Re: What seems like a stupid K-5 behavior.
the k-5 IIs I have here does the same exact thing. if you turn on the 2s timer, the input for focal length goes away. it will prompt you when you turn on the camera still, but not record it. if you dive into the menu, you see the input option is greyed out. also if you turn off SR entirely, it also stops recording FL in EXIF. I don't know if I would call that a bug exactly, but it would be nice I'm sure for some to see what FL was used in exif. Re: What seems like a stupid K-5 behavior.
So, what does it do when you switch back from using the wireless remote? Does it remember to turn anti-shake back on remember the previously input focal length? Thanks, Bob. We have a nice variety of flowers around our place this time of year. I'm getting a bit frustrated with the PPG. It seems all my flower images are approved by the voters, even ones that are nice, but nothing really special. On the other hand, many of my street images and other shots I think are much stronger and more unique (like track lighting and my rainbow birdhouse surrounded by dogwood blossoms) are rejected. Some of my flower macros that drew no comments as PESOs are approved, where some of my other, more inventive images, that received positive comments here, get rejected. I guess I'm just a flower boy. The reason why our average age before we die has increased from 50 to 80 in the past couple of hundred years is because we have done a very good job in western societies of suppressing infant and child mortality, not because we are necessarily living a lot longer. Humans have always placed a higher importance on the lives of their own tribe and less importance on the lives of other tribes, which is why western countries (North America in particular) will throw almost half of it's food in the trash, but allow million to die in famines in other parts of the world. Re: What seems like a stupid K-5 behavior.
It stores a value. If you turn off SR and turn the camera off and then turn it back on, it does not prompt you for FL. If you go into the menu where you can manually dial in the value, you will see it is greyed out. If you turn on SR again, it will be a valid menu option once again that you can dive into and change the value. It just reverts to whatever value was input previously. If you swap lenses without turning off the camera, that value will just stay in there because there isn't any communication with the lens at all other than maybe aperture if it is an A lens. Does that make sense? The camera only really cares about FL on manual lenses when SR is turned on. If you're doing long exposures and not using a long lens, you could probably get away without mirror lockup or a timer if you used a remote. Just like the good old days. The mirror is very well dampened its been proven that during excessively long exposures (over 1s) mirror lockup has no impact at all. One that got away
I saw in the local news this morning that NASA was launching a supply rocket to the ISS from Wallops Island, VA that was supposed to be visible from here in Raleigh. It was supposed to be visible from about 2 minutes after the launch time until the first stage of the rocket burned out at 3 minutes. All I expected to see was a bright dot of light climbing up from the horizon. I was in the right kind of elevated place before the designated time, with a clear unobstructed view of the northeast horizon (as per the directions in the news story) I had my camera ready. The skies were mostly clear - a few cumulus clouds, but not enough to block the horizon. I gave it plenty of time. I was there 5 minutes ahead of time waited until 10 minutes after the launch time. Still, I didn't see it, and obviously I didn't get any photos. Anyone else catch this? -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for. Re: Today morning, just recently
From what I see the problem there is a bit more complicated than simply controlling Hamas (even if that were possible). My heart goes out to all Israelis who live with the fear of rocket and other terrorist attacks. I can't imagine what that's like. There is no justification for what Hamas does: it is criminal. HOWEVER, Israel's response is completely out of proportion, heavy-handed and seems bound to be ineffectual or worse. Here's what I know: Hamas is prepared to sacrifice innocent Palestinian civilians to win world opinion and sympathy. The government and military of Israel is prepared to sacrifice innocent Palestinian civilians for all sorts of reasons that are probably best discussed elsewhere. As of last night 154 Palestinians and 0 Israelis have died since this latest escalation started. Each side blames the other and claims total justification for their actions. Someone needs to step up and choose peace. No one seems prepared to do that. Accordingly this horrendous situation. Will continue. Oh, Ann, it has nothing to do with geography. It is merely a progress of Gazans in terms of rocketry... Previously their rockets couldn't fly as far, not they fly twice as far, all the way to Haifa. Re: Need help choosing from a pair of photos
Thanks a lot to everybody for the input! It looks like most people (almost everybody) prefer off-center placement. A tighter vs. loose crops preference is different for different people. These photos are a part of a larger gallery from the botanical garden of Moscow State University, which I visited during the first week of July, while attending a large international conference on magnetism. I've been told that all plants in this garden are from various parts of Russia (or possibly former Soviet Union as it was planted first in 1950s [at this, new location]). I'll be finalizing that gallery soon. Alan: in response to your question: BTW, water lilies are tropical flowers - are those growing in a controlled environment? In this particular case, to my surprise, I've been told that at this botanical garden, they remove these lilies for the winter. The reason I was surprised is that in Urals (Chelyabinsk Region, about 55N, 61E), where I grew up, the climate is even harsher (what is called ultracontinental climate, which means very wide range of temperatures with some extremes in summer and in winter). There, the same water lilies live naturally in lakes. So, they are not really tropical flowers. Re: Today morning, just recently
