[RBW] Re: Big Apples for GAP and CO tour

2013-02-18 Thread ascpgh
Shawn:

If you choose the 50 mm BAs just for this ride, the C O part might
provide enough poor drainage and mud to have you wishing for something less
floaty. Remember when you leave Hancock that there are 17 miles of asphalt
you can default to on the opposite side of the canal from the C O; the
Western Maryland Railway trail.

Re: [RBW] A bike to grow old with?

2013-02-18 Thread Bruce Herbitter
I was reminded of this yesterday, when the route included multiple rough RR
track crossings and old worn chip seal. The 650B conversion to a RBW Road
allows 38 mm Pari-Motos. At 55 - 60 lbs of air pressure, they float over
that junk.

[RBW] Re: Big Apples for GAP and CO tour

2013-02-18 Thread shawn
All thanks for the input. I am glad to hear that many of you have ridden
this ride with BA and were happy with their performance. I have only ridden
a short distance on the BAs and they feel great, especially going down my
long rough gravel drive way. I was concerned that the tires might be too
heavy and slow, but again it is a tour and not a race. After reading a few
of the comments about mud on the CO, I am starting to wonder if I might be
better with the Big or Little Ben tire. I worked really hard to get my 60mm
Berthoud installed with the 50mm BAs and was concerned that if I did drop
down in tire size the fenders would not look right with smaller tires. Here
is a pic of my Atlantis.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenwayrider/8483800970/in/photostream

I know this is subjective, but what is the smallest tire you can run with
60mm Berthound fenders and maintain a good fender line?

Thanks

Here's a pic of my 68 Atlantis on the GAP last spring on the Riv Rally.

the other trip I mentioned more than once to clear mud from between the
fender and tire while running 50s and 60mm PB Cascadia fenders.

They may be slow, but only if you're doing this ride in 4 days. In that
case, speed might matter.

We've done this ride a handful of times, in both directions, and over
different time frames. I highly recommend it. You'll have a great time.
The scenery and history of the area is wonderful.
If you're not from the Pittsburgh area, and would like an escort to get you
and your group through the city maze and detours, and onto the main trail,
we would be glad to lead the way. We would be available after the 17th.(We
are riding the Katy Trail at the beginning of the month)

Have a Great Time!!,

Not a direct answer, and also subjective, but I got compliments on
my '03 Curt with 45 mm 559 dimpled Honjos installed over 22 mm
(actual) Specialized Turbos.

I have to agree that the hi-rise 60 mm PBs on the Fargo looked odd
with 34 mm actual Kojaks -- and per Jan there is more splashing when
the gap isn't just so, but I've not found it a huge problem, living as
I do where 9 is normal in a good year.

I agree that all else equal one wants the best fender line and gap,
but after all, aren't other variables far more important?

[RBW] Re: Big Apples for GAP and CO tour

2013-02-18 Thread Kelly
Well of the 8 of us we ran everything from 700x28's to Amit's and I with
Big Apples. All did the job. Here is Dawn on her Atlantis with 700x40's
.. no issues with mud and fenders. Now a few people with tighter fits
like the Holdsworth with JB's and fenders which were a tight fit did have
mud clogging issues.
Don't worry just have fun.. it's all good.

[RBW] Re: Same shots.

2013-02-18 Thread dougP
Manny:

What you are doing isn't nutty at all. Often the same shot can look
entirely different over time.

One of my touring buds did a Vermont fall tour so he could photo the
spectacular colors. Since it can happen over a few weeks, he booked the
tour for consecutive weeks to guarantee his chances of good photos. As
luck would have it, the first week was fabulous, with all the colors at
their max. The weather change quickly enough that by the time he repeated
the same loop a week later, all the leaves had fallen. He made a point of
duplicating the previous week's photos at the same spots. It made for a
set of remarkable photos, with some so different that he had to point out
some point of identity to link the two photos.

originally equipped the first NYC bike police patrol) and many others.

[RBW] Re: A bike to grow old with?

