[obc] West of Quebec Wheelers Tour du Pont

2002-09-27 Thread Kevin Nelson

Tour des Ponts (Fall Colours) Ride
Hosted by the West of Quebec Wheelers

Departing October 6th at 9:30am from the Cheshire Cat Pub
2193 Richardson Side Road, Carp

Fee: $20.00 WQW Members / $25.00 Non-Members
(please bring exact change)

Registration: 8:45 – 9:15am
Your fee includes an afternoon post-ride meal and pint at the pub. There
will be a choice of vegetarian lasagne or steak and mushrooms with
chips. The selection is made at the time of registration. All
participants must sign a waiver form when registering. No waiver, no
ride.

The Routes:
1. 120km (approx.) and includes a stop at Pine Lodge for a quick (we
hope) lunch.
Riders are responsible for the cost of this meal.
2. 160km (approx.) and includes a short stop at a convenience store to
stock up.

The Philosophy:
In the spirit of all WQW rides we hope to cycle in groups – not solo.
Two groups will likely be formed for the 160 km route (sportif and not
so sportif). Depending on rider abilities, the 120km participants will
ride as a single pack for most of the trip or may form two packs at the
halfway point. Please be responsible for others in your group
(especially the friends you've brought along) and avoid dropping riders.
Be aware of what's happening around you. We are out to have a good cycle
and see the colours, not to compete with other riders. If you are
uncertain about your abilities and what group to ride with, please speak
to the organizers at registration.

Notice of Intention to Register:
To assist staff at the Cheshire Cat in planning the meals we request you
send us a short e-mail if you are committed to the tour.

[obc] New time trial pages

2002-09-13 Thread Kevin Nelson

Just wanted to say nice job on the time trail pages on the club website.

Very clean, easy to read, and very fast to load.
I liked the ability to look up all my results quickly, and also to see
the results in my category.

And it was fast!!!

Good job Rod.

RE: [obc] Champlain Bridge - Oh dear!

2002-08-12 Thread Kevin Nelson

Instead of sighing out loud on this forum, why not try calling or
e-mailing someone at the NCC? The bridge is new, the three lane idea is
new problems will be worked out I'm sure but unless they are made
aware of the problems they can't be worked out.

I doubt anybody from the NCC Engineering Construction branch reads
this forum and I no longer work there.

[obc] bikes and music

2002-08-09 Thread Kevin Nelson

From www.globeandmail.com - the facts and arguments page.

Composers and bicycles

The invention of the bicycle sparked a social revolution in the 19th
century, writes Graeme Fife in BBC Music magazine. Composers celebrated
the joys of the velocipede in song (and musical wags made reference to
Wagner's Ring cycle). Some notes about classical composers and bikes:

I seem to be absolutely born for the cycle, wrote Gustav Mahler
(1860-1911), and I've already reached the stage where all the horses
avoid me, but I'm still not good at ringing my bell. He claimed that
only cycling offered any relief from the chronic pain of his
hemorrhoids.

The plot of the opera Fedora, by Umberto Giordano (1867-1948) included
an abduction by bicycle.

Ernest Chausson (1855-99), the death-obsessed French composer, died when
he was pitched from his bike and he struck a stone wall head first.

When Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934), a keen biker, was knighted in 1904,
he cycled 50 miles to break the good news to his elderly father.

[obc] Maps

2002-06-05 Thread Kevin Nelson

Since making maps puts bread on my table I feel adequately qualified to
comment on this subject.

Producing maps can be expensive. Today, all maps are created using GIS
(Geographic Information Systems) - computer software that combines
graphics (lines representing roads, shapes representing lakes etc.) with
attribute information about those graphics (road names, lake names etc.)

Desktop versions of these systems start at $2000. Then you need to buy
data, although a lot can be had for free if you know how to find it.
Then you need to manipulate the graphics based on the attributes. Then
you need to decide how to publish the data. And when teh data changes -
a new road gets built, or a dirt road gets paved, somebody has to update
the database. The prohibiting factor in these types of initiatives is
time - time is expensive.

Publishing takes two forms (at least as has been requested on this
list), internet or hardcopy (paper).

Internet mapping is a world in itself. There are two general options:
provide map images (in .jpg, .bmp etc) of a map that a GIS technician
has prepared. End users on the internet access this image the same as
opening a picture of say, Lance Armstrong, but a map image is generally
quite large - it has to be in order to provide the necessary information
in a legible manner. This causes issues with file storage, download
time, and end users having the right tool to view the map etc. These are
all issues that can be overcome, but not easily or cheaply.

The other option is more interactive for the end user, but very
expensive. It involves a GIS web server (hardware), another type of GIS
web software, and time spent developing a user interface to simplify the
access for end-users i.e. programming a button to display the OBC route
from Ottawa to Manotick. This is the future of the mapping industry, but
right now, a minimum cost of $50,000 to implement would be my best
guess. (Most ISP's don't have the required type of server). An example
of this type of website is Mapquest.

Hardcopy maps again require lots of time. The same data would be used to
do the internet mapping, or the hardcopy maps, but it is a question of
time. How to colour the roads, how to label the roadnames, what size
paper to put it on etc. I don't think the OBC could sell enough to make
the investment worthwhile.

So although the idea is great, and it would be fun for someone like me
to do, I don't think that we are going to see OBC route maps on the
internet anytime soon, or an official OBC hardcopy map for sale in the
stores. Time to produce and cost of producing are just too prohibitive
at this time.

Many people have mentionned great alternatives here. try them. Or, get
out on your bike, turn down a road and see where you end up.

