[RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres 700 x 30 substitutes?

2020-08-14 Thread Nick Payne
Re the Challenge Strada Bianca 700 x 30, I didn't have problems mounting
them, but I had to retire them because the braking force was making the
tyres gradually creep around the rim until the valve got ripped out of the
tube. The rims are Mavic MA2 - been using them for years with multiple
other brands of tyre with no such problem, and the GP5000 700x32 I fitted
after removing the Strada Bianca tyres didn't have the problem when
inflated to the same pressure. Here's what the wheel would look like after
a ride of 40-50km, and the valve was straight at the start of the ride:

[RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres 700 x 30 substitutes?

2020-08-14 Thread Paul Brodek
Hey Aaron,

This could turn into another of my tire rants, but it's getting late and
I'm getting sleepy.

All's I'm gonna say right now is, I can no longer simply use the term
"accurate" in regard to labeled tire widths. Actual tire width is dependent
on the tire itself, natch, but also the width of the rim and the final tire
pressure. Since I started dabbling in vintage builds again, my rims now
range from 13mm internal width (Mavic Open 4 CD) to 21mm (HED Belgium+).
That 8mm width differential results in significant differences in actual
tire widths.

Luckily I don't have any wide-ass gravel/all-road/atb rims, which can make
21mm look skinny. Then I'd be making myself even nutsier.

So now I have to use a whole bunch of qualifiers: "accurate on narrower
rims" or "accurate on wider rims." I think of "accurate on narrower rims"
as "oversized," and "accurate on wider rims" as "undersized," but that
still only has meaning when you're including rim widths in the discussion.
I suppose that's relatively understandable, but if the tire mfrs would just
standardize their width labeling, life would be so much easier.

The tire labeling doesn't tell us what rim width they're using to measure
the width, or a what tire pressure they're measuring. There's also the
issue that tires sometimes pop out of new molds either a little
undersized/oversized from what the designers intended, which only compounds
(is that pun-ish? punish??) the problem. 622-33-19-80 (622 tire is 33mm on
19mm-width rim at 80psi) could be what's in the mold, but what happens when
the tire pops out and ps! it's actually 31mm or 35mm at 19/80?

End of rant.

In general I find the wider Soma SVs to be accurate on wider rims, or a
little undersized, so the 33s will reach 33mm on 19-21mm-ish internal-width
rims and normal/high-ish riding pressures. I just checked one on a 19mm
Belguim+ rim, 21mm internal width, and it was just a hair over 33mm (like
33.1-33.2mm) at 80psi. If you're using narrower rims, and/or running lower
pressure, they should be a little bit narrower.

There could be sample variation, and also variation within the line. I'd
never used Supple Vitesse 28s, but just got a pair hoping they'd be
undersized enough to work on my Merckx, which has the 19mm Mavic Open 4 CD
rims. I figured if they were like the 33s, and wouldn't hit 28mm till they
got on wide rims, they shouldn't get above 26.5mm or so on a 13mm rim. They
wound up pretty much at 27.0-27.4mm on those 13mm rims, which was a good
0.5-1.0mm too wide/tall for the Merckx. If they're only 1mm "undersized" on
13mm rims, they're going to be oversized on 19-21mm rims. I haven't tried
them on a wider rim yet to see how wide they get, might get around to it
before the weekend is out.

Can't help you much with comparative flat results. Hopefully the tire gods
won't be listening when I say I don't puncture often. And I mostly ride the
SLs, so I don't have a basis to make a great comparison.

[RBW] Soma leftside chainstay clamp-on kickstand: Reviews?

2020-08-14 Thread Patrick Moore
https://www.rivbike.com/products/kickstand-single-leg-clamp-on-soma-silver?_pos=5&_sid=aced3f41b&_ss=r&_ke=eyJrbF9lbWFpbCI6ICJiZXJ0aW43NTNAZ21haWwuY29tIiwgImtsX2NvbXBhbnlfaWQiOiAiTFZiNmFDIn0%3D

If anyone has used this, I'd be interested to hear how well it stays in
place without clamping it to the point of creasing the metal. I considered
this or one like it for my erstwhile Dahon Hon Solo, since I like
rear-of-stay stands because they let you walk a fixed-gear bike without
raising the stand -- scenario: you walk quietly through the grocery store
aisles with your stand down and your cranks revolving, and simply set the
bike down whenever you need two hands to grab your merchandise. It makes a
big difference compared to a bb-area stand or to no stand.

