Add this the following code to your document, context resets a few settings
for footnotes to prevent
unwanted side effects from a few commands and I guess this disables also the
chinese line break mechanism.

[NTG-context] Search path for .tex files (mkiv)
Hi,
What is the correct way to set or modify the search path for tex files?
I want to make it mode-dependent. For example, for figures I have
something like
\doifmode{en}
{\def\FigDirLanguage{fig/lang_en}\def\DocumentSuffix{EN}\mainlanguage[en]}
\doifmode{de}
{\def\FigDirLanguage{fig/lang_de}\def\DocumentSuffix{DE}\mainlanguage[de]}
[...]
\setupexternalfigures[directory={fig,{\FigDirLanguage},{../fig},{../\FigDirLanguage}}]
I want to be able to do for example
\input disclaimer
And have it use the correct version. (There are more complicated
scenarios too).
In case there is a better way to do it, what I want is to have language-
or mode- specific versions of some boilerplate texts. These would be
in individual files. Documents elsewhere in a directory tree could
reference these using a standard name and it would be picked according
to the set language/mode.

You can either trigger on the language or on the mode. The directory
structure looks like this

some special meaning, or are you using it as a placeholder for

I am not using the project/product/component system, perhaps I should

right?

I've run across a `}' that doesn't seem to match anything.
For example, `\def\a#1{...}' and `\a}' would produce
this error. If you simply proceed now, the `\par' that
I've just inserted will cause me to report a runaway
argument that might be the root of the problem. But if
your `}' was spurious, just type `2' and it will go away.

[NTG-context] Chinese hyphenation / line splitting
Hi All, We are having a go at typesetting one of our manuals in Chinese (gulp). Is there some trick to getting hyphenation working? (Or perhaps line-splitting is a better term, I don't even know if hyphens are used in Chinese). What I see in the PDF are unbroken lines running off the edge of the page. If I manually insert spaces, then the lines do break but seem to go slightly past the right-hand edge of the paper (so parts of the characters are lost). [NTG-context] gnuplot not working
Hi all,
Is there a problem with gnuplot? I get an error with the minimal example
on the wiki. I think the generated .plt file has an error; it works if I
manually delete the fontscale 1 bit and run context on
test-gnuplot-1.tmp.
Using latest beta, tried with current official gnuplot as well as
mojca-patched version.

Which version of Gnuplot did you use / how did you compile it / with
which sources? If you used the one from modules.contextgarden.net for
windows, that was a bad idea (and my bad that I forgot to remove it
from there) since I haven't updated it for a while.
I changed textscale to fontscale on gnuplot developers' request in
February 2011.
Gnuplot 4.6.0 already includes the context terminal, so it might be
the best idea to try with official gnuplot binary (or sources).

[NTG-context] Image compression/resizing in PDFs
Hi all, Is there a way to have context automatically compress or resample included images to a given output resolution? I have not been following recent developments... I can obviously pre-reduce all images to the desired dpi. But: 1) This is a bit of work (and hard to get non-technical people to do) 2) In 5 years time we might want the images to be higher resolution and not be as concerned about PDF size. But the information will be lost (or be elsewhere). So a command line or document setting would be ideal, is there such a thing? \setpdfimageresolution[300dpi]. [NTG-context] Installing Context Minimals on Windows
Hi, I normally use linux, but I now need to install context on Windows (7). Right now the minimals installation fails for me in various ways, depending on how I do it. Running the graphical installer I get two dialogs update failed error code 1 and make failed error code 1. Using the command line method I get a message about a vtable error when I try to run context. (It looked like the one mentioned in earlier postings, sorry I don't have the exact message now). I want just MKIV + extras (and intend to try TexWorks). Any hints appreciated. But I tried it again, and got something different for some reason, the unknown script context.lua... message. [NTG-context] nomarking function in MKIV
Hi,
I gather the \nomarking function has been removed from MKIV.
All I can find out about this is a note on the Wiki, towards the end of
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/MkIV_Differences
Unfortunately I don't understand the example given.
What I want is to replace things like
\chapter{Short Title \nomarking{Rest Of Title}}
so that Short Title Rest Of Title appears as the chapter title, but
just Short Title appears in the TOC, PDF bookmarks and footers.

That is a bit beyond me... I am guessing this means that there is now a
facility whereby certain commands could be instrumented? In the future?
What I was asking for was a general switch that could turn on
parameter error checking for all commands. (Perhaps the work involved is
too much).

