Hi Bob, I am with you on the K-5 idiosyncrasies and read about this
particular silly battery problem. I also read on the net not to wait
for a complete discharge of the battery, but to recharge them when the
camera shows half to quarter charge. Li-ion cells do not have the
dreaded memory effect.
I don't believe I've ever encountered this problem with my K-5, which operates
only on Pentax batteries -- two at a time, because I always use the grip, and I
charge the batteries more often than needed. I did experience occasional
shutdowns with my K20D, in which I used a variety of third
I've mentioned before that the Nikon D1 has/had this problem with
batteries showing half or quarter charge and getting blanks pictures.
I have not used it in a while, and i now have third party batteries
for the D1 and D1H, but also for my K10d and never noticed this on the
K10D.

On Fri,
Bipin,
The 6 AA batteries I used in my grip were not rechargables.
They were good quality, single use NICa's(?), but not lithiums.
The reason I picked up the two spare was to change from AA's
to another camera battery in the grip.
The grip came with two different battery carriers.
Regards, Bob S.

I have noticed on both the K10D K20D with battery grips that when
the camera is set to use the battery in the grip first, it does not

Hello Folks, I have been using high quality 3rd Party Batteries from
Amazon com and Sandisk Extreme cards with my K-5 and have not had any
of the problems reported here. In fact the 3rd Party Batteries work
just as well as the original Pentax at 1/4 to 1/3rd of the price.
I do clean the battery

Bipin,
I've got some 3rd party batteries in use with my K-5.
I just bought 2 spares and still have an older one (K-7 spare?).
Battery power seems to be the first place to check for problems on the K-5.
This is tricky because the battery can look OK - but not really...

Turning the camera off and back on is a trick that I use on my K100DS.
Often times, it is enough to change the indicator from empty to half
full.

At the PDML Marin gathering, on two occasions my K-5 locked up, with the mirror
up. Turning the power off, and back on, fixed the problem. Someone suggested
that it might have been low batteries, so I shrugged it off.
