[PEDA] Simulation Setup

2002-01-15 Thread Jason Morgan

Hi,

I've used the Protel SPICE Simulator many times in the past, but not for a
while.

Just come to do an AC analysis of a filter and the Simulation Setup dialogue
box
ignores my instructions.

I know I've had this problem before, just can't remember how to fix it.
I seem to remember it writes a file containing the settings in the dialogue
for
passing to the simulator, just can't remember where.

I do:
Simulation-Setup-Check AC Analysis
Close Dialogue, Open it again

The setting is cleared.

I recall this can happen if for some reason it can't write the file, just
can't remember if this
is the truth and if so what and where the file is - any clues?

Jason.

The settings are stored in a [schematic_name].cfg file, which usually is
located in the same folder as the schematic (when using the ddb-system).

Re: [PEDA] SMT resistor array footprints and usage?

2002-01-15 Thread Bryn Wolfe

As everybody else has indicated, you are best to create your own. I'll assume you are
getting your parts (or at least have seen the parts) in a Digikey catalog. I've used
the footprints for the Panasonic EXB-A and EXB-V8V footprints as they are called out
in the catalog and they worked fine. As somebody else suggested, unless you are doing
reflow soldering you may have some continuity problems with the cupped leads these
packages offer. Great for reflow, bad for inspection or hand soldering.

Matt Polak wrote:

 Hey all,

Rather dumb question here, but I'm stumped. Can someone enlighten me as to
where the footprints for surface-mount chip resistor arrays are, and how I
would set them up against my schematic? I want to use something like an EZA
or EXB series resistor array to help cut down on component count/size in a
rather demanding layout, but I can't seem to find anything other than the
standard discreet SMT footprints (1206, 0805, etc) that I've been using
 thus far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I assume that I must be missing
 something stupid.

This one usually helps:

Uninstall P99SE and servicepacks.
Reboot
Remove all instances of '99SE' from the registry.
Remove all directories on the harddrive that relates to P99SE
Reboot
Purge files *99SE*.* in the rootdirectory of your windows installation
(c:\winnt or c:\windows)

Now install P99SE and servicepacks again.

Re: [PEDA] Printer Issues (Ex: Tasking tools)

2002-01-15 Thread Bryn Wolfe

Yeah, it's an HP printer, but that's all we've got in the lab. Both are network
printers (direct to ethernet). What I don't get is why it works on one machine and
not the other. ATS
suggested that I make sure I've got the latest drivers. I'm checking on that now.
If I get this to work, I'll post a message to the forum indicating what works.

Ian Wilson wrote:

It seems almost all the printing problems are related to HP drivers both
PCL and Postscript - at least there is a lot of stuff on the Protel KB
about problems with printing and even loading schematic with HP printer
drivers. Check out the last 2 months of KB articles for a summary.

I came across this tonight on theor www site - and it has been fairly
regularly mentioned in the past on the forum. Question is is it HP's
problem or Protel's? (I know... our's... but in an ideal world which
company would be busy beavering away fixing it...)

Bryn , have you got any HP printer drivers installed?

Re: [PEDA] Printer Issues (Ex: Tasking tools)

2002-01-15 Thread Bagotronix Tech Support

Hello, all:

Printer FYI: I bought a Brother HL-1650 laser printer about a month ago.
So far it's been really good. It duplexes (prints on both sides of the
paper) and has a bypass tray for envelopes, labels, etc. W2K operation is
flawless so far, even with Protel. The printer is networked on a Win95
print server (sorry, I'm not yet brave/smart enough to put printers on the
Linux server). I had some initial difficulty with the Win9X drivers on
client machines, but this was just because the driver install was done over
the network. There was also a more recent driver on the Brother website,
which I downloaded. When I deleted the drivers from the clients and loaded
the drivers directly from each client instead of over the network, they
worked fine. I would recommend this printer to anyone who wants a duplexing
laser printer and doesn't want to pay HP's high price ($800). The Brother
printer was $500, and I got it on sale for $400.

I like the duplexing feature because this printer is also used to print
manuals and datasheets. Yes, I print PDF datasheets! I think electronic
documents are great, but I still like paper versions too. The paperless
office - what a concept!

The best to work with Protel was 'NEC Silentwriter2 90 v52.2'.

To prevent Protel from printing additional blank pages, turn off the 'Send CTRL-D
after each job'.

This postscript driver should drive most Postscript 2 3 laser printers.

dale does those ones with a gold color heat sink type body and nice
mounting ears, you can prob. get a 1.5 and a 3.0 ohms
that kind are real nice if you don't overpower them (a lot) at which

Re: [PEDA] Looking for a resistor supplier.

2002-01-15 Thread Jim Labrecque

Don't know if this will do it but Hosfelt Electronics has a 10 ohm/175 watt
resistor with an adjustable slider. My guess is that with the slider at the
4.5 ohm point, it would still provide an adequate rating.

www.hosfelt.com

part number 81-103 $6.95 on page 93 of catalog 2001-B

I need a 4.5 Ohm, 50 Watt resistor. For precision audio, any recommendations?

Re: [PEDA] SMT resistor array footprints and usage?

2002-01-15 Thread Matt Polak

Hey, you guys rock! :

Thanks so much to all of you for the helpful feedback concerning the
resistor question I posted the other evening. Doing a handful of designs
layouts in Protel thus far has been a big learning experience, I can
defiantly say I agree with creating the custom footprints/landpatterns that
multiple folks mentioned. After getting a DB25 connector footprint back on
a prototype featuring 30 mil holes for the mechanical locking clips (ouch!)
rather than something more like 90's, I have been extremely careful with
double-checking all footprints I lay down.

It's good to know that most folks simply prefer to create most footprints
from scratch rather than hunting them down. Glad to also hear that I wasn't
just missing something or doing something wrong - you usually tend to
assume it's a problem with the user when commercial software doesn't act as
it's supposed/intended to. :

Also, thanks for all of the varied responses, suggestions, and comments
concerning the resistor arrays, suggestions for footprint layout,
laser-printer 1:1 prints for double-checking, manufacturing suggestions,
and all of the other amazingly helpful material. I really wish I'd found
this list sooner!

Very best regards,
-- Matt

Re: [PEDA] Looking for a resistor supplier.

2002-01-15 Thread Tony Karavidas

What about Huntington Electric? The big-ass gold ones on page 591 of
Digikey? The have 50 watters in all the standard values. 1.5 and 3 as
someone suggested. They are $5 each.