[NTG-context] Windows PDF viewer with refresh?
Hi All, Sorry for the seemingly trivial question, but does anyone have any advice on the best PDF viewer to use on Windows, for use with Context? I can't even seem to find one with refresh! After years of periodic usage of Context on linux, I am now trying to configure it on a Windows system (for someone else). Any suggestions in general for setting up a decent workflow would also be very welcome. First thing to remember is that I started the ConTeXt project many years (5???) ago and the program *and* its documentation have evolved a lot since then. Is there anything in particular new that you think might help? The other thing is that I didn't expect to have to deal with translations. The documentation (and the instrument the manual is for) were both supposed to exist in English only. Yeah. Sure. (We don't do consumer electronics, so regulations are a bit different than for stuff you buy in a shop.) So over these years I've dealt with repeating please send us the manual as Word file for translation queries. Every time I've explained in words of one syllable that there's is and will not be a Word file, that the distributed manual file has origins in a totally different system. We stopped using Word when the file grew so big that Word just couldn't cope and when most of the figures to be included were pdf anyway and thus easily incorporated into ConTeXt files. I always offer to send the potential translators the files and the editing instructions and say that I can do a pdf out of the translated files any time, for example after each chapter. (BTW, if you'd like my editing instructions, I have them somewhere in rtf format.) Certainly, if it is convenient, thank you. The reactions to the above information vary. A South American professional translator took the files without whining and turned in the translated Spanish text with only *two* messed up codes - which is a lot less of a mess than I do when editing. The French gave up directly; they supposedly have a Word version of their own of the manual and so do the Poles. Three other languages were written in Word (or similar) and I had all the fun in cutting-and-pasting the text into the ConTeXt files. Italian was first done with cut-and-paste method, but then needed so much work that to my surprise they edited the ConTeXt files for me with a very good result - that's probably the most accurate translation of the whole lot. 2 out of 7 is not what I was hoping for... I assume these were your agents or similar (rather than professional translators)? If so that is how we were hoping to do it too. The Russian version of our manual is in the works. They wanted to do it all by themselves, but I haven't heard anything since I debugged their last file (encoding problem, Win-cyrillic to UTF). I hope that means everything is under control there... They are basically working on a pared-down duplicate system so we can easily exchange files. I should add that except for the South American translator and the Russians, the other persons are not IT people, nerds or not necessarily even that computer litterate (if their usage of Word is anything to go by). If your translators are used to structural coding (html, for example) and especially if they already use suitable editors, you'll have a lot less problems. Not much chance of that I'm afraid. Although there's no reason I could not tell them to use Scite or similar. I was going to try saving the tex original as .doc - word seems to open it OK - and then saving *their* end product as encoded text/UTF8. Has anyone tried this? Then the practical aspect. What I had from the beginning is a system where each chapter of the manual is a file of its own - makes it much easier to handle. Most of the formatting and setups is in the main file, so the chapters just contain list of figures and then the text itself. This makes them much easier to edit and handle. I was going to have a single environment file, which the translators never see, then a *single* document file. But perhaps separate chapters would be better... My document is not so big, maybe 30 pages of text (plenty of screen captures too). So perhaps my document is like one of your chapters. But there could be several other documents in the pipeline, so am trying to come up with a workable approach. When I started getting the languages, I made subdirectories for them, one per language. This is where I put the tex files for that language + all the figures that have translated text in them; ConTeXt will look first in the same directory and then further afield, so if there's a translated figure, it will get used. If not, the figures of the English manual are used. That way I don't have to repeat anything that has no text in it - and the manuals compile from the beginning, first English everywhere and then little by little with translations. [NTG-context] Design for Translation
Hi,
I am wondering how best to go about creating an evolving document that
will need translation.
This is a manual that will probably need to be produced - and
maintained - in around 6 languages.
For what it is worth, I have come up with two approaches, which
follow.
But I would really appreciate any insights anyone may have.

This will work until we need to modify the file, then how to

That appears to be exactly what I was after!
(Sorry I don't have MKIV set up right now but will try it when I can).
I don't know if it is of general interest.
I find that writing documents for context - once you get used to it -
is much nicer than using a wordprocessor.
But the process of entering tables remains tedious and error prone,
compared to e.g. the Word equivalent that many will be used to.

[NTG-context] Using texexec to prepare single-sided PDF for double-sided printing
Hi, I would like to use texexec to post-process a large pdf file, so as to prepare it for double sided printing. The existing file has a large left hand margin on each page, so as to allow binding. I would like to change this so that odd (right) pages have a large left margin, and even (left) pages a large right margin. I don't want to put 2 pages on one output sheet - although the ability to fine-tune the scaling might be useful. I have experimented with plenty of combinations of texexec --pdfarrange ...but I am not getting anywhere. Any suggestions appreciated. I am on debian and there are plenty of other pdf tools, but none of these seem quite right either. It would seem a common enough requirement but nothing quite works! From what I observed and understand (from the manual and

number=yes/no : doesn't have any effect at all
Removes the number from \chapter etc.
page=yes : starts (a section block on) a new (left or right) page
page=no : doesn't have any effect at all
Continues the next sectionblock on the same page as the lest block ends.
page=right: starts (a section block on) a (new) right page
before/after : before/after starting the new page
\page[left/right] : forces a left/right page
The following
\setupsectionblock[backpart][before={\page[left]}]
gives more what I was looking after, however there's still
a blank numbered page as the last chapter's last page
which I've unsuccessfully been trying to get without page
number.
But only in MkII, if you have a problem with this in MkIV make a example.
I have been struggling with some similar issues (in MkII). I was
getting an extra page at the end of a document which came and went for
reasons that were unclear to me. And then there was the issue (bug?)
about getting to the back page of a booklet which you helped me with

