the training continued on their Clipper 68's. The 68's also raced
around the world 4 times and I took part in leg 6 of the 2011-2012
race on the Gold Coast sponsored boat, from Qingdao to San Francisco
in March (2012).

I made a video if you /really/ want to see it, but it's not up to
Cotty's standards and too long (~6min) - really need to edit that down
further.

(The 68's have since been replaced by a fleet of 12 (I think) Clipper
70's which are currently making their way around in the 2013-2014 race

That's really interesting - I'll find out and get back to you!

Do I understand you correctly, Bob, that in fact there is a cost/benefit
consideration here? I mean - in real life, not some idealized world.

No, you don't. I say that you should not put yourself in the position of a
victim, and that standing up for yourself may have a cost, but you should pay
it. In the case of say women being told not to go out after dark, this was
resolved, at least in London in the 80s, by a movement called Reclaim the
Streets, in which people banded together do exactly that. So refusing to be a
victim does not have to be something one does on one's own at huge personal
risk, but something that people join together to do.

This way you can be both right and wise.

I went to a boarding school from the age of 11 to 18. In the first week the
older boys tried to bully me and the other new boys. I had conscientiously read
my Billy Bunter books before starting school, so I knew the correct protocols.
I joined together with one or two of the other boys and we beat up one of the
bullies and threw him into a rose bush. We then took a one-off punishment
beating, but were never bullied after that. Some of the other new boys
automatically adopted a victim position, were bullied forever more and had a
bloody miserable time.

Ricoh/Pentax's 12 Days 12 Deals - Some thoughts

2013-12-10 Thread John Celio
I recall the deal on the K-5 IIs making a splash here, but no one's
mentioned it since. Ricoh has been offering some pretty good deals on
Pentax stuff (plus the Ricoh Theta, which I am intrigued by but have
yet to look into): http://www.us.ricoh-imaging.com/12days12deals. I've
bought two so far.

I ordered a WG-3 GPS today, and the DA 50-200 WR I ordered last week
should be here tomorrow. I've never seen a manufacturer sell stuff so
cheaply through their own store before. They've been cheaper than even
Amazon. I would have gotten a Q7, too, if I felt like I could justify
it right now. Maybe next year

That reminds me: If anyone wants an original DA 50-200 for cheap, mine
will be available when the WR version shows up. It's in good shape, so
just make an offer.

Anyway, part of the reason I bring this up is because it makes me
wonder if Ricoh is trying to move its inventory of older Pentax gear
before unleashing new stuff in the spring. For instance, the lens
deals they offered were all on older models (no HD models or recent
releases), and I'd bet the WG-3 deal today is so cheap because they
want to move the last of the Optio line before rebranding PS cameras
as Ricohs.

Kinda makes me curious what may be coming down the pipeline.

I've printed the same print (landscape) on three different papers, I and others

Not sure if it is a lack of appropriate vocabulary or lack of a discerning eye.

Re: fanning the flames

2013-12-10 Thread Boris Liberman
I think I see what you're saying. Well, on one hand it makes sense
because to establish the point of whether we're hardwired or not would
have great influence on how this conversation would develop.

On the other hand, Frank, again, if I understand you correctly, you say
that the sexualization of the woman's body (or parts thereof) is
effectively made by conscious choice or is result of how modern society
treats women, which as you say has nothing to do with hardwiring or
whatever animal past we may have.

This may be true but just like Paul's appeal to hardwiring, it seems to
me it would require some reference. That's why I said what I said before.

Again, I meant no disrespect to either of you, none whatsoever.

As for your coming to Israel. I haven't seen such a behavior in other
countries, although I couldn't say that I visited many or spent long
enough time in those I happened to visit. Consider this example that
happened to me just yesterday in one of the places where we eat lunch at
work.

Normally this place has no waiters - you take your food along the line,
pay by the counter, sit down, eat, leave the place. Your dishes are
taken after you leave.

This specific couple, in fact, the lady of the couple probably placed
some special order and hence it was brought to their table by the guy
who usually collects the dishes from the tables. So the guy politely
approaches the lady, she smiles back, he gives her the dish, she totally
removes him from her environment, turning back to her companion.
However, previously she was given some kind of a token to indicate that
she's the one to whom the dish had to be brought. So the poor fellow
kindly asks her to give that token back to him. Without looking at him
she picks it up and extends her arm in his general direction. No eye
contact, no nothing. He does not exist as far as her body language goes,
and trust me I watched very closely. He takes the token and leaves.

In my personal way of things, that was very denigrating behavior on her
part. Further, to ever sadder state of affairs, the waiter was black (as
in Ethiopian Jew), she was white (probably Ashkenazi Jew). I sat by the
table next to them.

