GESO: Some Insignificant Images
The past few weeks has been hectic - I seem to have spent most of my time either as Mr Fixit or organizing Road Races. Photography has been far from my mind. This afternoon I decided to put things right & try out my recently obtained FA 100mm f2.8 Macro. These are all shots around my garden. It is suppose to be the cold time of the year but we haven't seen that yet. The birds & the plants all think it is Spring already but I suspect we are all in for a nasty surprise! https://www.flickr.com/photos/87994495@N06/sets/72157710327645071 Alan C -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”
Picked up an Apple Air I pad and am having no luck downloading images (jpegs) with the Apple Lightning to SD camera reader. Yes, unmodified DNG or jpeg. If I want to put images from e.g. Lightroom onto the iPad, I Airdrop to the iPad or first put them into iCloud and load from there into Photos. An alternate would be to put LR Mobile onto the iPad, synch from PS or LR to the Adobe cloud. And they’ll appear on LR Mobile. Once in LR mobile on the iPad, they can be exported to Photos if you need to for some reason. But generally I do not try to use SD cards as a transfer media. With the new iPadOS coming “real soon”, that sort of transfer should be much more feasible, but I think the new OS won’t be working on the Air, Air 2 is the oldest as I recall. stan > On Aug 15, 2019, at 4:32 PM, Ken Waller wrote: > > Thanks Stan. I think you might be able to do what you want under iOS13 when it gets here in September (?) but I am not sure. Right now, to move photos from my iPhone I Airdrop or email. Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”
The easiest way I've found to move photos and other files between an iPhone/iPad and a PC is with an iXpand flash drive - basically an updated version of sneaker-net. Lightning adapter on one end and USB on the other. The app from Sandisk is free for iOS. https://tinyurl.com/y3mj35fm A 128 gig version will set you back about $44 and a 32 gig version is 20 bucks less. -p On 8/15/2019 5:30 PM, Ken Waller wrote: That limitation sure lessens the value not only of the reader but also the iPad. Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”
Seems an awfully complicated way to connect an iPhone to the internet. The adapter dongle is designed to allow USB peripherals (cameras, keyboards, etc) to send data to the iPhone, not the iPhone to the net. To do what you want, without a jump through WiFi and the cloud, I’d buy a wired hard drive and file transfer device to take them off the iPhone and then connect that to the NAS through your desktop computer to move them there. Easier and more reliable is to just use Dropbox or Apple’s Cloud to do the job, which is what I use unless I just connect the iPhone to my computer and transfer all the files to it (or a NAS) using LR or any image transfer app on the desktop system. I don’t run Windows systems so I’m not sure of the names of such apps there, but I know Apple does supply one FoC. The basic msg is that there’s no native app that knows how to output files to external storage arbitrarily. Next iOS there will be. So at present you need an app that knows how to move the data you want to move to a particular destination. I have a similar question, but going the other way. I have an iPhone that I connect to the internet using a "Lightning to Camera Adapter" (USB) [powered by the wall wart] connected to a USB to Ethernet adapter and a cable to the Router. Does the iPhone have a command similar to "Net Use" so I can offload photos from the phone to my NAS box? I don't want to have to put them up in the iCloud and then download them again to get them on my local system. I'm at whatever version of iOS that released last night. Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”
I see it neither as feature nor flaw. iOS devices are not generalized, all purpose computers, at least not until the next iOS (and iPadOS) ships. They were designed first for wireless communications with personal security, all else is second to that. Judging them by the standards of general purpose computing devices when it come to file management isn’t really sensible until iOS becomes appropriately generalized and supports arbitrary file IO like those computers are designed to. Use the camera adapter to connect directly to a USB hard-drive? Or I can connect the iPhone directly to my desktop as a USB device? Ok, I'll search for that and give it a try. If I can get the photos to my desktop, I can get them to the NAS. I can't imagine what the problem is, unless the card is somehow not formatted correctly or the DCIM file structure on it isn't correct. Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”
You’ve heard the comment: “it is a feature, not a flaw.” In this case, the comment fits. The iOS file system makes it very difficult for files to move to/from the device which, at least in principle, makes the device and the information thereon much more secure. stan > On Aug 15, 2019, at 6:30 PM, Ken Waller wrote: > > That limitation sure lessens the value not only of the reader but also the > iPad. > > Also, Apple doesn’t mention this limitation. And we each had earlier versions of the iPad, and never had an issue reading SD cards. I downloaded the latest iOS a few days ago, and I just verified that the SD reader dongle does still work.
