I also have a Sparc server but I cannot remote access it from my location now. But I feel no need to run context on the Sparc. The person who asked us for adding Solaris x86 support is not using Solaris any more, in last month there was no single Solaris user downloading the minimals and after Oracle overtake, I have been seriously considering removing support for solaris. However, if there is demand for it, we can keep it. OK. If I'm the only user it's not that important to make it run just for me. The question is: is these because there's LuaTeX beta-0.61.0 instead of the latest LuaTeX available or is it because my virtual machine (OpenSolaris whatever-version-has-been-available-two-months-ago) and your server incompatible in some sense? I suspect that it is the second. If you are willing to help us debug, I can try to send you unstripped binary. I will help as much as I can. I did some investigation. The results: I cannot execute the provided binaries, maybe you're right and the systems are incompatible. I downloaded the luatex trunk and compiled the source. I can successfully execute the compiled binary. After having a look at the first-setup.sh script I performed the mtxrun ... line. As expected it failed (as I cannot execute the binaries). I replaced the luatex binary with the fresh compiled one and checked the other programs. Result: I can execute all binaries exept luatex and pdftex. Since I only use MkIV this should not be a problem. So I made the formats and compiled my test document. MkIV works (including metapost). So finally I can get a running system by myself. I will write my own »first-setup.sh« to update my system. - To update the system I can use the following command, right? mtxrun --verbose --script ./bin/mtx-update.lua --force --engine=luatex --texroot=$PWD/tex --extras=all - After replacing the »buggy« luatex I make the formats using: mtxrun --verbose --script ./bin/mtx-update.lua --make --force --engine=luatex --texroot=$PWD/tex Please correct me if I use the wrong arguments. I don't really understand the use of all the options. How can I check the luatex version used in the minimals? Maybe it is saved in some text file. Background: If the luatex version changes my script needs to fetch the new trunk, compile and replace the »buggy or incompatible« binary. Simply getting the binary and execute --version triggers the error mentioned before. Thanks for your help. [NTG-context] Questions regarding the bibliography
Hi, I've a bunch of questions regarding the bibliography. I didn't find much useful information somewhere, neither in the wiki, the manual or in bibmod-doc.pdf. If my questions are answered elsewhere feel free to point me to the right direction. 1) Why are there redundant keys in the publication list: \startpublication [ k=ram, t=book, a=Ramez Elmasri, % BTW: How to input many authors in this place? y=1981, % not taken into account u=http://foo.bar.com ] \author {Ramez}[R.]{}{Elmasri} % Is it OK to leave out the first bracket? \pubyear {2007} \biburl {http://foo.bar.com} \stoppublication I checked that the »y=1981« is not taken into account, in fact I can remove it without problems, if I remove \pubyear it doesn't work. What's »y=...« for? Same goes for \author vs. a=... Why two locations for the author and url...? 2) What about not valid entries? \biburl for example is not a valid BibTeX entry type, it's neither required, nor optional. Can I provide it without running into problems? Providing for example \country leads to problems with the year. But \biburl is not used in the style, \country is. 3) During testing I forgot to say \usemodule[bib] and it worked well. Is this line not needed any more? 4) How to specify the \edition entry? Use the attached file for testing. If I specify \edition {5} I get »5 edition« using the setup \setuppublications[alternative=num]. That's wrong, either 5th edition or edition 5. When I use \setuppublications[alternative=ams] I get 5th ed. That's correct. For this reason I cannot enter \edition {5th}. The correct input should be independent from the style used. 5) How to specify online sources? BibTeX has no proper data type for this. But BibLaTeX has the type »online« with the special field urldate (for the access date). Maybe there's a corresponding functionality in ConTeXt. Thanks in advance. Whether this is broken and/or a bug is not clear cut, but the Bold Italic font does not have a default script, so it needs an explicit script=latn in the feature setup (the other fonts actually do have a default script, it is just the bold italic that does not have one). I don't really know how to set that up in such a way that it will not affect other fonts as well, but as a workaround/large hammer method, adding this \definefontfeature[default][default][script=latn] before loading the typescript will probably work. So, the