However, from your description it is not clear to me whether you see the

setup your certificates, but maybe a simple openvas-mkcert
call like you did for the intial install helps. This is the self-signed way.

OpenVAS-7 is released almost over nine month ago and therefore pre-conditions
are soon (January 25th) met
starting the retirement procedure?
The End-of-Life date for OpenVAS-6 would be around April/May 2015.

For OpenVAS-8 we will switch to openvas-smb on a mandatory basis (ie still
optional

In fact this change will happen very soon in SVN.
This is done now in SVN r21407.

Note that the whole OSP feature is very new and under heavy development.
I use the omp command line tool to test the OSP scanners separately (without the
OpenVAS Manager).

and there it is in the Notes Management.
Will improvements be published within OpenVAS-7 updates already, or do I
have to wait until OpenVAS-8 will be released?
In general we backport many improvements as long as they
do not require new database model or new OMP.

Apart from the API document there are some examples in the Learning Center
of the Greenbone website which should be uptodate and working.
We are lacking a real programmers guide for OMP indeed.
