Re: [RBW] Roadeo finally ordered!

2013-01-20 Thread nawrock
You will love it. I have owned mine for i think has been 3 years + now. It is
made in the USA, has wonderful lugs and I marvel at its beauty and ride
quality.
When I first ordered it and was going through the build with Mark I wanted to
put the Rolly Polly tires on it. Mark said that the frame was designed for the
33. JB's. I was a little hesitant as I used the RP's on my previous
Atlantis and Rambouillet and loved them.
When the bike showed up and took it out for its first few rides I fell in love
with the JB's and have them on the SimpleOne also.

Well, I did it!

I ordered a Roadeo frameset. 53cm Ram Orange with cream accents, threaded fork
(going to use my Nitto lugged stem). When the custom raffle was going on, I
bought a gift certificate just so I could get entered into the raffle. I didn't
win, of course, so I am using the gift certificate on the Roadeo frame. This
bike is going to be my club riding bike and faster solo ride bike and the set
up is going to be more aggressive than my Sam Hillborne. I have some time to
think about wheels/components and general setup which I am actually thankful
for as I could use the time to get some money together. Brifters or
barends?hmmm. Can't wait for it though, it is going to be cool and a good
compliment to my Sam!

[RBW] Re: Fit Issues with my Rivendell

2013-01-20 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
It LOOKS pretty good. It can't hurt to try lowering the bars, which is an easy,
cheap fix if it works.

Also, it never hurts (well, maybe a little) to strengthen the core muscles with
sit-ups, planks, cobras, etc. Riding a bike doesn't really do much for these
important muscle groups, and it sounds like these are the muscles that are
getting sore.

[RBW] Riv Visit

2013-01-20 Thread Chris
Drive up from Los Angeles and made my first trip up to the RivHQ this weekend.
Great guys. They let me ride just about everything in the shop and complimented
my 1984 Univega. Sorry Im horrible with names and can't remember everyone but
Joe was awesome. They even gave me a hat and a few Riv readers. I knew I would
dig the Hilsen but the speed and solidness of the Atlantis and the Hunga were
surprising. Great bikes. Now I just have to sell all my other rides to buy one
LOL.

[RBW] Re: Fit Issues with my Rivendell

2013-01-20 Thread Jeremy Till
It should be pointed out in all of this that the angle of the back isn't
the only variable that will be affected by moving the seat forward. Seat
position also determines how well your are balanced on the bicycle between
your butt and your hands, and the reason that GP suggests starting with the
saddle all the way back on the rails is because it gives you the greatest
chance of starting out in a position where your butt is taking most of the
weight and your hands/arms are largely unloaded. Now, if that position is
well behind your balance point, i.e. the point at which you will start
tipping forward and needing your arms to support your torso, then you can
move the saddle forward slightly and not change overall balance. But if
you are just at that balance point now, curing lower back pain through
moving the saddle forward is a bad idea IMHO since it means you will just
be shifting the stress to another part of your body--namely your hands and
arms. Better to reduce back angle by reducing the reach.

I'd agree with Jim T's suggestions on this one. Try lowering the bars
first since it's the cheapest and easiest change to make, and sometimes
our body is asking for more reach, not less. . Do it slowly and
incrementally, measuring your position before and after so you can revert
to the original if the new one doesn't work out.

But if lowering the bars makes it worse, I'd also agree that shorter reach
bars might be a good idea. Noodles are great bars but they're big in terms
of reach and drop. Try something more compact like the Soma Hwy One.

I have shoved the Brooks saddle all the way back Riv-style, which my

 on my hands.

Now I just have to work out the low back issue and I will be good to go

I am gonna try the RivReader fist full-'a-seatpost method with bars
1.5-2cm above saddle and see if that feels better. I'm gonna keep the

My favorite Riv sighting is a repeated miracle:

My road route to work is 35 miles from El Cerrito to South Hayward. If
things are going good, I do it once a week in the morning. Every single
time I do it, there's a very tall, very blue Rambouillet coming the other
way. I hope I'm not being unkind saying that I'd place the rider in his
mid 60s. I always give him a hello ding on my bell. At this point he
seems like he's part of the route.