These things happen not like once a week, but rather lots of times every
day around me. I would very much like to have you witness some of them
in person and then I would very much like to talk with you about these
things, also in person. That's obviously beside great many other things
I would like to show you in my country and themes that I might want to
discuss with you when you come.

I see...

So, to that specific lady involved with FB you would suggest starting a
movement or trying to engage as many people as possible to do exactly
what? Sue FB in court? Boycott FB? Flood FB with content that is 100%
borderline between valid and invalid as far as FB rules go? Try to find
who are the moderators and deal with them personally? Contact mass media
and try to make her story very widely public?

See, Bob, I'm not being sarcastic here - I'm very much interested in
your opinion.

I should point out that your childhood example, although commendable has
few serious, how to put it, points that make it less relevant, here. As
a child you had not much to loose. At worst, although very unpleasant,
you would have ended up being bullied, but that's what you were up
against in the first place. Second - I don't think that it took much
time or effort to find other boys with whom you joined and convince them
to participate in your plan.

In grown up life, you see, the balance is much more delicate. For
example, consider this, Bob, as my age grows, which it does day by day,
I'm becoming more and more subject to professional bullying. I observe
that now on example of my co-workers who are full 10 years older than
me. At age of 50+ it is not going to be easy to find a new job should
one just decide to knock their fist on the table and leave. Thus, your
employer may decide not to raise your salary, not to promote you
upwards, not to send you to workshops, etc.

Of course there're ways to deal with that, but given that as a grown up
you often have a mortgage to pay, kids to educate, life to live, etc,
the cost/benefit consideration which I mentioned early becomes more
complex than that of a child who stands up against his bullies.

For example, if I understand correctly, that lady has some business
involved with her FB exposure, so that to go up against FB could either
make her very famous (as in documentary film famous) or make her life
significantly more miserable (than having her child's photo removed by
FB moderators or robot programs) as far as her business go. Like we say
in Russian - don't saw the tree-branch on which you're sitting.

Ultimately, you're right - the bullies must be stood up against, however
I think you would agree with me that it is not just black or just white
in real grown up life.

Do I understand you correctly, Bob, that in fact there is a
cost/benefit consideration here? I mean - in real life, not some
idealized world.

No, you don't. I say that you should not put yourself in the position
of a victim, and that standing up for yourself may have a cost, but
you should pay it. In the case of say women being told not to go out
after dark, this was resolved, at least in London in the 80s, by a
movement called Reclaim the Streets, in which people banded together
do exactly that. So refusing to be a victim does not have to be
something one does on one's own at huge personal risk, but something
that people join together to do.

This way you can be both right and wise.

I went to a boarding school from the age of 11 to 18. In the first
week the older boys tried to bully me and the other new boys. I had
conscientiously read my Billy Bunter books before starting school, so
I knew the correct protocols. I joined together with one or two of
the other boys and we beat up one of the bullies and threw him into a
rose bush. We then took a one-off punishment beating, but were never
bullied after that. Some of the other new boys automatically adopted
a victim position, were bullied forever more and had a bloody
miserable time.

I absolutely agree with you, Jostein. It seems to me that this whole
discussion would boil down to some very fundamental notions (such as
nature vs nurture), which cannot be resolved. In fact, the idea that our
society is very diverse as far as approaches to these things go,
probably contributes much to our species success.

To imagine that if all societies will be 100% perfect, women will not be

Thank you Paul,
It is interesting, and I wish I saw it earlier, - 3-4 years ago when I
couldn't find any metallic paper for inkjet printers.
Thanks for the tip, I am looking at that company closer...
Unfortunately, their sample kit of papers is very inconvenient: they
mark the paper on the front side. So, if you want to have it useful, you
have to cut that paper. I don't have a good cutting setup at home,
so, I don't like having any paper cut, only when there is a photo that
is worth extra work.

I've tried this metallic paper:
http://www.atlex.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=CP8511
CP8511
Chrome Pearlescent Metallic Inkjet Paper 8.5x11 - 50 sheets
$39.99

It is not perfect for my taste, but reasonable for some applications.
The main shortcoming (in my opinion) is that there is not enough
metallicity or metallic brightness in the printed image.

Best,

Igor

I wonder if anybody here has tried any of the papers from the brand/line
 Simply Elegant Metallic ..:
Chrome Gloss, Metallic Pearl, Pure Silver Metallic, Pure Gold Metallic,
 Moonglow Metallic.
And if so, - what is the difference between them in the actual
look (beyond what is in the short description for each of them here:
 http://www.atlex.com/simply-elegant-metallic-sample-pack-8-5-x11-15-sheets.html
 )

 Thank you in advance.

 Igor
