Re: [Phono-L] Little Wonder Phono problems

2019-05-04 Thread Mike Tucker via Phono-L
Ron,

What is the width of the spring?

The Windsor listing gives the following for small toy motors (Genola, Baby
Grand,Carryola Cub, Pei-o-phone, Artone, Featherweight etc) with pear shape
holes as ½” x .022 x 8feet.

For old type toy motors the dimensions are 9/16” x .025 x 10 feet.

I have no specific listing for the Little Wonder.

Best wishes,

Mike Tucker

I’ve been sent a LW phono with a host of small problems. This is a Vertical
only machine that according to the lit. should use a sapphire ball. The
governor springs were wrong. I’ve got two with Columbia weights that are
pretty close. Had to make a lower bearing for the governor. It’s tad
sloppy but rotational speed seems fairly consistent until the record slows
half way into the side. I suspect the spring is the wrong size (too long
and maybe too thick). S, what size should the spring be? There is a
dish shaped washer on the winding gear side of the spring. Should the
upward curve of the dish be towards the spring or towards the winding gear?
Should the spring be exposed on its other end or was there another dish or
flat disk there?Anybody know? And does anyone know the actual length,
width, thickness of the gov. springs?

Thanks,

Ron,

What exactly do you need?

The whole offset governor, the governor assembly with shaft or the governor
assembly without shaft?

The governor is a two ball type and uses the normal Edison governor disc and
small end, but with two holes instead of 3 or 4. A 3 can be adjusted to suit
and the governor springs are standard Edison springs as per Standards etc.

[Phono-L] Coin Ops

2013-01-02 Thread Mike Tucker

Hi all,

I have been researching the later Edison coin op phonographs and am
stuck on the Alva coin op.

All the later coin ops used the same cabinet and apart from the Windsor,
the same coin activation and topworks. The differences lay in the type
of motor and the metal deck.

I have been reliably informed that the Alva coin op used the normal flat
metal deck as per Triumph B's. Any advice to the contrary would be
appreciated.

The real unknown is what tag was used. I can envisage the normal Triumph
tag, the same tag except with Alva instead of Triumph, and possibly the
generic Edison tag with ALVA stamped on to the MODEL area.

Can anyone assist me with this information?

It would certainly be possible to have the cabinet parts made. As I use a

around $750 to $1000.

Photo of one of my cabinets is also attached.

If you are thinking of making up a machine from my parts, I would do the
cabinet at cost.

Alternatively, I would be interested in obtaining the remains of the cabinet
you have if you prefer to let it go.

Best wishes,

Mike Tucker

Hi Mike- I didn't know anyone was making M motors-- That's impressive.
I have a 'wondering'. When I got my Class 'M', the case was missing three
sides. It is the early short case in mahogany. It is missing the front
(including the drawer, the back and the left end. What I do have is the
base board and the right end. It also has the two swarf drawer runners.
Years ago I purchased an excellent reproduction case, and restored the
machine. I was wondering if it would be feasible for you to make my
missing sides and drawer--and what the cost would be. I'd be happy to
send you pictures so you can see what I have.

Thank you-

Re: [Phono-L] Edison Windsor

2010-07-04 Thread Mike Tucker

Thanks George,

Much appreciated. I will anxiously await any coin op material you have.

I am amazed at the lack of such information in collecting circles and the
huge gap in knowledge that exists regarding these machines. I was
flabbergasted when one senior collector said that he never knew the
Rosenfield M existed.

Amazingly, I have contacted a number of respected collectors and not one can
identify and early Windsor. I would love to be close to the Edison Historic
site so that I could research their material - how much is there still to
learn!!

I have been offered another coin op cabinet which appears to be a small
company production from around the turn of the Century, but nothing I can
identify other than a superficial resemblance to the Empire State model in
the upper area - any thoughts?

Best wishes,

Mike Tucker

Mike,

Cabinets for Edison floor model coin-ops (and I suspect Rosenfields as
well) were manufactured by the Edward Jordan Company in Brooklyn.

I will respond to the email you sent me when I can lay my hands on some
coin-op materials that I've stashed...

Re: [Phono-L] Cleaning a phonograph. Wax removing.

2010-02-14 Thread Mike Tucker
This is a serial number for a late Spring Motor machine and likely the only
reference to this on the machine would be the plate on the front with
Spring Motor For Phonograph in front of the mandrel.

The Spring Motor machines have a nickel plated brass button which is held in
place by a T shaped spring on the inside of the lid.

Not very safe for carrying, but OK to hold the lid in place.

These can be made.

My phonograph is a Spring Motor and I think it was bought in 1898 because
of the record collection that was with it. Serial Number is 29251. Latches
are not like the ones in the photo nor like the standard. In this spring
motor, latches are automatic with (I suppouse) springs or something like
springs that makes a click when you fit the lid. And a knob outside the
lid, at both sides, to press for releasing. Well, that is what I think is
has to be, because it lacks the latches mechanism in the lid sides.

Gabriel.

I can't help with the parts, but what do you mean by click-fitting
system. Are you talking about the latches on an early Edison?

 Hope this helps,

Thanks for your help. And YES, I am talking about latches. Excuse my
poor english. I can say latches in spanish with more than twenty

When you say re-grease the spring, are you talking about open and

[Phono-L] Class M

2009-10-17 Thread Mike Tucker
Many thanks for those contemplating my problem with the Class M topworks screw.

Mario has provided the blindingly obvious solution which is that the screw
pushes against the boss in the middle of the Class M deck ( located between the
two right hand mounting blocks) and acts as firstly a stop to prevent the
topworks moving to the left and slackening the drive belt, and secondly as a
belt tensioner.

