I am certain Paul will give you a full answer. Here is mine, kind of
second hand. Paul has made a target which I think he can share. You put
it on the floor, you shoot it with your camera angled approximately 45
deg to the floor and once you shoot you correct the AF with in-camera
correction module. By doing so you dial in or effectively produce an
individual correction for each of your lenses, provided you don't have
too many. In case of fast or cranky lenses, such as FA 50/1.4 or zoom
lenses such as Sigma 24-60/2.8 (Sigmas generally being known for AF
imprecision) it can be a difference between lost and made shot.

Now, since they are offering prices to good fathers, I also dialed in
specifically Galia's lenses for K-7. FA 50/1.4 needed minor correction,
DA 21 and FA 100/3.5 did not.

I don't think the variance of autofocus accuracy from one lens to the next is
something that can be fixed with firmware. It's a matter of lens variation
caused by assembly accuracy and perhaps even wear and tear. But I'm pleased
that Pentax provides an easy way to dial in each lens.

It's not really my system. It's pretty much the standard for adjusting
autofocus, and Boris has it right. There are alternatives that are somewhat
easier to use but more difficult to construct, such as a method where the
target is a slope that rises at 45 degrees and the camera is level. The target,
whether on the floor or angled up from the floor has a series of evenly spaced
line and a central target line. I made my target line slightly bolder than the
rest and placed a red dot at its center. After shooting in single center spot
autofocus mode, with the center line as the target, you simply observe the
results and determine if the center line is indeed the sharpest. If not, you
can see if the camera is back-focusing or front-focusing by determining which
line is sharpest. The important part is that you shoot of a tripod when
adjusting and check the focus at wide open apertures. I also check my results
on the computer screen rather than trying to decipher a tiny image on the
camera viewing screen.
Paul

K-5 is crap, pictures at ISO54000 are practically unusable, all the modes have
been made redundant by the dedicated ISO button and program shift, there is no
autofocus on movies, focusing in Live View can be beaten by any super-compact
and some SD cards catch on to something and are difficult to remove. Viewfinder
blackout is so short that you have to check if it has really made an exposure
after each shot and autofocus is so quiet with SDM lenses that there is no
trusting it!

Avoid it if you can!

But seriously after removing all the crap on startup and adjusting settings to
my liking, K-5 is the first Pentax DSLR that gets completely out of my way when
taking pictures. It is a remarkable feat and something that (although
subjective) is the best compliment any camera could get.

It seems (- emphasis) to me that K-7 locks more confidently in low tungsten

Interesting. I find that the K-5 is quicker to lock in and more accurate in all
low light situations. However, I rarely use anything other than SDM lenses. I
have read that the K-5 has problems with screw drive lenses in tungsten light.

Re: K5 has arrived here

2011-02-25 Thread Steven Desjardins
The LV magnified MF is very useful, especially for macro work. The
E-P1 does that and I quickly got used to it for crystals in the lab.

 Hi!

Picked the little bugger up yesterday. Given that I have K7, I did not have
to wait for batteries to charge. Set it up - man, they keep adding options.
Fired off some shots. Presently I have two major impressions:

 1. The shutter action is even softer than that of K7. The stealthiness of K5
 is remarkable.

 2. The AF under plain 60 Watt lamp is more thoughtful than that of K7. I am
not certain as to precision thereof, but it surely takes its time. Noticed
also that under LV it magnifies the area where it is focusing. May be I
don't need split focusing screen for this camera...

Today I am going to dial in my lenses as Paul says and do some shooting
 with the family.

Last but absolutely not least, K7 has officially been passed to Galia. I
changed the owner name in the settings and she smiled broadly when I showed
her that K7 was now hers.

 Boris

P.S. Pricewise, in shekels I paid for K5 less than I paid for either K10D or
 K7.

I like it. My home town in Massachusetts is an old mill town. The
skyline was spotted with these 200 ft brick chimneys (like this:

these have been converted to cell towers. The locals were oddly
reluctant to have them taken down so it's a good solution.

P.S. Pricewise, in shekels I paid for K5 less than I paid for either K10D or
 K7.

I am certain Paul will give you a full answer. Here is mine, kind of second
hand. Paul has made a target which I think he can share. You put it on the
floor, you shoot it with your camera angled approximately 45 deg to the
floor and once you shoot you correct the AF with in-camera correction
module. By doing so you dial in or effectively produce an individual
correction for each of your lenses, provided you don't have too many. In
case of fast or cranky lenses, such as FA 50/1.4 or zoom lenses such as
Sigma 24-60/2.8 (Sigmas generally being known for AF imprecision) it can be
a difference between lost and made shot.

