I am a convert, sort of. When I first laid eyes on the MIT Atlantis, I
recoiled in horror. I didn't know what to make of the long chainstays and
the ever more sloping top tubes. Now, having purchased a Clem H and MIT
Atlantis I do see benefits, but as everyone is pointing out, there are some
I turned to photography during my riding downturns. Kids make for ready
models and the technology scratched the itch to fiddle with something
mechanical. Landscape photography got me out and moving again. When you
heal, you can combine both hobbies by riding to shoots.

Thanks John and everybody else! Even with the longer chain and the big pulley
wheel on the Altus, it gets a little nutty in the big-big and small-small
combos. And yes, I think Riv should put a note on website that certain
drivetrains might require a longer chain.

So, I bought an MIT Atlantis from a fellow member of the bunch, and am learning
the pros and cons of those eeeaaalllyyy long chainstays. They provide a
nice comfy ride, but caused me some head scratching when it came to fitting a
chain. I set up the Atlantis as traditional rambler/tourer
I think 28mm tires is the widest you're gonna be able to safely run on the
Roadini. I tried a couple of plastic and metal fenders and found that with
Soma Vitesse tires Handsome's metal fenders gave me the most clearance, but
the difference between metal and plastic was negligible; it's all

I find that in the NE, once the roads are treated it doesn't take much
moisture for the brine to coat the drive train and frame even in "dry"
conditions. If I ride a bike without fenders, I always wipe the frame and
cranks down afterwards.

You might want ask Riv if the Roadini would fit the bill. I really enjoy the
San Marcos and find that the Roadini has a similar but “less stout” feel. It
may just be the wheels /tires combo, but that’s my perception. The Roadeo is

For me it comes down to whether fenders means I can ride vs. not ride. I’m
lucky enough to have both fendered and non-fendered choices. I put fenders on
my go fast Roadini and now I ride it in snotty weather and wet roads which
means I enjoy it more.

I would hate to see legit FS threads chased away. 2 of my beloved Rivs and one
gem of a Heron found new homes with me through this forum. I do more lurking
than contributing and I know some good people who sell things here are in the
same category. A big part of why I come here is to hit the
+1 on the beeswax recommendation. A tiny piece softened in your fingers and
pushed into the threads will create the friction you need to keep the bolt from
loosening.

I’ve used one of those on my Ram with an Ostrich bag. It’s okay but there are
limits. Since the bag sits high and hangs off the bars, it can effect
steering/wheel flop. Also, the platform is small, so you can’t load up the
bag with heavy items or the bag will sag. It’s good to carry light

Can’t help with your sizes, but thanks to Grant I went from a 57 to 54 and it’s
right on the money. I have an 85 Pbh and ride a 58 Ram with bars level to
saddle. The head tube and angles bring the bars up and back on the Roadini.

In order to shift my chain to the largest cog of a 10 Speed cassette using a
Silver shifter, I need to move the lever almost parallel to the down tube.
Enlarging the barrel, like the VO version of the DiaCompe shifter, requires

I bought the original proto Rom built by Nobilette a couple of years back. Its
seat tube decal was a paper transfer that basically disintegrated. When I
contacted Riv for decals, they sent me protovelo decals but no Rom decals. I
hope they find some for you. Please let us know how you make
Friction shifting more than 9 sprockets is too much of a pain for me. Even
with a 9 speed cassette, I find that friction shifting is a bit finicky. I
use the DiaCompe 11 spd DT shifter on my 9 speed setup and find that the
big barrel of the shifter makes for easier/smoother shifting.

I'd go easy on the Proofhide, and would not use it until you've ridden the
saddle a bit. The "new" B17 uses a less thick hide than the older version
IMHO, so they tend to break in quicker. Also, resist the urge to touch the
tension bolt.

I think Bill Lindsay was making a kind offer to buy and hold a backup set
of the V1 shifters for me. It's nice to know the Walnut Creek Gang has my
back. Call me a crank, but I just hate when good things are "improved" out
of their original purpose. Ah well. Progress.
