A few comments.
Image the laptop and run the image from an image file on the external hard
drive. This should leave room on the external drive for either an install
of your virtual machine software or the installer for your virtual machine

AFAIK Mandriva Flash is

The 7200 will give you a bit of a performance boost, as far as
saving/retrieving/opening files. Tradeoff is a bit shorter battery life
since the drive has to spin up longer than a 5400.

I use a Dell Latitude D630 (at the moment), on which I have been running
Ubuntu 8.10. I recently decided to play around and install the new
release of SimplyMepis. It had some show-stopper issues like no sound
after installing, was very weird and slow about opening links in a
powerpoint,
On the note of where / what to buy if you are going to buy. I recommend
either Dell or HP as they have next day on site service contracts and that
is anywhere in the US and you can expand to cover the world too if necessary
(not sure where you are travelling) and that is definitely worth it. I
