Re: DA 16-50 lens with faulty SDM?
gldnbearz escribió: I purchased a used DA 16-50 from BH, rated at 9+. I put the lens on my K200D and immediately realize that the lens won't auto focus. I check the AF/MF switches on both the camera body lens to make sure that all was in the AF position (or rather, none was in the MF position). I can manually focus the lens without problems. I have also cleaned the SDM contacts on the lens, without any success. Camera focuses fine with the DA 50-135 lens, so I doubt it is a problem with the SDM on the body. OTOH, when I place the lens on the *istDS, the lens will auto focus. I'm guessing that the SDM component on the lens has failed. If that is the case, will it not revert to the standard screw drive on a body that has SDM ability? I have a DA 50-135 which has developed exactly the same problem, namely: screwdriver focusing works on an *ist DS, but SDM doesn't (on a K10D GP). You should return that lens. What's it like? It seems reasonably fast, at least faster than my 18-250. I have one of those lenses. It is quite a good zoom, well built and it focuses really close. Nowadays it is one of my 3 most used lenses, being the others the Pentax DA 50-135 2.8 and the Sigma EX 28 mm. 1.8 Get sure it is the latest macro version with a 72mm filter ring. The previous non macro version (67 mm. filter threads) is not as good as the latest one. The only drawbacks of the 18-50 EX macro are, besides not being a Pentax lens, distortion at 18 mm. (but all the lenses in the same category show more or less the same distortion), and the absence of SDM. As Adam wrote, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is also a good alternative in this range. Re: Wide zoom (and not zoom) lenses redux
Boris Liberman escribió: 5. Sigma 18-50/2.8 - well, I just don't quite like Sigma, and certain people call Sigma really nasty names There are two versions of that lens. I have the newest, Sigma DC EX 18-50 2.8 macro. This one has a 72 mm. filter ring, instead of 67 mm. in the oldest version, and focuses closer. This lens is a very good one, at least the copy I have. Very good sharpness, except at 18 2.8, where it has good centre sharpness and acceptable resolution at the corners of the frame. Barrel distortion at 18 mm. is noticeable when there are straight lines close to the periphery of the picture, but if it bothers you it can be straightened easily in postprocessing. It is solidly built, better than the Tamron. I think that the Tamron 17-50 may have a slight edge in image quality, but not much, however a lot of users have reported focusing problems. The old version of the Sigma lens is still in stock in several shops. I wouldn't buy it, it shows more CA, more vignetting and less sharpness than the new version. In Europe, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is about 15% cheaper than the Sigma. I went for the Sigma because I could buy a LN in box lens for a low price (200 euros). I also thought of the Pentax 17-70 4.0 SDM, but although it seems a good lens, it is overpriced IMO. If it had been possible, I would have bought a Pentax DA 16-50 2.8, but this one was out of my price range. In fact, I still would choose that lens over the others in spite of that Photozone review. I don't dispute the findings of the review, but I am sure that a good sample of the DA 16-50 is a better lens than my Sigma EX, which is very good as I said previously. In fact, it is my second Sigma EX series lens, and both have been satisfying tools (the first was a 70-200 2.8 HSM in Nikon mount). As you see, nowadays quality controls seem to be a thing of the past. Nikon users also have reported problems with the Nikkor 17-55 2.8. I think you have made a good choice with the Tamron you have ordered. If its AF doesn't work as expected, you can always have it replaced. In fact, I am also thinking about buying a Tamron 17-50 2.8, although I would keep the Sigma, then my wife and me would have a fast walk around zoom for each. Re: Pentax sensor cleaning kit
