Would have to talk to Erland about this, right now it's a no simply
because in CustomBrowse iPeng doesn't know what to look for. The text
being shown is just a long string, you don't know what's an artist,
composer, album, track, rating or whatever so you can't look for it.
Same with the online services like Napster, Spotify etc.
It's one of these nasty side effects of Logitech's decision to have a

I see. Thanks for trying.

Biography and Album Review show up also in those context menus, perhaps
because they are plugins on the SBS side. I guess it is not possible to
hook into those either (those menu items knows what the album and
artist is).

Btw. Why does iPeng have to know what is what? A Look up option that for

Then the user could choose which of the searches are meaningful. Just a

Biography and AR send the menu items from the server and the server
knows what it is. It just doesn't tell me.
That's the concept I talked about. Logitech's idea is that the
controller should not know what it's doing but at the same time that
means it can't change it an awful lot.

It's different with the normal library menus because here iPeng
doesn't use Logitech's menus but own ones and so knows what it's
showing.

to go back SB 7.5.n frequently to allow people to play tracks whilst
scanning. My experience thus far is that it is quite impossible to
play anything whilst scanning (base or custom) using SB 7.6. I get no
sound, then rebuffering, restarting, and so on.

It is very noticeable using 7.6 that the the squeezebox service is now
running at a constant steady pace (about 9-10% CPU on my PC) whilst
custom scanning. It used to scan in short bursts of a few seconds.

If feasible (optionally?), I'd much rather all scans ran as fast as
possible and I'll forgo listening to SB whilst it is scanning.
SB sometimes decides to rescan without me telling it to, usually when I
have added a track and played it via Music Folder. I wish it wouldn't,
but the issue I have here is that I then get a custom scan which takes
2 hours. During this time I cannot play anything. This is very
different from 7.5.n, when I could play tracks whilst custom scanning.

I had been hoping for faster Custom Scans in 7.6. What we seem to have
now is Custom Scans that are not much quicker than before when playing
music in parallel, but which now don't let you play music at the same
time.

For now I will have to set custom scans to entirely manual and trigger
them only when I want to.

Never mind, the issue was impatience on my part. I just needed to wait

After updating to today's SBS 7.6.1 build I connected the Revue via
Whitebear and entered a search string in the keyboard that failed

cup of coffee and when I returned the missing albums that I was
expecting to see showed up. So, the lesson I learned here is that with
large libraries you need to give the Revue a few moments to catch up. I
attached a picture showing the time search string as it appears the
lower right hand corner of the screen and the list of albums that came
up.

The once-per-second logging was appropriate when I was using this
script to test gsession-inhibit as I was developing it. But for
testing the plugin's behavior, you're right, a slower test will be
sufficient. Try increasing the sleep 1 statement in the script to
something like sleep 20 so that it logs 3 times per minute.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Auto rescan

2011-08-12 Thread PasTim

When I add a file to my library and use Music Folder to find it and play
it, or maybe go back and select another one, SB usually decides to
rescan my library. This means I can't try out my new track for however
long SB decides to scan for since it will not respond.

This is driving me crackers. I want to be in control - not be unable
to listen to my stuff for 10-15 minutes. I may decide I don't like the
track and ditch it. I have been trying out various techniques for
recording LPs, and this SB behaviour is making it a real pain.

Logitech please provide an option to only ever scan on manual request.

I'm currently on SB 7.6.1 33048 (i.e. the newset) due to scanning
problems with earlier releases.

I am now on 7.6.1 - r33048, and ran a full scan (11 minutes - getting

The custom scan is now much quicker - around 1 hour for my 14,500

There don't seem to be any log entries for the Custom Scan, which

[SlimDevices: Plugins] DynamicPlaylist: questions re browsing and saving

2011-08-12 Thread netchord

So, I've installed both TrackStat and DynamicPlaylist, and am running
7.6.1. my goal is to be able to create *and save* dynamicplaylists
based on a combination of genre and playcount, ie never played songs in
Jazz Vocal.

from the SS web interface, I can browse DynamicPLaylists--Genres--All
Genres--Jazz Vocal, and then choose the stat Never Played Songs and
load the result into the play queue. works beautifully.

however, i cannot find a way to save this result set as a
DynamicPlaylist. the only options are Play, or add to queue.

