions that
are decidedly different from the ones usually found in Christie's catalogs.
Consider this one, for a pair of items that Christie's expects to sell for
$1,000 to $1,500: "Two tribbles of imitation fur stuffed with foam rubber, one
gray and black, the other white, gray and brown."
Tribbles were small life forms that reproduced at remarkable rates, according
to Memory-Alpha.org, one of many sites on the Web devoted
to "Star Trek." Christie's says this pair was used in the "Deep Space Nine"
episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" and also in a "Star Trek: Enterprise"
episode.
Ms. Elkies said she was approaching the sale in "a democratic way" — meaning,
she explained, "We are pricing it so there will be something for everyone." She
said there would be items with estimated prices of $200 or so.
But the estimates on some items are far higher. Christie's expects to sell a
model of the Starship Enterprise-A, made from a plastic hobby kit and used on
"Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" in 1991, for $15,000 to $25,000.
According to the Memory-Alpha site, the Enterprise-A had made its debut in "Star
Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and had gone on a surprisingly speedy journey to the
center of the galaxy in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier."
Christie's also has a model of a Work Bee, which, according to Memory-Alpha,
was "a small utility craft in use by the Federation since the mid-23rd century."
Ms. Elkies said this one was used in the drydock sequences in "Star Trek: The
Motion Picture" and also in the main title sequence of "Deep Space Nine."
Christie's estimates that it will sell for $6,000 to $8,000 at the auction.
Ms. Elkies said she was impressed by the craftsmanship of the costumes and
props. "If you see something on TV, you don't think there's a backside to it,"
she said. "But you see these things and you realize how much time and labor went
into each object."
The Starfleet officer Worf's silver rifle "almost looks like an Uzi," Ms.
Elkies said, lifting it off the shelf, "and it's heavy."
And then there was the Xindi alien in the stasis chamber from the series
"Enterprise." The stasis chamber was a clear plastic cylinder. The Xindi alien
was a yellow figure about the size of a 5-year-old child, with wires attached to
places that, on a human, would be painful if attached without anesthetic.
Ms. Elkies was not a major "Star Trek" fan before she started to organize the
sale. She got her baptism in "Star Trek" mania when she went to a convention in
Germany in May. "The funny part was, I couldn't always tell if it was German or
Klingon that they were speaking," she said.
At 41, she was a small child when "Star Trek" originally went on the air. "I
think it was so different than anything else that was on," she said. "Remember,
we had five channels back then, so we weren't inundated with

a plethora of items all froma collection by a consignor who
collected materials of certain stars he most likely had a personal relationship
with as a an indedpendent publicist for over 40 years. And many of them
were boxoffice champions in their years as leads, but any success
subsequent has everything to do with their co-stars. Some of the names
surprise but trust me, the following have anappeal to
collectors that can best be described as inert. Rudy Franchi
in one ofhis posts described an individual's auction as selling and
re-selling the same 500 titles that everyone else does. Well,
withorders toliquidate collection for whatever the market
pricewill bear irrespective of what he paid for the items three, five or
eventen yearsago, I can honestly say there is a reason 500 titles
are recyled time and again. Introducing scarcely seen vintage paper of
titles starring well known starsis like leading that proverbial horse to
water but unable to make it drink.

Below represent the most frustrating artists to

Danny Kaye -- "White Christmas" excepted

Deanna Durbin- in spite of being one of the biggest
musical stars in Hollywood, saved Universal from bankruptcy (not by
monsters, vampires, or the undead) incredible voice, and was asked by Benito
Mussolini to ask Roosevelt not to intercede in WWII while Churchill asked to see

Donald O'Connor "Singin' In The Rain"

Ava Gardner

Burt Lancaster

Betty Grable

Robert Taylor

Jerry Lewis (Absent Minded Professor
excepted)

Bob Hope Unless teamed up with Bing and Dorothy or
to a lesser extentLucy or Jane (Russell) a stunning indifference to
material

Frank Sinatra (excluding Oceans 11)

Van Johnson

Red Skelton

Audie Murphy

Richard Widmark

And what remains the #1 star in this collection with
unquestionable talent yet virtually impossible to move paper unless priced under
$50 considering his tenure in the business

Michael and Moposties
Enough with the insert Dude. But you will be
pleased to know auctioneer paused to correct listing to make aware to phoners
and people present that piece is graded C minus and please bid as to what you
see and not how listed in the catalogue And then I think it sold to
someone in the room for $300.

Just because no postings on MOPO does not mean you can
gauge its quality. What would you want to hear? That a
lot of pieces passed? Noonly one or two passed I was
aware. Were prices high? No, in fact if you must
know many a dealer were able to procure popular pieces at very,
very good prices. To me that's a successful auction who wants to
attend an auction where everything is high? Sets of lobby cards were
particular stand outs performing well, but still with
potential upsides due to quality and scarcity.

Biggest Surprise? DIRTY HARRY LIFE MAGAZINE
poster around 1200.00 and a Raging Bull signed by Scoresese
and Jake LaMotta 2200.00

Noir was soft but the better Leithold pieces were in previous
auction

Biggest disappointment. While signing in for my paddle
the French UNINVITED sold as the receptionist handed to me.
Nose diving into the auction roomyelling BIDwas to no avail but made
for a spectacular entrance. Damn that poster was really
deluxe,

However, the IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT was
withdrawn due in fact that it was a re-releasefrom I believe
1936surprising two very experienced dealers I know
well.Rudy,that qualifiesas a major screw-up,not
your usual oversight. I haven't a clue who noticed or how it was

[MOPO] Interesting Article In NY TIMES About Ebay

2006-06-04 Thread Flixspix

How eBay Makes Regulations Disappear

By KATIE HAFNER
Published: June 4, 2006

IN quick succession one morning last month, Louisiana state legislators
plowed through a long list of bills, including one to relocate the motor vehicle
commission, another to regulate potentially abusive lending practices, and yet
another that was the handiwork of eBay, the digital shopping mall that bills itself as
"the world's online marketplace."

Cheryl Brown, who is authorized to sell other people's items
on eBay, said she was "blown away" when Louisiana forced her to get a license.

Sherrie Wilks and Jim Steele of the Louisiana Auctioneer
Licensing Board felt the backlash from their license enforcement efforts.

