I've had good success using the *ist D TTL with a K macro lens. I use the Pentax AF400T, firing into a sof' shoulder reflector. The exposures are quite good and consistent. I think the reflector makes it a little easier for the TTL to respond accurately. You can see an example here:

Yes, you can use polarizing filters on a DSLR. If you're shooting with an autofocus lens, you'll want to use circular polarizers. You can use a linear polarizer with a manual focus lens but beware of exposure meter confusion. I frequently use a very nice linear BW polarizer with my A 400/5.6,