easiest solution is to move (or perhaps simlink) the file to the temporary directory. Then you can include the file tmp/t.tex and the md5 hash will be created in the tmp directory. It will probably work, but is not a nice solution in my opinion. It looks strange that the document includes files from the tmp directory. From a tmp directory I expect to be able to delete the content without any effects. Anyway, I don't really care, since I usually don't delete the temporary files. Is it possible to convince the context script to remove the temporary stuff when called with the --purgeall option? I will look into that. I guess that the easiest way out is that, instead of using .vimout extension, I use .tmp extension. Then, all the temporary files will be removed by --purgeall. I don't think so. AFAIK --purgeall only deletes .tmp files with the basename as the document itself. I think it would make sense to convince --purgeall to be more grabby and to remove all .tmp files in the working dir + all files in the »directory« dir (here tmp). I don't know how to implement this functionality and still provide a working pdf. No problem. I'm very satisfied with the module at this state. It would just be a nice-to-have feature. To save time, t-vim (actually t-filter with continue=yes) runs the external filter only in the first run; in the subsequent runs the cached file is used. So, if I want to delete the temporary files, they must be deleted in the last run. Right now, there is no means of detecting the last run in MkIV. The only thing that comes to my mind is to delete the files (of course only when --purgeall is set) after *every* run. That's quite inefficient (since vim is run every time again) but it would produce correct ouput and delete the files. On 2011-03-12 Florian Wobbe florian.wo...@awi.de wrote: Maybe we should start a discussion in a new thread to find out: 1) why users are confused with mkiv/mkii? Because the old manuals only mention mkii and many things have changed in mkiv and don't work in mkii. It is not easy for beginners to choose between mkii and mkiv. And many are not aware of the two different (and incompatible) versions and mix them up. 2) why they my be reluctant to install the minimals? First: Users like to install software using the package management system. Installing software manually is considered evil. For software that is updated frequently usually ppa links are provided for the repository. Second: You mentioned it already. Users tend to install »maximals«, not minimals, they don't like rectricted versions if you can get the whole. ;) 3) how to restructure the garden to make things clearer for newcomers? Make it clear that the minimals are the standard way of using ConTeXt, not TeXlive when they want an up-to-date ConTeXt distribution. A clear advise for mkiv and contra mkii. mkiv is the way to go in the future. 4) how do users look for information and how to optimise the garden for search engine requests? I don't see a problem there (but still, maybe other people have). Searching the mailing list, the garden or google for context + pragma usually points to the right direction. 5) how to better promote context to new/latex users? Provide examples using the described features, so they have a point to start from. This is solved in a good way in the pdf documents, not really on the wiki. I understand the problem. Having said that, pages like Using Mark IV or Install Mark IV should be renamed to installing/using context. ACK Then I am aware of many people who are reluctant to install the minimals. I now wonder why I (myself) was unwilling to install the minimals in the first place, having TeXLive installed already. For one it was because of the extra effort. But I recall it was also the name The ConTeXt MINIMAL distribution that kept me. The name minimal somehow suggested something incomplete or minor to me. I don’t think so because it’s common in magazines but TeX isn’t the best tool for this. I have no idea how package management works for MacOS, if something like repositories exist or how software is installed/updated. And leave the existing interface for the other platforms, since the vast majority uses either Linux, Windows or MacOS. Just a few thoughts: 1. linux ≠ ubuntu/debian. Maintaining a repository for all different linux distros in their different package formats would be a nightmare. ACK. 2. Maintaining a cross-platform GUI is incredibly difficult. gtk is an absolute non-starter on OS X. If you say so. But anyway, we should not discuss about which GUI toolkit we use, since it is not at all decided that anything will change at this point. 3. Resources are limited. I would rather they go into development of luatex and mkiv then into eye-candy for mouse-pushers. 