[neonixie-l] What type of tubing / valves are used in vacuum and de-gassing, gas population experiments?

2023-08-28 Thread Miles Thatch

I'm looking to experiment with making a cold cathode character display. I
have plenty of experience experimenting with manufactured IN-12 tubes and
the power supplies that drive these, but I want to step further to
experiment in making my own.

What grade of materials / tubing / valves should I be looking at to try and
build my own jig for evacuating air from a tube and populating a gas?

I don't suppose just about any valve with do (like liquid control valve)
and looking at my hobbyist grade vacuum chamber, the tubing contains a
spooled wire on the inside to provide rigidity to counter the vacuum forces.

Would brass / copper tubing sealed with aluminum weld be suitable?

RE: [neonixie-l] What is this tube ?

2023-02-12 Thread Tidak Ada
They are NO magic eyes, but VFD display’s like every other VFD 7-segment
display the indication is by steps every dot (or triangle) is on or off

The Russians also had things like this, but with round dots and about the
length of a IN9.

Remarkable is the “zero” level display with up-down indication. I only saw
such with LED’s. Red triangles and a green line in the middle to tell level
zero just for FM discriminator tuning ‘zero level’.

[neonixie-l] What will happen if current slightly below specification in long time?

2023-01-14 Thread overdoingism Lab.
My nixie clock has a switch, with three level, full - low - off.

The low level setting does make the tube look a bit dimmer.

And the current seems to be slightly below specification.

For all I know, it's probably not good for "Cathode Poison", but I can
switch back to full level to flush them.

Besides, is there any disadvantage?

BTW, Is there any way to adjust the brightness? PWM doesn't seem like a
good idea.

[neonixie-l] what is that CRT-like tube?

2022-06-03 Thread Marcin Adamski

Hi Guys,

this CRT-style was recently sold on Ebay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/115400617434 (I was not the seller nor the
buyer). I have never seen anything like this before. It seems to have 3
separate guns (RGB?) but the number of pins in the base suggests almost
no control over the beams. And what is the wine bottle style topend? I
am totally bamboozled.

Cheers,
Marcin

I have two types here - CK1414-07 (Brimar) & CK1414F10C (Raytheon) -

Some larger users had custom masks made for specific applications

Correct, you cannot. You need to drive the Monoscope like a CRT, with a
raster, then read off the output and drive something else with similar
raster deflections.

Actual terminals (e.g. Conrac) were built with this chargen, there are

[neonixie-l] What is a fair price for IN-14's nowadays?

2021-06-30 Thread ZY
I bought maybe 30-40 IN-14s a while back when they were going for a used
price of $2-2.5 per tube after including shipping.

I finally used up most of my stash building clocks for family and friends
and I wanted to get a few more, but wow the prices have ballooned. The
exact ebay listing I used for a lot of 6 a few years ago went from $20 to
$100 from the same seller!

I haven't been in the buying business often enough to know if this is a
price wave that will eventually subside, or because of rising popularity
and limited stock the prices will only go up.

I'm wondering what should be a fair price for IN-14s now? I'm seeing maybe
$15 per used tube? Am I just looking at the wrong places or is eBay still
an ok place?

[neonixie-l] What Type of Booster DC-DC is this one?

2020-07-11 Thread MrThe50sanchez
Hello !

I was making a little bit of research and found this type of booster
converter.

What can you tell me about this one? I wan't to know how it works.

I nearly understand how flyback boosters converters works and LT1308
devices, but:

-Does here the mosfet make the switching mode for the inductor (wich makes
the pick voltage) and the Capacitor stores the high voltage and them It
supplies it to the nixie tube?
-What's the mission of the pic here?, It give`s an OUTPUT voltage when and
fisical switch is press (when is added to the pic)?

Thanks a lot.

I got a similar one, it will light up one digit on a nixie tube. also
give you an RF burn if you get your finger too close. Good for a 1 cm

I carry one of those cheap "ARC" cigarette lighters to test any tubes I
find at hamfests. And to burn random things (mostly my eyeballs from the
raw UV). because I don't smoke.

Nixes are scarce at hamfests, but you do spot the occasional one hiding
in some old piece of test gear or a scrap PCB assembly.

The one marked TD71 is an OTIS Touch Tube used in elevators. It is a touch
sensitive trigger tube. They are also named 425A5 or 2040. They are similar to
the RCA 1C22.

The 71 in TD71 is probably the voltage drop when triggered. You had to replace
tubes with the same voltage drop to get the circuit to work properly. I’ve seen
voltages from 69 to 74 stamped on these.

The other tube looks like a Geiger tube.

Subject: [neonixie-l] What do you guys think of my homemade Nixiewatch?

Hi guys,

The last year or so I was doing a hobby project of a nixiewatch. I was
wondering what you guys think of it.

I got inspired for the case by Craig Smith from this post:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/neonixie-l/RINs0RbaYB8

It features:

- Two small nixie tubes of type z5900m.

- Accurate real time clock.

- Calculations showed that 350 hours standby time was easily achievable.

- Bluetooth for controlling settings and setting the time of the watch as well
as seeing the battery status.
- Some Bluetooth settings include: Animation On/Off, Manual or accelerometer
triggering of tubes, background led On/Off. Programmable button for seeing
temperature of battery percentage.

- Accelerometer for triggering the tubes when wrist is turned

- 300 mAh battery.

- Powerfull microcontroller.

- Ultra low power microcontroller.

- RGB led for multiple purposes.

- Battery gas gauge IC for accurately monitoring the battery state.

- micro USB for charging the battery.

- One multi direction button for triggering, Bluetooth connection and a
programmable button for temperature reading or battery status.

- CNC milled housing from Aluminum.

