[PEDA] Protel viewer?
Hello, all: I've got to give a preliminary PCB placement to a customer. Of course PDF can be made, but is there a free Protel viewer that he can use? If so, what is it, and where do I get it? I find the simplist thing to do is to produce PDF copies of the SCH and PCB files. This means that they can only be veiwed and not edited by someone esle, and if you use PDF writer properly you can attach author infomation to the files and therefore mantain the IP of the design. Sorry I couldn't help and I didnt intentionally mean to sound
authoritative. Im definitely not an expert on Protel.
Heres a suggestion:
Print to a postscipt file printer and use ghostview or similar postscript
viewer to change to a pdf. Then you have a handy pdf to distribute.

so authoritative in your post but I certainly couldn't figure out how to do
it.
The problem with the cut-paste operation for schematics, someone
was
just at my desk and we were talking about it, you can't rotate the pasted
schematic in WORD. You are stuck with the landscape schematic in a portrait
page within Word. Unless you change the section formatting in WORD to do
the
one page as landscape. Some people bitch a bit about this solution because
then all of their header and footer information gets changed to the sides
of
the page as well.

If you want a "softcopy" of a schematic by putting it in a program such as
Word you can just use copy/cut/paste commands.
There is also an add-on called klipper - distibuted by desktop-eda
(www.desktop-eda.com.au) - which allows:
-PCB and PCB Library Editor:
-Copy and paste to and from the Windows clipboard
-Place bitmaps and Window Metafiles into you PCB or PCB library
documents

-Schematic and Schematic Library Editor:
-Paste from the Windows Clipboard
-An alternative to the Protel Place Graphic command that stores the
image in your document
-Place the objects on the Windows clipboard as a graphic image (which
you can re-size)

the metafile output for PCB prints but can't find hide nor hair of anything
similar in schematics. Even searched through the Protel help (as if I
expected that to actually work) and the only references that it came up

For the schematic viewing you could use the metafile output capability of the schematic editor. Metafiles can be open by such programs as Word, etc. Gerber viewers are probably the best way to view pcbs because, as mentioned in other posts, there are no programs that will read a Protel PCB file. Graphicode have a gerber viewer that is free - GC-Preview - go to www.graphicode.com. There isn't one yet. It has been requested many times. I'm using Acrobat to print into a *.pdf file which I give to my customers. The acrobat is available at http://www.adobe.com/ for a few 100$. I asked this same question about 2 months ago. I'm sorry I didn't save the response that helped me, so I can give that responder a plug. What worked for me was to download "Camcad Vision Demo" from router Solutions www.RSI-ins.com. It will allow you 30 days trail. You can measure, pan, print, see net names, whatever for 30 days on a single pc. It's great if you can get you pcb done in that time. This program is capable of reading and viewing many programs, not just Protel. If you wanted to purchase this program, Router Solutions wanted..I think $8,000. OUCH! They apparently don't want to sell many of these. Good luck!