I've used the old-fashion Greenfield version on another grocery fixie, but
that one has a clamp that fits over both rearward chainstay and lower
seatstay, providing lever resistance to untoward rotation.

So, again, can you clamp this in place, using some sort of stay protector
if need be, securely enough that it doesn't rotate around the stay?

[RBW] Re: Tubing between Clem H, Atlantis

2020-08-14 Thread Drw
I don’t have any current specifics, but I do know the the latest iteration of
musa atlanti/hunqs had straight gauge tubing, and the only differences were at
the fork/stays (this info came direct from riv). It would be my assumption that
both mit atlanti and Clem’s (Being a budget hunqapillar) are also both straight
gauge in the same way.

As musa Atlantis owner and toyo Atlantis Former owner/current keeper, the toyo
is definitely lighter. The musa feels more like my wife’s Clem, which is tiny,
so I can’t really do a ride comparison.

All this to say, I think the sam, especially now with canti mounts, is really
the most do everything bike. Every time they announce a new round I consider
selling 2 “nicer” bikes and having the sam do it all.

Thanks for the pics and info Conway.
My idea to apply this to a 700c Atlantis is dumb because the difference
between 700c and 26" is too great. To have equal total wheel size (wheel +
tire), I'd have to run a skinny tire in the back and a 2.2"+ up front.
Nope.
Thanks though. Cool stuff.
If I knew a Hunqapillar fork was the biggest piece of a Hunqapillar I'd
ever get to own, I might purchase it for that reason alone :-p

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell has the almost perfect crankset for me

2020-08-14 Thread J L
Just for a point of clarity, Rivendell sells a triple crank with a chain guard
and two rings (middle and granny) in a couple of configurations. They do not
sell a sub-compact double. Some of the other cranks mentioned here are doubles
that allow small ring (outer and inner) combinations.

[RBW] Tubing between Clem H, Atlantis

2020-08-14 Thread Jason Fuller
Anyone have experience between the Clem H and the MIT Atlantis frames in
terms of the feel and weight of the tubing, and the differences in how they
ride? I am shorter, at 5'8", and ride a 45cm Clem H that fits pretty well,
if a touch small. I have been daydreaming about the 50cm Atlantis frames
with 26" wheels that are in the 'Garage Sale' section of the website (3
left!) because everything from my Clem would bolt right up.

However, I also recognize that it's a lot of money to buy a bike that's
basically a fancier version of what I have - the ETT measurement is the
same, the rear end is a bit longer and the top tube is a bit higher (better
aesthetic fit for me, but the touch points would hardly move at all, so
really the same fit). Plus I would probably worry about it more. As such, I
always ponder it for a short bit then put it out of my mind.

I am curious though if the assumption that it would ride similar to the
Clem (or at least, not different enough to be able to justify the expense)
is fully sound. I think it is, but maybe I'm wrong. I use this bike for
commuting, errands, shorter rides with friends, but also occasionally for
loading up with more stuff than my Hillborne can reasonably carry (ie multi
day camping trips). I find the Clem to be quite heavy-duty and very stiff,
moreso than I'd prefer, but it can do whatever I need it to.

Thanks!
Jason in Vancouver BC

Re: [RBW] Re: FS:. 58 cm Hunqapillar Fork for 26" Wheels

2020-08-14 Thread Conway Bennett
The 1993 XO-2 has very tight clearance by current standards which is what
instigated the initial fork project. The XO-2 I had was basically NOS and
I also ended up with a 1994 XO-3 that had seen some use. I treated the
XO-2 too preciously and I wanted a daily driver which is why I kept the
XO-3. Around the same time I bought a 650b Hunqapillar so I never used the
fork again.

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2020-08-14 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I want it all!, at least anything that might fit. I think the Wolbis would be a
bit small, and I do have more than my fair share of bikes, but no, more please.
And having had the pleasure of meeting Tall Paul last fall, I know he's 1-
super nice, and 2- his bikes nearly fit me!! So I had to holler.
I admit, I was a little sad seeing that much seat post on this bike, knowing
that mine would be a little bit more, and thus, I might never know the joy of a
swoop tubed hillibike . But maybe, if one shows up down the line and I "need"
a drop bar racer, I might Snag it up .
So, to answer your question- nope, definitely don't need any smaller bikes, and
I picked up that second Rosco in hopes of never needing any more bikes ever.
I should set up my big Clem again, find joy in the swoopless...