My problem was looking at the topworks in isolation and not when it was mounted
to the deck.

At least I now know how to make minor tension adjustments to the drive belt on
my two Class M's.

Best wishes to all.

[Phono-L] Class M

2009-10-16 Thread Mike Tucker
For the technical minded.

I have occasionally wondered what was the purpose of the screw in the topworks
castings, under the mandrel, on Class M phonographs.

Reading a copy of the 1893 The Phonogram, I came across an article on How to
work the Phonograph which noted that if the belt slips, it needs tightening
and goes on with a long-handled screwdriver turn the projecting screw under
the mandrel a few times, which will press the body forward and tighten the
belt..

The Class M's I have seen either have no screw in place or the screw goes
through the casting and doesn't connect to anything, so turning the screw does
precisely nothing.

I must assume that there was some additional part which the screw butted
against to enable it to move the topworks, but I cannot see how or where this
would fit.

Can anyone enlighten me?

[Phono-L] Edison Home C bearing

2009-08-08 Thread Mike Tucker
Received this information from Terry Baer.

Sorry for delayed response. The model C used a unique mandrel assembly
with captured bearing. Picture an early two minute mandrel shaft. Remove
the mandrel and turn down the area under the mandrel to about 5/16 leaving
the larger 5/8 feedscrew. Now slip on a bearing that is 5/8 OD 5/16 ID.
Now slip on a mandrel with smaller 5/16 holes on both ends. Now slip the
whole assembly in the top works.

Hi All,

If anyone has a Columbia 122 portable, can they send/post some pictures to help
a new owner of one? The pictures required are described below.

Thanks,
Keith

===

I just bought one [Columbia 122], and was wondering if
you could send me a picture of the mounting side of the sound box,
when it is not mounted to tone arm. On the one I got, any red rubber
gasket that was apparently there originally is missing and all I have
is a little brass flange with a mounting pin inside of it. The little
pin attaches to the tone arm. I guess what I can't figure out is how
the loose flange mounts in the box with the rubber gasket.

A further email asked for, another picture or two of the back
side of the 122 reproducer

First strip old paint from horn, following directions of whatever product you
choose to use. Before painting, make sure the surface is clean, and free
of all product, dust, steel wool, or whatever. Find a clean wind free
environment to paint, so as dust and other stuff doesn't stick to the new paint.
For larger horns as may be on a Columbia, or Edison machine I suggest the
Krylon Metalics Red; For smaller horns such as a Gem, or a client machine, I
suggest the spray on stained glass window paint found at craft stores like
Michaels. After priming the horn with silver primer, spray color evenly and
lightly to avoid drips. It may take several coats to get the desired
brightness, from candy apple to dark maroon. When dry, paint the pin striping
as suggested in the 'Complete Talking Machine' by Eric L. Reiss. You may
choose however to use a gold paint marker for inside the horn, it gives a nice
clean line. If you choose to use a brush on the inside, a water based gold
paint is great, it dries waterproof, and you can wipe it off quickly and easily
if you screw up, and in most cases you will. Flowers can be painted on with
acrylic paint, or you can use model paint. Books like 'The Complete Book Of
Decorative Painting' by Tera Liegh can show you how to one stroke paint on the
flowers in the Tea Tray fashion. ALLWAYS USE A GOOD BRUSH! An easy way out of
painting, is to use floral transfer applique's. You just rub them on, and then
just touch or dress them up using paint. They are water resistant, but can be
removed with oil if you want to. I used these on a horn from an Standard X-2 I
purchased from Tim Fabrizio, and after changing hands a few times I saw it for
sale on E-bay. I think the buy it now price was $1450.00. Anyway, I hope I've
given you some good ideas. Good luck, Jay

I can sympathize. It is wonderful to have recordings of those dear to us. I
have 3 Recordisc recordings of my mother playing piano and organ back in the
50s. These are?my most treasured records. On one of the sides she plays and
sings 'Now is the Hour' which always makes me well up in tears when I listen to
it, since she's been gone for 16 years now. The words are:
'Now is the hour when we must say goodbye
Soon you'll be sailing far across the sea
While you 're away, oh then remember me
When you return you'll find me waiting here'

Although this may be a little off-topic, I recently came into possession
of
a cache of old recordings made by my uncle in 1946. These are
transcriptions of the voices of my family 62 years ago. Pretty cool. He
also recorded some radio programs including a game between the Yankees

the
 Brooklyn Dodgers.

In addition to The Record Disc Corp., there are also transcription
recordings on National Recording Disc, Melodisc, Century Radio Co., The
Recordisc Corp., Philco Safety Record, and the Wilcox-Gay Corp. Some are
recorded at 78 rpm, but most are 33 1/3.

In addition to getting more information about this whole recording
process,
I need to solve a problem. The discs are recorded on different
substrates.
Paper, aluminum, and some type of magnetic iron or steel. The most
valuable
recordings are on the magnetic steel records.

In addition to my many victrolas, I have two fully functional turntables
with modern magnetic cartridges. I cannot play the discs. The cartridge
gets sucked flat onto the steel records, compressing the cantilever
stylus
 by magnetic attraction.

So. How do I play these recordings? My only solution is to find an old
record player with an inexpensive crystal cartridge. Any other ideas?
Any
insight into this process is greatly appreciated.

I also can relate to that. When my aunt sold her home, she gave me a bunch
of 78 records. One of them was a Packard Bell home record. and When I
played it was I surprised to hear my Mom and Dad and both my grandparents,
all long gone, wonderful hearing their voices again. Al Menashe
