my K200D and immediately realize that the lens won't auto focus. I
check the AF/MF switches on both the camera body lens to make sure
that all was in the AF position (or rather, none was in the MF
position). I can manually focus the lens without problems. I have
also cleaned the SDM contacts on the lens, without any success.
Camera focuses fine with the DA 50-135 lens, so I doubt it is a
problem with the SDM on the body.

OTOH, when I place the lens on the *istDS, the lens will auto focus.

I'm guessing that the SDM component on the lens has failed. If that
is the case, will it not revert to the standard screw drive on a body
that has SDM ability?

I have a DA 50-135 which has developed exactly the same problem, namely:
screwdriver focusing works on an *ist DS, but SDM doesn't (on a K10D
GP). You should return that lens.

faster than my 18-250.

I have one of those lenses. It is quite a good zoom, well built and it
focuses really close. Nowadays it is one of my 3 most used lenses, being
the others the Pentax DA 50-135 2.8 and the Sigma EX 28 mm. 1.8
Get sure it is the latest macro version with a 72mm filter ring. The
previous non macro version (67 mm. filter threads) is not as good as
the latest one. The only drawbacks of the 18-50 EX macro are, besides
not being a Pentax lens, distortion at 18 mm. (but all the lenses in the
same category show more or less the same distortion), and the absence of
SDM. As Adam wrote, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is also a good alternative in
this range. If I could afford one, I would buy a Pentax DA 16-50 2.8,
but I'd also keep this Sigma.

the Sigma with HSM/SDM only (which means no AF on K100D or previous

There are two versions of that lens. I have the newest, Sigma DC EX
18-50 2.8 macro. This one has a 72 mm. filter ring, instead of 67 mm. in
the oldest version, and focuses closer.
This lens is a very good one, at least the copy I have. Very good
sharpness, except at 18 2.8, where it has good centre sharpness and
acceptable resolution at the corners of the frame. Barrel distortion at
18 mm. is noticeable when there are straight lines close to the
periphery of the picture, but if it bothers you it can be straightened
easily in postprocessing.

It is solidly built, better than the Tamron. I think that the Tamron
17-50 may have a slight edge in image quality, but not much, however a
lot of users have reported focusing problems.

The old version of the Sigma lens is still in stock in several shops. I
wouldn't buy it, it shows more CA, more vignetting and less sharpness
than the new version.

In Europe, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is about 15% cheaper than the Sigma. I
went for the Sigma because I could buy a LN in box lens for a low price
(200 euros). I also thought of the Pentax 17-70 4.0 SDM, but although it
seems a good lens, it is overpriced IMO. If it had been possible, I
would have bought a Pentax DA 16-50 2.8, but this one was out of my
price range. In fact, I still would choose that lens over the others in
spite of that Photozone review. I don't dispute the findings of the
review, but I am sure that a good sample of the DA 16-50 is a better
lens than my Sigma EX, which is very good as I said previously. In fact,
it is my second Sigma EX series lens, and both have been satisfying
tools (the first was a 70-200 2.8 HSM in Nikon mount).

As you see, nowadays quality controls seem to be a thing of the past.
Nikon users also have reported problems with the Nikkor 17-55 2.8.

I think you have made a good choice with the Tamron you have ordered. If
its AF doesn't work as expected, you can always have it replaced. In
fact, I am also thinking about buying a Tamron 17-50 2.8, although I
would keep the Sigma, then my wife and me would have a fast walk around
zoom for each.

The little bamboo tool is good for cleaning out the old gunk, with a
little alcohol help (naturally). The new foam just packs into the

lives of two Fuji 645s and a Mamiya TLR

I bought a light seals kit from the seller Derby suggests (interslice).
It comes with clear instructions, and you can download some
camera-specific instructions from his web site.
I am not a handyman at all, but I could replace the light seals and the
foam in the mirror chamber of my two MX bodies with no problems
whatsoever. A kit is enough to change the light seals in at least 4 or 5
bodies, in my experience.

russian glass that's not all that bad actually. Any first hand
 experience with these lenses?

