On the note of where / what to buy if you are going to buy. I recommend either Dell or HP as they have next day on site service contracts and that is anywhere in the US and you can expand to cover the world too if necessary (not sure where you are travelling) and that is definitely worth it. I think lenovo and others have similar setups, but I am most familiar with Dell and HP. No experience running linux on these machines though.