While your solution seemed to work well originally, it seems to be

[NTG-context] Specifying last page when using imposition
Hi,
I am using imposition to arrange pages in a booklet format, a5 on
a4. So after all the pages are printed out (doublesided) I can fold
the stack in half to get my booklet.
So I am using the command
texexec --arrange --paperformat=a5a4 --printformat=up test.tex
...which works well.
Now I want to write content to appear on the last page. Here is my
test file:
\setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided]
\starttext
\showframe
\subject Front Cover
\dorecurse{10}{\input tufte \par}
\page[yes,last]
\raggedcenter
Back Cover
\stoptext
But this does not do what I want. Back Cover appears on document
page 9, but on page 4 (of 6) of the output pdf. It needs to be on page
1 of the output (i.e. opposite document page 1).
Any suggestions?

I have got this working now too. The problems were:
- the syntax seems to have changed since I originally used it. Used
to be \startGNUPLOTgraphic now needs to be \startGNUPLOTscript
- I missed the bit on the wiki about enabling write18
- I was misled by some examples (in the source code) into thinking
that parameters go in curly brackets, but this does not work for
me (and fails silently).
So in the source code you have
\startGNUPLOTscript{sin}
plot sin(x)
\stopGNUPLOTscript
\useGNUPLOTgraphic{sin}
but I needed
\startGNUPLOTscript[sin]
plot sin(x)
\stopGNUPLOTscript

I'm sorry about that. Yes, the syntax change is my fault, but it won't
happen again. If I wanted to support
\useGNUPLOTgraphic[sin][1,3][width=.7\textwidth]
and alike, the curly braces didn't fit in so nicely.
Yes it's fine, the square brackets are better.
The module has initially been part of ConTeXt (Hans has written most
of it at the beginning), but it was easier to develop it as a module
once I started writing metapost code for the dedicated terminal etc.
I have removed the faulty examples a few days ago (just didn't upload
the new version yet). I was trying to write code in such a way that
curly braces would work as well for backward compatibility, but failed
to do so (the code is there, but only half of it works). However, all
of these changes have happened rather early in the process and won't
happen again.
Moreover, it would be nice to get the TikZ terminal working with
ConTeXt (I need to find some time for it, and then finally convince
the gnuplot developers to include it into the binary).
I really like gnuplot and the gnuplot module. It is great to be able
to include the data inline with the document. And it would be nice to
see it part of the distribution. I am using a stock debian gnuplot, so
I don't know the implications of the context and TikZ terminals. Does
it mean I would not end up with so many *-gnuplot-* files? :)

A quick try of the example snippet did not work (see dump at end of
message) but I will look into it more and try Mojcas advice re
ctxtools --update.
ctxtools --update won't help you as you have some missing fonts
(msam7.tfm).
http://packages.debian.org/etch/all/texlive-base/filelist claims that
the file should be present in texlive-base in Debian, so it's a bit
confusing.

But I don't know what else is needed.
I would say that the installation might be slightly broken, even if
only a few variables are missing. How exactly did you install LuaTeX
and latest ConTeXt?

Setting TEXMF was missing from the instructions in debian...
This should not happen, but once you answer the question about how you
have installed it, it might become clearer.
Some time ago there was some problem on debian since Hans's lua
scripts were unable to parse TEXMFCNF (texmf.cnf) files properly, but
this might have been resolved in the meantime.

Mark IV is the name of the LuaTeX-aware part of ConTeXt; that is, when you
use ConTeXt over the LuaTeX engine instead of PDFTeX or XeTeX. You run it
with texexec --lua.
Currently the integration of Mark IV into Debian is not completely done,
especially because the details are currently worked out (see the dev-context
mailing list).
If you want to start using Mark IV the following the following few points
should get you started:
1) Right versions:
luatex = 0.20.2
context = 2007.12.20
2) environment variables and luatex-cache
Mark IV ships its own implementation of file searching and doesn't
use the ls-R databases, but luatex-cache. You have to tell luatools
where to find texmf.cnf, and then generate the cache:
export TEXMFCNF=/usr/share/texmf/web2c
luatools --generate --verbose
This will generate the luatex-cache in $HOME. If you want to put it
somewhere else set (and export) the TEXMFCACHE variable (like
export TEXMFCACHE=/tmp)
3) Generate a Mark IV format
This is not integrated into the usual format building process, and
probably will need some time to be worked out completely as the
current fmtutil cannot cope with Mark IV formats. Call
luatools --ini --compile cont-en
4) Now you can try some simple document like (thanks to Arthur Reutenauer)

or the equivalent:

You can also do more elaborate calculations with the lua math library:

I am only teasing. I love context, and have been using it for years now on linux. But I only get to use it intermittently, and only rarely get involved with the installation itself... the main ingredients for a working set up are: TEXMF, TEXMFCNF and sometimes TEXMFCACHE (keep in mind that traditional tex distribiutions can have hard coded paths and assumptions) ...so I forget the mechanics of how tex is configured and how it finds everything.