I had the MIR MC 47K 20 mm. 2.5 some years ago. It is a metal made lens,
in fact it is very heavy and bulky. It doesn't have a front thread for
filters, though. You have to screw the filters at the back of the lens,
the lens includes four of them. It is sharp, except wide open were it is
good at the centre but soft at the corners. It is multicoated, and it is
quite resistant to flare, although it isn't in the same league as SMC
Pentax lenses. These lens has a hot colour rendition as it is usual in
Russian lenses, at least the ones I have used. In the early examples of
this lens, when you screw a filter it can interfere with the movement of
the mirror in some film camera bodies, I have read that it doesn't
happen in the recent batches of this lens. It doesn't interfere with the
mirror in the DSLR bodies because being APS-C digital format bodies,
their mirrors are smaller. I paid 100 USD for that lens when I bought it
new in 2002.

more at the far end wouldn't hurt either.

What about the ubiquitous F and FA xx-200 or xx-300 mm lenses? Any other

I have had several Pentax telezooms. The F 70-210 mm. 4-5.6 that some
other people recommended is a sharp lens and an excellent choice. I also
had the FA 80-320 mm. 4.5-5.6. It isn't as good as the F 70-210, but it
is a really good performer too.

Now I have the FA* 80-200 mm. 2.8 and the F 80-200 mm. 4.7-5.6. If you
don't want to spend a lot of money, the F or FA 80-200 4.7-5.6 is
surprisingly good for a modest consumer zoom lens. It is very light and
small, doesn't change its length when zooming (it is an internal zoom
lens) and its minimum focus distance is 1.1 metres, and is optically
quite good, not as good the F 70-210 but on par with the FA 80-320. I
recommend the F version because it has a metal lens mount, not plastic
as the FA.

focal lengths. Expecting them to be perfect, even the high end ones, is
putting to much faith on technology.
On the other hand, no AF system is perfect. AF can be convenient, and
even faster than manual focus most of the time, but expecting it to be
right on the money all the time is like thinking that auto exposure
always leads to perfect results.
So, if I were you, I wouldn't put much faith on the results of the
lens-body calibration when they return from Pentax. Surely they will be
able to achieve a better compromise than a user can do at home using
focusing charts, but that's all.
I think you should try Bill's suggestion, it seems to make sense and see
if results are more consistent.

Question about K10D and file numbering

2008-03-18 Thread Carlos Royo
I have just received my K10D GP Edition, and I'm trying to learn how to
use it. In spite of the many configuration possibilities, it seems a
user friendly camera (except the WB adjustment options, I have postponed
looking at them in deep because I was getting a headache).

I have a question to the veteran users of the K10D in the list: in the
DS there is a simple menu option which allows you to reset the file
number count. I don't see a way to do the same in the K10D. I want to
reset the file number because mine is a used camera, and it'll be easier
for me to organize my files if I am able to reset it. Is there a way to
do that? I can't find it in the user manual.

I think that I can answer the question by myself. I have seen that there
is an option called Memory in the Record menu, and there you can reset
the file numbering by unmarking an option called file number or
something like that, and inserting a formatted card. It is a bit
convoluted in my view, but it works.

have received some quite good shots IQ-wise.

It also depends on the mastery of post-processing, which of course is a
 limitless sky.

Thanks Boris and Godfrey for your comments on high ISO and the K10D. I
sometimes use ISO 800 (and sparsely 1600) with the DS when I'm shooting
indoors in order to get enough shutter speed to avoid camera shake.
Results at 800 are really good, the DS shines at that ISO speed, and
they are good at 1600 if correctly exposed like you say. The K10D has
the advantage to allow the user to select the ISO speed in finer steps,
and that sounds attractive to me. I am more and more inclined to get a
K10D because know it can be bought new at very good prices, in fact it
is the biggest bargain in the market now, in my view. It won't be as hot
as the K20D, but I think it may serve me well in the years to come.

 It sounds feasible.

AFAIK, the AF sensors in Pentax SLRs (and other brands too) have a

Need info on K10D AF vs. MZ-S

2008-02-24 Thread Carlos Royo
I am debating if I should buy a K10D (I have an *ist DS) or not. I like
the two dials of the K10D (I miss that feature since I sold my Z-1), SR,
SDM compatibility, weather sealing and the flexibility given by the
configuration options of the K10D. On the other hand, my DS gives me a
clean 1600 ISO and 3200 if needed and uses AA batteries.