EBay had worked overtime to ensure the passage of Senate Bill 642, which
sought to exempt some Internet transactions — like those that occur on its Web
site — from Louisiana licensing requirements for businesses conducting auctions.
As the State Senate's Commerce Committee convened to consider the bill, Duane
Cowart, an eBay lobbyist, testified that forcing eBay "trading assistants" to
fork over $300 for a license was unduly burdensome.
"What they do on the Internet is not an auction, and they are not
auctioneers," Mr. Cowart told the committee. Trading assistants take items on
consignment from other owners and put them up for bid on eBay, but Mr. Cowart
said their activities were more akin to placing classified ads. Louisiana's
senators seemed to agree with him wholeheartedly. "I think eBay is great," said
one, while another regaled the room about his adventures shopping for a Plymouth
Prowler on eBay. State Senator Noble E. Ellington, a Democrat who sponsored the
bill at Mr. Cowart's behest, beamed as his colleagues gave the legislation their
unanimous support.
EBay's lobbying activities are not confined to Louisiana. As the company has
spread its innovative and influential wings across the Internet, it has also
woven together a muscular and wily lobbying apparatus that spans 25 states. "It
is a fast-moving train, and if you get in front of it you'll get flattened,"
said Sherrie Wilks, an official with Louisiana's licensing agency, who is
concerned that eBay flouts regulatory oversight by persuading state legislators
to take the company's side.
Regulators in other states also say that when they try to erect guidelines
around eBay's activities, they quickly encounter the realities of the company's
political power, raising anew the perennial questions about the proper balance
among public policy, consumer protection and business interests. EBay's lobbying
tactics, meanwhile, illustrate the spoils to be won when a savvy, resourceful
company combines local political persuasion and grass-roots rallying to get
lucrative regulatory exemptions that allow it to safeguard its profits.
EBay's efforts have been remarkably successful, and the company, which has
worked tirelessly to cultivate its image as a friendly neighborhood bazaar even
as it engages in hard-nosed lobbying, is not shy about boasting of its
victories. Last year, Ohio passed a law that would have regulated eBay sellers,
but the company moved quickly — with the help of seasoned lobbyists — to have a
pre-emptive and more favorable bill passed.
"We realized what was there, and we worked with local lobbyists and were able
to get the law reversed," said Tod Cohen, eBay's vice president for government
relations. He oversees the company's efforts to convince state lawmakers of a
core eBay belief: that state regulation can impede the flow of e-commerce.
The Federal Trade Commission, which has loosened regulations across a broad
range of industries, appears to agree. Late last week, responding to a request
from Mr. Ellington for an analysis of the Louisiana bill, the agency advised
that the bill promoted competition and increased consumer choice.
Unlike many other Internet companies, eBay has to be especially fleet-footed
when it comes to stopping what it perceives as hostile regulation, whether it
involves the growing number of eBay drop-off stores — places like UPS stores and
small shops where people take their goods to be sold on eBay — or the more
general category of trading assistants. Anyone engaged in selling on the site
depends on a relatively friction-free environment in order to make a profit. So
does eBay, because its overall corporate goal is to keep sales volumes high.

At any given moment, 89 million items are for sale on eBay, and the mother
ship — eBay itself — gets a fee for each successful transaction. It also charges
its 193 million registered users listing fees for any products they display on
the site. EBay's gross transaction fees for the first quarter of 2006 alone were
more than $500 million, a 30 percent increase over the same quarter in 2005.
Keeping regulators at bay, particularly those whose efforts might slow down
sales traffic, is a particularly high

[MOPO] Framing The French Double Panel.

2006-04-10 Thread Flixspix

Tom,

Your framer is wimping out. What you are asking them to
do is simple remount this piece of canvas probably 66" x
97"onto a wood frame that has been structurally enhanced with additional
support, 1" x 2" slats angled from connecting top of frame to the sides of
frames. Also metal L joints, the kind used to support book
shelves are to be screwed into all 4 inside corners. Then using the extra
canvas surrounding poster is carefully folded over frame and stapled but
not excessively taught. That will hold in check
rippling.

Outer ornamental frame is then measured carefully to receive
inner frame. That means it has to be a thickness to accommodate the
plexiglass and innerframe. Outer frame then is screwed to inner frame
using two hole metal connectors when 2 panel liesface down
onfloor protectedby a movingblanket or carpet
remnant.

With the fortified inner frame connected to outer
frame two people should be able to carry on its side the framed 2 panel
with a minimum of bowing. Use 150 pound test eyelets two
on each side one on top of the other measured from top frame 15" and
17" down. Then screw hooks exactly where you want picture to
hang on wall again two on each side equal distance apart as they are on
back of frame and hook them onto the eyelets.

This isn't rocket science but it is awkward to handle due to
size and requires exact measurements.

[MOPO] Shipping Nightmare

2006-03-24 Thread Flixspix

Doug that sucks. For two pieces to have made it through
60 plus years only to have some nimrod feel the mail service was
handled by a butterfly's wings is just outrageous. I would neg
him.

Reminds me of my two disasters. First was paying a
fortune for a mint vinyl Jawa (Star Wars collectors know the small figure I am
referencing where an extremely limited amount were made with a vinyl cape in
lieu of wool which proved far more durable) and it was shipped with zero
packing simply stuck in a white business envelope. The other was a
guy shipped me the only known halfsheet style B from the original release of THE
WOMEN without taking it out of its metal frame and regular glass
plane. Heplaced halfsheet in a box with several inches to
spare on all sides with only one paper dinner napkin taped
overtwo-thirds of the glass and nothing else. Shattered glass simply
rocked back and forth across the three stars faces from Durham to LA. I
was so pissed off I shipped the broken glass back to him hoping he would cut
himself.

Re: [MOPO] To Sell Oscar Or Not To Sell Or Donate

2006-03-04 Thread Flixspix

Freeman here,
As Tom knows I was investigating his Oscar for several weeks
as to its authenticity and market value for a very motivated client. While
there are still some questions I have about the piece that could have only been
satisfied having the piece in hand for a thorough examination, something
he curiously would not allow nor would hestand behindits
authenticity with a money back guarantee if on the very slim chance it was
evaluated as something less than authentic. That wasn't really the deal
breaker but certainly contributed to my client bowing out. The other
overridingissue was the lack of a base plate. No one I or my client
talked to in great detailfelt there was any tangible value anywhere near
the ten thousand dollar price for theworld famous
statuette.

So donating to the Academy would certainly be a magnanimous
gesture, but I certainly would pursue some advantage with taxes. But
that might prove a tricky deduction as you can only deduct dollar amount paid
over its recognized price which I believe is less than $700. To
ascertain an appraised value would be to have it evaluated by a licensed
appraiser in such matters but again that would require sending the piece
most likely here to LA. And after numerouspersuasive and earnest
emails I could not get that to happen. Nevertheless my opinion of Tom was
raised to the highest notch as he gave new meaning to the word "intransigent".

[MOPO] From walter reuben

2006-02-24 Thread Flixspix

hello
I got this email a few days ago sent via the ebay
system. It was about the title card which I currently have listed in an
ebay store with a buy it now price of $1,000.
Dear Walter are you aware there is another seller
on ebay selling this card with a buy it now price of $695 their name is
jessie_cat807 and are registered in Canada but are shipping from
SanFrancisco i was just looking at their full scan and despite them saying it is
better than yours they appear to have taken your scan and used it on their site
if you look closely there are a couple of marks on your card that would not be
on anybody elses a little dot above the G in nothing the bottom left hand corner
and 2 thirds up the left hand border i doubt they even have the card or why else
would they use your scan yours most sincerely

I had a lot of other things on my mind when I got
this a few days ago and only thought to check it out just now.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=2321item=7592162855
You will notice that the seller claims to have
"bought this about three years ago from a Heritage auction."
I went and looked at the Heritage online sales
realized list. They never listed the title card separately, and, the one
time they sold an incomplete set of the cards, which included the title card, I
bought it, in 2005.
The only other time Heritage sold cards from this
film, they sold the British lobby set, which looks nothing like this American
lobby card.