Now, since they are offering prices to good fathers, I also dialed in
specifically Galia's lenses for K-7. FA 50/1.4 needed minor correction, DA
21 and FA 100/3.5 did not.

It's not really my system. It's pretty much the standard for adjusting
autofocus, and Boris has it right. There are alternatives that are somewhat
easier to use but more difficult to construct, such as a method where the
target is a slope that rises at 45 degrees and the camera is level. The
target, whether on the floor or angled up from the floor has a series of
evenly spaced line and a central target line. I made my target line slightly
bolder than the rest and placed a red dot at its center. After shooting in
single center spot autofocus mode, with the center line as the target, you
simply observe the results and determine if the center line is indeed the
sharpest. If not, you can see if the camera is back-focusing or
front-focusing by determining which line is sharpest. The important part is
that you shoot of a tripod when adjusting and check the focus at wide open
apertures. I also check my results on the computer screen rather than trying
to decipher a tiny image on the camera viewing screen.

RE: Setting Time on the K-x (EXACTLY) ???

2011-02-25 Thread John Sessoms

From: Darren Addy

I've never noticed this before but my clock is off by 6-1/2 minutes. I
know that the ISS was closest to me last night at 18:59:55 so I wanted
to concentrate on frames shot around that time. Looking at the EXIF I
noticed that I was off. I can only assume that the clock I set it by
was fast and I didn't think about the importance of accuracy.

I figured I could calculate the offset, so went into the menus and
noticed (for the first time) that you can't set the seconds. So I'm
assuming that to set it correctly you select the minute ahead of the
one you are calibrating to and hit OK right as it hits that exact
minute. The time input doesn't seem to change with the clock when you
are in the menus, so I think this is the correct procedure. I used the
U.S. Navel Observatory Simple Time:
http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/simpletime.html

It might not have been off when you originally set it.

I have noticed that the clocks in the cameras do not keep accurate time.
Mine all seem to lose time (lag behind).

You have to occasionally check and reset them. Otherwise the error can
grow significantly.

Re: OT: Good Lightroom 3 book?

2011-02-25 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I find that the available books are a little difficult and slow for
newcomers to learn from. Lightroom is a very interactive application,
it's easier to get the base knowledge about using it by seeing it in
use. Tutorial videos are a better way to get rolling, then any of
Martin Evening, Scott Kelby, Mikaal Aalund, etc books work well as
reference and additional depth.

Luminous Landscape has a good tutorial video set for $50. I think
they're download only, they don't ship media, but you download them
and can go over each one as many times as needed to learn it. Don't
need to be online except to download the files.

i _am_ using Thunderbird; i had noticed in passing that in Thunderbird
/slashes/ make italics, but only when in the HTML view, and Tbird
sometimes fails to terminate the italics correctly; but i more often use
the plain text view; nonetheless by mentioning this you literally made
me rethink my old-school assumption that the _underscore_ was the best
way to indicate italics in plain text; each has its plusses --
/slashes/ are a better mnemonic for italics, but underlining (kin to
underscores, but can't be done in plain text) was the equivalent to
italics during the reign of the typewriter

I'm using Thunderbird as well, and when reading in plain text view the
/italics/, the _underscores_ and the *bold* all show up.

They don't show up in the composition window when you're writing, and
I'd never noticed before the quoted text doesn't show them either.

Now I'll have to look to see if the quoted /italics/, _underscores_
and *bold* show up in the plain text view when reading.

Well, what I did was adjust my Sigma 24-60 at 60 mm and check it at 24
mm. Due to difference in DOF, 60 mm focusing precision is more important

moment Pentax firmware does not allow multiple correction settings for
the same lens which might have come in handy here.

easy to construct: i've used a yardstick leaned against a wall, though
only to check lenses, since my k200d doesn't have a focus correction feature

i guess a yardstick on the ground would be a little easier as i could
raise the tripod to a comfortable height

yeah, we have similar examples. One I've seen several is an
assimilated Redwood tree. Next time in in that area I'll snap it.

We have one in the area that's made to like a big pine tree, except that
it towers above the rest of the trees around it.

Might make a PUG theme for next year.

Add to that it shouldn't LOOK like a camera bag so as not to encourage

I'm still looking.

M theory allows for pocket universes. They don't come in canvas, however. Yet.

actually, I didn't. I just said they were unnecessary. I don't go around
trying to stop people exercising their freedom to be barking mad, that would
be illiberal.

Did she know she was getting it? Daddy gets big points for that one.
It's a nice camera for a kid, but she seems to really know how to use
a DSLR.

 Boris

P.S. Pricewise, in shekels I paid for K5 less than I paid for either K10D or
 K7.
