Gertrude is a lot easier to say than "that mother turkey who has two children

neighborhood".

Thanks. We were incredibly lucky with the lack of wind. Cal Fire was
stretched incredibly thin, had very few resources they could spare us, and the
smoke was so thick they couldn't get air support. I saw a report that if the
fire reached downtown Boulder Creek, Cal Fire was just going to abandon the
whole San Lorenzo Valley and use the resources on much more densely populated
areas under threat. The fire seems to have come within a few hundred meters of
that point.

You folks may find this damage assesment map of interest
https://www.santacruzcounty.us/FireRecovery/DamageAssessmentMap.aspx

They seem to only be marking houses safe in areas that were under specific
threat.

I live on Hwy 9 a bit south of Glen Arbor, between Brackney and El Solyo on the
logical east, geographic north side of hwy 9

the map shows the fire boundary as getting to about 3/4 mile, a bit over a km
from my house.

Re: PESO - In the style of Monet

2020-08-26 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thanks to all for looking!

Larry, Dan, and Paul, - thank you for your comments!

Larry, thank you for the your suggestions.

The loss of the detail was intentional - as a step toward
"impressionistic" style, - to convey the mood but not necessarily the
anatomy of the flower. For that reason, I also didn't clone out that grass
stem on the right (which I've removed on the "realistic" version), - it
contributes to the color of the image overall, balancing out the flower.

It is not that I am big fan of Monet; rather, I thought with this photo I
could achieve a similar effect, and to convey the mood I liked.

Cheers,

Igor

Yes, that photo was about the rendering.

Here are some analogies for this and the more "original" rendering
that were going through my mind, while I was experimenting with that photo.

You can compare Monet's water lillies to Isaac Levitan's:
https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/438008
https://www.wikiart.org/en/isaac-levitan/water-lilies-nenuphar-1895

Here is my photo in the style of Isaac Levitan ("realism"):
http://42graphy.org/misc/2020-08-parks/BellFlower_IR04495.jpg
and the "Monetized" version posted earlier ("impressionism"):
http://42graphy.org/misc/2020-08-parks/ArtDrawing-Bell_IR04495.jpg

All comments on both versions are welcome.

I actually like the “realistic” version better
http://42graphy.org/misc/2020-08-parks/BellFlower_IR04495.jpg

To me, the monetized one just looks like you’ve blown out color channels and
lost all detail.

The monetized version does have the advantage of the background is less
distracting.

I’d probably start with the original, crop in tight on the flower, drop the
exposure one or 2 dB. But it’s not my photo, you should do to it what makes
you happy.

What we get here all comes from factory farming with thousands of them

John. the building is old and the apartments are too. I wrote a follow
up - the blondes have ben seen roaming the neigborhood maskless..  They
are hanging out on the fairly low fireescape without masks.  These are
rich families kids.. they are not bundled 5 in a room.  The building
isn't owned by NYU.  The aparments are rentals.  THe fireescape is not a
good place to hang out under anycircumstance.. 5 of them on one level?

They are supposed to be social distancing or have done so before getting
here.
They are all taking turns taking photos of one another and huddling over
their phones.  But they should not be out on the fire escape for any reason

and we know they have been running around the neighborhood without masks..

Does the University have the whole building & renovated it into a

to house students wherever they can?

They could be social distancing from the rest of the world, but what
would be the point of social distancing from each other if they're all
sleeping in the same apartment, sharing a bathroom & kitchen?

In the image, you have the two outside women striking a pose while the

that the seated women appears to be chimping an image she's already

OT: The Enduring Legacy of the Zealy Daguerreotypes

2020-08-26 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
*I received this email today, and thought someone on the list might be
interested in this:*

You might be thinking, gee, I haven’t heard from Sarah in a while, she must
be taking a long vacation! But that’s not true… inspired by our recent
conversations and gatherings I am working with exceptionally talented
colleagues across the Museum on an update for this course that we will
launch in the fall. I can’t say more just yet, but please stay tuned. I
know you’re going to love it. In the meantime, we’ve gathered a smorgasbord
of videos into a single *Seeing Through Photographs playlist*

on
YouTube. You can scroll through it to find some of your favorites from the
course and from our virtual gatherings this spring and summer.

September will bring with it a whole host of exciting events, most notably
the launch of *Companion Pieces: New Photography 2020*

(we
announced the eight participating artists last week!). Much more on that to
come.

On *Monday, September 14 at 7pm EDT* I will be moderating a virtual
conversation for Aperture between the three editors of an important new
publication: *To Make Their Own Way in the World: The Enduring Legacy of
the Zealy Daguerreotypes*. It’s free and you can *register here*

.

I hope you enjoy these dwindling summer days, and please know how grateful
I am for the STP community and the meaning you bring to our work!

Pete , your nice moddy shot reminds me that - back in March Ralf and I were
comparing notes on our central city neighborhoods.. with similar atmospheres
and thinking how nice it was were it not for the pandemic.. I probably should
have done more documentation than I did.. Just didnt' feel much like shooting

ann

Thanks Ann. Central Melbourne is literally deserted - empty trams
running up & down empty streets. I'd love to get in there, but it's 20km
away, and we're restricted to 5km radius of our home. It'll cost me
$1650 if I venture in...

Apart from (non-Pentax) holiday snaps, I haven't felt like shooting much
either. However I feel this is starting to change a bit. Haven't worked
since March, so I have had time. I've been forcing my self to take 2
photos outside our house each morning, from the same spots. Did this
during our first lockdown, and am continuing it through this one. This
has helped me look for more things to shoot, I think.

Ciao,

Pete
