Re: OT: Backroad Buildings photo book

2021-04-02 Thread John

Burma-Shave signs were fun. And "See Rock City" painted on barn roofs.

Stuckey's and "South of the Border" signs existed BEFORE I-95.

I was lucky my family made a couple of road trips out to California (from NC)
while I was still at home and I got to see Route 66 in 1960 before I-40 replaced
most of it.

We went again in 1964 and by then most of the trip was on Interstates. But they
hadn't completely replaced the old highways.

The 1964 trip was when the Ranger at The Petrified Forest directed my dad to
pull off "where they were building the new highway" (I-40) "and we could pick up
all the petrified wood we wanted" because it was outside of the National Park.

In 1960 we saw the Grand Canyon (even if we only did get to spend an hour before
we had to get back on the road) & the Meteor Crater.

In 1964 we saw the Giant Redwoods & Yosemite, taking California Hwy 120 east
eventually ending up on US 95 in Nevada ... I won 20¢ from a dime slot machine
in the lobby of a Howard Johnson's Restaurant in Las Vegas before the waitress
saw me and FREAKED OUT ... we drove across the Hoover Dam and visited Mesa Verde.

If you are doing the type of photography wher the K-1 shines, then it's
probably the best body for you. I shoot more at the longer focal lengths
than at the wide end (and find 16mm on a crop-factor body to be wide enough),
so for me the larger sensor of the K-1 isn't particularly tempting, especially
since the image quality of even my old K-5 sensor is hard to fault unless I'm
really pushing things.

What I'm looking for is better autofocus (and as fast a frame rate as possible
in the continuous shooting mode). I'm waiting to see what the reviewers have
to say about the new autofocus system, but early reports seem promising.

Can't you charge the battery using the original K-3 or K-3 II chargers? Or for
that matter, since the K-1 uses the same battery, use that charger?

As long as the previous versions of the charger work with it, the lack of the
charger wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

But since my K-3 is an adequate backup for the K-1, I don't NEED to replace it.
And this doesn't appear to offer enough more that I would WANT to replace it.

Plus, if I did need to replace my K-3, the K-3 III doesn't look like it would be

I suspect the idea is that the camera gets plugged in at night and is
supposedly fresh for another day. If you need more than that, buy a battery
and charger.

Re: OT some of you already know..

2021-04-02 Thread John

Question: Do y'all usually have a reaction to the flu shot?

I kind of had a thought that maybe people who feel "flu like symptoms" a day or
so after getting the flu shot would be more prone to having a reaction to the
Covid vaccine.

I've never had a reaction to the flu shot, and I had none to the Covid vaccine
(either shot).

So, I'm kind of wondering about others reaction to the Covid vaccine in relation
to their reaction to the flu shot. Was it the same or did you have a reaction to
one and not the other?

I've been in communication with Frank at GFM. The nature museum and
auditorium are currently under construction and undergoing massive
upgrades, so they aren't available for use. So with no food services
and no place to hold the photo presentations or contest and awards
there's no way they can hold a Nature Photography Weekend. They're
doing a much more low-key event (everything outdoors) in August this
year.

That's what it says in the link.

"Due to COVID-19 and ongoing renovation to the Grandfather Mountain Nature
Museum, the nonprofit nature park’s annual Nature Photography Weekend and Camera
Clinic have been combined into one event for 2021"

Maybe next year it will go back to being separate weekends or maybe the new
format will work well and they'll decide to keep on with it.

But it does say:

"The annual Nature Photography Weekend photo contest will also return."

Will the Doug & Mark show return with it?

If it's in gale-force winds at sub-zero temperatures, I'm not going to
be out there long enough to get even 100 30-second exposures, even with
a second battery being kept warm in my pocket to slip into the battery
grip when the first one gives out. Nor, I hazard to guess, are 99+% of
the potential purchasers of the K3iii. And I don't have to be in my
living room to get more than 100 shots out of a battery - almost all
the shots I've taken in the nearly 50 years since I bought my first
Pentax have been taken in conditions far more conducive to good battery
life than those you mention. Off-hand I can only think of three or four
situations when I was shooting at below zero (Fahrenheit).

I any case, if I do buy myself a K3iii (plus the grip & extra battery)
I'll have four batteries I can use; I believe the D90 batteries that I
bought with my K5 over 10 years ago will work in the K3iii, and the old
battery charger for those batteries will charge the new batteries as well.

So, as I said, I wouldn't envision running out of batteries in a day of
shooting with a K3iii. Heck, I'm not even sure Larry could manage that!

I wonder if some of what they are doing is prepping for when they are the
only game in town if one wants an SLR?

I can see Canon and Sony going 100% mirrorless within a few years.

I think it's been 6 years since Sony last introduced an SLR, they did a
pellicle mirror camera in 2016. I believe everything from them since has
been mirtorless.

History tells me that Canon will drop the EF mount sooner rather than
later. I expect that in 5 years Canon won't be making SLR cameras or lenses.

Nikon will probably keep an SLR in their line up, but I don't anticipate a
lot of new SLR models from them in the future.

There are enough people for whom the EVF is literally a headache that the
SLR market will have customers.

Oh, haha, that's not what I meant, sorry I should have been more clear.