[RBW] Re: Fit Issues with my Rivendell

2013-01-20 Thread charlie
Rather than shorter reach bars a shorter stem will so the same
thingjust do some measurement comparisons. You can also just hold on
the curve of the bar and if that feels better maybe a 1-2 cmm shorter stem
for a similar position on the hoods. One thing you don't want to do is
limit your options. I did this by using a 20mm shorter stem and realized
that I actually needed a longer one with my bars being so high on my bike.
My solution, I went back to a 90mm stem and lowered the bars. In the photo
your back appears more than 50 degrees when on the hoods, if this is comfy
for you don't change but I'll almost bet a lower bar height, maybe and inch
lower, will make a big difference for your back.

[RBW] FS 55cm Rivendell AHH $1500 + shipping (almost complete bike)

2013-01-20 Thread Dan Abelson
Still trying to sell my AHH. I've decided to try selling as a mostly
complete bike (complete bike minus crank, pedals, saddle, seatpost and
chain). I thought this might make it more affordable for those without
a treasure trove of parts laying around and I think it is a pretty good
spec.

Frame is 55cm AHH takes 700c wheels

Headset: Shimano Ultegra

Handlebars: 44cm Nitto Soba

Stem: 9cm Nitto Technomic Deluxe

Brake Levers: Shimano Tiagra

Shifters: Dura Ace Downtube (9 speed indexed with friction option)

Brakes: Tektro R556

Front Wheel: Mavic Open Pro with Ultegra hub (32h)

Rear Wheel: Mavic Open Sport with Deore XT hub (36h)

Tires: Your choice of 700 x 35 Schwalbe Marathon Racer, 700 x 38 Schwalbe
Marathon Cross, 700 X 37 Panaracer Pasela (non tourguard), 700 x 28 Avocet
Cross II, or 700 x 35 Resist Nomad. I have a ridiculous number of tires.

Front Derailleur: IRD Alipna

Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore LX Long Cage - Rapid Rise (shifts
backwards)

Shimano square taper bottom bracket (unsure of length)

Here is the geometry

TT length is 55.5cm.
SO height 80cm
ST is 55cm (c-t)
Head Angle 72
Seat Angle 72
Fork Rake 52
CS Length 45
BB Drop 8.0

Frame and fork are in good shape no dents etc. Paint is good except on the
drive side chainstay where there was a nasty case of chain slap and the
normal paint loss around dropouts etc. I kept the paint loss from the
chain slap covered up with a leather chainstay protector (the brown in the
photos next to the lost paint is goop from the chainstay protector). Parts
are all in good shape.

Photos here: --
http://www.flickr.com/photos/abelvitz/sets/72157627919352912/

$1,500 + shipping (I will pay for packing).

Thanks. I would like to sell this so I can get a new bike build started.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo vs. Hilsen performance differences?

2013-01-20 Thread Jeremy Till
I think mainly the tubing...Roadeo uses super lightweight and thinwall
stuff, really not designed for carrying much more than the rider (and a fit
one at that--there was some mention of a 200lb weight limit when it first
came out) and a small day-ride load. Probably not the thing for bumpy off
road riding either.

Roadeo also has smaller clearances, using 57mm reach calipers as opposed to
the big 55-75mm calipers used on the Hilsen.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose brake lever question

2013-01-20 Thread BSWP
I'm part way through the cockpit changeover, with the 200mm Bullmoose bars
and brake levers in place, but no cables yet. I rode around the
neighborhood today, nudging the bars up down, brakes in out (fixed
gear, so easy to slow down). A few observations: The bars are really wide,
wider than I need, too wide even for carrying the bike through doorways in
the house. I will remove an even inch from the sides. The brakes are pretty
good mounted with about an inch gap between clamp and bar struts - just
enough room to comfortably rest the sides of my thumbs along the outsides
of the struts while still able to brake with my outer fingers. And I can
move my hands all along the bars, yet still have good variety of placement
to brake with trigger and middle fingers. A couple layers of bar tape will
be perfect. And the bars are very comfortable at even just an inch and a
half raised in the steerer tube, which puts them about same amount higher
than the nose of the saddle. The bars make an easy path across my palms, I
think they're going to be great.