4. We now get reports from people (not necessarily, but sometomes newbies) going I ran command X, and the output was Y. With a GUI we get: I pushed the button, you know the one with the letters on it, and nothing happened. GUIs have a tendency to hide useful information, making debugging all but impossible. (I sometimes look at comp.text.tex on usenet - the number of people who confuse their editor and its shiny interface with the underlying TeX engine is staggering; the same would happen here). I agree. My thought was thefollowing: The installation/update of ConTeXt is not integrated into the systems default methods. How often do we get installation help requests on the mailing list (on every platform)! Supporting the default installation/update method of the operating system would not necessarily need a GUI and be easy for the users. 5. Even if it's easy to create a debian package for the modules, who's going to create and maintain it? The creation of the package is scriptable. When the module developer uploads/updates a module a (not yet existing) script is called that creates the Debian package, which is saved in the repository. Of course a scriptable solution breaks when e.g. dependencies are not met. 6. Offering a GUI sends out a wrong message to new users: it pretends that this is just something that will work the same way as their word processor or office program works. But once people actually want to do useful things, they need to learn a minimum of coding techniques. Users will then feel deceived because the shiny GUI made them believe they could just write away and click buttons. In sum: I see no compelling reason in favor of, but many important reasons against such an installer. As said before: Supporting the native package installation mechanisms of the major OSs/distributions would be a big help. For the rest the present mechanisms work fine. Re: [NTG-context] Metapost inclusion does not work
Hi Mojca You can most probably do export TEXMFCACHE=~/.context/texmf-cache as well (but then every user would have to generate his own database). OK. That's true. But then I will end up in redundant data. Maybe export TEXMFCACHE=/var/tmp/context/texmf-cache works. Then I have no world write permission in the /usr tree. I'll check it next update. Do you mean because of the old luatex binary (Hans seems to have been a bit busy in the meantime) in linux or is there some other reason? No. The luatex binary is way too old for the »beta« tree. But it's not a real problem as it always can be updated manually. ./first-setup.sh --flags='[you need a pattern to ignore luatex binary when syncing]' This looks nice as a workaround 'till 0.50 will face away. With MkIV \cap and \nocap is no longer necessary when you have a opentype font with the smcp (smallcapitals) and c2sc (capitals to smallcapitals) features. Thanks for your explanation. But why doesn't your example work with the latin modern fonts? Don't they have these features? I'd be surprised when they don't have small caps. I'm against wikifying MKII stuff. Maybe I'll add a MKII-only note. When I'm not completely mistaken I think its use should fade away in the near future. So creating documentation for MKII is a waste of time. They don't have a small caps OpenType feature (smcp) for a reason beyond to me, they however have an old-fashioned separate small caps font. this is because they are cm compatible (the initial objective of the project was a merge of all those variants) Thanks for the explanation. That doesn't seem to harm. marco ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
[NTG-context] \hyphenation ignored
Hi, I've a problem with the command \hyphenation. It does not seem to work for me. See following MWE: \mainlanguage [de] \starttext \hyphenation{Index-eintrag} \hyphenatedword{Indexeintrag} % Gives Inde-xein-trag \stoptext In this example the word »Indexeintrag« is mishyphenated. I expect to see »Index-eintrag« as output of \hyphenatedword. The \hyphenation command seems to be ignored. Thanks in advance. [NTG-context] Hyphenation of composed words
Hi, I've yet another hyphenation problem. I cannot get proper hyphenation in composed words. Take this MWE: \setuplayout [width=1.5cm] \starttext composed-word\par % not hyphenated, as expected composed||word\par % wrong: hyphenated, but an en-dash is used, % not a hyphen, so [sign=wide] seems to be the default composed|-|word\blank % wrong: hyphenated, but the hyphen is at the start of % the next line \setuphyphenmark [sign=normal] % For hyphenation a hyphen is used, % not an endash composed-word\par % not hyphenated, as expected composed||word\par % wrong: hyphen is at the start of the next line composed|-|word % wrong: hyphen is at the start of the next line \blank[2*line] \setbreakpoints [compound] % my workaround composed-word\par % correct hyphenation behaviour with hyphen \stoptext I hope with the comments the problem is clear. At first the default value for »sign« is wrong. It has to be »normal«. But with »normal« I cannot get the hyphen at the end of the line, instead it always appeares at the beginning of the next line. The workaround works but has the disadvantage that everything is hyphenated, everywhere. I prevent this at the moment by using bars: |not-a-composed-word| Thanks in advance Marco ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