RE: [obc] got my answer

2002-04-12 Thread Kevin Nelson

Sounds like a Yes wheel regs in effect for all sanctioned racing.
 Opinions?

I won't quewstion the reasoning, but my problem is this: I ride on Rolf
Vector Comps (which I have now found out are illegal), I do mostly
unsanctionned training races and maybe one or two sanctionned races a
year. It will cost me between $600 - $800 to get a pair of legal wheels
(at least the ones that I want). So, I probably won't do that just for a
couple of races a year. Which means I will just continue with the
non-sanctionned training races only :-(

Question: how much could I expect to pay for a pair of 32-spoke wheels
with a standard rim (say a Mavic Open Pro) on Ultegra Hubs?

[obc] Tronna

2002-04-10 Thread Kevin Nelson

Oh yes. I remember Toronto riding.
Nothing improves your bike handling like dodging traffic in 6 different
lanes, and, streetcar tracks.

We are very lucky in Ottawa. With the parkways and wide roads, some with
bike lanes or shoulders, going in all directions, getting around Ottawa
by bike is simple and safe.

And Gatineau Park is only 20 minutes away - by bike.

Some people in Toronto drive two hours to go for a three hour ride in a
place not even close to being like the Park. Then they drive two hours
to go home. Not my idea of fun.

If I hadn't moved here, I probably would have quit cycling.

[obc] Lets just go for a ride

2002-04-09 Thread Kevin Nelson

Regardless of the formalities of who runs this list (Greg Franks, Topica
.. whatever) this list exists to provide another means of getting
information to Ottawa Bicycle Club members, and for OBC members to have
a common discussion area (hence, OBC in the list name!). Pointe finale.

Unfortunately because of the type of posts that have been on here in the
last couple of days, many OBC members refuse to look here any more. The
history of this list is well lined with attacks against the OBC in
general and personal attacks against individuals. Sadly I don't blame
people for ignoring some of the crap. Mr. Slavitch, you are not helping
matters. The usefulness of this list is sadly diminished from what it
once was.

As much as people agree or disagree with the concept of a formalized
Board of Directors to run a club, for a club like the OBC, to offer all
of the various activities it does, and do it as well as the OBC does,
the Board is needed. People get the chance to be on the board, pick who
is on the board and bitch at the board. The last option is arguably more
popular.

Hey everybody, if you don't like how something works, let us on the
board know in a constructive manner. Don't just bitch. I at least, am
going to ignore all bitchy people from now on!

The roads are drying, the temperature is warming up, the trees will soon
be green and shading the wonderful roads we have at our fingertips.

Now go ride your bikes.

[obc]

2001-10-24 Thread Kevin Nelson

I never made mention of Manny in my message ...

I am referring to people who have a proven history of writing negative,
accusatory comments in regards to OBC activities, and also personally
against OBC Board members.

And I am also referring to people who have never participated in OBC
activities this year, but in late September they decided to join the
club. One must ask why? ... my guess is so that they can come to the AGM
and vote. While its true that all members are allowed an equal vote
according to the constitution, I fail to understand what reason people
would have to vote if they have not taken part in any of the club
events.

Many people have written to me since my posting saying they want to be
part of a CYCLING club, not a political organization. I could not agree
more with this statement, I have been saying this since I started as a
Board member. My post was an attempt to bring to light issues of another
group with political interests taking over the OBC (taking over is an
actual quote I heard). I supported Avery so loudly because he is
determined to keep the focus of the OBC on those events that members
have shown interest in.

Maybe my method was flawed, but I am not going to apologize for doing
what I have done. And I truly wish I could be at the AGM where I could
have brought these things to light in a more proper way. Unfortunately,
I am currently in Vancouver for work.

I wish you all well tonight. I hope things don't get out of hand, but
that all issues are discussed in a thoughtful, meaningful way.

[obc] Annual General Meeting

2001-10-18 Thread Kevin Nelson

While most people have probably started to think about skiing instead of
cycling by now, there is still one very important activity left for OBC
members. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Wed. Oct 24.

Historically, interest in the AGM from most OBC members is very low.
This is wrong because to be blunt about, the AGM is where the Board of
Directors is selected for the next year - this is the group of people
that decided how to spend YOUR membership fees and organize YOUR events.

This year, although I am a Director of the club, I will not be able to
attend due to work committments. I feel quite bad about this because I
am hearing rumours that some of the people who are planning to attend
the AGM are people who have publicly and loudly pronounced their
disapproval of the OBC, the current board of directors and the
President, Avery Burdett in particular. Some of these people are from
other cycling groups. I have heard it said that these people want to
take over the OBC for the other groups purposes. This is very troubling
as it may mean a change in the types of programs that the OBC offers
(i.e. no more time trials maybe?). I do know that a lot of these people
are not necessarily interested in the same type of cycling that the OBC
and its members tend to focus their energies on - group tours for all
abilities (beginners to racers), time trials, overnight tours etc.

For the first time in my experience in the club, there is an election
race for the position of President. For the past two years I think Avery
has done an excellent job of keeping the club finances in check, keeping
interest in many different activities high, representing the interests
of the OBC cyclists and helping the other directors in managing the wide
variety of events the OBC offers you. As we all know, he is extremely
passionate about all types of cycling. He has been seen on his bike at
almost every OBC activity. Each year he has been involved has been
better than the last.

He is more than capable of carrying on in these duties.

I urge all OBC members to think about how they want their club to
continue. It is crucial this year as there is a risk that all of the
hard work that Avery and the current Board have put in may be lost.
Please do your part and come out and vote to keep things progressing for
the better.