2013-02-18 Thread Fai Mao
I have a Sam H. in the 52 CM size with 650B wheels. It has the single top
tube. I am 5 foot 11 with an inseam of about 33 inches and Rivendell would
have probably sized me up to the next size (I bought the frame from
Renaissance Cycles). At that time none of the Sam's had the double tubes
but I was afraid of the really long top tube length. Anyway, with the
expanded geometry used in the Sam's I have found the bike to be quite
comfortable and I had no problem getting the saddle high enough using a
standard 330 mm Mountain Bike seat post though I probably show more seat
post than the Riv, people would think is appropriate

My observations on the Sam are that it is a great commuting bike, touring
bike (I rode from Hong Kong to Shanghai on it three years ago) and just an
excellent bike for general riding. I love it to death and can highly
recommend it. That said it will never be confused with a sporty bike and
even stripped down without racks, fenders and lights it is a fairly heavy
machine. I don't think it climbs well and I find I need lower gears to
negotiate hills than on other bikes. It also has a turning radius similar
to a 1978 Buick Electra Station Wagon I can't make a 180 turn at least on
the bike trails in Hong Kong without stopping, picking the bike up,
turning it around and then remounting. I have found that I still like to
have a lighter, less stretched out frame for faster, unloaded rides. If you
are that type rider I'd look at the Soma San Macos frame.

Lastly and this is true with any Rivendell design I think, plan on buying a
shorter crank. They have very low bottom brackets which makes them really
stable but being a centimeter (1/2 inch) or so closer to the ground means
that you can easily get pedal strike through corners if you aren't careful

At least that is my observation

Appaloosa isn't yet available, any recommendations for which other Riv
would be a bike to grow old with. (My kids already think I'm old, but
nevermind!) I like the price of the Sam, but can't get used to the double

Thoughts? Anyone have a Riv for sale that could work for me?

[RBW] Re: Big Apples for GAP and CO tour

2013-02-18 Thread ChrisB
Hi Shawn

I've been mulling over the same dilemma: Big Ben or Big Apples? In the UK
they're both available in the 26 x 2.0 which seems fine with a 60cm
mudguard if you're not ploughing through muddy trails. The review from Rivs
swing me towards Ben: its's the newer tyre and probably more versatile
given the more pronounced tread. Personally I prefer the aesthetics of a
less aggressive tread with mudguards though... Pricewise they're about the
same too.

heavy and slow, but again it is a tour and not a race.

I know this is subjective, but what is the smallest tire you can run with
60mm Berthound fenders and maintain a good fender line?

 Thanks

[RBW] Small tweaks

2013-02-18 Thread justinaugust
Today I decided I needed to try the one bike approach. I often drug out the
S1one from the basement for errands but I need more than one gear on the
weekends. For me that one bike would be my Saluki. However the fit has bugged
me for a while. So I looked at the fit in photos that I liked best on my two
previous bikes and jammed my seat (B17 imperial) forward in my VO seatpost and
lowered my bars. Instantly more comfortable and felt like I had better pedal
connection and power. Sometimes ignoring the groupthink around fit can be
helpful. This more aggressive position is helping me just ride more and lose
weight to look good at my pending nuptials next year. Go me!

-self congratulatorily in Philly, Justin

Ps: not selling the s1, unless its an even trade for a Yves Gomez, Betty Foy or
other Rivxte.

If the other trade doesn't work out, I also have a set of albatross bars

Best offer gets them lovingly packed for shipping and a brand new bar

 Hello all-

My girlfriend just came into a sweet mixte that I'm going to soup up for

 tires (630 bcd)

Before I go and buy some, I thought I'd throw it out here. Does anyone
have some decent, used, 27x at least 1 1/4, but preferable wider tires?

Let me know what you have offline. Special bonus for anyone in central
 Connecticut: will trade for beer...

I've run Paselas on my Ram before (700c instead of 27), and liked them:

I'm currently running Conti Tour Rides on my Bomba (650b instead of 27):

I like either tire, and think would suit for a commuter type

[RBW] 52cm Blue Sam owners, please help.

2013-02-18 Thread Michael
Trying to determine the actual reach of the bike, and the slanted 57.5
reported TT length isn't giving me an actual idea.
How far is it from stem shaft at top of headset, measured level in space to
the center of the seatpost shaft?
Thanks for the help.

[RBW] Re: 52cm Blue Sam owners, please help.

2013-02-18 Thread Jeremy Till
Don't own a 52cm Sam, but I'm fairly certain the 57.5cm TT length listed in
the geometry chart IS the effective horizontal TT. There's a note at the
top of the geometry charts that reads: In cases of 6-degree upslope, we've
included only the theoretical tt length.