I hope with the comments the problem is clear. At first the default value for »sign« is wrong. It has to be »normal«. But with »normal« I cannot get the hyphen at the end of the line, instead it always appeares at the beginning of the next line. At the moment I use \def\compoundhyphen{-} instead of \setuphyphenmark. It seems to work (mkii). Thomas Yes, it works also in MKIV. This is a better workaround than mine. But Hans said he'll fix it next beta. So I hope I'll not need it. Nevertheless thanks for this snippet. It produces exactly the behaviour I expect. [NTG-context] Switch for sans slanted
Hi, I've a question concerning switching fonts in setups. How to get a sans slanted style? Have a look at the following table. Command Style Comment \ss sansOK \bf boldOK \ssbf sansboldOK \sl slanted OK \sssl sansslanted \sssl OK, sansslanted doesn't work I've made a minimal example to demonstrate how I use the commands. \starttext {\setuphead [section] [textstyle=sans] % OK \section {sans}\input knuth\relax} {\setuphead [section] [textstyle=bold] % OK \section {bold}\input knuth\relax} {\setuphead [section] [textstyle=sansbold] % OK \section {sansbold}\input knuth\relax} {\setuphead [section] [textstyle=slanted] % OK \section {slanted}\input knuth\relax} {\setuphead [section] [textstyle=sansslanted] % doesn't work \section {sansslanted}\input knuth\relax} {\setuphead [section] [textstyle=\sssl] % OK \section {Command: sssl}\input knuth\relax} \stoptext Is there a different command to achieve sansslanted? sansbold works, and bold is an alternative as slanted is, so intuitively I would expect sansslanted also to work. So sansbold is defined by default and sansslanted isn't (because it is not needed so often I assume). That's not intuitive but as the styles are easily created it is OK for me. 1. || does *not* produce a en-dash but to kerned hyphens You're right, I looked it up in the sources. It just looked like an en-dash for me. But this is wrong. For hyphenation a hyphen is used. The font designer has created a dedicated glyph for this purpose. And two hyphens (or an en-dash) is too large. I've never seen the advice in a typography book to kern two hyphens. I don't know why this is implemented like this. 2. The correct method to get a *normal* hyphen is \setuphyphenmark[sign=normal] Yes, this is the correct method. It should be enabled by default. If somebody wants a larger hyphen (for some mysterious reasen), he/she can set it up with \setuphyphenmark[sign=wide] If the output is not correct it's a bug. Yes, it is a bug. Hans already confirmed and said, he'll fix it, but it is not yet done, that's why I wanted to remember him. You can try and run the example from my first post. With Thomas' workaround the output is OK, but it is only a workaround. I (and probably many other users) would like to have correct behaviour by default. Re: [NTG-context] Hyphenation of composed words
You're right, I looked it up in the sources. It just looked like an en-dash for me. But this is wrong. For hyphenation a hyphen is used. The font designer has created a dedicated glyph for this purpose. And two hyphens (or an en-dash) is too large. I've never seen the advice in a typography book to kern two hyphens. I don't know why this is implemented like this. because we needed it to be this way: we use it for separating compound words and then we want to have the hyphen between the compounds to be different from the ones within That's not how it is done in everyday typography, seems to be more a border case. .. also, the reason for kerned hyphens instead of an endash is simple: the endash is too thin (at least in lm) That's true. The en-dash is condiderably thinner. this works ok here (and i'm prety sure that it's also ok a few betas ago) \starttext test||test \setuphyphenmark[sign=normal] test||test test|-|test \stoptext Sure, my fault. This works. There _was_ a bug with the hyphen appearing on the start of the next line. This is fixed. Thank you. I thought you would also fix the »wrong« hyphenation sign, so I didn't check, just assumed that both issues aren't fixed. So \setuphyphenmark[sign=normal] works now as expected (even if it's not the default). Thanks for this fix. and the defaults are unlikely to change, but you can set it in your local cont-sys.tex file Ah, I see. I was not aware of a user configuration file (wiki helps how to set it up I just looked). So I can put my »personal« default hyphen there.