[MOPO] For Sale Exclusive To MOPO'ers ORIGINAL SHAW BROS. CLASSIC POSTERS

2006-02-20 Thread Flixspix

I just obtained
four authentic rolled posters from a relation of Sir Run Run Shaw literally
hand carried aboard a flight from HONG KONG As you know he and his
brother formed Shaw Brothers Releasing and were responsible for the
production of some 200 Kung Fu films of which a handful have ascended
into cult statusand influenced many a director, cinematographer and
writer, the most notable beingQuentin Tarantino. As these
pieces require a knowledge and appreciation most likely not found on
Ebay, I thought I would give the learned assembly of MOPO first
  opportunity to these rare pieces.
1. THE 36TH
  CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN '71 $550

  http://images.andale.com/f2/103/113/1705198/1139373345575_36thChamberOfShaolin.jpg

  THE GOLDEN ARMS '79 $400

  http://images.andale.com/f2/103/113/1705198/1140183247468_BoxerFromShantung.jpg

Kill Bill Volumes 1 2 have scenes
heavily influenced from the above 4 films. In the film notesof
bothDVDs, Tarantino refers to Shaw Brothers Films on several
occasions and specifically titles 1 3. Further title #4 BOXER FROM
SHANTUNG which by the way the assistant director was none other than John Woo,
starred Gordon Liu. In Kill Bill II Liuplaysthe
characterPai Mei, a character that was introduced in Boxer From
  Shangtung a remarkablebit of stunt
casting.

Anyway posters are
authentic, have been stored away for nearly 25 years and are mint.
Price includes shipping to anywhere in the world and available on a first
emailed first served basis. The prices may seem arresting
but there is scant supply of these titles in circulation presently and in
  mint, rolled condition quite impossible.

[MOPO] Framed Larger Posters - Warping Can Be An Aesthetic Bitch

2006-02-05 Thread Flixspix

Tom and gang,
My experience is consistent with your comments. I
had a 2 panelFrench Lawrence De Arabie (63" x 94") and
initially it was really a buckler which drove me nuts. The framer came
back out to my house, and putting in both leaves into my dining table and
clamping plexi-glass on one end I was able to create a workspace to handle the
size of the poster. we basically trimmed more of the linen at top and
bottom for it appeared the buckling was more a quotient of poster creating more
slack from hanging vertically and possibly moisture in the air, rare in LA
but this was January a rainy season...thus buckling as it had no room to
stretch its legs. We staple gunned very evenlyonto the linen as
closely to the actual paper tightly along top of inner frame - that'sthe
support inter-frame that reinforces the outer, decorative frame due to
theweight of the plexi-glass. Then only lightly pulling canvas to
bottom of inter-frame to allow for shrinkage in warmer months. It worked
great but I think if I had attempted this in Summer I would have had more sag or
warp in winter as poster relaxes due to moisture.

Theabove was my firstproblem experiencing this
with large paper. I nowhave a slightly different approach
whenframing such posters, especially 6 sheets. My clients do not
want sagging. So now I assist a framer I use regularly and we wrap poster
around an interframe with excess linenas if re-stretching a
canvas. The paper usually isjust short of flush with edge of inter
frame. I was worried that in drier monthsthat poster
could split if temp variations caused to shrink too tightly. So when
stapling linen to frame, we now staple all four sides witha slightly
relaxed stretch that allows for some give and take due to environment
changes. Of course many installations are in homes or buildings with
very regulated temperatures. However I still do the same as heat would
cause subtle tightening. This has worked out great thus far.
Noscreaming calls of terror with a poster splitting from being stretched
to tightly...if that even ever happens. The trick is to staple with
very little space in between each. For example I counted the number of
staples used in one of my last installations and it was close to 300.
Admittedly its a bitch when switching out 6 sheetsor 4 foglioswhen
client wants to rotate out a poster. Pulling every one of the staples out
carefully so as to not shred or tear excess linen so it can be hung again later
is agonizingly TEDIOUS and hell on the forearm. But its a service call and
it adds to cash flow and great one on one client interaction.

Your rippling though is not necessarily exclusive to
large paper. A onesheet can demonstrate similar traits...and that can
be a function of linenbacker cutting poster out of its original stretched
rack while not 100% dry. If still slightly holding moisture and cut
out early, as it dries, poster will undulate when laid flat due to cotton
backing drying with no tension to its four sides. That is why whenever I
am in receipt of poster freshly linen backed I lay in my flat-files with 4 large
heavy Italian tiles wrapped in heavy plastic to protect from scratching surfaces
and place all four two across and two down all but covering entire stack of one
sheets for about a week. Occasional warping hasn't been an issue since
coupled with reminders to linenbacking studio to not cut out a poster
before its time. For French posters I lay in between to equally sized
sheets of plexi-glass and weight down with heavy books. Overly cautious,
maybe but it avoids problems down the line.

[MOPO] Re Does MOPO Need Fixing?

2006-02-04 Thread Flixspix

Scott,
The site is completely satisfying from where I sit. I
think the occasional tangents are on the whole welcome and in general stay
pretty well in check ormembers doindeed call FLAG ON THE PLAY and
discussion halts rather abruptly. JR isn't the only one, there are
others, myself included who prefer to cautiondirectly to the posting
member.

Scott,I feel mostpeople who have
remained onMopo as this subject has been covered many times before
think open questions regarding political, religious and lifestyle topics are
inappropriate.. But using Brokeback as an example most
observationsin the past days and weeks were okay until the
recentopen endedand obvious answer of theChad Allen
casting in a Christian filmcausing fringe religious group
objections.

THE BROKEBACKMOUNTAIN dialogue and
observationssimply mirrored the phenomenon many print and broadcast
outlets are evaluating, with discussion of demographics, marketing
and the like..and because of it, you can bet there were at least a
dozen dealers who proceeded to stock up on the film's poster because of the
participation and thoughtful observations by so manyon MOPO,
realizingit would not be a stretch to say its a subject among the poster
cognoscenti outside as well. And that means poster
sales.

I recently submitted the Joan Crawford video mega-mix
link. Its a tangent that I felt a majority would get a kick out of.
I would therefore hate to see MOPO so straight jacketed as tohave such
amusements leached out completely.

Scott carry on and thank you very much to boot. I have
had probably more luck and success than anyone selling posters directlyon
MOPO. At last count it was over 20 grand in 3 years..yet
only14posters total. So again thank you.

