Using a die to cut threads on a shaft is easier than trying to drill a
centered hole in a crank and tapping that hole. If it were an unbent shaft,
you could make the hole using a lathe but since the crank is already formed,

Anyone know what length/width/thickness they are supposed to be? Would they
be the same spring as found in open-works machines like the AU? Someone
fudged in the wrong spring on my A and I would like to make it right.

Stop the presses. I've been chatting with the fellow who has the

I received the following message from a fellow who works in the next town:
Today a friend gave me a Columbia model 7 dictaphone and a cylinder shaving
machine. The dictaphone has a broken amber colored speaking tube. Do you
know if a relplacement can be found?
Any advice I can pass along to him?
ather "fuzzy" and not as smooth grained as the original.

I have a spanner wrench which I made pins for to fit the Columbia. You
could construct a simple one with nails and a piece of hardwood. Once you
have them spaced correctly and driven in the wood, just cut the heads off
and dress the ends of the nails. Apply a little penetrating oil to the

A friend of mine has just acquired a 12-15 and is in need of the door pull
for the left side door. I don't have a picture yet and I don't know if
they were shared with other Victor models of the period. Please let me know
if you think you have one.

It was probably a riveting tool with a long reach. You could pop rivet them
but that would not look quite right from the inside. Anyone else know more
about riveting?

Have you tried drilling out the rivets and taking the part to a musical
Instrument repair shop? They may be able to straighten it out. Then you
can rivet it back on.

that they would like to part with? It is the roundish, openwork knob
with a round disk behind it. I can take a picture of a good one if
necessary.

It's not difficult to recreate a section of molding with silicone impression
material or modeling putty and the right acrylics. You then color it to
match (sometimes not as easy as it sounds. I've seen what Greg Dorrance in
Attleboro can do with this technique and it is amazing.

I've drilled out the rivets to rebuild one and then re-riveted but one can
certainly use nuts and bolts to put it back together.

I'd buy the horn. Someone sent me a hornless crapophone that I am altering
to make it play better. Buy it. I'll give you $15 plus shipping for the
horn.

It probably is an all original machine-no new repro parts, just the ones it
came with originally. The reproducer does look better than other crapophone
units I've seen though.
