Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: First new to me 750

2018-11-07 Thread Dustin Anderson
Again, I do not know a lot about carbs, but maybe the carbs are out of
sync? Below 6500 rpms the difference in vacuum timing doesn't effect much,
but once the engine starts pulling harder, the difference causes the timing
of the spark plug firing and the cylinder getting fuel is off? There are
two syncs that you do, a mechanical and a vacuum. There are a couple of
videos on youtube and probably several people here that can actually
explain the procedure. When you look at the spark plugs, that will let you
know more of what is going on inside the cylinder.

And also check out the air filter. Could be running rich at higher rpms
because the air filter is too dirty to allow enough air into the carb. I
don''t know alot about carbs, but it seems to make sense that the engine
could start running rich at higher rpms, which could flood the engine.
Again though, I have not messed with carbs alot yet.

Keep the spark plugs and do the thing where you run he motorcycle fifty
miles, then take the new ones out, and then compare them to the old ones.
Google spark plug chart and you can see kind of what is happening inside
the combustion chamber.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: First new to me 750

2018-11-04 Thread Dustin Anderson
Grab some Yamalube Ring Free Plus Fuel Additive and put a cap full in at
every refuel. I have been using that and prayers in my 1984 CB700sc that
only had 18,000 miles on it when I got it. It runs pretty good two years
later and I haven't yet had to rebuild and resync the carbs yet. I know it
is coming, but hopefully I will have another motorcycle to commute with by
then and can rebuild the carbs at an easy pace. Maybe you too will get
fortunate results. I don't know what time of cam chain tensioner you have,
but grab another valve cover gasket and check to make sure your timing is
correct. It is unnecessary, but relatively easy to get to and gives you
peace of mind.

As far as the battery goes, use bikebandit, partszilla or babbitts honda to
find the Honda part number for the motorcycle, then go from there.
Copy/Paste is your friend.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Stuck front brake caliper piston -1983 Nighthawk 650

2018-11-04 Thread Dustin Anderson
First get a service manual if you haven't done this stuff before. Check out
Babbitts honda, they are sometimes cheaper than other places for OEM parts.
As far as kits go, there are a couple of companies that make brake caliper
rebuild kits, just type in the make model of the motorcycle and brake
caliper rebuild kit into the google. And being you are going to be down
there, you might as well do both so that you know the braking system will
be wearing at the same rate. If you can afford it, go with OEM if you can,
just my personal opinion but I am not a mechanic or technician. Taking
everything apart and putting it back together isn't that hard, it is the
cleaning of everything that actually takes the most time. YOU CAN DO IT!
YOU CAN DO IT ALL NIGHT LONG!

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Adventure tires for NH750

2018-11-04 Thread Dustin Anderson
As long as you match the rim size and tire dimensions(110/90 or whatever
your stock tire size is) It should be fine. Just go for quality and and be
realistic how aggressive you want the tires to be for the dirt. Metzeler
makes a more aggressive tire in the Karoo 3
, then
Continental has the TKC 70
, and then
there is the Bridgestone Battle Wing BW501/502
,

which a less aggressive dirt tire. I am using revzilla just becuase, find
the best deal for the best tire wherever you can. The motorcycle can
definitely make it. Hope you go and have a good time.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Starter Brushes keep burning out.

2018-11-04 Thread Dustin Anderson
Real quick, just in case somebody else is having the same problem in the
future. I think it is the quality of the materials used in my aftermarket
kit. I am not using Honda OEM brushes. I rebuilt the starter, I didn't
replace the brass bushings just the starter brushes and o-rings, the
bearing and seal was still good. After I got everything back together, I
started the motorcycle and it started wonderfully. I then remembered that I
didn't but the shims back in the brush housing(?), cussed a bit then took
the cap off and put the shims back in, thin/thick/thin. I took a look at
the brushes and after one start they were already flaking apart and there
were little chunks of the brushes in the cap, after one start. So I think I
am going to maybe start the motorcycle first thing in the morning then push
start it till I am done with the day and order some Honda brushes. I also
think that is why the starter housing started getting so gouged up.
Hopefully I dont screw my commutator up until I get the Honda OEM brushes.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Starter Brushes keep burning out.