[MOPO] ARTICLE IN NY TIMES REGARDING EBAY , FAKES SOLD AND TIFFANY'S SUIT

2006-01-29 Thread Flixspix

January 29, 2006

Seeing Fakes, Angry Traders Confront
EBay
By KATIE HAFNER

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 28 — A year ago Jacqui Rogers, a retiree in southern
Oregon who dabbles in vintage costume jewelry, went on eBay and bought 10 butterfly brooches made by Weiss, a
well-known maker of high-quality costume jewelry in the 1950's and 1960's.
At first, Ms. Rogers thought she had snagged a great deal. But when the
jewelry arrived from a seller in Rhode Island, her well-trained eye told her
that all of the pieces were knockoffs.
Even though Ms. Rogers received a refund after she confronted the seller,
eBay refused to remove hundreds of listings for identical "Weiss" pieces. It
said it had no responsibility for the fakes because it was nothing more than a
marketplace that links buyers and sellers.
That very stance — the heart of eBay's business model — is now being
challenged by eBay users like Ms. Rogers who notify other unsuspecting buyers of
fakes on the site. And it is being tested by a jewelry seller with far greater
resources than Ms. Rogers: Tiffany Company, which has sued eBay for
facilitating the trade of counterfeit Tiffany items on the site.
If Tiffany wins its case, not only would other lawsuits follow, but eBay's
very business model would be threatened because it would be nearly impossible
for the company to police a site that now has 180 million members and 60 million
items for sale at any one time.
Of course, fakes are sold everywhere, but the anonymity and reach of the
Internet makes it perfect for selling knockoffs. And eBay, the biggest online
marketplace, is the center of a new universe of counterfeit with virtually no
policing.
EBay, based in San Jose, Calif., argues that it has no obligation to
investigate counterfeiting claims unless the complaint comes from a "rights
owner," a party holding a trademark or copyright. A mere buyer who believes an
item is a fake has almost no recourse.
"We never take possession of the goods sold through eBay, and we don't have
any expertise," said Hani Durzy, an eBay spokesman. "We're not clothing experts.
We're not car experts, and we're not jewelry experts. We're experts at building
a marketplace and bringing buyers and sellers together."
Company officials say they do everything they can to stop fraud. The company
says only a minute share of the items being sold at any given time — 6,000 or so
— are fraudulent. But that estimate reflects only cases that are determined by
eBay to be confirmed cases of fraud, like when an item is never delivered.
Experienced eBay users say that the fraud goes well beyond eBay's official
numbers, and that counterfeiters easily pass off fakes in hundreds of
categories.
"EBay makes a lot of money from a lot of small unhappy transactions," said
Ina Steiner, the editor and publisher of AuctionBytes.com, an online newsletter.
"If you've lost a few thousand dollars, you might go the extra mile to recover
it. But if you've lost $50 or $20 you may never be able to prove your case, and
in the meantime eBay has gotten the listing fee and the closing fee on that
transaction."
The Tiffany lawsuit, in addition to accusing eBay of facilitating
counterfeiting, also contends that it "charges hundreds of thousands of dollars
in fees" for counterfeit sales.
In 2004, Tiffany secretly purchased about 200 items from eBay in its
investigation of how the company was dealing with the thousands of pieces of
counterfeit Tiffany jewelry. The jeweler found that three out of four pieces
were fakes.
The case will go to trial by the end of this year, said James B. Swire, an
attorney with Arnold Porter, a law firm representing Tiffany. The legal
question — whether eBay is a facilitator of fraud — is a critical issue that
could affect not only eBay's future but Internet commerce generally, said Thomas
Hemnes, a lawyer in Boston who specializes in intellectual property.
"If eBay lost, or even if they settled and word got out that they settled, it
would mean they would have to begin policing things sold over eBay, which would
directly affect their business model," Mr. Hemnes said. "The cost implied is
tremendous."
But eBay members like Ms. Rogers have little desire to wait for court
decisions; they say that the uncontrolled flood of fakes is driving down the
value of the authentic goods.
For the past few months, Ms. Rogers and three women she met on eBay who are
also costume jewelry buffs have banded together to track the swindlers they say
are operating in their jewelry sector. "People have faith that eBay will take
care of them, but it doesn't," Ms. Rogers said. "EBay has done nothing."
Carrie Pollack, who sells jewelry from her home in Sudbury, Mass., and is
part of Ms. Rogers's group, said an authentic Weiss brooch of good quality could
command $150. But she said the profusion of counterfeits had confused the market
and diluted the value of such a pin to as

[MOPO] HELP ON HONDO ONE SHEET

2006-01-29 Thread Flixspix

Guys,
Need some informational assistance onthe
JohnWayneHONDO onesheet. I have a HONDO onesheet with
the 3D banner across the bottom of poster, then just below it
the usual credit block etc. But there is no copy write
information or the NSS numbers usually found in far right
corner.

I have an extremely annoyed client so there is some
urgency here. I thought it strange, but I checked my onesheet
against Bruce Hershenson's JULY 2004
publicationof JOHN WAYNE POSTERS AUCTION and he
dedicates a full page to that onesheet. It is clearly obvious his
onesheet likewise does not have that information as well. However in
checking Heritage's database, they have HONDO, exactly as mine and
the one featured in Bruce's catalogue with respect to 3-D and
there's does have the fine small print.

Is there any explanation as to why there might be this
discrepancy?
Right now my client is returning the onesheet because he
is unmoved by merely Bruce H's catalogue image and admittedly I might be curious
as to this unusual contradiction. Any input appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

[MOPO] BEST MOVIE POSTER IN COLLECTION

2006-01-29 Thread Flixspix

Actually I am pleased how the comments
have gone because they have nothing to do with value, but more an
inexplicable attraction to a piece and no matter howmany truly great
pieces that have come and gone whether in "inventory" or "collection"you
can't bring yourself to part with it. Mine like Rick's may
also have something to do with its scarcity, knowing you are in possession
of something no one in the world likely owns.I have such a piece however I
do know of one other but that is fine, the owneris supposedly dead
even though he keeps bidding and selling on Ebay which only adds to the
tilt.
Its a lost 1912 Italian
production of HOMER'S ODYSSEY and this is the US half sheet sized
poster, a Morgan stone litho that has to be seen to be believed its

their expert linen backing to address any touch ups to fold lines and optimize
their appeal when displaying.

I am preferring to sell these in one lot. Prior to this
offer I had enlisted MOPO's resident Chan expert, the oft
imitated but never equaled, Claude Litton, to impart his opinion on the
collection. Obviously Warner Oland Chan's are the most
in demand.Wellokay that's a given. But he did mention that the
collection did include posters withseveralfeaturing images of black
co-star Mantan Moreland that can significantly increase theirdemand.
In particular he singled out the onesheet for Black Magic which accounts on its
own forjust lessthan a thirdof the asking price for the entire
collection, aprice he felt was exactly right. Also
with regards to the last two Winters' Chans, Key Luke returned to play
number one son a role he originated from the Oland Chansbut
in life, Luke playing Winters' son was actually older. That
may actually trump Ava Gardner playing Loren Green's daughter
in EARTHQUAKE.but I digress.

ALL NINE ONESHEETS . $3500
Shipping is $40 within the Continental US and
abroad is close to $100.

