Lovely flower, perfectly sharp, colors look perfect.

One quibble and a couple of questions:
To my eye, it would probably look better if most of the dead space to
the right was cropped so that the flower was facing into the frame. That
would put the tip of the stamen(? pistil?) at about the upper right one
thirds composition point.

Could you boost the "white" slider just a titch, or maybe the exposure
and contrast to make the high tones pop a bit more without losing
detail, or brightening up the dark background too much?

How would this look in black and white, particularly if you brought the
green channel down a bit? You might get some nice levels of tonality
with the stamen/pistil bright, the petals a light grey and the
background dark grey/black. Or, it might look like crap.

No - definitely lichen. I wondered about that myself - I'd certainly
not come across anything like this in my travels, but a bit of online
searching turned up some similar lichens.

If you're referring to the colours, yes they are real - enhanced by the
late afternoon light.

Interesting. The ones with the blue top were the "warm up" set, where
we were just getting to learn about working with each other. I ended up
pulling back the shadecloth under my plastic sheeting after that set to

Thanks Ann, Larry, Paul, Jack, Brian!

The Hill Country area of TX has many old time buildings and towns like
this. Some still have bullet holes on the walls where shootouts
occurred. Its slowly disappearing however: I took a picture of a
gorgeous old double door once at the entrance of what may have been an
inn or saloon. That is gone now, replaced by a modern door and the
place appears to be some retail shop now. Too sad.

I'll see if I can dig out the door pic.

Peso garter snake with Irving

2016-09-21 Thread Larry Colen
When Sara and I were heading up to the bridge yesterday to take photos,
I saw the garter snake chilling on the shoulder of the road. I stuck him
in my cargo pocket to use as a prop and to help him retain his three
dimensional qualities. And, yes, the obligatory comments about the
snake in my trousers were made.
I guess he liked the warmth, because he was totally content to just hang
out there. After going through the photos for Sara, and having dinner,
before I let him go, I posed him for photos with Irving.
Long story short, my sister found Irving when she was working on a
cattle drive many years ago and brought him home for me. I think that as
a background he nearly works for making such a friendly and mellow
little snake look almost menacing.

Re: Peso-Colorado Fall

2016-09-21 Thread Jack Davis
Yes, I see the array of images and note they're identified as "birch."
Guess I can only offer another result of my asking Google to identify the
distinction between them.
"Birch trees and aspen trees have a similar appearance, but possess significant
differences,
specifically in their leaves, buds, bark and abilities to tolerate extreme
climates.
Additionally, while aspen trees are found across the country, birch trees are
primarily found
only in the eastern United States and areas of Canada.
The most visible difference between the trees is the bark. Aspen trees have
white bark
while birch back can be gray, grayish white, red or black.
Additionally, horizontal markings mar the surface of the birch trees while
aspen typically
only show knots or scars."

I'll leave it there Igor. I don't have the ability to email you this info other
than
my picking it out one finger at a time.
If this information is wrong, blame Google and "Garden Guides." :-)

Jack, sorry, but I think you just didn't ask Google the right way! ;)
Look at the images of birches:

https://goo.gl/HCJ68O

Google for images for "American aspen" and for "European aspen" (or
Eurasian aspen") - or look in Wikipedia.

American aspen (actually two kinds could be behind that common name)
is indeed very white, similar to birch.
Birch is also white. And I grew up with birches surrounding me. :-)

European/Eurasian aspen is greyish (with a greenish tint).

Sorry, I have to run, don't have time to find the links for those.

Cheers,

Igor

Re: K-1 Sports Photography and Kids Football

2016-09-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
Because I was shooting TA mode and had max ISO set at 6400. Needed a 1000th
shutter speed to freeze action, so wide open I was almost two stops under.
Could have changed ISO to 20,000 or so but experience tells me the result will
be the same if I just push in conversion. Plus I slowed down the shutter a
bunch and got below 6400 ISO for a few shots of static subjects.

I don't think the Pentax cameras are bad at sports photography but
possibly thelens choices come into play. I don't have anything with an
SDM type focus motor other than my Sigma 17-70 which focuses quite
fast, my consumer lenses, the DA F 50-200 and 55-300 being screw focus
tend to focus slower and hunt, me thinks that could be the concern.??

Nice shots BTW

RE: OT Just poking my head in the virtual door

2016-09-21 Thread John Coyle
Yes, Ryan is prolific on a closed group, and Tan tends to unburden herself from
time to time! Don't
know where she finds the time to work, but then that was always her way - run
all day and half the

John

A friend needed some photos for her website. However, we didn't stick
strictly with business and did some fun shots too. This one should be
safe for work.