Pictures when it's all wired up.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo vs. Hilsen performance differences?

2013-01-20 Thread William
I'm not sure I understand the question in the Original Post. Michael wrote:

Lighter tubing?

A. Do you mean that you already know for a fact that the Roadeo is a
racier performing than a Hilsen, and you want to know what makes it the
racier performing bike?
Or
B. Do you mean that you know there are differences in geometry and tubing
and are asking WHETHER the Roadeo performs better, and if so how?

Those are two very different questions. Which one did you mean?

I'm talking performance, not looks or lack of eyelets, etc. Thanks for any
 info.

[RBW] Re: Optimal tire pressure questions...

2013-01-20 Thread charlie
Rene I am 257 and have have wondered also about the charts but I've had
good success running 38mm Schwalbe Supreme tires at 65 psi on the road and
41mm Marathons at around 55 psi. Much less and they are sluggish on
pavement. I don't drop pressure for gravel or dirt but have probably ridden
with ten pounds less when I don't check my tires before riding and that is
when they feel sluggish. I usually look at the sidewall recommendation and
buy a tire that has enough width for my weight without exceeding 90 psi.
So 32mm is about the narrowest I can go. I've seen and used the charts and
generally agree with them and I'll bet the flyweights among us can and do
run super low pressures. Back in my youth (165 lbs) I remember running 23mm
tires at 80 psi. I don't think I can put enough air in a 23mm tire now
without it feeling like a rock and risking a blow out.

On Saturday, January 19, 2013 1:23:18 PM UTC-8, René wrote:

Since I'm a heavy guy, the spreadsheet that has been posted for all to
determine the optimal tire pressure has been very usefull for me,
particularly as all my bikes have different tire widths/sizes. However,
last week I ran into a couple of issues with this chart that I'd like to
see how everyone else has addressed:

 1) Does tire size (650b, 700c, etc.) affect the optimal pressure for a
 give tire width?
 2) If you are a very light person, for wider tires you get some ridiculous
low number, like 7lbs. How do you determine the lowest pressure to use in
 these cases?
 3) Can I extrapolate these values to tubeless MTB tires as well?

 Any extra feedback is welcome!

I have also heard that they are the same, at least in the larger sizes. In any

[RBW] Re: Roadeo vs. Hilsen performance differences?

2013-01-20 Thread Don Compton
I am a proud Roadeo owner. I had owned a Ram. And, I have test driven a
Hilsen at Rivendell Bicycle Works. Mine is a 59cm. While my Roadeo is not a
light bike, its fits right in my club rides. The handling is superb and
very stable on fast downhills. It feels very similar to my Ram but is
slightly more responsive and can handle wider tires. The Hilsen felt very
familiar, but just a little less responsive. To me, the Hilsen is better
suited to rides requiring fenders and some light carrying capacity (country
bike?).

[RBW] Re: New Blug Post with Jay Ritchey video

2013-01-20 Thread Mike On A Bike
I will say that I appreciated Grant's mention of earbuds as a possible
culprit, as well as highlighting the important fact that you hear
trouble before you see it. As someone who's ridden over 10k city miles
in the past 2 years and most of them with earbuds until recently, I
was not long ago converted to never listening to music while riding.
The slew of mechanical problems that you can snuff out early before
too much danger as well as the spidey sense,or priopreception with
other road users, is a super huge deal, I've come to realize.

As someone who's been repeatedly guilty of reckless or potentially
self-endangering riding while in the zone/in oblivion, the narrative
described sounds very much like it involved that distraction. It's of
course impossible for anyone but the rider in question to know what
all happened, but I think it highlights that good riding requires
restraint and full attention.