The posters each have their own individual link

[MOPO] Article In NY TIMES Regarding Poster Design Hey And Happy New Year Friends

2006-01-01 Thread Flixspix

January 1, 2006

Not Just Another Half-Dozen Pretty,
Floating Faces
By CHRISTIAN MOERK

SINCE the dawn of film marketing, studios have relied on posters featuring
"floating heads": as many movie star faces as can be crammed onto a single page.
In 1927, for instance, state-of-the-art ads for "The Jazz Singer" featured two disembodied Al Jolson heads - one in blackface, one without
makeup.
Since then floating heads have become an industry cliché: the formula that
once guaranteed success is now so ubiquitous that posters in that vein are
nearly invisible. So what does it take to get noticed some 80 years later,
especially when you're selling yet another horror film, without the luxury of
big stars?
Surprisingly, the answer may be fine art.
Tim Palen, the executive vice president of worldwide marketing for Lionsgate
- the company responsible for the gory "Saw" movies - was recently looking for a fresh
campaign to introduce "Hostel," a slasher film that is to open on Jan. 6.
Directed by Eli Roth, it is about a group of gullible and horny American males
who find themselves in a Slovakian hostel, where promises of easy sex turn to
gruesome snuff.
Mr. Palen said he figured that a poster with mangled bodies wouldn't do the
trick.
So he dropped by the airy, tastefully decorated Chelsea studio of the
Australian photographer Mark Kessell. A soft-spoken former physician who
practiced medicine in Sydney for what he calls "several unsatisfying years," Mr.
Kessell, 49, now takes pictures of things he's fully aware the larger public may
not appreciate. One collection of daguerreotypes, "Perfect Specimens," shows the
human body in its physical extremes; there are several shots of fetuses and old
people near death.
But it was Mr. Kessell's "Florilegium" (or "collection of floral images")
daguerrotypes that caught Mr. Palen's eye: each image is close-up of a surgical
instrument, so poetically rendered that it seems almost organic. Some of the
macabre implements resemble exotic flowers. One, from a distance, could be
mistaken for the horns of a gazelle. "We were sort of blocked, and all the
pieces fell into place once I saw that image," Mr. Palen explained. A deal was
made to use that daguerreotype, which actually shows a surgical clamp. It now
appears in theaters and on widespread promotions. (Billboards for "Hostel" rely
on a more conventional image of a masked tormentor with a chain saw, which, a
Lionsgate spokeswoman explained, translated more easily to the horizontal
format.)
Mr. Kessell may seem an unlikely choice to sell unapologetic horror to a
large youth audience; he has no interest whatever in popular culture. Over tea
in his loft, the elegantly dressed Mr. Kessell confessed to not having seen
"Hostel" or, indeed, to remembering the last film he had seen.
"It may have been 'Dogville,' " he finally allowed. With a grin, he said that
in selling his work to Lionsgate, "I am prostituting myself." But he added: "The
money has to come from somewhere." And, he said, that money would be poured
right back into an art project. In the process, his work is placed before an
audience of millions.
"I have a lot of trouble as an artist getting people to either look at my
work or know my name," said Mr. Kessell, who generally finds that his pictures
repel as much as they fascinate, much like the horror genre. "I'm interested in
what makes us human," he said, "what makes our sex drive and the drive to
violence the way they are. And what happens at the other end when we die."
Bill Sienkiewicz, an illustrator, writer and director who has worked on movie
posters for more than 20 years, said the tide was turning toward more
provocative designs. "If there are any floating heads, it will have to be a
decapitation," he said by telephone from his studio in Stamford, Conn., where he
was working on a poster for the horror movie "Evil Aliens."
Mr. Sienkiewicz, whose work has included posters for Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" and "The Green Mile" starring Tom Hanks, pointed out that some classic posters, like
the one for Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now," found a more artful way to use
actors' faces.
"It had headshots," Mr. Sienkiewicz said of the "Apocalypse" poster. "But it
also had the ambience and the heat of the jungle, and the levels of desperation.
There was lots of information in the poster that set the tone. You don't see
that today."
Universal Pictures' president for marketing, Adam Fogelson, agrees that a
saturated marketplace has forced everyone to think differently about poster ad
campaigns.
"I would say that there is a mistake in equating artistic with distinct," he
said, citing Lionsgate's creative use of two strategically hacked-off fingers to
sell its "Saw" sequel as a good example of an approach that managed to do both.
"Making something different or artistic for its own sake is not the answer I
advocate. I am not in the business of creating art, I am

[MOPO] A Talented and Familiar Character Actor Passes Away

2005-11-25 Thread Flixspix

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 25) - Actor Pat Morita, whose portrayal
of the wise and dry-witted Mr. Miyagi in "The Karate Kid" earned him an Oscar
nomination, has died. He was 73.
Morita died Thursday at his home in Las Vegas of natural
causes, said his wife of 12 years, Evelyn. She said in a statement that her
husband, who first rose to fame with a role on "Happy Days," had "dedicated his
entire life to acting and comedy."
In 1984, he appeared in the role that would define his
career and spawn countless affectionate imitations. As Kesuke Miyagi, the mentor
to Ralph Macchio's "Daniel-san," he taught karate while trying to catch flies
with chopsticks and offering such advice as "wax on, wax off" to guide Daniel
through chores to improve his skills.
Morita said in a 1986 interview with The Associated Press
he was billed as Noriyuki "Pat" Morita in the film because producer Jerry
Weintraub wanted him to sound more ethnic. He said he used the billing because
it was "the only name my parents gave me."
He lost the 1984 best supporting actor award to Haing S.
Ngor, who appeared in "The Killing Fields."
For years, Morita played small and sometimes demeaning
roles in such films as "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and TV series such as "The Odd
Couple" and "Green Acres." His first breakthrough came with "Happy Days," and he
followed with his own brief series, "Mr. T and Tina."
"The Karate Kid," led to three sequels, the last of which,
1994's "The Next Karate Kid," paired him with a young Hilary Swank.
Morita was prolific outside of the "Karate Kid" series as
well, appearing in "Honeymoon in Vegas," "Spy Hard," "Even Cowgirls Get the
Blues" and "The Center of the World." He also provided the voice for a character
in the Disney movie "Mulan" in 1998.
Born in northern California on June 28, 1932, the son of
migrant fruit pickers, Morita spent most of his early years in the hospital with
spinal tuberculosis. He later recovered only to be sent to a Japanese-American
internment camp in Arizona during World War II.
"One day I was an invalid," he recalled in a 1989 AP
interview. "The next day I was public enemy No. 1 being escorted to an
internment camp by an FBI agent wearing a piece."
After the war, Morita's family tried to repair their
finances by operating a Sacramento restaurant. It was there that Morita first
tried his comedy on patrons.
Because prospects for a Japanese-American standup comic
seemed poor, Morita found steady work in computers at Aerojet General. But at
age 30 he entered show business full time.
"Only in America could you get away with the kind of comedy
I did," he commented. "If I tried it in Japan before the war, it would have been
considered blasphemy, and I would have ended in leg irons. "
Morita is survived by his wife and three daughters

[MOPO] FS: HOLMES IN WASHINGTON DC I MARRIED A WITCH

HEY MOPO'ers.

