Where are you Darren? I work at Panasonic. Stones throw from inchape. Maybe
I'm unlucky but I found inchape to be pretty awful to get parts from always
demanding reg numbers and the like, sounds like you got a good guy though
as to what
to check next.

interchangeable though I would double check the driveshaft retaining
method first - either 6 cap head screws or a snap ring on the end of
the splined inner cv joint that engages within the diff and try to
match them up

The XR2 single piece shaft should fit straight on with it's matching
joints (not the same as the 1.4).
As Matthew says they do reduce torque steer.
Is this a joint with 6 or 8 bolts holding it together ?, if so the
bearing carrier unbolts from the rest of the shaft and you should be
able to
