While we're on the subject of making use of sensors ...

2024-01-20 Thread Larry Colen
One of the things I wish that lightroom could do is make use of the
accelerometer data to level the images in post processing. Yeah, it works
pretty well when there's a visible horizon just using the image, but the
accelerometers would get it so much faster.

In a similar vein, they'd also be really helpful for stitching panoramas,
particularly with compass data as well.

Subject: Which would you prefer in a lens?

2023-12-18 Thread Bipin Gupta
1. Brutal Sharpness. A little fall off towards the edges OK.
2. Vivid Color reproduction - more towards earthy Browns
and true Reds. Little or no Bluish cast.
3. Controlled Distortion in both the X and Y planes
4. Good rendering both in the Shadows and Highlights.
5. Low Flare.
6. Hard Coating to fight off dust, dirt, moisture, spots and
smudges. Easy to clean with a Lens Cloth and lift out gunk
that collects on the front element. Note: I avoid Filters.

I use mostly Zooms so there could be some compromise. I will go on
buying the same Zoom Lens if necessary till I find that "Perfect"
copy.
Regards and a Merry Christmas to all of You.

2023-04-20 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hi Collin, I had the Pentax Spotmatic way back in 1978. Bought it 2nd hand
in Paris from a pretty Nurse returning back to the Philippines from Canada.
An excellent camera. Still have a few M42 Lenses.
But the Goodwill Price is extremely high, as you can get one from KEH for
much less.

You might want to try this,

https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

It's free it works most of the time, if your computer can actually see
the storage device, and you can throw the author a couple of bucks if
you think it was worth it or not if you don't.

The only problem is the UI is a bit rudimentary by modern standards,
i.e. it runs in a command window, at least on Microsoft machines, but I
expect you won't have any problem.

Impetigo, IIRC, is a variation of a staph infection. The Staph
bacteria, in all it's mutations, has become a rather nasty one due to
the misuse of antibiotics. It is now one of the Super Bugs. Don't
skimp on your antibiotic, and take acidophilus a few hours after

Yep - that's the generally accepted name. "Infantigo" appears to be
a US-specific corruption.

My younger brother had a very nasty case of this when he was perhaps two.
It wasn't responding to the normal treatment (Gentian Violet, in those days),
so our doctor decided to try a new antibiotic that had recently been made
available for general use in such cases - something called "Penicillin".
While Penicillin had been used by the armed forces in WWII, it took a bit
longer for it to come into widespread use. Fortunately our GP kept himself
informed of developments in medicine, and was prepared to try something new.
(This was in the early '50s).

 1. Paul, I was expecting that you would refute this statement:
" And the proposed mandate for notification technology in cars misses the
targeted population, because so few parents of young children buy new
cars.” -- First, some parents of young children are forced to buy a new
car once the child is born, especially, if it is #3 and above. And even if
most parents buy used cars, it is obvious that all new cars will soon
 become used (and eventually old).

 2. There is a weird way how the text is broken into small paragraphs.
The most obvious is the paragraph starting with "General Motors and
Nissan..." is broken into two in the middle of the thought.

The last three paragraphs also should have been one, me thinks.

And "“The brain process is the same,” " should have been with the
 previous paragraph.

 3. "One such system, the VitaSense, uses low-power radio to sense movement
 and breathing."
I suspect the word "waves" is missing ("radio waves", not "radio").

Sorry, I just couldn't help noticing these.

Re: Link to Paul's excellent NY times article on an important safety subject

2017-10-28 Thread Igor PDML-StR

My sincere apology, Paul!

You are right: this is not the right venue for the literary discussion.
(After sending the message, I thought that I should have sent it off the
list, but it was too late.)

The reason I started asking you was that I was interested in your
professional opinion and was very surprised by what I've heard from you.
(My curiosity stems in part from the fact that writing and some editorial
work have been among my professional activities for many years, albeit in
a different genre and with much smaller readership.)

But yes, I know that my questions and comments, while driven by the
curiosity about why things the way they are and desire to figure out
what's correct, can sometimes sound as a harsh critique. Sorry about that.

That's my nature of a researcher: learning from the opposition of facts
and ideas, and from challenging those. To me, the most interesting
questions and comments about the things I am doing (work or hobbies) are
those that make me thinking and help me learning, even though they might
sound as hard or critical. But I know that many (most?) of people are not
like that.

Sometimes, getting excited about the topic of the conversation, I tend to
forget that. As my colleague expressed that recently:
"People like us are inconvenient for those around us".

(I am also akin that engineer in the old joke, who yells: "Wait, I see
what the problem with the guillotine is..."

http://sethf.com/freespeech/memoirs/humor/guillotine.php )

Since you've mentioned, - believe it or not, some of my most important
revelations about teaching originated from the questions and comments by
students.

But again, despite the breadth of topics discussed on PDML, this is not
the best venue for my questions and comments related to your literary
work. I will do my best to refrain from those in the future, especially
since you requested that.

However, I cannot promise that I will not "torture" a NYT editor with
the questions about the peculiarities of NYT style I asked you earlier,
should the opportunity (and the appropriate venue) arise. ;-)

Peace!

