Actually it seems that Human's haven't evolved in about 10,000 years. Actual
evolution requires death before reproduction, and even the most primitive
societies can keep all but the most sickly of their members alive long enough

If that were true it would just mean that it's selecting for things other than
the ability to survive long enough to reproduce. It's an obvious fact that not
all people who are physically to reproduce do so, so selection is working on
something other than the mere fact of survival to breeding age.

However, I'm not convinced that your statements are true - why do you think we
haven't evolved?

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/sep/10/david-attenborough-humans-still-evolving

Furthermore, the idea that all societies can keep everyone alive long enough is
just nonsense. Look back over the last 100 years and count the war dead, the
people who've died in famines, and the people, the children, who are dying now
from preventable causes.

on topic: when i had to replace my K-5, i bought … another K-5; a
low-mileage used one in beautiful shape with a few extras, $400 shipped

if i had thought it worth the money i could have afforded a K-5II or IIs, or
even a K-3, but the more i tossed it around i realized the incremental value
was not there (for me) for the cost; the IQ of the II should be the same,
 period, the IIs, only a tiny bit better in sharpness, but otherwise same;
this tiny bit is probably dwarfed by my own faults and practices, though it
might make a difference on macro shots; auto-focus improvements aren't a
major value for me as i am most often using manual focus

the K-3, as i understand it, gives a larger amount of raw picture data,
which might help when cropping, but does not improve significantly in
dynamic range or low light; it may be a better build and nicer to operate,
 but at a price

so i decided (for me) there was a significant opportunity cost to paying
more for just a little bit better camera

the k-5 IIs I have here does the same exact thing. if you turn on the
2s timer, the input for focal length goes away. it will prompt you
when you turn on the camera still, but not record it. if you dive into
the menu, you see the input option is greyed out. also if you turn off
SR entirely, it also stops recording FL in EXIF. I don't know if I
would call that a bug exactly, but it would be nice I'm sure for some
to see what FL was used in exif.

we return home to start our day.

Now comes the emotional part. It's been about a week since this has started.

Re: What seems like a stupid K-5 behavior.

2014-07-13 Thread John

So, what does it do when you switch back from using the wireless remote?

Does it remember to turn anti-shake back on remember the previously
input focal length? Or do you have to enter the focal length again?

On a similar note, I was using my K-3 yesterday with an A100/2.8 macro
and it didn't prompt me to enter the focal length when I put the lens on
the camera. I wasn't using the wireless remote since there's no place to
store it in the battery grip.

I think this still works with the most recent versions of Firefox:

http://www.robertstech.com/blog/?p=57

Step 1:

In the Address Bar of Firefox, type the words “about:config” and then
press the Enter key. This brings up the built-in customization page
where you can configure myriad options in Firefox. To reach any one of
them you can either scroll through the entire list or, if you know
what you’re looking for, start typing it into the Filter box above the
list.

Type 'browser.link' in the filter barStep 2:

Type “browser.link” into the Filter box. This will bring up three
results. The one we want is the middle one shown in the image at
right: “browser.link.open_newwindow”.

Double-click on “browser.link.open_newwindow” and you’ll get the
dialog box shown below, with the default value of “3? showing.

Type '1' in the dialog boxStep 3:

In the dialog box, replace the default value of “3? with “1? and click
OK.

You’re done! Now every link will open in the same tab unless you
decide otherwise!

(Just in case you’re curious, setting the value to “2? would make
every link open in a new tab.)

Enjoy your new browsing experience.

Go into any old cemetery and look at the percentage of grave markers

Humans have always placed a higher importance on the lives of their own

Re: What seems like a stupid K-5 behavior.

2014-07-13 Thread Zos Xavius
It stores a value. If you turn off SR and turn the camera off and then
turn it back on, it does not prompt you for FL. If you go into the
menu where you can manually dial in the value, you will see it is
greyed out. If you turn on SR again, it will be a valid menu option
once again that you can dive into and change the value. It just
reverts to whatever value was input previously. If you swap lenses
without turning off the camera, that value will just stay in there
because there isn't any communication with the lens at all other than
maybe aperture if it is an A lens. Does that make sense? The camera
only really cares about FL on manual lenses when SR is turned on. If
you're doing long exposures and not using a long lens, you could
probably get away without mirror lockup or a timer if you used a
remote. Just like the good old days. The mirror is very well dampened
its been proven that during excessively long exposures (over 1s)
mirror lockup has no impact at all.

