The head arrived this morning and I've tried it out with a 300mm Sigma mounted on the D. It's very light and I like the springs -- they help to keep the camera counterbalanced. Setting the camera level is easier than with the pan tilt head I've been using on the big tripod. It fits nicely on

Unfortunately a camera, or even a tripod head level cannot (easily) be used to level the tripod. In theory it's possible, but first one would have to get the camera base and the top of the tripod -- the flat surface which mates with the underside of the head -- in perfect horizontal agreement.
