Mojca,

I a hopeless mac user at home now. I used to be pretty good with  
miktex, even working with hans to test the settings that now exist in  
the texexec.rme file, back in the days when we made that an .ini file  
in Miktex. But no longer.

It's our school machines I am trying to configure, PC's with Windows  
XP. I got to a point today where I selected the formats tab in the  
Miktex Settings gui, and tried to build cont-en there. It objected  
that it could not find cont-en.ini in tex/something or other so I  
tried moving cont-en.ini from the context distribution to tex/ 
something or other and updating the filename database to no avail.

I'll give your idea of no spaces a try tomorrow. Meanwhile if you can  
think of anything less drastic, as I have to do this on 20 different  
machines,

Hi,

Thanks for the pointers. It seems that the syntax-highlighter only
need supply "function buffers.visualizers.mp.flush_line_()", which
returns a buffer containing the typesetting commands. Will try playing
with it.

At the moment, I am looking for the feature with
\setuptyping[option=commands]. I saw "\mksetupcommandsintype" defined,
and "buffers.visualizers.enableescape = true" set in core-ver.mkiv,
but it isn't handled in the default visualizer.

Can you please try what happens if you install MikTeX in some folder
with no spaces in base path?

At the dos prompt:

$ texmfstart --help

Worked just fine. However,

$ texmfstart texexec --help

Or some such thing.

This combination worked OK before I updated:

(Mac OS X 10.4)

The latest ConTeXt beta with the same LuaTeX gives the same result as
you attached.

[NTG-context] relative file locations when compiling from different folders (in projects)

Hello,

I'm just wondering if there's some recipe about how to simplify the
work when icluding other files and images in projects, when one is
compiling from different folders.

For example:

articles/08/01/art-one.tex (product)
articles/08/01/art-two.tex (product)
articles/08/02/art-three.tex (product)
articles/08/02/art-four.tex (product)
articles/08/magazine_2008.tex (product)
components/funny.tex (component)
img/08/01/img-1.png
img/08/01/img-2.png
img/08/01/img-3.png
img/08/02/img-2.png
magazine_all.tex (project)
layout.tex (environment)

If I do
> cd articles/08/01
> texexec art-one
then images are expected to be set up as ../../../img/08/01 and if I
need to \input somefile from the project (like "funny.tex"), even if
that's a component, I need to provide some explicit location.

But then I would want to compile
> cd articles/08
> texexec magazine_2008
and then all relative paths break, even when specified in subfolders.
Now I would need to set up ../../img/08/01 as image directory. Even
though the article provides relative path, that path is now relative
to the document I compile one folder lower in hierarchy, not to the
document that defines the relative path (which is a bit weird, but I
understad why it is so).

Also ... is there some elegant way to include "funny.tex" from an
article, so that it will work both in article and magazine? (I'm
thinking about putting \def\projectroot{../../} at the top of files,
but that's a bit ugly.)

I can solve the problem in my own ways with some weird macros, like
the ones that set image directory to
"directory={../../../img/08/01,../../img/08/01,img/08/01}" at the top
of every article file, but my solutions are all a bit ugly. (Another
thing is that it needs to be flexible enough, so that I don't need to
change every single article in case that I decide to move images or
articles to another location in project.)

If some elegance exists to solve that, I would welcome any hints or
suggestions. But as I said: it's all solvable in one way or another,
so this is just a low-priority request for sharing your ideas. I'm
posting this because I would almost bet that there's some one-liner to
solve it all :) :) :)

or just code your documents in xml and then use context to make pdf and 
xslt to make html

there is a new beta with a few important changes

- partial rewrite of the tex-lua font definition interface (from now on 
font-ini is different for mkii and mkiv)

- adapted spacing (for french), taking care of penalty/space situations 
and such

for this beta you need the latest luatex as well because otherwise the 
font definition mechanism will not work (this means that the minimals 
also need to be updated)

You may try sending feature requests to the author of tex4ht. It has
some potential to work better than it currently does. But the general
answer is: there's no satisfying solution for tex->html. The other way
around is possible though.