Igor

about NYT's style.

My teachers/advisors (at all stages and levels) taught me that each paragraph
should contain one main thought/point. Then, if you were to write down those
main points, you get a reverse outline, which is a good tool for checking on
the coherence of the written communication (paper, thesis, ...) And that's
what I've been teaching my students in the communication courses.

I think I see the rational behind shorter paragraphs (in a way similar to
that for shorter sentences): they are usually simpler to read. But I'd say,
not at the expense of splitting the thought. But the same way as a long
sentence doesn't get just cut in parts, a paragraph doesn't get split up into
parts before the thought is completed.

And, I am failing to see the rational behind quotes being separate
paragraphs. Moreover, I am rather confused how that is supposed to work here:
the same direct quote is split into two parts between the last two
paragraphs. It is not that every sentence of the direct quote are in a
separate paragraph: Three sentences of that direct quote are split between
two paragraphs.

I too have read Orwell. Rule six is applicable to every communication, but many

Re: Link to Paul's excellent NY times article on an important safety subject

2017-10-28 Thread Paul Stenquist
Okay, we’re done with this. I post photos here to be critiqued, and I
appreciate comments both positive and negative. But I don’t post my work here .
Ann posted a link to this article, because she thought it was a topic of
concern. And I appreciate her doing so. But it wasn't posted for a critique. I
get plenty of input from my editors at the Times in regard to style and
structure. And I’d venture to say that all of them are far more qualified in
regard to editorial than is Igor

I’m a writer by trade. The Times and various other pubs are my place of work.
Would any PDML members want me to come to their place of work and critique
their performance? I bet I could offer Igor some tips in regard to managing a
classroom. I have some experience there. But I wouldn’t do that. It’s not part
of our role as members of this group.

Again, thanks for the kudos, and comments regarding the issue at hand —
children dying in cars — are certainly appropriate. But no need to critique my
work in detail or the Times style book. Feel free to write to the Times if you
have a problem with the way they report the news, but don’t debate it with me.

Love to all!

Thanks much,
Paul

Re: Link to Paul's excellent NY times article on an important safety subject

2017-10-28 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Paul,

Thank you for the detailed response. I've learned some interesting things
about NYT's style.

My teachers/advisors (at all stages and levels) taught me that each
paragraph should contain one main thought/point. Then, if you were to
write down those main points, you get a reverse outline, which is a good
tool for checking on the coherence of the written communication (paper,
thesis, ...) And that's what I've been teaching my students in the
communication courses.

I think I see the rational behind shorter paragraphs (in a way similar to
that for shorter sentences): they are usually simpler to read. But I'd
say, not at the expense of splitting the thought. But the same way as a
long sentence doesn't get just cut in parts, a paragraph doesn't get split
up into parts before the thought is completed.

And, I am failing to see the rational behind quotes being separate
paragraphs. Moreover, I am rather confused how that is supposed to work
here: the same direct quote is split into two parts between the last two
paragraphs. It is not that every sentence of the direct quote are in a
separate paragraph: Three sentences of that direct quote are split between
two paragraphs.

Again, sorry, - I don't mean to start a debate here. Rather, I am just
explaining why I am still confused by NYT's style.

Igor

PS. This is not to undermine that the article is very interesting.

In regard to the paragraph breaks, the first is debatable but a split
decision in my view and the editors. The Times philosophy says short
graphs are better.

The graphs toward the end of the story are mandated by an immutable Times
style rule: every direct quote is a separate graph. That is written in
stone, and it seems to have worked well for at least 50 years.

Thanks Stan. The purpose of the legislation is regulation. Again, space didn’t
allow, but the text of the senate amendment requires NHTSA to develop a

Hi Igor,

The Auto Alliance point regarding how long it would take to equip the fleet is
self refuting in that they said the same thing six years ago. More importantly,
I get only 900 words, so I have to pick my battles.

In regard to the paragraph breaks, the first is debatable but a split decision
in my view and the editors. The Times philosophy says short graphs are better.

The graphs toward the end of the story are mandated by an immutable Times style
rule: every direct quote is a separate graph. That is written in stone, and it
seems to have worked well for at least 50 years.

Interesting... I didn't know such a technology already exists. Nor I had
heard about the proposed regulation.

Did NYT fire all their editors?
I was a bit confused by a few things (of which most are what the editor
should have noticed, such as #2 and #3):

The most obvious is the paragraph starting with "General Motors
and Nissan..." is broken into two in the middle of the thought.

Subject: Re: Inexpensive Pentax AC adapter

2017-08-10 Thread Bipin Gupta
One hears these adages quite often like "You pay what you get for", "Cheap" etc.
Is it true?? NOT for the smart guy - or call him frugal, Mr. Scrooge
if you wish.
Cheap need not mean it will damage your camera or fail.

So here is what I did. Bought a German Hama SMPS Multi Volt Adapter for $12
on sale from Media Mart while in Cologne, Germany.
SMPS (switched mode power supply units) are one of the safest circuitry used in
digital equipment & electronics. This one had a 3-way safety circuit.

Bought the Connector Pentax uses for $ 2.40 each - called the Male Hirose 3-pin
MQ172-3SA Plug. God alone knows why Pentax uses obscure stuff and not
simple Japanese Standard Connectors.