2018-10-22 Thread Dustin Anderson
I keep having to replace the starter brushes on the Mitsiba SM-8 starter.
Other than me using it as my sole form of transportation, are there any
reasons why the brushes would keep burning out? Is it spinning while the
engine is running?

[Nighthawk Lovers] Cam chain tensioner on a 1984 CB700SC

2018-08-21 Thread Dustin Anderson
As I was removing the old spring from the tensioner, the rubber boot
started flaking apart. I did not order this part with the spring. Is it
necessary for the cam chain tensioner assembly? Could I just put on a large
heat shrink wrap?

But there is oil on the bottom of slave cylinder and the bottom of the

those?

[Nighthawk Lovers] Engine oil leaking from Clutch Slave Cylinder on CB700sc

2018-08-11 Thread Dustin Anderson
So I had the same issue with oil leaking out of the clutch slave cylinder
last year. I rebuilt the clutch slave cylinder and replaced the pushrod
seal inside of the output gear case. Noticed wear grooves on the pushrod
likely from it spinning. Everything stopped leaking as badly. Still was a
leak out of the oil pressure sensor and I replaced that. Now there is
another leak, below the clutch slave cylinder, and to the rear of the oil
pressure sensor, and I think it is again coming from the pushrod seal in
the output gear case. Is the bearing out that keeps the pushrod from
spinning, and then the spinning pushrod wears out the oil seal? Or is all
the leaking a sign that the piston rings are gone and so the pressure from
the cylinder is pushing down past the rings and into the crankcase? I am
ordering the parts that I think will fix the issue, but I was looking for
any advice.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Valve Cover Gasket

2018-04-14 Thread Dustin Anderson
I have found the Versa gasket kits, but am only needing the valve cover
gasket, part number 12391-mj0-000. All the online part sites show the part
unavailable. I also need to replace the handle bars because I went moto
camping and hit some clay mud at the campsite parking space. That was great
at 10:00 at night. Are there any special procedures in replacing the
handlebars?

[Nighthawk Lovers] CB700sc Exhaust

2018-02-22 Thread Dustin Anderson
I am thinking about making or buying a 4 into 1 exhaust for a couple of
reasons, but mostly to lose some weight and make it easier to take the
exhaust on and off without a floor jack, four arms, and a can of enamel
spray paint to to paint the frame. Is it worth it, or should I just get
better at handling the stock exhaust?

[Nighthawk Lovers] CB700SC swingarm dust seals/oil seals

2017-11-10 Thread Dustin Anderson
I replaced a couple more gaskets and seals and noticed the swingarm has
packable bearings. But the oil seals can only be found in Norway or
something. None of the online partshouses have any. Are those seals
removable with messing them up?

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: 80's NH Brake feel

2017-10-18 Thread Dustin Anderson
Also, make sure you start with the caliper on caliper on the opposite side
of the master cylinder, then the other. I heard you could wrap a rag around
the lever and the grip and zip tie it after bleeding the brake lines which
also helps with brake response.

I got no idea dude, but I think that mid 80's dual disc brakes are just

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Questions about engine heat.

2017-10-18 Thread Dustin Anderson
I let it cool down and then started it and did the big horrible of revving
it, then shut it off and then tried to start it again and it cranked like
it used to before it waited for parts. Starter motor and clutch was
supposedly replaced before I bought it, which doesn't rule it out as being
the problem but thanks for the focus.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Questions about engine heat.

2017-10-18 Thread Dustin Anderson
I recently replaced the spark plugs, exhaust gaskets, rebuilt the clutch
slave, replaced the gear shifter cover gasket, gear shifter linkage seal,
oil pan gasket and the gear indicator seal. No leaks as of right now, but
the motor is having problems turning over after a short ride, due to the
engine being hot. I also noticed that the valve cover on the front, above
the headers is starting to leak and that the engine seems to be hotter. The
CB700 seems to be running better than it did before, but when I stop it
seems to be wanting to not turn over. My question is how does one know if
the exhaust gaskets are sealing properly? Is it just my two year mark on
the battery and time to replace it?