And then I stop and ask myself... why are we talking about one bad
apple amidst the droves of us whose lives have really been
substantially changed for the better because of the skill, care and
attention that define Rivendell? I have always been taken aback by the
degree to which everyone there that I've dealt with has gone out of
their way to make sure I'm happy. Grants response reminds of the

Allow me to make a humble retraction.  I can only validly lay 100% of the
fault at the feet of the rider, not one scintilla more.  200% was unfair of
 me.  Mea culpa.

Me, I worked in sales, too -- insurance -- and dealt with idiot and
knavish clients, so nothing would surprise me; and indeed, JRA would be
very odd here. But the evidence as given does not allow of more than a
suspicion, even if a good and well informed one.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo vs. Hilsen performance differences?

2013-01-20 Thread Michael
William,
The description on the site led me to believe it is the fastest bike they make,
intended for fast club riding and not for touring/commuting/utility/country/
doingsomething riding like their other bikes are described. It even comes with
the option for an aheadset type headset.
It says it is their answer to speedy modern CF bikes.
So, to me, this sounds like it is the fastest/only race-like model in current
production.

However, it doesn't say what makes it that way.
There is no discussion of geometry or power transfer, etc.
So I was wondering what about this steel bike that is so similar to the Hilsen
(minus brazeons) makes it intended for fast riding only.

[RBW] Re: riv sighting.

2013-01-20 Thread Evan
I, too, spotted a Riv the other day. I was walking along Market Street in
downtown SF and spotted a woman, about 65 years old, riding a burnt orange
Rambouillet, complete with flower-printed panniers. She stopped at a light
up ahead of me, so I ran to catch up, stepped into the crosswalk near her,
and told her I loved her bike. She said, Me, too! It's one of my favorite
things. Then the light changed and she rode off into the west. I was
almost as inspired by her as I was by Jay's Rivideo. Terrific video!

Anyway, we ALL miss John so much, and he'd have been great in the video.
His office would have stolen the show.
Thank you all for liking it, and to whatever extent Rivendell Bicycle *
works*, now you know why. Originally Jay and I talked about a
ten-to-twelve minute videos, and that was the plan. And that was the
budget, too. A few months later, after all the shooting (I think everything
was one-take), Jay sent me a 29-minute vid (only the ultra-beginning, with
me ridng down the trail, and then the typeover was added). Jay is a
remarkable guy. He dives into things and seems to not know about learning
curves the way the rest of us do. Jay was a great employee and friend. You
can't know him without wanting to be more like him and feeling lucky. Super
guy and he did a great job.

It really doesn't matter. As a customer, one of the things that earns

 will
continue to do it in the future if necessary. That is why I have 4
Rivendell bicycles and keep buying from them things I could buy
  elsewhere.

In turn, I try to avoid being unreasonable and taking advantage of
 them.
I've been in the opposite side of the spectrum, where stuff I wanted
 was
being sold by a vendor who I felt treated me poorly, and I've learned
 the
hard way that it wasn't worth buying from them, especially when there
 are
many other equivalent options out there.

While as a customer, I do not expect that Rivendell will replace my
 frames
whenever anything unfortunate happens to them, when I needed them to,
 for
sizing issues, they volunteered to do it. For an individual, it might
 mean
everything; for a shop, it will likely b the seed of more future
 business
and referrals. While there are indeed people who will abuse this, on
 the
long run the benefit for all will be much larger. For me, it sealed the
  deal.

I don't support the LBS that is closest to me; I support the ones that
 give
me the best service and go out of their way for me; they make me feel
special and welcome. When they stop doing that due to management
 changes,
policy changes or because the sales person or mechanic that did it goes
elsewhere, I follow them to their new place of work unless they go out
 of
town, even if I have to drive further.

And going back to the video, while everyone I've ever interacted with
 at
Rivendell has always been wonderful, I do agree that Keven is special.
 Very
special. I wasn't surprised when Grant stated it in the video.
