Re: [QUAD-L] the show today on Dr. Phil about superbug scare
We do not watch Dr. Phil anymore. Haven't for two years. Prior to that he had a great show going on but then he turned sensationalistic. And there are commercials every six minutes. BUT I remembered getting a notice from his website and that THAT topic (MRSA) would be covered with individuals with first-hand experience. Dr. Phil said that he did not want to sensationalize it but he did not want to trivialize it either. In our opinion... he did sensationalize it. But, besides that and for those who did not watch it ... MRSA is 85% of hospital acquired (I added the 5%) and 15% community acquired. Which is exactly why I stay out of hospitals! Further, we really don't think the blonde girl was diagnosed correctly. MRSA makes you terribly, terribly sick or kills you with any few days. She probably DOES have some sort of infection going but we highly doubt that it is MRSA. She certainly would not be looking that well or going for so long without being horribly sick. Just our humble opinion. But acquiring methicillin-resistant staph aureus is pretty much a death sentence. But we and/or the doctors have done that to ourselves over the last xx number of years. Keeping everything as clean as possible? Bleach will kill just about anything and that is why I have turned to using that for the last 20 years or so. There is not a product out there that will kill like bleach does. Companies like to (LOVE TO) advertise that their product is a super safeguard but, hey, it makes them a buck. [QUAD-L] MRSA
Lots of people say they have had it or are carriers. The reason it is called methiline-resistant is because it is resistant to ALL antibiotics. And that is also why it is called the superbug. If someone was told that they had MRSA and was given an antibiotic and it took care of it... it had to be an infection of another sort. MRSA is resistant to all the antibiotics on the market today. That is WHY it is such a huge concern. But if a lay person is unable to read their own lab reports, etc. (which is most people)... doctors can tell their patients anything and most of the time people believe them. Truthfully... I don't think doctors want to start a panic so that is why they tell patients what they do. Or they are required by law to say this or that not to start a panic. WRONG! MRSA means it is RESISTANT to all cillin-like antibiotics. Re: [QUAD-L] rehab doctor/weight/everything etc.... Happy Birthday to Quadius
Congratulations Billy, I hope you have a wonderful day. You are doing good with your weight. Luckily I don't have much of a belly but I know I don't have much of a waist anymore. I keep my belly fairly flat controlled with my diet. I used to be 5' 6 115-120 and now I am 130. My weight has fluctuated from time to time even though I try to on a low-fat diet. Atrophy seems to make arms, legs and stomach appear larger with no muscle tone. I have to go to a hospital that I don't usually go to the rehab department to get weighed and they rarely have someone to help. The last time they gave us a extrawide wheelchair for someone 300 pounds to transfer into. You can imagine how difficult that would be with a sliding board. It is hard to accurate with your weight when something is added to your chair that you cannot move. How do others get weighed? Dana In a message dated 4/5/2008 2:43:24 P.M. I only had to spend 2 days in the hospital--- here is my short story of the kinda bad experience... the 1st night a nurse shot an empty siringe of air into my stomach, then said oh my gosh I forgot to put the heperin blood thinner in there. That kinda scared me but they said it would not hurt me. Then the same nurse was told to draw 2 large vials of blood for tests and 2 small vials--- well half thru she said oh my gosh hand on don't move... I forgot all the vials, and ran from the room,, then returned with more vials saying I'm so sorry all this is happening because i'm a very competent nurse. ( Me and my wife were getting scared and was not sure she was competent ! ) lol Then later the next shift nurse put in an IV for antibiotics and it blew my vein that night causing my arm to swell up very large and could not get a vein to work in my other arm after 3 or 4 tries. So then they let me just stay overnight, without any fluids or antibiotics and said they were giving me a PICC LINE the next day. Well they gave me a zanex to make me relaxed and the Lady came in and put the picc line in so easily with NO PROBLEMS ! I did'nt even feel a thing ! Thanks!!! to all who gave me advice about the PICC line--- A home care nurse came today and taught my wife how to give the antibiotics- flush and Etc. and we just finished our 1st home treatment.man it is so nice this way and probably safer than in the hospital with careless nurses. -- Thanks Again all ! now I will not be so scared of a picc line in the future. [QUAD-L] Killing MRSA
For those with time, Wikipedia has a very accurate and extensive article on MRSA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrsa It describes both HA and CA strains and what kills them. Also, the rates of infection, where, when, how, who, etc. and the extents of virulence (ability to spread and/or mutate for further resistance). Best! --Tod
Re: [QUAD-L] MRSA
MessageVancomyosin Bactrim (sulfa) also treat MRSA. There's also another antibiotic that I took with the Bactrim that starts with an R, can't remember the name, but I think Tod mentioned it in his post. Mine was cleared up in 14 days. Re: [QUAD-L] the show today on Dr. Phil about superbug scare
The 19-year-old girl on the Dr. Phil show had the community based MRSA the same as I had and I was not terribly, terribly sick either. I could have potentially got that way just as Dr. Phil was worried about this girl and being treated sooner than she was being treated. My aunt (who I believe gave me the community-based MRSA had the same big swelling bumps under her armpits and then later on her stomach and was never very sick or close to death either. It CAN be treated and is curable. I think it depends on how you contracted it, how well your immune system is, and how long you let it go without being treated that depends on how you respond to the antibiotics they are giving people for this superbug.
