[RBW] Demise of Mr. Metric

2018-06-13 Thread Ron Mc
I was hunting Nordlock washers last evening and ran across bad news - the
parent company for Mr. Metric has closed this operation. I understand it
became less than cost-effective for them to sell piecemeal metric
fasteners, but I was their greatest fan and, holy cow, they had everything
- even found M7 nylock there for the back end of my Berthoud decaleur.

Fastenall with their less-friendly website remains in business, and
McMaster is still the choice for bulk fasteners and quality tools.

[RBW] Re: and a triple crank?

2018-06-13 Thread Michael Hechmer
In deciding on hardware most riders focus on the high and low, but it's
also important to consider the shifting pattern. I have found that steps
between rings of either 10 or 14 work better than 12 or 13. A shift of 10
puts you 1 rear click from the next gear and 14 is 2 clicks. Often in
rolling terrain, like the Vt hills I ride in that 14 drop is perfect or
just one click. On my Rambouliet I run a 44/30 with an 11 - 30 cluster
which gives me a good hi gear and a decent low gear for a lightweight bike.
On my Saluki, which often carries more stuff I run a 48/34/26 with a 12 -
28. This also gives me both a good range, decent spacing and a simple
pattern. GPs recommendation of a 46/36/26 also makes a lot of sense. I
like a change of between 10 & 15% between gears.

Re: [RBW] Re: and a triple crank?

2018-06-13 Thread Ron Mc
Steve is correct that a sequential triple works best with a narrow
freewheel/cassette - you would hope any 9sp and greater cassette has narrow
steps designed-in, but they usually don't - they usually have
two-tooth-steps at the small cog end.
I like my devised half-steps with wide rear
,

and by definition, these work best following a different shifting algorithm
than the sequential triple - there is no crossover, except on the granny
ring - this is also the same with the compact double. .
I pick on my friends who never use their front derailleurs. I used my FD
even on my Campy road double, 52/39T, 13-26t. I shift FD for stop-and-go,
and use rear for secondary adjustment.

The goal is wide range with narrow, useful steps - 5-8 inches for your
steps, especially in the range from about 60 to 80 inches, which is
where we mostly live.

Another goal is to minimize duplicates -
with a poorly designed drivetrain, you can have so many duplicates
that you have many fewer gears than you think you have.

Another important consideration is the crossover point.  It's nice not
to be forced by angularity or simply running out of gears to shift chain
rings in the middle of the range Ron speaks of.  Some chain ring
combinations force a shift as soon as the ground starts to rise, so
you're constantly changing back and forth for minor terrain undulations;
while others let you ride all day in the middle range and only require a
chain ring shift for serious hills.

Re: [RBW] Portugal’s Algarve?

Thanks Steve. From what I can tell Portugal is (re)building out a great deal of
biking infrastructure. Apparently, in 1950 50% of all highway transit was by
bicycle. Like everywhere else in the industrialized world, this % has dropped
dramatically ever since. Like Holland, Portugal is attempting a comeback. I’m
tentatively planning 200-300 miles of paved and dirt (no-car) trail riding down
the western coast. ~Sean

[RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-06-13 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Even though many of the guesses are 75 percent accurate, this bike is bound
to disappoint throngs, but not by intent. There is already tons of variety
in mtn bikes. More than a dozen categories--jumpers, pumpers, xc, dh,
hardtails, fat, plus, e, enduro... No matter what we do, there's going to
be some overlap, and it's going to be both too much and not enough,
depending. There will be some THINGS that it doesn't excel at, but it's
more the rider than the bike, anyway--right?
The record descent of Repack Road (fire trail in Marin County on which 95
percent of the original mtn bike development took place in the late '70s)
is 4:22 for all 2 miles and 1,300 feet of it. In late '76 Gary Fisher did
that on a modified paperboy bike with a coaster brake. About 8 years
later, (sorry for the history!) daredevil downhiller Jimmy Deaton, rode it
on a then-SOA bike in 4:34.
Those are the facts that feed the notion that the measure of a bike and a
rider is speed, which I think is way off. When you design for extreme
speeds or terrain or surfaces (sand, snow, boulders...) you get an extreme
bike that psychologizes normal riders into thinking they're worse for being
normal and let's them buy their way into the glorified extreme world and
look ready for action on the way back from Trader Joe's.

The plan with the new bike—which may not even happen—is that it's a
sufficient platform and maybe no more, for lots of non-extreme trail
riding, and it's sufficiently different than our other bikes to be barely
justifiable.

[RBW] Re: Low/No Carb Electrolyte?

2018-06-13 Thread ascpgh
You do have to have some glucose in an electrolyte/rehydration solution.
It's about the cellular level of respiration and moving electrolytes across
membranes.