You have expanded upon what I was trying to say most eloquently, Boris. Finger-pointing is not what I intended; quite the opposite. I believe that most civilians on both sides of this divide only want peace, safety and security. Of course you, living in the midst of the tumult, have a unique first-hand perspective on what's happening. Of course being a friend, my personal concern is the safety of you and yours. Stay safe and take care. All the best, frank On 13 July, 2014 2:35:27 PM EDT, Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com wrote: Please, let us absolutely not engage on this kind of discussions on the list. PESO - The Hoopster
Colleen works at the local health food store. She runs a little hula hoop thing on the side. Now in the 60's when I was a kid they were all the rage but I couldn't keep one going for more than 5 seconds before it spiraled to the ground. No matter, it was girl's stuff. So Colleen had a little hoop jam last night and within five minutes I'm hooping like a pro. Okay, not a pro but I could keep it going indefinitely. A tribute to her skills as a teacher to be sure. She was a bit more advanced but as you can see it's all fun: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2014/07/the-hoopster.html?m=1 And a really good workout, too! Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome. Dear Boris, I am aware of the situation. I thought about you and your family. I just happen to visit my computer less frequently these days. Although, of different sort and uncomparable to yours, my country seems to be on the verge of some serious disorder. I just fail to find a proper way to express myself... Remaining calm was something I thought I was good at until this age. It may not be any longer. I hate watching this building up of anger... everywhere. Re: GESO - More Stack Focused Dragonflies
Thanks, Stan! A critical difference with the first shot is that there was some actual empty space between the dragonfly and the background. The ones perches on grass, especially the orange male, had grass stalks all very close to them. I very much overshoot - I just put the K-3 onto fast continuous shooting, focused till everything I wanted sharp was blurry, hit the shutter, and slowly refocused. After each sequent I put my hand over the lens and took a shot to know that sequence was complete, and then did it again. Since this was in the field and the dragonflies do move around, I took several shots. I then pulled the raw files into Photoshop, identified the range of shots that covered the area I wanted in focus, and did a batch adjustment on them in Camera Raw and opened them up. I save the TIFFs, use bridge to load them all back into PS as layers within a single image. After that it is just two commands - Auto Align Layers and Auto Blend For Sharpness. Bada-bing-bada-boom... Sometimes the dragonfly would twitch part of its body - like turn its head or wave a leg - and that image would mess up the stacking process. Sometimes that images can be deleted and the stack will work, often it makes the whole stack useless. It would clearly be better to do this with a focusing rail but I'm working in the field, with moving subjects. I just use a monopod and try to hold things steady. Re: GESO - More Stack Focused Dragonflies
HI Ann - Thanks for looking! I think Stan has come up with some good resources. I tried Zerene Stacker and CombineZP, but when I learned that Photoshop had stacking tools built in I just used it. I did not know what I was doing when I tried Zerene Stacker, so I can't voice an opinion on it. CombineZP is very effective and has worked better than Photoshop in some cases, and it is free. The interface is rather crude (reminds me of some WIndows 3.1 programs) but with some patience and trial and error it is not hard to figure out. It seems to me this model has great body lines (and not just because she’s thin) that evoke a fun spirited character. I liked very much the very first shot you posted of her on the chair. I have absolutely no formal training in studio portraiture, and the 2 times I tried it I was total crap! But I have thought about my experiences in a general sense and since you’ve been posting nudes on PDML I’ve wondered how I would photograph nudes. I think I’d borrow from the principles of dance—choosing models that had the “body lines” I was looking for and pose accordingly (not in dance poses, mind you—that’s not what I mean). It seems to me this model has great body lines (and not just because she’s thin) that evoke a fun spirited character. I liked very much the very first shot you posted of her on the chair. To me there was such great expression in her face—her eyes—and her body position. I think you have a model here with a lot of potential. It is just such a project that I am working on that led me to hire this model to work with. The work isn't ready for showing yet -- it's in progress now. The images I've shown so far are taken from a mini session at the end of my project session where I simply indulged my love of posed portraits. Did you see the previous shot I posted called Bronze? That's an outtake from the first session, and is all I'll say about that for now. http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2014-July/380548.html Thanks, Christine! BTW, I think you have a model here with a lot of potential. Indeed.