Pleased to give you guys first pass
ontwo scarce one sheets from the early 40's -1943 and 1942 to be
exact

SHERLOCK HOLMES IN
WASHINGTON

 and

I MARRIED A WITCH

Both are consignments(different owners as well)so
I haven't wiggle room like usual but all offers considered. However with a
little evaluation Ithink you'll agree the asking prices arevery
fair AND INCLUDES SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE CONTINENTAL US AND A FLAT
$25 ABOAD.Holmes I have only seen offered twice in 5 years and this
is one of the two. Its how I first met the inimitable Claude Litton
who promptly emailed me after prevailing overan avalanche of
snipessome 4 or 5 years ago and congratulated me. A victory made
even more satisfying. And a gentleman whose memory I would caution anyone
to challenge, he can certainly attest that the asking price
including a de-mount and linenbacking by Poster Mountain is very, very
close to break even. Onesheet is in very fine condition,
displays even better, and has had minor touch ups to fold lines primarily where
vertical and horizontal folds meet at center half way down the poster
atthe center (or second)horizontal fold lineas well as the
thirdhorizontal fold line. This amounted to filling in at the cross
foldsthe diameter of an eraser on the end of a #2 pencil.

Veronica Lake has demonstrated
astonishing escalation in value with prices realized on titles as diverse
as Sullivan's Travels, The Glass Key, This Gun For Hire and The Blue
Dahlia. But I MARRIED A WITCH is truly in demand by virtue of Miss Lake
alone. This onesheet is in fine condition as is but I would
definitely have demounted and re-linenbacked for one reason, and
that is to brighten the paper. It has toning throughout then
againthat only serves to demonstrate just how vibrant the colors
are. imagine the overall leap in appearance with the power of
non-invasive scrubbing bubbles and whitening agents do their trick.
A onesheet sold at Heritage two weeks ago for $4200 AND IT WAS
TRIMMED one half inch on top and bottom measuring
27x40. All paper is present on this one offered with pin
holes in the corners, crudely filled in and touched up. The fold lines tight
with no enhancements. Poster for some is perfectly
acceptableas is.Butfor a couple of hundred dollars,
remounting would prove bewitching and still fall well below the price
ofthe trimmed1sht at Heritage

Sue,
Thanks for sharing. The steps and
frustration, the highs and the lows, are valuable when as FEMA

Re: [MOPO] Cinecon poster auction results?

2005-09-04 Thread Flixspix

Hollywood Poster Auction 2005

By chance I was interested in items in the first 50 lots and
then in the last 25. So I submitted bids on the site and timed appearing
in person for the last of auction. I will have to say there were
more people in attendance than I can recall from prior auctions. Morris
and his wife were in seemingly great spirits. Always the perfect hosts
with warm greetings and supremely efficient operations with regard to check in
and check out.

I am to understand Clara Bow's "IT" onesheet hit
$21,000.00 and I was present for the 1936 onesheet of
Katherine Hepburn's A WOMAN REBELS which I have NEVER heard of
until this auction but what a striking one sheet...itclosed at6
grand.

Otherwise this has always been an auction that initially has a
considerable amount of passes. But that doesn't necessarily reflect its
overall success, for the next day one has an opportunity to purchase
items passed at their reserve price and its amazing the amount of material that
moves. It makes sense. If by chance there were items you might
haveconsidered but held off from bidding as you had your eye on pieces
being offered later only to lose, monies budgeted can still do their
magic.

So today I am sure they were hopping, but fortunately I
nailed just about every piece I had my eyes on and went home last night
with a big smile.

Escaping Depression? Just Dance Blues Away
By JOHN ROCKWELL

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made 10 musicals together, from "Flying Down to Rio" in 1933, when they didn't yet get
star billing, to "The Barkleys of Broadway" in 1949, a full decade after
the ninth and a kind of coda to the rest.
At their peak, between 1935 and 1937, they were America's beloved couple.
Their musicals offered the purest form of escape from the woes of the
Depression, a fantasy of the 1920's seen through the darker prism of the 30's.
They provided the opportunity to commission and inspire the country's great
songwriters - Berlin, Kern, Gershwin. These films, these actors/singers/dancers,
have since also inspired a small library of critical commentary, of which Arlene
Croce's "Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Book," now lamentably out of print,
remains the classiest.
Still, any excuse to write about Astaire and Rogers is always welcome, and
Warner Home Video has provided a dandy excuse. In Volume 1 of the "Astaire
Rogers Collection," we have five DVD's of five Astaire-Rogers movies. Since
there are five more, and this is billed as Volume 1, we can safely assume a
Volume 2 is in the works, though Warner Brothers coyly won't confirm that.
Still, these DVD's, in their crisp, vivid transfers with sometimes
illuminating, sometimes tedious extras, include three of the films generally
considered to be the best of their best: "Top Hat" (1935), "Swing Time" (1936) and "Shall We Dance" (1937), along with "Follow the Fleet" (1936). "Fleet" has its
improbabilities (Astaire as a gum-chewing swab), but also "Let's Face the Music
and Dance," which floats blissfully free of the plot and may count as their
greatest self-contained dance drama. The Warner set is rounded out by "The
Barkleys of Broadway," their only one in color and their only one not for RKO,
in which the magic is pretty much gone but which is still full of craft and
nostalgia and a plausibly witty mirroring of the popular image of their
collaboration (onstage harmony, backstage dissonance).
What made the Astaire-Rogers team great was talent, synergy and context.
Rogers was already a budding movie star when Astaire did his first film in 1933.
But he was long-established in vaudeville and on Broadway. When the
Astaire-Rogers collaboration took off, Astaire and his dance master, Hermes Pan,
laboriously worked out the dance numbers for the next film while Rogers was off
making something else. Then Pan taught Rogers the moves, Astaire and Rogers
danced, and America swooned.
Astaire's sister, Adele, was widely considered his "best" partner, before her
retirement into marriage, but Rogers clicked with the broader public through
film, a simultaneously intimate and populist medium. It has been widely,
endlessly repeated that, in terms of their images, Astaire brought her class and
she brought him sex. She also brought him emotion and romance. Astaire was never
an actor with a wide range; he looked like the Joker in "Batman" and always played the dapper sophisticate,
nervously skimming the surface of feeling.
Rogers, in turn, was never a classic screen beauty. But she glowed in the
best of these Astaire-Rogers films. Partly that has to do with a seemingly
unstoppable parade of gorgeous costumes, like those (ostrich? chicken?) feathers
in "Cheek to Cheek." But her glow had even more to do with their chemistry.
She could act; some of her reaction shots are really moving. But together, in
their dancing (and his singing, thin-voiced but consummately stylish), they made
a new kind of acting - dancing that was acting all by itself. Their dancing
(meaning his choreography and their execution of it) was formal and reserved,
like him. It was ballroom dancing mixed with swing and jazz and tap. But though
some of the virtuosity remains remarkable, it was never vulgar and flashy like
ballroom dancing today, at least as epitomized by reality TV shows like "Dancing
With the Stars."
The mid-30's was the era, after all, in which the Motion Picture Production
Code had cracked down, to the point of prudery, on the more salacious excesses
of Hollywood in the 20's and early 30's. There was never anything covert in the
sexual play of Astaire and Rogers. Their dancing together was sex; it was
romance. "Of course, Ginger was able to accomplish sex through dance," Astaire
once said. "We told more through our movements instead of the big clinch. We did
it all in dance."
For me, the magic in their relationship had as much or more to do with the
lead-ins as with the dance itself; more with foreplay than consummation. Often
the song itself, sung by one or the other or both, precedes the dance, as in
"Cheek to Cheek" from "Top Hat." In "Let's Face