MikeM escribio': After changing my 70-300 lens a number of times to test it on my K10 and K100 the K100 got a speck of dust on the sensor. I tried a couple of puffs from a bulb blower that has always worked before but this time not only didn't the speck move, the number of specks increased every time I tried. And none changed position. They all seem to be circular this time. I am wondering if there were minute droplets in the air. Soup was cooking in the kitchen not too far from where I changes the lenses. Among the methods I found when I tried a search is a Pentax cleaning kit. Any comments on this kit? The Pentax cleaning kit works well and it's easy to use. Make sure to follow the directions carefully. Once said that, I've only had to use it once in mor than 3 years. Usually, a puff or two with a Giotto rocket blower is enough to clear the dust on the sensor of the *ist DS. And i haven't had to clean the sensor of the K10D so far. They're both available under 200 USD, new. Obviously I'm not expecting exceptional quality, but I own some russian glass that's not all that bad actually. Any first hand experience with these lenses? I had the MIR MC 47K 20 mm. 2.5 some years ago. It is a metal made lens, in fact it is very heavy and bulky. It doesn't have a front thread for filters, though. You have to screw the filters at the back of the lens, the lens includes four of them. It is sharp, except wide open were it is good at the centre but soft at the corners. It is multicoated, and it is quite resistant to flare, although it isn't in the same league as SMC Pentax lenses. These lens has a hot colour rendition as it is usual in Russian lenses, at least the ones I have used. In the early examples of this lens, when you screw a filter it can interfere with the movement of the mirror in some film camera bodies, I have read that it doesn't happen in the recent batches of this lens. It doesn't interfere with the mirror in the DSLR bodies because being APS-C digital format bodies, their mirrors are smaller. I paid 100 USD for that lens when I bought it new in 2002. Although I've never used flash much, when I do use it I want it to be able to do what I want, and Pentax have always been pretty poor in that area. Any other suggestions? 3rd party lenses? I have had several Pentax telezooms. The F 70-210 mm. 4-5.6 that some other people recommended is a sharp lens and an excellent choice. I also had the FA 80-320 mm. 4.5-5.6. It isn't as good as the F 70-210, but it is a really good performer too. Now I have the FA* 80-200 mm. 2.8 and the F 80-200 mm. 4.7-5.6. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, the F or FA 80-200 4.7-5.6 is surprisingly good for a modest consumer zoom lens. It is very light and small, doesn't change its length when zooming (it is an internal zoom lens) and its minimum focus distance is 1.1 metres, and is optically quite good, not as good the F 70-210 but on par with the FA 80-320. I recommend the F version because it has a metal lens mount, not plastic as the FA. Re: Frustrated With AF Problems
I understand your frustration, Joseph. But I think that even parfocal zoom lenses (as opposed to varifocal ones) don't focus the same at all focal lengths. Expecting them to be perfect, even the high end ones, is putting to much faith on technology. On the other hand, no AF system is perfect. AF can be convenient, and even faster than manual focus most of the time, but expecting it to be right on the money all the time is like thinking that auto exposure always leads to perfect results. So, if I were you, I wouldn't put much faith on the results of the lens-body calibration when they return from Pentax. Surely they will be able to achieve a better compromise than a user can do at home using focusing charts, but that's all. I think you should try Bill's suggestion, it seems to make sense and see if results are more consistent. Question about K10D and file numbering
I have just received my K10D GP Edition, and I'm trying to learn how to use it. In spite of the many configuration possibilities, it seems a user friendly camera (except the WB adjustment options, I have postponed looking at them in deep because I was getting a headache). I have a question to the veteran users of the K10D in the list: in the DS there is a simple menu option which allows you to reset the file number count. I don't see a way to do the same in the K10D. I want to reset the file number because mine is a used camera, and it'll be easier for me to organize my files if I am able to reset it. Is there a way to do that? I can't find it in the user manual. If not, my suspicion about IR contamination of the AF system is not answered. Only camera manufacturers can answer those questions, unless there is a place where you can find the specifications of the IR filter used in the AF modules. I haven't found any real problems with the autofocus lenses I have or had in my Pentax AF bodies, though. Re: Need info on K10D AF vs. MZ-S
