2007-03-14 Thread ann sanfedele
Thanks, Godders - a wealth of useful info as always :)

ann writes exchangeable image file on the black board 100 times.

but but is there a industry buzz word for the stuff I type in myself
 when I save
a file regardless of the type I save it as, that can be read when you view
a photo in photoshop and is recognized as a caption by places like my
smugmug.

Ah - now I just opened that area in elements 5.0 and ca-chung!
down at the bottom it says powered by XMP never noticed
that before.

Question one -
is there a deadline?

No deadline that I'm aware of yet.

Question 2
exif is an acronym for ? exposure information? or a specific KIND
of info?

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/E/EXIF.html
---
EXIF:
Short for 'EXchangeable Image File', a format that is a standard for
storing interchange information in digital photography image files
using JPEG compression. Almost all new digital cameras use the EXIF
annotation, storing information on the image such as shutter speed,
exposure compensation, F number, what metering system was used, if a
flash was used, ISO number, date and time the image was taken,
whitebalance, auxiliary lenses that were used and resolution.
EXIF files use the JPEG DCT format, so the image data can be read by
any application supporting JPEG, including essentially all Web
browsers and image editing, desktop presentation and document
creation applications.
---

In photoshop elements, when I fill out file info there is a form to
fill out before saving.
IF I put a caption in there iwhen I load stuff to smugmug it keeps
that
info and displays it

But I am confused by meta data versus exif - I might even have
known
at some time but
not now lol!

Metadata is a superset of EXIF. Adobe has been promoting a more
versatile and extensive way of incorporating metadata called XMP ...

http://www.citationsoftware.com/faqXMP.htm
---
QUESTION: What is XMP?

ANSWER: XMP stands for eXtensible Metadata Platform. It is a
standard, XML-based, W3C-compliant way of embedding metadata in files.
---

The XMP overview with links to other information:
   http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp/overview.html

If I have set my ppi in photoshop at 300 when I prepare a tiff , for
instance, doesn't it change that to 72 ppi automatically when I use save for
web? or does
saving for web maintain the 300?

I've never used the Save For Web tool ... I find it compacts photos
well but I don't like how it strips information without my knowing
about it and otherwise changes what I've put together. For web
display, however, the density setting embedded in the image file
doesn't matter ... all that matters are the number of pixels in H and
V. Very very few image viewing applications honor the density setting
and most cock it up when they do.

finally,
got the link to the site? even though I'm off to the darkside for my
digital stuff, I'd
like to still be represented for all my pentax years...

I have images that were commercially scanned from slides and black
and
white stuff.

http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/artist

Go there, get an artist's code, and then go back and set up your
profile. After that, start uploading images as it seems appropriate.

IPTC is the standard developed in the 1970's by the International
Press Telecommunications Council. It was initially developed as a
standard for exchanging information between news organizations and
has evolved over time. Around 1994, Adobe Photoshop's File Info
form enabled users to insert and edit IPTC metadata in digital image
files and so it was adopted by stock photo agencies, and other
publishing businesses outside of the news media.
---

IPTC data is appended to the files in a manner similar to EXIF
information but is independent of it. XMP encapsulates both kinds of
data, and more (like RAW conversion parameters and editing history...).

Ah - now I just opened that area in elements 5.0 and ca-chung!

A cat photo a sunset and a lighthouse, eh? Well I can top that: I just
sent them a FLOWER photo! Two flower photos, actually. (Might as well
hit 'em with both barrels, eh?)

I must admit I've found their selections and rejections puzzling. Some
of my lifetime portfolio shots were declined and some mediocre stuff
got accepted. I suspect they may be trying to fill some photo
categories that haven't received enough submissions. Or possibly trying
to get shots with some lenses that haven't been sufficiently
represented yet (this is, we have to keep in mind, primarily intended
as a marketing tool for Pentax, not a free image-hosting service for
photographers). And though I've been disappointed and baffled by some
of their decisions, I'm glad to see they're trying to maintain a high
standard.

Can't wait till it opens to the public and I can browse everyone else's
shots!