Soldered two thick copper pins which plugs into the Universal Socket of the Hama
Adapter. Works great on my Pentax DSLRs.

Note: wiring the Hirose connector - the center pin is a dummy, the Ground pin is
top most one viewed with the plug inserted into the camera. The 8.3 volt pin is
the bottom most one.

Regards.

Amateurs worry about equipment, professionals about time & masters
worry about light.

Re: On the subject of Infrared

2016-06-11 Thread Mark C

A few months ago I had my Nikon P6000 converted to IR by this guy:

http://www.isaacszabo.com/infrared.html

Don't know if he does full spectrum conversions, but worth asking. Very
fast turn around, good price and no problems with it at all. I'm
planning on sending my K5 to him when I upgrade to a K1, though I'm very
happy with the IR P shoot since it is and easy carry along with a
regular DSLR.

My K10D was converted by Pro Camera Repair in San Diego, but when I
contacted them a while back they said they did not have a qualified tech
to do that work. Maybe they have found someone by now.

In the past I used an *ist D with RM90 and alter an R72 filter. It
worked well but you don't get the sensitivity that a converted camera
can give you. Often shot at ISO 800 or 1600. By contrast, the P6000 I
had converted recently usually stays at ISO64 - at that setting the IQ
is actually pretty good.

Some years ago I did a comparison of RM90 vs R72 filters on the *ist-D,
if you are interested see here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/digital_infrared_hoya_r72_vs_rm90

My father used the RM90 with Kodak HIE - I tried it but there was
surprisingly little difference between the RM90 and and a #29 deep red
filter, other than a much longer exposure time. That's what made HIE so
nice... you could just put on ared filter and get killer IR effect.

If I were to do something like convert on of my old bodies to IR (or

My preference for an IR body would be to have the body be full

front of the lens. With live view, IR only is much less of an issue. I
had some difficulty finding IR block filters. Does anyone have
specific recommendations for such?

I don't need a Sony nex. I already have a *ist-D, K10D & K20D (along

If I can find someone who does "a good, reasonably priced, job on Pentax

I had Lifepixel convert my Lumix GX8 and sold the Oly E-PL5. I went full
spectrum. I bought into the mirrorless conversion for ease of use. I
cannot get it straight if Pentax live view would work as well. I read some
articles and I have a K-x. It is moot for now tho. You may know better
since you have experience.

I have two really good lens and can adapt my Pentax lenses for fun. The GX8
has a bright lcd and bright viewfinder. For outdoor use I think this will
help me a lot.

kolarivision.com and precisioncamera.com and lifepixel.com all do
conversions.

Never seen that before. Jesus I hope that's going in a pdml annual at

On the subject of prodigal lenses

2016-04-25 Thread Larry Colen
My 18-250 returned home from Tamron repair. Three days turnaround at
the shop, three days shipping.

They did a CLA, repaired any broken pieces, and returned it in much
better shape than it was even before I busted the UV filter. All of the
wobble when the barrel is extended is gone, it is tight but not sticky,
and seems to work just fine. $176 is their base rate to the West Coast.

If they made a weatherproof version of this lens, it would be just about
the perfect daytime/outdoors walkabout lens. It's surprisingly sharp,
isn't too large and it covers the vast majority of focal lengths you need.

I do find it amusing that my two APS only lenses are the two that needed
repair just before the K-1 is released.

The Phalaborwa Orchid Club are holding their annual show this weekend. This
GESO is a photographic record of some of the exhibits. The climate is ideal
for growing orchids without need for a controlled environment. Some of the
members did well on national shows in former years but don't travel any more
because of the cost.

I should add, following the line of thought, that any/every camera is
capable in the hands of one who knows how to best use it.

 That's half-true, at best. My Nikon P7100 just isn't good for low-light
photography (although it's considerably better than my previous Canon
A710). Similarly, no camera is good if you hate to use it (you can argue
that it's capable, I suppose, but that smells of wrong question).

Really?

You show me one camera that cannot produce a pleasing image and I'll
show you a million that are.

I wasn't referring to a specific use for a specific camera. I was
speaking in general terms, that being, any camera is capable of
producing a pleasing and decent image, unless it's downright
defective.

That just brings you up to half-true. ;-) My point is that any camera
you refuse to use because you hate it can't produce a pleasing and
decent image. Like you, I'm talking in general terms, obviously one can
haul the camera out and take a picture -- but if your inclination is to
leave it in the closet gathering dust instead of taking pictures...

I fully understand Aahz's no camera is good if you hate to use it
comment. The camera my be fine, but if it's ergonomics are getting in
the way of the user, or even if it's just butt ugly and is missing key
components (the Pentax K-01 for example), it's not going to be something
the photographer wants to use.

The cheap prices of the K-01 keep tempting me, but I have learned from
experience that I need a viewfinder or at least a good articulating LCD
and the K-01 has neither, so I keep exercising self-discipline, even
though it'd probably work well enough for the main purpose that I want to
get it for (indoor low-light photography). I'm not comfortable yet
buying a camera for only one purpose.