Boris Liberman escribió: Carlos, I agree with Godfrey to that end that the precision of exposure matters more and more as ISO grows. Generally I shoot between ISO 100 and ISO 320. I used to avoid ISO 640 and up but most recent shooting during that rock show proved me wrong. I have received some quite good shots IQ-wise. It also depends on the mastery of post-processing, which of course is a limitless sky. Thanks Boris and Godfrey for your comments on high ISO and the K10D. I sometimes use ISO 800 (and sparsely 1600) with the DS when I'm shooting indoors in order to get enough shutter speed to avoid camera shake. Results at 800 are really good, the DS shines at that ISO speed, and they are good at 1600 if correctly exposed like you say. The K10D has the advantage to allow the user to select the ISO speed in finer steps, and that sounds attractive to me. I am more and more inclined to get a K10D because know it can be bought new at very good prices, in fact it is the biggest bargain in the market now, in my view. It won't be as hot as the K20D, but I think it may serve me well in the years to come. Re: K20D back focus
Anthony Farr escribió: The difference between IR focus and visible wavelength focus is not constant from lens to lens. Different designs of the same focal length can have different IR focus corrections, and the correction is not necessarily proportional when comparing lenses of different focal lengths. UV transmission in any significant degree requires exotic glass so isn't normally a consideration. I know nothing about the spectral characteristics of Pentax's AF sensors; perhaps you have guessed that IR contamination is the cause of the problem. It sounds feasible. AFAIK, the AF sensors in Pentax SLRs (and other brands too) have a built-in IR filter. It is clearly shown in the AF sensor schematics in Bojidar Dimitrov's K mount page: http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/technology/AF/index.html (that is the SAFOX IV sensor). Need info on K10D AF vs. MZ-S
I am debating if I should buy a K10D (I have an *ist DS) or not. I like the two dials of the K10D (I miss that feature since I sold my Z-1), SR, SDM compatibility, weather sealing and the flexibility given by the configuration options of the K10D. On the other hand, my DS gives me a clean 1600 ISO and 3200 if needed and uses AA batteries. Some of you will remember, perhaps, that I also use two MZ-S bodies. The MZ-S AF performance (SAFOX IV) is much, much better, both in speed and low light focusing, than the *ist DS AF. Obviously, I would like to know how the K10D compares to the MZ-S with regard to AF performance. Hopefully, some of you may have used both cameras (K10D and MZ-S) and can give me first hand information to help me solve this quandary. I was going to post this same question in the DePressingReviews forum, but I have come to my senses and stopped at the last moment. At least it gives you a feeling on how the body fits in your hands, though. If I were Ken Rockwell, it would be the most extensive in-deep test he's ever done and I would be able to write one of his very informative reviews, but I haven't got his skills and profound knowledge ;-) That's why I am hopeful that someone in the PDML who has used or still uses both cameras can enlighten me. Others have complained bitterly about noise, pattern artifacts, etc etc, but I've not seen them in my work. I find the K10D to be cleaner than the DS at ISO 800, which most of the time is as high as I use. The DS' ISO 3200 setting I only used a couple of times ... it simply wasn't very usable at all for my work. Thanks Godfrey. As you say, ISO 3200 in the DS is only useful for emergencies. FS: FA 80-200 mm 2.8
As I really want to sell the lens, I have reduced the asking price again, although I realize it may not be a good moment with all the frenzy about the new K20D just now: FA 80-200 mm. 2.8 LN- (almost like new), with its original Pentax S120-230 pouch and pouch strap, front and back caps and original lenshood. I will also include a like new B+W 77 mm. UV filter. It's only got a small blemish: between the first and second element, it has a very small hazy spot only visible at a certain angle, which doesn't affect the quality of the pictures in any way. I took it to my usual repair shop, and they said it wasn't fungus and it wasn't worth opening the lens to clean such a small spot. They also said that special tooling was needed to open the lens in case I wanted to have it cleaned and it should be sent to an official Pentax service centre. I can send photos of the lens to prospective buyers. Price: now 1200 euros,INCLUDING shipping expenses. I am the original owner of this lens. If you are interested in it, please send a message to my email box, not the list. Thank you for your attention. Secondly, an MZ-5 body in excellent condition, also with little signs of use, boxed with its original accessories an instruction manual (Spanish), plus a boxed Fg battery pack, which allows the use of AA batteries, and an F wired remote release. 100 euros plus shipping expenses.