Thanks for the pointer.  I played a bit with pdfluatex directly which
seems to work. (I'm not to the point of producing figures, because I
would have to rebuild all the functions that are located in mlib-run.lua
and the luatexref-t.tex does not give straightforward example of how the
mplib module should be used, it only describes the functions API. Btw:
could you add in the doc a simple example of how to set up an mplib instance
(loading the format file) and typesetting a minimal graphic, and then
use it from within plain TeX for instance; this is transparent to
conTeXt users since there are files like mlib-run.lua but not easy for
plain TeX users :P  And I'm not advocating the use of plain TeX,
I'm a converted conTeXt user since 2003, but this will help user
understand (a bit) how things work behind the scene.)

[NTG-context] ConTeXt to XML or HTML

Hello all,

I have been looking for a way to convert from ConTeXt to HTML. I asked
for God Google and also I have visited http://wiki.contextgarden.net,
and read many times almost all articles. Maybe, I have not undestood the
process very well. I could not figure out how to make such conversion
yet. I saw many different forms of converting XML to ConTeXt, but I did
not see nothing from typing in ConTeXt syntax and get a XML output file.
The only program I have noticed that do that is tex4ht. This programs
bases its conversion in both .tex and .dvi files. The result is not so
exact as the desired. Is there another way to do that?

If you begin to treat such exceptions, you'll never finish. Today you're
thinking of "!!!", tomorrow there will be "19:20" or "Hi!jab".
There are 2 main ideas:
- Don't put too many exceptions into ConTeXt, especially if there is no hope
  to treat them all automatically. When a text needs special constructions,
  put them in a macro, for example \ThreeExclamationMarks.
- For most "rules", the opinions diverge. Some people want a bit more
  kerning here or there, other people want less.

Think of the French LaTeX community: some want an inter-word space before a
punctuation sign, others want only a half space or even less. So don't be
too strict!

Not so hard. Almost everybody will agree with this minimal rule for French
punctuation:
- there has to be some nobreakspace before the punctuation signs :?!; and »
  and after «
- there is some default value for the amount of this space, that can be

maybe a mismatch between the binary and context (maybe the log file in 
the cache formats paths tells more)

a new cont-en-metafun.mem gets generated when

(1) it's not there
(2) the context version changed
(3) the metafun version changed

mkiv does not use the metafun.mem file

I don't know ;-(. I know up to nothing about context and metapost. But
both you and Hans get this regeneration of the formats so I suspect it
is the source of the problem. At least it is certainly not normal and
one should always start with the first error.

Just look at mlib-run.lua from the context distribution, it should
be clear enough.

They are not allowed for « strict » french. But if you type a
conversation, you can have them.

So the rules is not : there's a space before « ! ». But there's a
space befor « ! » if the signe before is not punctuation.
But i understand your point of view. In fact  such a rule is so unknow

Yes you're probably right. But it's hard to determine what is juste
taste or what is rules.

I don't know rules in other languages but in french the footnote sign
is before ponctuation, so having big space before/after is not clean.
If i find the setting for doing this, i'll use it :D. And probably
other french people too.
But a page on the wiki is maybe enough.

Ok, result is join. Not shure it's the good syntax (and test n°4
failed to compile, but it can be my instalation).

So, I guess it would make sense to test the compiler directly:
what is the most basic way to trigger mplib from a plain tex file
directly run through LuaTeX (i.e. the equivalent of the startMPgraphic
if any? (And this might provide some more information on what's going on.)

All ok, I didn't meant that you must switch to minimals .

In Ubuntu I have put  minimals under /opt/luatex/minimals (and minimals-beta
in /opt/luatex/minimals-beta) .
They are unrelated with package system, texlive2007, texlive2008 and so on ;
also installing/updating minimals is easy (at least on ubuntu) apart luatex
version (but it's not really a problem) .
I run every tests under minimals and minimals-beta .
If they work, I assume minimals / minimals-beta are OK .
Your test works on my minimals, so (my) minimals are OK.
So if you install minimals /minimals-beta you can even say what is wrong in
your packaging
(if something is wrong: maybe you have mixed  files) .

I feel good with ubuntu, but for TeX related stuff I prefear manual
installation . I don't expect that anyone agree on this .

I'm sure minimals are worth a try. But as I stated before, everything
but the mplib is working fine + I like the packaging of Norbert Preining
which is very well done and LuaTeX is getting updated very often + I
packaged for Debian a lot of conTeXt style files and font setups for people
in my group + using such official Debian packages gives them a chance to
be improved and debugged which will benefit other people...
