[qubes-users] A quick survey on usage patterns?

2020-12-27 Thread Alex Smirnoff

Hi everyone,

anyone willing to share how do you use Qubes environment: tempaltes, VMs,
etc?
I think besides "tinfoil hat" community many of us do still use traditional
services like dropbox, g suite, signal, telegram etc.

How do you manage that? A signle VM for several apps? One VM per app? How
do you print? How do you scan?

As for myself, I have several "per-project" VMs with VPNs and corporate
messengers, and also a shared one with stuff like evernote and dropbox. I
removed skype, webex, zoom etc from my work desktop -- I use iPad for all
of those. I do not even have a webcam and microphone on my work system.
However, sending a link from the desktop (Qubes) to iPad is not as easy as
I wish it to be, and the same applies to importing a file. You?

Soo, I gave it a try and guess what? MS Office artifacts are still there,
with freerdp it is even worse than with native seamless mode. Apparently
(even if I check "turn hardware graphics acceleration off") Office uses
some obscure DirectX calls that translate to X11 in very unpleasant way
that is very unfriendly to window decorator metrics, sloppy focus and
virtual desktops. I remember I had similar problems with Wine/Crossover as
well.

Damn it, this group auto moderation kills messages with imgur hyperlinks on
spot, however..
I gave it a try and it is even worse. Artifacts of the same origin appear
on MS Office windows with freerdp just like with seamless mode. Apparently
it uses some DirectX calls that translate to X11 methods that are extremely
unfriendly to sensible desktop environment with virtual desktops, sloppy
focus and custom window decorations.

Assuming poor software quality of typical TV firmware and codecs, DVB
should be pretty easy exploitable. However, I doubt a compromised TV could
do serious harm to your computer via HDMI. Speaking on your demo.. there is
a lot of factors to be involved. Chaining a Xen exploit to Chrome might be
possible.. but unprobable, for a multitude of reasons.

[qubes-users] xen resource reporting

2020-11-26 Thread Alex Smirnoff
It is rather a xen issue, but I did not find xen groups alive enough, so..

I have a 6-core cpu, so.. xen thinks there are two "CPU's" per core,
probably due to HT.
And it does, apparently, cause a lot of confusion.

from "xenpm start 1:
Socket 0
 Core 0 CPU 0
 Core 1 CPU 2
 Core 2 CPU 4
 Core 3 CPU 6
 Core 4 CPU 8
 Core 5 CPU 10

But, when I try to get CPU states, xenpm assumes the core count to the cpu
count! thus, it tries to get status of CPU0-CPU5, which succeeds only for
even CPUs, odd CPUs get dropped and return error when xenp tries to control
them, and CPU6-CPU10 are ingored.

also, xenpm get-cpufreq-para returns obviously incorrect values (for even
CPUs only, again, for odd ones it just "falied to get cpufreq parameter"
and 6-10 are igored), as well as xentop. At the same time, values at
get-cpufreq-average are apparently right.

Is it a known issue?

[qubes-users] Re: Intel CPU frequency scaling and boost mode?

2020-11-12 Thread Alex Smirnoff
Ah. As I said, it is all tricky. First, enable legacy boot. It is greyed
out in bios setup; you need to turn off "modern standby" first. Now you can
boot.

But, it is going to be 800x600 and no network (neither wired or wireless).
On the next step you need a USB network card. Once you get *some* network,
do sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest kernel-latest-qubes-vm. Then edit
/boot/efi/EFI/qubes/xen.cfg
and get rid of rhgb, it is broken.
And if you are lucky, you now have a working system!

I wonder why Qubes does not have offline update mechanism or more recent
installation media. All this crazy stuff reminds me of installing Slackware
in 1996 on a random hardware from local flea market.

[qubes-users] Intel CPU frequency scaling and boost mode?

2020-11-05 Thread Alex Smirnoff

Hi fellow qubes users,

I just installed (not to say it was easy) Qubes on gen10 intel NUC.
It has a "mobile" type CPU, 1.6Ghz with turbo boost up to 4GHz.
However, Xentop never shows frequencies higher than 1.6 no matter if I have
a CPU-intensive task or not. Does turbo boost work as expected?

Also, I have an arduino-based analog meter controlled by USB I used on my
previous systems to collect and display system load metering. However, most
of the data is available in dom0 only. What is the best practice to send it
to an AppVM?

Now, that's strange! my dom0 is on the latest kernel, but sys-net is not,
so, no network there.

apparently I messed with the keyboard somehow, I cannot type in the password.
it ignores all keystrokes :(

Sent from my BlackBerry -- I don't believe it's more secure, but I've got a
physical keyboard!

Good.

It's same for me, I see the corrupted image on each boot (since 6 months
now), but (on my host) it's only a display problem, I can give the disk
password (you should see the bullet [3] for each character) and the boot
process continues. Note that this step concerns giving the LUKS
credentials (not the user password!), and the GUI you see is Plymouth
[1] with this artwork [2].

You can't switch to tty (text console) because the boot process is on
the LUKS uncryption step, so the rootfs isn't yet available (so the init
process isn't launch and neither the login process).

Don't worry, Qubes OS on NUC10 is stable, I use it daily.

I agree an ISO image with, on start, the choice between default or
latest kernel will be great.

Ah, apparently it was just a glitch, second time I tried my keyboard
remained functional.
However, still no luck: after I updated dom0 to the latest kernel, my Qubes
system just got stuck on "Enter disk password" stage. I see some corrupted
image below which slightly changes over time, and that's it. And I cannot
switch to text console to see what is happening there like I could on a
regular linux. WIll try booting from a rescue image now. Anyway, Qubes on
NUC10 is apparently very unstable. I wonder why there is no ISO image with
the latest kernel already in place.

How did you set up the sys-usb qube without losing the USB keyboard and
mouse?