Re: Pentax Gallery

2007-03-14 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Jack,

I have the answer to your problem. They examined my pictures and
indicated the issue. What happens is that they look for exif data in
the image. If they find any, they look for Pentax camera. If they
don't find that, they reject it.

In my pictures, the scanning software embedded some data in the exif,
which caused their software to look for Pentax camera. This was what
caused the rejection.

So what you need to do, is use the Adobe (Elements or Photoshop) Save
for Web option - this actually strips out all the exif data. Then you
can upload your scanned images. I have now successfully uploaded
about 6 images that were previously rejected.

Question 2
exif is an acronym for ? exposure information? or a specific KIND of info?

fill out before saving.
IF I put a caption in there iwhen I load stuff to smugmug it keeps that
info and displays it

But I am confused by meta data versus exif - I might even have known

If I have set my ppi in photoshop at 300 when I prepare a tiff , for
instance, doesn't it
change that to 72 ppi automatically when I use save for web? or does
saving for web
maintain the 300?

finally,

digital stuff, I'd
like to still be represented for all my pentax years...

I have images that were commercially scanned from slides and black and
white stuff.

sorry I haven't been much here - I'm just overwhelemed with real life

Bruce Dayton wrote:

I'll keep at it.

I don't know how it might happen, but is sounds as if some EXIF data is
still attached to your images. Try this:

After getting the image adjusted and sized they way you want it, create
a new, blank image in Photoshop, making its pixel dimensions identical
to the photo you just optimized. Then go to the original image, Select
All and Copy. Then Paste into the new, blank file. Save this and use it
as the file to upload, making certain you check the box for Scanned
Image on the Pentax web page.

If that doesn't do it then I'm really stumped.

No deadline that I'm aware of yet.

 Question 2

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/E/EXIF.html
---

The XMP overview with links to other information:

If I have set my ppi in photoshop at 300 when I prepare a tiff , for
 instance, doesn't it
change that to 72 ppi automatically when I use save for web? or does
 saving for web
 maintain the 300?

I've never used the Save For Web tool ... I find it compacts photos
well but I don't like how it strips information without my knowing
about it and otherwise changes what I've put together. For web
display, however, the density setting embedded in the image file
doesn't matter ... all that matters are the number of pixels in H and
V. Very very few image viewing applications honor the density setting
and most cock it up when they do.

 finally,
got the link to the site? even though I'm off to the darkside for my

Go there, get an artist's code, and then go back and set up your

I agree that Collection probably indicates an elevated status that

Jack Davis wrote:

I think they're still working out the bugs in their server-side and
client-side scripting. Every image I submit goes immediately into the
Awaiting Submission category due to lack of image data, even if it's
a directly converted JPEG from a PEF raw file. The camera model and all
the exposure data show up - even lens focal length - but the lens model
doesn't. I have no idea why because I can see the lens data when I use
Photoshop or IrfanView to check the EXIF.

So I click Edit Info and select the Lens Series drop-down box to
indicate if it's an M, A, FA or whatever. But after this the Lens
choice box is still empty. So I Save and go back to my Photos page
where the image is still Awaiting Submission. Now I can click Edit
Info again. It remembers the lens series I chose before and now gives
me a drop-down menu of all the lenses in that series. At this point I
can select the appropriate lens and complete the form.

After this the image gets accepted and is Ready for Review.

So it ends up being a 3-step process:
1) Upload Image
2) Edit Info to choose lens series (and add image title category)
3) Edit Info to select specific lens

It's really much less onerous that it appears when written out and I
don't consider it a big deal, but it's an indication that the gallery
is really still in beta testing. Of course it is. That's why it's not
open to the public yet.

They'll get the bugs worked out.

Yes. I'm checking the scanned box when it applies.
The reason given for being declined is that the images were not taken

Pentax Gallery - Another Question

2007-03-09 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I am preparing to post some photos for the Pentax Gallery but I need
this item clarified prior to submitting them:

 From the FAQ:

Q: What else do I need to know about submitting photos to the
  PENTAX Photo Gallery?