- Plexiglass window for protection

- Bluetooth phone application.

- Optional time synchronization via WiFi.

- Optional Vibration motor to indicate smartphone notifications like Whatsapp,
Facebook, Snapchat, SMS...

Indeedwe felt the latest quake centered outside of LAbit of a

that much time organizing, the last thing you want is mother nature putting
a couple thousand components, screws and nuts all over the place!

Re: [neonixie-l] What if....

2019-07-07 Thread Matthew
Magnificent!

The only time that I use a cover over the tubes is to protect the red coating
from possible damage due to cleaning or being out in
the open.  If the tubes are just glass, then I omit the cover and just dust off
the tubes when they get dusty.  Although, if the red
coating is "easily" replaceable, then having a cover is completely unnecessary.

I prefer Dalibor's colon tubes.  They are probably (I do not have one yet) a
better match, and probably last longer than the tiny
neon bulbs used with other clocks.  I noticed significant blackening on the
tiny neon tubes that I run.

Dalibor wrote about developing a red filter on 10/12/2017, but had brightness
issues.  I wonder if Nicholas' filter solves that problem.

Great idea, looking forward to seeing all your workshops! I have finally
been able to set up a small workbench in my student's dorm as well. The
problem is that I cannot bold anything to the walls, so I have to be
creative. I am still starting out, but this is what I have so far.

Here's my little corner of the house:
Tektronix 100 MHz scope with built-in freq counter and VM
Lambda dual power supply (80s vintage)
Heathkit 2.5 VOM (70s)
Fluke auto-ranging VOM

Of course the scope doubles as a clock - 1965 GE Telechron clock in
the background- extremely accurate too

The software just runs on an Arduino (or maybe Wemos) and you attach a probe to
the pin on the Arduino. There is no PCB involved, but as I said, the results
aren’t great.

Hi Paul,
This instrument is an odd counter and programmable timer. If you look
close you’ll need the dials yo pick your time interval. I am not a
programmer at all. I did in college but that was long ago.

If I were to modify it wouldn’t I have to cut circuitry? There’s a pic of
the TTL in sockets.

What do you think?

Re: [neonixie-l] What is this connector called?

2018-09-27 Thread Nick
For lower-speed use cases, i.e. < 50MHz, I solder these to a ribbon cable
which is then terminated in an IDC connector. I intersperse GND and signal
lines.

I then have a similar connector (opposite gender) going to the logic
analyser.

Big plus is that I can disconnect a DUT easily, i.e. have several on the go
at once.

I got the idea from the Digilent Analog Discovery 2 and DIgital DIscovery
which has similar probe s

Re: [neonixie-l] What is this connector called?

2018-09-27 Thread gregebert
I've seen 2 types of grabbers

   - Cheaper ones that are a simple 'J' shape to reach around a pin. They
work fairly well with 0.1" pitch devices. I got a bunch of these with an
   HP Logic Analyzer.
   - Similar to the picture above, almost like a pair of arms that hug the
pin. With some patience, you can grab onto 0.05" pitch devices. They
hold-on very well and once they are secured they wont short against
   adjacent pins.

The only drawback is that these grabbers require a jumper-wire to be
connected, and they pop-off easily.

[neonixie-l] What is this connector called?

2018-09-26 Thread jb-electronics

Hello friends,

I am currently setting up a new way of photographing Nixie tubes which
will hopefully result in better quality pictures. To that end, I am also
considering using different connectors to the Nixie tube pins. I was
thinking about these:

P5003 10Pcs Mini IC Test Hook Clip Jumper Probe Logic Analyzer Testing
Accessories - Measurement & Analysis Instruments Digital Multimeters &
Oscilloscopes - 10 x P5003 10Pcs Mini Grabber SMD

https://www.amazon.com/P5003-Jumper-Analyzer-Testing-Accessories/dp/B07FQLHTBM/

I have no idea what they are called in technical terms, and the Amazon
listing is also kind of vague. I am asking since I want to purchase
these at Digikey or Mouser along with a bunch of other components, but
it is hard to look for these without having the proper term.

Can anybody help? It is greatly appreciated!

Best wishes

[neonixie-l] What soviet-era equipment used IN-18's ?

2018-09-19 Thread Thomas Kummer
Please take this with a grain of salt as this is purely speculation. I
believe they were intended to be used in airports, sporting events, and any
place where a large number of people would be looking at them from a far.
However, I think that very few of them ever saw much use, as most of the ones
on eBay are NOS, or used by a hobbyist. Often times, when a government
completely controls the means of production, they don’t always produce
necessary goods. Often, they will produce goods just to keep people employed,
to help them stay in power. Basically, there could be absolutely no demand for
a product, yet it is being made like they can’t meet the demand. Which,
honestly is good for us hobbyists now, but not so good for the citizens of that
time. Again, this is purely speculation, but it would explain why you find so
many more NOS Russian tubes compared to NOS tubes from NATO countries. That and
the fact that Russia was late to develop VFDs and LEDs.

[neonixie-l] What ever became of the RCA mystery tube?

2017-11-15 Thread jb-electronics

Hi folks,

I was just going through some old files and I found these two pictures
of an old Ebay listing for some sort of RCA (?) indicator lab sample:

Does anybody have more information about this? I am not even sure what
kind of device we are dealing with. Judging from the coated wires it is
probably gas-filled, making this a gas discharge display. In 2011, after
it was discovered on Ebay, it was conjectured that Giorgio Basile won
the auction, see his magnificent website here:
http://www.lampes-et-tubes.info/index-e.htm . Unfortunately, it is not
listed there. So I am wondering: does anyone around here have pictures
of this wonderfully interesting tube in action?

I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Cheers
Jens