Some of you will remember, perhaps, that I also use two MZ-S bodies. The
MZ-S AF performance (SAFOX IV) is much, much better, both in speed and
low light focusing, than the *ist DS AF. Obviously, I would like to know
how the K10D compares to the MZ-S with regard to AF performance.

Hopefully, some of you may have used both cameras (K10D and MZ-S) and
can give me first hand information to help me solve this quandary. I was

I've always found the K10D to be about on par with the DS. It has
better dynamic range at ISO 1600 but a slightly noisier appearance if
you don't get the exposure right on the money. Others have complained

The DS' ISO 3200 setting I only used a couple of times ... it simply
wasn't very usable at all for my work.

lenshood. I will also include a like new B+W 77 mm. UV filter. It's only
got a small blemish: between the first and second element, it has a very
small hazy spot only visible at a certain angle, which doesn't affect
the quality of the pictures in any way. I took it to my usual repair
shop, and they said it wasn't fungus and it wasn't worth opening the
lens to clean such a small spot. They also said that special tooling was
needed to open the lens in case I wanted to have it cleaned and it
should be sent to an official Pentax service centre. I can send photos
of the lens to prospective buyers. Price: now 1200 euros,INCLUDING
shipping expenses.

I am the original owner of this lens.

If you are interested in it, please send a message to my email box, not
the list.

Thank you for your attention.

Oh don't get me wrong - I'm not tempted by those either.

The only two things I could possibly be tempted by are another R-D1, or
 a 36X24 sensor. I wouldn;t have a 5D. I can't afford a 1DsmIII, but
 maybe a 1DsMll used..

Talking about that, I saw in a Spanish web site I usually explore a used
Canon 1 DS (full frame, 11 Mp) a few days ago for what it seemed a good
price (1500 euro). I don't know if it is really a bargain because I
don't know how much they usually cost in the second hand market.

I cannot decide if this photo is worth posting here...
I have mixed feelings. First, I was ready to through this away,
but something keeps taking me back to look at this photo.

It was a quick single opportunity shot, and the highlights were overblown
because I forgot to set flash compensation, and *istDS + AF-500 FTZ
tends to do this at a close range.
On another hand, - sometimes I think that these highlights create a bit
 posterized (as in poster-like) look.

 http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/retro/IMGP0848-2.jpg

As you say, the flash has burnt the foreground, but in my view that
doesn't matter. The timing is excellent and the couple in the background
add a classic photograph air that I like a lot.
To sum it up, I like it a lot, Igor.

FS: MZ-S plus BG-10 grip, MZ-5 plus battery pack

2008-02-18 Thread Carlos Royo
I know I am late (or early, it depends) as it is not Friday, but I hope
you will forgive me.

I have 5 Pentax film SLRs and unfortunately I don't use them a lot
lately, so I want to sell a pair of them.

Firstly, an MZ-S body with very little signs of use, plus the nice BG-10
grip which adds the capability to use AA batteries, plus a second
shutter button, infrared remote receiver, etc. The MZ-S is an excellent
camera, in many ways the best AF SLR Pentax has made. 450 euros plus
shipping expenses.

Secondly, an MZ-5 body in excellent condition, also with little signs of
use, boxed with its original accessories an instruction manual (Spanish),
plus a boxed Fg battery pack, which allows the use of AA batteries, and
an F wired remote release. 100 euros plus shipping expenses.

If someone is interested, please send a message to my e-mail box, not
the list. Thank you for your attention.

purple fringe around tree branches is a big NO.

AFAIK, that's not CA, it is purple fringing. Perhaps it has more to do
with the sensor than with the lens.

I understand you, Jostein. Right now, the temptation for me is a K10D at

now is enough for my modest photographic needs, and that I should save
for lenses, not camera bodies, but the K10D is very tempting for its

 Mark,

AFAIK, all K10D's and all other Pentax cameras are manufactured with their

 by the user.
So you have no clue for telling it's an early camera.

If he opens a file shot with the camera with Photo ME (can be downloaded
from www.photome.de), the program will show in the exif information the
manufaturing date of the camera, at least it does with the photos shot
with my DS.