A: Link back to the PENTAX Photo Gallery when you post your
photos elsewhere. Pages on other websites that display images
hosted on PENTAX must provide a link back to the PENTAX Photo
  Gallery.

The question I posed to them:

I host my photos on my own website(s) for viewing, critique and
occasionally sale, and I submit photos for exhibition elsewhere.
Sometimes my photos are used on the website for those exhibitions.
These sites do not carry links to the Pentax Photo Gallery for the
dual reasons that a) it doesn't exist yet and b) I feel it would be
inappropriate to do so ... In essence, it seems you are asking that
I surrender control of the ability to display my photographs
independently of the Pentax Photo gallery if you accept them for
 posting.

I have thousands of photos that are not displayed anywhere else,
and I could reserve some of them for display on the Pentax Photo
Gallery. But I do tend to cherry pick my best photographs and
highlight them on my own website and submit them to competitions
 and exhibitions ...

What does this rule really mean in practical terms?

Anyone else have thoughts about this?

Godfrey

Yes - I think you misunderstand the rule. To quote (emphasis mine):

Pages on other websites that display images
*hosted on PENTAX* must provide a link back to the PENTAX Photo
   Gallery.

I read that as saying that if you deep-link to an image on the Pentax
site you must also provide a link to the gallery as a whole.

It doesn't say you can't have another copy of the same image on your
own site - it just says you can't use the Pentax gallery as a photo
hosting site for your own purposes without mentioning the gallery.

Note, too, that there's nothing about the images being yours; you
couldn't deep-link to one of my images without that gallery link.

I read that as saying that if you deep-link to an image on the Pentax

Pentax Gallery Question

2007-03-08 Thread Jack Davis
I'm getting frustrated and declined images. Reason, not taken with a
Pentax camera. Not true..of course.
I'm not being given the chance to enter the equipment used.
After multiple attempts with the same images, I've had seven accepted
which are in a to be reviewed category, I believe it's termed.
Another seven are simply not being allowed due to the aforementioned
not taken with Pentax.

I emailed the question to Pentax yesterday, but nothing back yet.

Anyone having a like experience?

Thanks, Paul.
I've uploaded images shot with ME Super, LX and K10D. In the case of
the seven accepted, the drop-down menu presented its self. In the case
of those declined, it did not. Somehow the system is making it's own
equipment determination without asking.

It seems that right now, scanned images don't work. I believe it is
reading the exif data and not finding a pentax camera listed. I
originally got one scanned image accepted before they listed the *istD
as a camera. Once they fixed that, it seems that scanned images are
no longer accepted. I wrote to them a couple of days ago and they
replied that they would pass on the problem to the programming staff.

Check the archives from a month or so ago (or a few days ago Declined
thread I think. Jack Davis was asking the same question). You need to send
an email to request an access code to be able to submit photos.

I'm at work so I don't have access to all the information at the moment.

Cheers,

Dave

Tom, there's a description area a Title area
Both require input or Pentax won't accept.

No Title will work on one image, but then you'll a whole gallery of No
 Name
Could simply number them, but Pentax might not accept an entire gallery of
 numbers.

Question about pentax gallery (mostly language-wise)

2007-03-06 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi!

Yesterday I submitted two photos to Pentax gallery
(http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/artist).

Now, when I am looking at these two photos I am seeing Approved in
Gallery - does it mean that they will be shown to the public if and
when the gallery becomes public, or is there something more that needs
to happen?

Thanks, I am really confused by the language here.

Boris

The gallery isn't open for viewing yet. It's under construction. Any Pentax
photographer can submit, but not all submissions are accepted. I don't remember
how one goes about getting a password, but perhaps someone else can fill you
in. A message from one of the galery organizers was posted here last week.

do you have to be a registered artist just to view what is there?

It is not ready for viewing yet. They are just in the stages of
building up the galleries. So all you can do is submit your photos
for the gallery for the moment.

You log in to the site with your email address and password. Then it
takes you to a page that lets you look at your account, bio or photos.
On the photos page is a link to upload photos - that lets you upload