I want to play with some old teles, but that's just as a photo nerd.

As a street photographer, I'd never use a long lens. That's not my thing, I
like to get close. Not saying it cannot or shouldn't be done, I'm sure
someone with more talent can make it work in the street. But most of the
time I see teles used in the street, it is as a crutch, to avoid getting
close.

Are you sure you'd want to do street photography with a 4/300 mm lens
that is about 12 inches long and weighs 5 pounds?

That thing is an all-metal construction and built like the proverbial
battleship.

Having said this, I have a series of concert shots taken with a Zeiss
(Jena) 2.8/180 mm Sonnar adapted to a Fujica 605N. Nice and crisp
pictures with a beautiful bokeh.

Thanks Dan!

Great background info on the Sears cameras, thanks for that. This one lens
I'm pretty sure was made by Tokina, as I found photos of Tokina lenses
(different focal lengths though!) that have the exact same design, colors

Certainly on topic.

For a while, Sears sold an SLR that was a clone of the Asahi Spotmatic .
I'm pretty sure that it was made by Asahi in Japan before it became
comfortable marketing cameras here under its own name. The Spotmatic was
also sold in the US under the Honeywell brand name. My father used a Sears
Spotty for quite a while, and I bought a used Honeywell Spotmatic to back
up the original Asahi Spotmatic that I had purchased new in the Far East in
1966.

My troubles began when I got my first no-line glasses, 15 years ago. I
suddenly needed a correction of +1 for my viewfinders. Given that all my
older cameras didn't have adjustable viewfinders, I had to fit correcion
lenses with all their known disadvantages.

Now, with adjustable viewfinders in modern cameras, it's no longer a
problem but manual focussing has become ever more difficult with my
ageing eyes, so I've mostly stopped using MF lenses which is a little
sad because I really liked some of them.

No-one has ever been able to explain this odd phenomenon with the +1
correction, not even the experts at Essilor, Zeiss and Rodenstock.

I want to take a look at it when I have a chance. It might be just me, but
after a certain age, optical viewfinders stopped working as well as they
used to. I can now see things in an EVF better than even in a really good
OVF like that of my MX. After I realized this, it was a matter of trying
the amazing OVF of the X-T[1,2,3] to not want to look back.

I do miss the K3 sometimes, that was peak DSLR for me, and I did own a KP
for a few years after that.

Glad y'all are getting shots!

I got my first dose of Pfizer yesterday, the first day I qualify (yay!). I
took the day off and drove 1.5hs, two counties away, to an area with
appointments available. Some areas in California have zero slots open,
while in others you can choose your spot in 15' increments. Let's
politicize all the things I guess, yikes.

No side effects other than feeling tired last night, of course I was so
excited about finally getting the vaccine the night before that I barely
slept. The scale of the scientific achievement this represents is amazing.
It makes me extremely sad that some people would rather not participate.

Thanks Dan and Paul.

FWIW, I did add a few more photos that were lobbied for, mostly birds and

Learning from my mistakes

2021-04-02 Thread Larry Colen
After we buried my mom yesterday on my way to visit with the friend who was
like another daughter to Mom I saw what looked like blackbirds hassling a
vulture, which seemed really odd, then I realized that it was a bald eagle. I
pulled over, grabbed the K-3 with a bigma and grabbed some shots. It was set
at Av, ISO 100 f/10, bracketing 0 and -2 stops. Lesson learned: don’t
photograph birds in flight locked at ISO 100.
In theory this would be a good use of user modes, though I could have just gone
to Tav at a higher shutter speed.

On a larger scheme these aren’t great photos, but they are some of my best bald
eagle photos (especially in flight) so far.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157718833806563

As an aside, it occurred to me that bald eagle would actually be a better name
for vultures than birds that look like Edgar Winter with wings.

Re: PESO: Grey Warbler

2021-04-02 Thread Alan C
On the K5 I find the AF works just fine with any of my lenses. Seldom
hunts. I use single point, spot focus. With situations like the Grey
Warbler you are more or less forced into MF - too much extraneous stuff
in the way.

On 02-Apr-21 04:46 AM, David Mann wrote:

I did a bit of testing with the AF this morning, with fairly mixed results. In
my frustration I had thought the K10D had been better with that lens so I tried
it with both cameras. The K5ii is better but both cameras seemed to get
confused at times.

I can't quite put my finger on it just yet - strongly backlit subjects seem to
cause some issues. They'd both focus just fine on darker / lower-contrast
areas of the garden but sometimes they just wouldn't lock, often on bushy trees
with small leaves. It may just be the 3D nature of the subject making things
difficult.

I tested both cameras with just the central point.

The K5ii is definitely better at knowing which direction to move the focus. My
K10D nearly found itself at the bottom of a cliff at Norfolk Island because of
that.

I still wish there was a focus limiter on these long lenses so when they do
hunt it wouldn't take so long.

Cheers,
Dave

Pentax K5ii, FA*400mm f/5.6, both 1/500 at f/9.5 handheld.

This AF with this camera/lens combination is terrible for little birds. The
only way I can get it to lock on anything but the most obvious targets is to
let it auto-select its AF point. In that case it'll focus on any old thing and
it's a lottery as to whether your subject is actually in focus. But at least
it mostly stops hunting.