2nd, in any interface other than the web interface, browsing as above
stops at All Genres. This true whether I use a Controller, iPeng,
and the LT iPad app, or indeed, drill down via the transporter's or
Boom's front panel controls.

the result is that I can load All genres, but this means i get opera,
jazz, classic rock, countryeverything, mixed together in one
playlist. not a very satisfying experience.

is there a way to enable browsing the full path above via other control
interfaces? this would go a long way towards mitigating the inability
to save a particular rule set as a DP.

thx/netchord

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Vanishing Performers

2011-08-12 Thread rat

Hello Erland, I have a standing problem with the ''performers'' (as I
designate the interpreters - aka singers - in operas and oratorios).
After having followed the instructions (setup browse menu - setup
dynamic menu - setup support for custom tags) I have all the
performers in the Song info page (see screenshot A). After a variable
but short period I find that the the performers have vanished (see
screenshot B, taken 10 days later). The names are still in the
database, if you click on ''performers'' in the standard or in the
custom browse menu you get them all - but they have disappeared from
the song info page. Why? What happened to the plugins?
I have done nothing to the program, I still run 7.5.5. and still use
custom scan (2.11.3358) and custom browse (2.8.3363) plugins.
Can you help me ? Regards

Hi Gordon,

I'm hoping you can give me some pointers on setup.
I have *almost* everything working just as I wish. I have
SrvrPowerCtrl EOD setup to suspend the server after 15 mins between 8pm
and 5am.

What I would like to do is set up the system idle monitor to watch the
server/players and go to suspend if the players aren't playing for 45
minutes.

So far, I can get SPC to suspend the server after 30 minutes, but it
does so regardless of whether anything is playing. I also found that
these settings interfered with EOD, such that EOD would act after 15
minutes even if something is being player.

Attached is a screen cap of my settings page. Which options under
System Idle Monitor should I set? How do they relate to EOD? How does
Monitor the system for idle conditions work with Monitor Idle
Squeezebox Players?

Thanks for any help!

Chris

music in parallel, but which now don't let you play music at the same
 time.

For now I will have to set custom scans to entirely manual and trigger
them only when I want to.

The only solution to this is that I add support for new/changed rescans
also in Custom Scan, this would be possible in 7.6 and it is something I
eventually like to do, the problem is just to get the time and
inspiration to do it since I never use Music Folder browsing myself and
due to this doesn't have the issues you have in my own setup. It's also
a pretty big change of the Custom Scan code so it will take a lot of
time to implement and test it.

So it might be solved sometime in the future but it's unlikely to be
solved in the near future.

thanks, found it, and created an advanced playlist that seems to do
this (can't tell if it gets dynamically updated.)

however, once creating and saving Advanced as Jazz Vocal i can't go
back and create a similar one for Rock: Americana or some other

So, the lesson I learned here is that with large libraries you need to

 ContentDirectory service defines two actions
called Browse() and Search().
Many client applications ignore the Search action and instead use only
the Browse action to download a local image of the remote content
directory into a local database, and then they use their own search
algoritms to find things within that local image database.

From your description, it sounds like the Revue is doing just this...

The benefit is that once the local image is built, the searches can be
faster and more sophisticated. The disadvantage is that it takes time
to build the local image in the first place.

I guess I'm not understanding the issue. I create lots of different
playlists this way, mostly genre based, and I end up with lots of
different (distinct) dynamic playlists saved in the dynamic playlists
section under the random/ category.

You are CREATING these dynamic playlists within SQL playlists under
extras right? Then saving with unique names. Then you PLAY them by
selecting under my music/dynamic playlists.

Hm, are you trying to install the plugin in 7.6?
Generally, that is a bit of an outdated question :)

Actually I deprecated the plugin for Squeezebox Server 7.6 since some
things would need updating and don't work anymore. Before that, you
could install the plugin through the Plugins section in the web
interface (Settings-Plugins-3rd Party Plugins, it used to be in the
list of recommended plugins then.

But actually there's now a native (App Store) App of iPeng for almost
three years now. Ok, it's not free, though, but almost nobody still
used the web app.

Actually if you wanted to use iPeng with 7.6 you would indeed have to
install it manually using the zip-file.

If you want your enhancement request (wishlist) to get noticed you
should post it at bugs.slimdevices.com. Although that system is
primarily for bugs, it is also the appropriate place to put enhancement
requests like this. To be honest, I think the very small dev team has
their hands full with much more critical features of the software, so I
strongly doubt they'll take up the request. But maybe a 3rd party
developer would be interested. So it's good you posted here, too,
although seeing only 1-2 responses over the past 4 years, it doesn't
exactly look like a hot item.

I suspect the background scheduling is more aggressive in 7.6 compared
to 7.5 making it prioritize Custom Scan background scanning before
handling the music. This is great as long as you don't play music but
as you say it causes problem if you like to simultaneously play music.

Do I understand correctly that the issue is that you can play music but
gets very choppy and isn't possible to listen to ?

If so, I'll have to test it in my own environment and see if it would
be possible to somehow lower the priority of the background scanning if
music is playing. The result will probably be that the scanning when
playing music will take more time time but the advantage is that you
can enjoy music while it's playing and this is probably preferred by
most users.
