Sounds like you have it well in hand.  You might investigate VMWare and
Virtualbox to see if you can run the external HD as a VM as is.  I have not
been able to do it via VMWare (yet) but you can try it with Virtualbox.  If
it works, buy a cheap USB pen drive and put it on there, then (as a backup /
emergency measure) you can go to any laptop / desktop and plug in the pen
drive and the USB drive and be up and running without too much trouble.
