Ian,
We took a poll and Protel is number two in worldwide

OK, that's cool but the Z height only extrudes to one height, what's great
about the additional way Protel DXP2004 handles it, in addition to the Z
height option, is that you can add 3D models to a Protel library (from Molex
for example or from your own 3D CAD), then map the proper 3D model to
Bill,
I just talked to Mentor Graphics PADS division and they say that since the
1st release of PADS Software in 1985 they have logged 85,000 licenses.
PowerLogic (schematic) and PowerPCB (layout) are separate licenses.
There are currently 18,000 PADS-PowerPCB seats on yearly maintenance.
That is pretty interesting data gathered here. The interesting part is that
Cadence has been successful in trashing OrCAD from number 1 to a has been.
I doubt if PADs schematic has overtaken OrCad.

With regard to Orcad yes in it's day (DOS) it was the absolute best, hands

The last I heard just before Cadence purchased OrCAD, that OrCAD had sold

Well.actually OrCad and Protel are quite similar in the windows apps. I
dont know how OrCad sales have been since they sent their support to Asia.

Altiums Protel will never be number 1, it is just too cumbersome. Fine for
people who have plenty of time but little $$

Amen to that! I haven't used Protel that long, but overall, have been fairly
happy with it. I basically learned Protel99SE completely on my own and find
it to be a fairly intuitive package. Unfortunately, we're in the same boat
as many others on the list, where we are evaluating the upgrade to
I think I know the answer to this already, but here it goes anyways: Is
there anyway to get hierarchal designs to work when a component has 2
parts, and they go to the odd/even sub sheets? like if 1/2 of an opamp
goes to sheet 1, and the other half to sheet 2. Then these repeat 8 times?

Tom and All,
Surely there's someway of manipulating the library files in a text editor or
similar to make the translation of the overlay easier? Replace All in
Notepad?
There's plenty of text editors/hackers etc around or maybe someone can code
something (I'm no programmer at the best of times)

Or the seats could be like the ones I have.
I have 2 active seats of my own.
For each client that I have who specifies particular tools, I require them to supply
me with a
licensed seat of the tools (same version) as they use. For P99SE that totals 7. This

On a flyer I got from Altium about Jan, it said

Mike,
I've been using Orcad for a couple of months and I'd
say it's completely different from Protel.
Ver. 10 is not much different from ver.9.2. They had a
couple of bugs but quickly fixed them. I didn't need
any tech support for using the software so I can't say
how good it is.

No wonder. Orcad capture is compatible with PSPICE.
Many engineers use it mainly for that reason and then
you only need to add the footprints and load the
netlist. Orcad capture is also