Potassium is normally intracellular, sodium extracellular. By use of
energy, these ions are kept on opposite sides of a cell's outer membrane to
provide a functional potential.

Potassium is transported through the sodium/potassium "pumps" of cellular
membranes, into the cells, better in the presence of insulin. Production of
insulin by the Islet of Langerhans cells of the pancreas occurs in response
to the presence of glucose in the blood stream, as detected and responded
to with insulin released into the blood stream.

Your electrolyte balances will remain in dyscrasia despite specific oral
supplementations if they are without the crutch of some sugar to trigger
increased production of insulin. Google recipes on pickling and you'll see
vinegar salt and sugar which will reinforce your comprehension of why
pickle juice is a recommendation for rehydration or electrolyte
replenishment.

Sorry, droning. I just worked six 13 hour days in a row.

Andy, thanks for your response. I have read about that before and understand it
as well as someone who got an A in high school biology class, but has no

water. I have not experienced the bonk when drinking my electrolyte solution.
In neither case do I think I was seriously dehydrated, but I may have been low

2018-06-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
Paul asked where I read that Tour de France riders drank coke and OJ in the
early 1980s.

It was probably in Bicycling magazine or maybe Winning. I read both of those in
those years. It might have been in a Sean Kelly bio, because I remember reading
about the coke-can practical joke he would play. They’d get their musette at
the feed zone, which always included a can of coke. He’d dump the van of coke
into his water bottle and then reach down and drag the empty van on the ground.
The sound was exactly like the sound of a pedal going into somebody’s spokes so
it would scare the bejeezus out of the peloton.

[RBW] Re: Low/No Carb Electrolyte?

2018-06-13 Thread ascpgh
Christopher, (Response apologetically delayed by air travel, car rental and
driving to my mother's home) The sodium depletion is something most folks
are less sensitive to when sweat-depleting electrolytes. Physiologic
situations differ, bigger people will tend to sweat out more sodium. Some
people just have odd sweat composition, I had a customer who had very high
acetic acid content in his sweat and corroded front derailleurs into
dysfunction and etched cranksets with his perspiratory output. Weird. Just
part of nature wonderful variability.

Potassium always gets equal billing with sodium in general discussions
(that "pump" in membrane walls), but it is lots more troubling when out of
balance because of the difficulty normalizing compared to sodium. This is
mostly because of where it is normally, inside the cells, not just in the
extracellular juice of your body.

When I have a patient with low potassium the basic answer is IV fluid with
dextrose and potassium because the potassium will follow the dextrose into
the cells. This is not done quickly as compensations occur when those
levels get off and rapid normalization can produce equally harmful
electrolyte imbalances in that setting. If a potassium level has dropped so
fast that it isn't compensated by the body, bad things start to happen.
Patients in that situation will get what we call "K-runs" or potassium
infusions and often require ICU level care for the acuity of monitoring as
the electrolytes normalize and the infusions themselves...potassium has a
high rate of making an IV site go bad and any resulting extravasation into
surrounding tissue is bad.

A good primer on the exercise induced imbalances (even though they're
plugging their electrolyte solutions):
http://saltstick.com/2017/05/24/potassium-important-exercise-performance/

Sweat isn't the only culprit in potassium depletion:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/symptoms/low-potassium/basics/causes/sym-20050632
All
the stuff people eat/drink in response to exercise that isn't at all a part
of their normal balance of intake and can cause enteral "dumping", a fancy
way to say diarrhea. That and vomiting are major causes of lost potassium,
the biggest concern is smooth muscle dysfunction (think cramps). not what
you want your bowels, vasculature, airway walls or heart to start doing.

This electrolyte depletion/repletion thing is serious stuff if you are
sweating heavily for more than an hour. There is a time and place for
banner statements but it behooves anyone participating in such activity to
know if they are predisposed to any particular depletion, be it sodium
because they are big or potassium because they are on an entry level
antihypertensive with a diuretic component.

Knowing how to tend to your fluid/electrolyte situation under normal
regular activity stress can be a bit of trial and error. You will do some
kidney harm if you don't supply your renal function with some water to
excrete with the wastes removed by renal function. Your doctor checks BUN
and Cr annually to see your baseline renal excretion performance, but under
exercise stress they will rise as you dehydrate and produce muscle
breakdown byproducts to be removed from your circulatory volume. If that
goes overboard, you *will* learn about rhabdomyolysis.

Eesh, I gotta stop and go to bed, after I drink a big glass of water.

[RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-06-13 Thread Kieran J
Is there any reason to believe longer (i.e., Riv-long) chainstays would be
a good feature on an MTB? Didn't the Bombadil have relatively short ones?
Many rigid MTB builders such as Waltworks insist on shorter stays. Now, MTB
can include many variations of riding off-road, so I suppose there could be
vastly different designs for each style of riding. Does LONN have a
place in there somewhere? I personally can't see how long chainstays would
be a good fit on a trail bike.

Interesting. In photos, Bomba rear wheels have always looked more "tucked"

[RBW] Thumb Shifter Opinions - IRD Silver SOS vs Microshift 9 sp.

2018-06-13 Thread Paul Clifton
I've got some hail mary money burning a hole in my pocket and a bike that I
want to put thumb shifters on. Has anyone here used both the IRD Silver SOS
and Microshift 9 sp shifters that Riv sells. Is there a clear winner?

1. I doubt I'll want to index, so that doesn't matter.

2. I have the Silver bar ends, and I don't find them dreamy, but they're
good. So that's not a clear plus.

3. I like that the Silvers have the hinged clamp and a shim for whatever
size bar.

4. Silvers are in stock (again, finally!). Microshift aren't.

5. Microshift are cheaper.

So unless the Microshift just have a super feel or some other thing I'm not
thinking of, I'll order up the Silvers. But I'd love to hear some opinions.

Oh, what a fun contemplation! I know what she’d want. She’d want the Clementine

hisI think she’d love hers in red. Which they don’t come in, but this is my
fantasy, so you have to indulge me. Red step-through bikes are so romantic. She
would want front and rear racks and baskets. She called today and said she
really, really wants to ride his bike and feels the pull to have one of her
very own. He’s so big that she can barely pedal his Clem, and only on tip-toe,
unless she lowers his seat, which I think he’d frown on. Time will tell! I do
think it’s very possible she ends up with one; they bike commute 5 miles one
way, so have need of good bikes. Once you’ve had the pleasure of a Rivendell
ride, it’s hard to go back. I shall be at her service when she decides she must
have one.

Side note: If I had my way, my bike would be red with cream accents. Delicious.

why not match the big ring to the small cog for what will be your highest
gear inches, e.g if comfortable with 104 gi, and a 11T cog, 700x32s gives a
large ring of 42T (102gi). Spa Cycles in UK sells XD2 cranks with TA rings
in sizes from 40 to 52 in 110mm BCD. A 42/34/24 would give maximum gi
range. A 42/36/24 gives maximum gi range and almost half step gearing due
to limiting the big ring to 42.

[RBW] Thumb Shifter Opinions - IRD Silver SOS vs Microshift 9 sp.

2018-06-13 Thread Joe Bernard
I've used the Microshift 9 in friction and Siver downtubers on thumbie mounts.
They're close enough in function that I would pick the one I liked the looks
and mounting of the best.

[RBW] Banana Sax alternate mounting, matchy matchy

2018-06-13 Thread Joe Bernard
Taking a cue from Grant's plethora of front-mounted Bananas, I gave it a whirl
on my Lightning Bolt with a matching olive Saddlesack. He's right about it
loading better in the front handlebar position, it's really handy up there. The
combination with small Saddlesack makes a great rackless fenderless summer bike
which can still carry all your stuff..I highly recommend it. Enjoy,
matchy-matchers!

[RBW] Re: New Dia Compe 610 Centerpull Brakes?

2018-06-13 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I tried and failed to use these on the Frank Jones Sr. They fit the front
just fine, but nowhere near enough reach for the rear. I've been saving
them for another project, as they're pretty nice looking, though the
rounded edges of the more-retro ones Rivendell's bringing in have an
appeal, too.

[RBW] New Dia Compe 610 Centerpull Brakes?

2018-06-13 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
I thought they mentioned a while back that they might show up in June. I am
also waiting for them. If you are still looking for an older set, I have a set
of Weinmann 610's that I'd be happy to send to you cheap. Message me if you're
interested.

[RBW] New Dia Compe 610 Centerpull Brakes?

2018-06-13 Thread ted
I’ve seen them on a demo Roadini at RBW. I’m not familiar with the new 750s so
can’t really compare to those but the new 610 looked fine to me. Nobody there
had an eta for them. My sense was soonish but that they just weren’t sure when
to expect them.

[RBW] New Dia Compe 610 Centerpull Brakes?

2018-06-13 Thread David B
I know Riv has referred to new DC 610 centerpull brakes as forthcoming and a
good brake for the Roadini.
Has anyone seen these new brakes in person?
If so, are they basically the finish of the newer 750s?
I’m thinking of picking up a set, wondering if folks have an inside scoop as to
when they’ll be available.
Also, if anyone has an older set for a reasonable price (that is, very cheap)
that I could use as placeholders until the new version is available, I’d
certainly appreciate it.
Thanks,