[MOPO] LINEN BACKING VS PAPER BACKING

2005-05-30 Thread Flixspix

JR,
A fine article
thanks. However you failed to address a significant practical stand
point. Paper backing a half sheet, insert, or window
cardindeed if done by a qualified studio or individual does indeed allow
for the piece to be exhibited at its most optimum. However it is a rather
fragile, acid-free hybrid you are left with. I am sure all of
you have experienced that sick-in-your-stomach catastrophe when a
paper backed piece literally cracks in your hands if handled brusquely or
inadvertantly bending, dropping, framing orclosing a dooror hatch
back on it. Literally its a fracture of the underlying cardboard
supporting the layer of original paper being restored. This becomes quite
an issue when having to ship a paper backed piece some distance. I
have found it takes with respect to packing, no less than 6 sheets of cardboard
to assure near gorilla- proof conditions for shipping.
Conjointly, shipping expenses are higher due to dimensional weight
over actual weight and now every shipper evaluates both costs and op for the
higher price.

Now chances are a linen backed half
sheet or insert really can't be shipped rolled into a tube due to
itsinflexibility in reducing to a 4 inch column. But the potential
for damage is greatly reduced during shipping as linen can withstand
a variety of stresses that is absolutely catastrophic if paper backed.
Visualize what is required to ship a linen placemat versus a sheet of
matzo the same sizeand you will understand my point. Many
dealers have gone to the additional expense of precutting masonite to ship
paper backed pieces. Trueposter will likely arrive intactbut
due tothe significantweight of masonite as well asits price...
costof shippingitem sky rockets by virtually
triple.

So who made the rules?
Restoration studios? Possibly, because it is considerably more
expensive topaper back a half sheet or insert than it is to linen
back. But once framed I defy anyone to be able to tell the
difference. Possibly its paper versus card stock, andpaper
backing was deemed to be the avenue of restoration for cardstock. BUT IS
THEIR ANY FACT BEHIND THOSE DECLARATIONS? I have seen and own
numeroushalf sheets and inserts on linen and in my opinion there isn't
enough perceived value of a paper backed item over the same piece on
linen.Of course if Iowned a restoration studio I am sure
I could come up with a list. But as a consumer and seller, in the all
out pursuit of keeping expenses down, I would love to see a move to
all linen all the timeonly when necessary.

[MOPO] Well You Can't Argue With Success, Gentleman Chan

2005-05-20 Thread Flixspix

Claude, and Mopo,
Timing is everything and Michael
(as do others) posted a 3 hour countdown. This actually works well for me
as I rarely place bids with 5 or 6 days out and I never know what clients
needs are from one day to the next. Well, I logged onto
the computer with about 2 hours left in his auction after reading his
posting. So I checked it out and low I found three great sci-fi posters
allat that timeshowing$150 - $170 in bid totals that I
could certainly haveused and placed bids of $135 - $175 more than were
showing knowing I couldn't stick around when they closed for a snipe, and I was
comfortable with where the net totals would be if I won them at max
bid.

ILOST all threeone only
by two dollars the others by at least ahundred more. I can't
state categorically thatMichael'sadmirable escalation of
prices overallwere due to the three hours left posting.but I CAN
say that was the case for three of them.

MOPO is here to educate, notify of
skank ebayers, talk film posters, and hopefully stimulate poster sales.
Success comes in all manner of utilization. Spurring impromptu bidding was
Michael's strategy and hell he got three from me. Who knows, he
could have had an even cheaper Charlie Chan In Honolulu!!! It would have
only taken a second to click and check.

Respectfully
freeman

2005-04-27 Thread Flixspix

Okay ignoring Bruce as an issue any issue,
how or where Gary is it determined that this particular piece is a
repro? I say that because I happened to have overseen the marketing
at The CINEMA III in NYC located in the basement of The Plaza which in its
finalthree years where in fact itmade more money renting to the
Plaza for meeting space than the films playing. But in its day when indeed
specialized films played exclusively in one house for all of
Manhattan. independents and at times some of the larger studios
would create special runs of posters just for that market. Their
primary use, wild-posting.
Barbet Schroeder's trippy, excursion
to Papau New Guinea with lots of pig clubbing (that's all I remember save for
the bursts of laughter speckled through out audience at times
uncontrollable,no doubt due tothe shrooms mixed in with their Snow
Caps) opened in latespring of I thought '72 some have it
as '77 anyway I have never heard this poster questioned especially in view
of the fact it was printed.

I still have several examples of
onesheets that actually measure 27 x 43 or 44 where along top or
bottom Coming Soon To The Baronet/Coronet, (Mommie Dearest) or
ZIEGFELD (Barry Lyndon). To make the special printings
affordable, it was actually more cost effective to print up a set standard
amount which was I believe 1500 or 2500 so obviously hundreds could be
left over.Case in point, while in DC and working for Circle
Theatres and Circle Films.who were also the major partners behind
CINEMA 5years earlier,I threw out at least 800 onesheets
for THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, and hundreds of SEVEN BEAUTIES,
JABBERWOCKY, GREASER'S PALACE AND f*ck merunning whoknew.. the
black versions ofGIMME SHELTER. All had theatre ID's so not
much use in sending anywhere else unless out of standard posters and we
needed the closet space..o the horror.

Re: [MOPO] A VERY BIG DEATH IN HOLLYWOOD

2005-04-14 Thread Flixspix

If you ask me, Kerkorian was the Kervorkian
of MGM.the only difference beinghe didn'tbother to
ask