Happy Rolling

Re: [RBW] Re: FS:. 58 cm Hunqapillar Fork for 26" Wheels

2020-08-14 Thread Conway Bennett
Matt,

I added two pictures of the bike I had it mounted on for reference. I am
not sure how the fit will be on a Toyo Atlantis but I was running 26 x 2.15
smart Sam's on cliffhanger rims with a lot of clearance. This is also a
good project for someone who wants to modify it further to accept disc
brakes.

2020-08-14 Thread Linda G
I'm in a similar situation, needing a double crank in 165 with low
gearing ( 42-26). I have a White Industries VBC road square taper on one
bike and Sugino OX 601D on the other. The White Industries would work for
you but they are expensive. I bought the Sugino from Soma but they don't
seem to carry them any more. When I got it, you bought the crank arms and
chainrings separately so you could customize. The White Industries also
works that way. The Sugino was not cheap either. The White Industries looks
and rides very nice and seems to be better quality than the Sugino. I dread
setting up another bike because of the difficulties of finding a crank that
will work for me. Good luck!

2020-08-14 Thread Matthew P
Hey Nikko.

Nice ride! I'm gathering parts to build up my 58 cm Toyo Atlantis.
Looks like your tire clearance is limited in the back and not in the fork.
Can you confirm?
And those are 700c x 2.1" tires on there? Looking about max. I thought
2.2" would be the max, like the 2.2" Ikons.
You ever fit wider tires than the ones you have on there?

Lets see those parts! I'm interested. You want to let that front rack
go? Crust leather bars? Wha? Love to see that stem too! Purple goes
great with the Atlantii!

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on albastach bars

I currently have albastache with 10cm dirtdrop stem on my soma san marcos
and really like it. It took me awhile to get used to the weird aesthetic
of dirtdrop stem but having the albastache bars up that high really does
maximize comfort and the variety of hand positions. The rear grip area
(near my bar end shifters) is very similar to using albaTROSS bars, and the
forward area offers 2 different positions: in the loops which is similar
to a straight bar, and on the hoods which is also pretty comfy. Adding
stoker levers or Dia Compe knob grips near the stem can supposedly offer a
4th hand position but I haven't tried that

[RBW] New 2020 Sweater Vests

2020-08-14 Thread Mark Roland
Mine came. Love it. Will be wearing it over the black merino long sleeve
and my various Pendletons this fall. It should be a super versatile
well-used garment. It did take a bit of dedication to try it on in
94-degree heat. I thought it might be so long as to be slightly unsightly.
But no, it's within bounds. 5'10", got a medium.

Had them on my commuter for a couple years and loved them. Had them on a
shorter stem & about even with the seat height. Much more like a drop bar
than albatross. I’ve switched them out for noodles which I now like better.

Re: [RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2020-08-14 Thread Mark Roland
Yeah. Most bikes are stolen as crimes of opportunity--unlocked, unattended.
Then you have the semi-pros--they have cutters and can get at cheaper locks
quickly. It's doubtful whether they will discriminate much as long as the
bike looks like it can bring $10+. I understand there is a small subset of
thieves that know the signs of a high end bike, and have buyers that will
pay them enough for their troubles without asking questions. If these folks
zero in on your bike for whatever reason, without lots of countermeasures,
it will be hard to deny them. The good news is, this last type probably
operates in a zone rich with potential targets. Does the park entrance seem
like a likely drive by spot for pro bike heists? Is there a ranger station
or parking lot guard booth nearby? Etc. Etc.

As far as the Charlie Gallop looking like a 90s Multitrack. H. I think
all the swoop bikes are snazzy--Clem L, Susie/Gus, upcoming CG. I think the
Platypus is gettng a swoop in the extra stays?

Hey Joe,

Thanks for looking out. Unfortunately, that would be far too small for me.
As for sizing, I'm not 100% sure as I've never had the opportunity to test
drive a Riv, but I have a PBH of about 86 cm, so according to their charts
56-58 would be for me, but it's hard to know for sure

Yes that's the height I keep the seat at.

[RBW] Re: WTT My Nitto 32F, Surly Front or CETMA for your Mark's or M18

2020-08-14 Thread EGNolan
My 32F is also a campee
,

so I'm unsure of the model you have Sam. If it has a diving board for crown
attachment (like this)
rather

than the through hole attachment meant for cantilevers/V-brakes/disc then
it would probably work. I'm not looking for h'bars, but rather thought I'd
offer mine in case someone wanted to trade for a rack...