Does it remember to turn anti-shake back on remember the previously

On a similar note, I was using my K-3 yesterday with an A100/2.8 macro
and it didn't prompt me to enter the focal length when I put the lens on
the camera. I wasn't using the wireless remote since there's no place to
store it in the battery grip.

stupid is that the camera stops reporting the input focal length in the
EXIF data. I mean if you input the focal length then put the camera on
a tripod, you probably didn't change lenses.

I think this still works with the most recent versions of Firefox:

http://www.robertstech.com/blog/?p=57

Step 1:

In the Address Bar of Firefox, type the words “about:config” and then
press the Enter key. This brings up the built-in customization page
where you can configure myriad options in Firefox. To reach any one of
them you can either scroll through the entire list or, if you know
what you’re looking for, start typing it into the Filter box above the
list.

Type 'browser.link' in the filter barStep 2:

Type “browser.link” into the Filter box. This will bring up three
results. The one we want is the middle one shown in the image at
right: “browser.link.open_newwindow”.

Double-click on “browser.link.open_newwindow” and you’ll get the
dialog box shown below, with the default value of “3? showing.

Type '1' in the dialog boxStep 3:

In the dialog box, replace the default value of “3? with “1? and click
OK.

You’re done! Now every link will open in the same tab unless you
decide otherwise!

(Just in case you’re curious, setting the value to “2? would make
every link open in a new tab.)

Enjoy your new browsing experience.

One that got away

2014-07-13 Thread John

I saw in the local news this morning that NASA was launching a supply
rocket to the ISS from Wallops Island, VA that was supposed to be
visible from here in Raleigh. It was supposed to be visible from about 2
minutes after the launch time until the first stage of the rocket burned
out at 3 minutes. All I expected to see was a bright dot of light
climbing up from the horizon.

I was in the right kind of elevated place before the designated time,
with a clear unobstructed view of the northeast horizon (as per the
directions in the news story) I had my camera ready. The skies were
mostly clear - a few cumulus clouds, but not enough to block the
horizon. I gave it plenty of time. I was there 5 minutes ahead of time
waited until 10 minutes after the launch time.

Still, I didn't see it, and obviously I didn't get any photos.

Anyone else catch this?

Boris, I think of you every time I hear of yet another escalation in Israel.

The last time we spoke of this off list (several years ago) Hamas rockets
didn't have the range to reach your area.

Please stay safe.

My thoughts to you and your family.

From what I see the problem there is a bit more complicated than simply
controlling Hamas (even if that were possible).

My heart goes out to all Israelis who live with the fear of rocket and other
terrorist attacks. I can't imagine what that's like.

There is no justification for what Hamas does: it is criminal.

HOWEVER, Israel's response is completely out of proportion, heavy-handed and
seems bound to be ineffectual or worse.

Here's what I know:

Hamas is prepared to sacrifice innocent Palestinian civilians to win world
opinion and sympathy.

The government and military of Israel is prepared to sacrifice innocent
Palestinian civilians for all sorts of reasons that are probably best discussed
elsewhere.

As of last night 154 Palestinians and 0 Israelis have died since this latest
escalation started.

Each side blames the other and claims total justification for their actions.

Someone needs to step up and choose peace. No one seems prepared to do that.
Accordingly this horrendous situation. Will continue.

out at 3 minutes.

Oh, Ann, it has nothing to do with geography. It is merely a progress of

Re: Need help choosing from a pair of photos

2014-07-13 Thread Igor Roshchin

Thanks a lot to everybody for the input!
It looks like most people (almost everybody) prefer off-center
placement. A tighter vs. loose crops preference is different for
different people.

These photos are a part of a larger gallery from the botanical garden
of Moscow State University, which I visited during the first week of
July, while attending a large international conference on magnetism.
I've been told that all plants in this garden are from various parts of
Russia (or possibly former Soviet Union as it was planted first in 1950s
[at this, new location]).
I'll be finalizing that gallery soon.

Alan: in response to your question:
BTW, water lilies are tropical flowers - are those growing in a
 controlled environment?

In this particular case, to my surprise, I've been told that at this
botanical garden, they remove these lilies for the winter. The reason
I was surprised is that in Urals (Chelyabinsk Region, about 55N, 61E),
where I grew up, the climate is even harsher (what is called
ultracontinental climate, which means very wide range of temperatures
with some extremes in summer and in winter).
There, the same water lilies live naturally in lakes.
So, they are not really tropical flowers.
I think that even though the lakes freeze, the fact that the water
at the bottom of the lake remains at about +4 degrees C allows
all the vegetation to survive.