The Lion That Will Roar No MoreBy DAVID THOMSON

an Francisco
IT was a long time ago, but there are many who still remember that Stanley
Donen (who was 81 yesterday) did "Singin' in the Rain"; that Cyd Charisse made
X's and O's with her long legs in that film, as well as in "Brigadoon," "Party
Girl" and "Silk Stockings"; that Elizabeth Taylor gave her violet eyes and her
black hair for Technicolor tests; and that there were other stars like Debbie
Reynolds, Margaret O'Brien (who smashed the snowmen even after Judy Garland had
sung "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"), and many more, not forgetting
the Mick, Mr. Rooney - hail to thee, blithe spirit - who ran the gamut from Puck
in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to "Baby Face Nelson."
I know, those last two films were not thought of by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, but
nobody's perfect, and Mickey Rooney was the all-American boy at his home studio,
which effectively went out of the movie business last week with its purchase by
Sony and a group of other investors for nearly $5 billion.
The death of this institution, of MGM, has been announced many times over the
course of its 81-year history. In 1936, when the boy wonder, Irving Thalberg,
died, there were those who said it would never be the same. But it pretty much
was, for good and ill. Thalberg loved Lon Chaney and Norma Shearer; he
encouraged the Marx Brothers but he put songs in their pictures, just as he cut
about four-fifths of "Greed," Erich von Stroheim's wildly ambitious 10-hour
epic. Boy wonders are often boys who wonder what they can get away with. Then
Louis B. Mayer, Irving's father figure, boss and secret opponent, was fired in
1951, after being head of the West Coast operation since 1924, the highest
salaried man in the United States, a friend to presidents and the most heartfelt
and constant actor at the studio. What did that mean? That he reckoned he was
living in a movie all the time. He was, as they say, a man who drank his own
liquor and never noticed he was drunk.
For 20 years more or so, MGM seemed to be the old place. Hanging on, remaking
a great hit from the past, "Ben-Hur," redoing "The Philadelphia Story" as "High
Society," and having the lion's head on "Doctor Zhivago," "2001: A Space
Odyssey" and "Zabriskie Point." But in 1969, the financier Kirk Kerkorian bought
the studio. Eventually he would plaster the three great initials on an emerald
bunker in Las Vegas. He cut back on movie production. He organized a sale of
studio properties - just little things like Dorothy's red slippers, nothing to
break your heart - and he is said to have burned a great volume of papers (the
history of our story) to make space.
By 1985, Mr. Kerkorian owned both MGM and United Artists, and Ted Turner
subsequently bought the package from him so that he could own the thing he maybe
loved most in the world, "Gone With the Wind," and so that he could obtain the
video rights to the Metro library. Having been stripped of those assets, the
diminishing, ever more tattered property went back to Mr. Kerkorian. Giancarlo
Parretti was the next owner, and then in 1993 Sony bought the Culver City
property, which meant the soundstages, the Thalberg building, the Grecian
colonnade on Washington Boulevard and all the sentiment there was left.
Three years later, the dogged Mr. Kerkorian came back as his own sequel,
older and with fewer ideas on every return. Now at last the whole thing belongs
to some investment companies and Sony. To help pay for the purchase, the staff
will shrink from 1,500 to 200. Nothing will be left except for a few people to
run a small library, and the memories of people like the Mick. As studios become
libraries, and film turns to digital, so the movies - the great things we made
once - seem doomed to become miniaturized experiences, with outtakes, variant
endings and directors remembering how smart they were.
It's not that MGM was the best studio, though it did better financially than
most. It was not always as daring as Warner Brothers, Paramount or RKO. It liked
to project a very safe, conservative view of the American imagination. And it
could cheat: though it claimed "Gone With the Wind" as an MGM film, that
monstrous thing owed itself to the obsession of David O. Selznick, who had every
reason to keep away from Mayer (the man was also his father-in-law). Creative
obsession was not really Metro's thing, and the studio picked up "Wind,"
finally, only out of Selznick's madness and a stealthy set of deals made by Mr.
Selznick's former wife (and Mayer's daughter). It was a family business, then
reason enough not to get too sentimental over it.
On the other hand, it is the studio where King Vidor directed Garland singing
"Over the Rainbow" and later, when idiots thought the song too sad, Mayer said,

[MOPO] KING KONG IS NOT SO BAD ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW HIM

2005-03-31 Thread Flixspix

Hey Mopo-aficionados,
freeman here.

In my 5 years of selling movie
posters, the biz has been at its most rewarding meeting new people of all
backgrounds, but with that single bug first and foremost, the love
of vintage movie posters and ephemera. Ephemera? Well
little did I know just how diverse and reachingthat little sub-heading
could encompass (e.g. Hey Marty! Greatvintage slides this
week).

But it was only recently did I know
just how big and tall ephemera could be asand in this cases how strange it
can sometime be in acquiring. Interested? Keep reading
...

A close friend of mine has a
penchant for horror and sci-fi and has for years enjoyed
collecting one of everything especially pre-1945. But when it came to the
1933 version of KINGKONG with its astoundingtechnical
achievements by his hero,Willis O'Brien, wellnow we would be
approaching religion. He has held in his hand the fully
articulated Ape, helped restore the stegasauraus to its
ready for close-up glory.and in his own lair Kong press book,
stills.lobbies,vintage model kits,never mind authentic
props usedby the natives andeven a scream by Fay Wray sealed
inside a mason jar.

So there it was, a one of a kind 10 foot die-cut
standee, made from almost a double six sheet printing where paper was to be
mounted on a board 10 foot by 4 foot and then cut along Kong's outline. ectly
mounted on archival material, supported from behind with metal rods emanating
from a center metal spine for consummate stability.

So was it really any wonder that
only into its first daymy friend depresses BIN, and then immediately
called me to drop the bomb. Well understandably I was quite in
shockfor earlier in the day we spent 15 minutes discussing the
scantmeritsof an additional $100 on a consignment item of
his.Now in stark contrast consider the number ofzeros on the
BIN... well, suffice to sayifI ever attempted
to enter a bid with that queue of zeros, such an
actionwould automatically cause my computer to crash and my mouse to
conk me on the head.

 "Whose the seller?" My friend
replied "Matt Shapiro" At that moment the sound of horses braying in
the distance pierced the late night silence. "You know", I replied,
"Isn't he dead?"

Jump to 5 days later, we still don't
know if he is alive or dead. But the attorney is very alive and well.
Lawyer we never meet. But we are meeting a lovely girlfriend with a
predisposition to look with eyes glazedalmost tearfulwhenever asked
about the legendaryShapiro with words to accompany like "its
so sad". Whatever.

Instead of delivering this 10 foot tall
glorious ephemera, to my friends house, it seems it is to be
"presented" first. where then it can be inspected (this is the
partmy assistance is requested, well, me and my trusty portable
hand held black light to sniff out if any in-painting or replaced paper
and the like which I am glad to report only the most minimum contrary to
rumour). Location selected by seller's "grieving" life partner is a
non-equity actors theatre in the valley a rocks throw from the Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences. Upon agreement that standee is as
described, bank is call and wire transfer is initiated and no less than 6
pages of documents are signed and co-signed presented by both parties.

Well walking in to the theatre, KAPOW there it is
all 10 feet of animal fury balanced atop the EmpireState Building cradling
Fay Rayin one arm andin the other with raised fist acrumple
bi-plane bathed in a flood of lighting both heavenly and forensic.
Whipping out my big 3 inches of black light I begin to pour over every square
inch of stone litho paper. But then the grieving lovely asks,
"Do you mind if I video tape this?" "Well
okay, but how did you come by this theatre?" "Oh I am an
actress"My head is bursting.. BINGO
tears on a dime!!!

Anyway the rest is they sayishistory...in
fact this piece is in Profiles In History solely to sate a curiosity if
its appeal is heightened by Peter Jackson's pending blockbuster. I have a
hunch there won't be a sad face on my friendif it doesn't meet its
modest reserve. But its a spectacular piece and if by chance someone
places an informed and successful bid, he or she will be in such a
delirious state of mind for they will be shipping home a truly
grand, glorious and near mintpiece of Classic One-Of-A-Kind Hollywood
that literally earns the moniker as THE EIGHTH WONDER OF YOUR LIVING
ROOM.