I believe that most civilians on both sides of this divide only want peace,

Sorry to hear about your predicament, Boris. Thanks for taking the time to
inform. The current bombardment has reached the news up here, but news don't
travel very well into my brain when on vacation. I've spent the last week at
the cabin; the one you've been to.

Stay well.

Hello.

Below is the statement of the fact. It is not my intent to convey any
emotional sub-text whatsoever. Times are approximate, except the very
first one.

* 5:50 - my alarm clock rings; I swipe it to silence. I decide to linger
in bed a bit longer.
* 6:00 - Julia wakes up and starts her morning routine
* 6:10 - we hear rocket alarm, I jump out of bed. Julia grabs the kids
and heads to the stairway of our house. According to rear command, we
have 90 seconds to get to safety. This gives me time to pull on my
yesterday's t-shirt and trousers. We climb down two stories, it seems
that everyone in our building (4 story, 40 years old) agree that the
area between the first and second floor is the safest. First floor is
one immediately above the ground floor. We're alone as no one is awake
at this time of day.
* 6:15 - we hear some booms. It is interceptor rockets handy work. Anat
is counting.
* 6:20 - I suggest we return. Girls start to stand up as they were
sitting on the floor. We hear another rocket alarm. The girls return to
sitting on the floor.
* 6:25 - We hear some more booms. Anat keeps her count. The doors around

PESO - The Hoopster

2014-07-13 Thread knarf
Colleen works at the local health food store. She runs a little hula hoop thing
on the side.

Now in the 60's when I was a kid they were all the rage but I couldn't keep one
going for more than 5 seconds before it spiraled to the ground. No matter, it
was girl's stuff.

So Colleen had a little hoop jam last night and within five minutes I'm
hooping like a pro.

Okay, not a pro but I could keep it going indefinitely. A tribute to her skills
as a teacher to be sure.

She was a bit more advanced but as you can see it's all fun:

Dear Boris,

I am aware of the situation.
I thought about you and your family.
I just happen to visit my computer less frequently these days.
Although, of different sort and uncomparable to yours, my country
seems to be on the verge of some serious disorder.

I just fail to find a proper way to express myself...
Remaining calm was something I thought I was good at until this age.
It may not be any longer.
I hate watching this building up of anger... everywhere.

Hope you all do well and hope we shall see a better world soon...

Maybe I need to help that luck a bit:)

Ann - the how to put them together afterwards is the easy part. Let clever
software do the work. It can be done in Photoshop I am told, or you can buy
Helicon Focus which does it for you quite nicely. The hard part is getting the
worthwhile composition and then the careful sequence of focus-plane slices

Re: GESO - More Stack Focused Dragonflies

2014-07-13 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Stan! A critical difference with the first shot is that there
was some actual empty space between the dragonfly and the background.
The ones perches on grass, especially the orange male, had grass stalks
all very close to them.

I very much overshoot - I just put the K-3 onto fast continuous
shooting, focused till everything I wanted sharp was blurry, hit the
shutter, and slowly refocused. After each sequent I put my hand over the
lens and took a shot to know that sequence was complete, and then did it
again. Since this was in the field and the dragonflies do move around, I
took several shots. I then pulled the raw files into Photoshop,
identified the range of shots that covered the area I wanted in focus,
and did a batch adjustment on them in Camera Raw and opened them up. I
save the TIFFs, use bridge to load them all back into PS as layers
within a single image. After that it is just two commands - Auto Align
Layers and Auto Blend For Sharpness. Bada-bing-bada-boom...

Sometimes the dragonfly would twitch part of its body - like turn its
head or wave a leg - and that image would mess up the stacking process.
Sometimes that images can be deleted and the stack will work, often it
makes the whole stack useless.

It would clearly be better to do this with a focusing rail but I'm
working in the field, with moving subjects. I just use a monopod and try
to hold things steady.

HI Ann -

Thanks for looking!

I think Stan has come up with some good resources. I tried Zerene
Stacker and CombineZP, but when I learned that Photoshop had stacking
tools built in I just used it. I did not know what I was doing when I
tried Zerene Stacker, so I can't voice an opinion on it. CombineZP is
very effective and has worked better than Photoshop in some cases, and
it is free. The interface is rather crude (reminds me of some WIndows
3.1 programs) but with some patience and trial and error it is not hard
to figure out.
