1. Where do you get those Avids for $20?
Which model? Their website shows a lot of cross trainer models.
2. Also, did you find you had to make an adjustment to your seatpost after
installing thin gripsters?

[RBW] Limiting sugar intake?

2014-07-02 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
WWGD? Reading Grant's blights convinced me to cut back on food during rides. I
think many cyclists (myself included,at times) use the ride as an excuse to
eat. I've been on group rides that, while only about an hour and a half, I
would see folks gobbling bars and goo. Even conventional racer wisdom says
you have enough stored glycogen to go fairly hard for two hours. That used to
be my standard. Any ride over 2 hrs and I would bring bars. After reading what
Grant had to say I stated stretching it out. Now 3 1/2 hrs is where I think
about eating. I try to do bars without fructose or processed sugar. Idea allay
and Kind bars and I keep organic, coconut rolled dates. And water. Although I
completed my first 400k brevet over the weekend and I had stomach issues. But
eating for brevets is a completely different creature than meandering. Also,
for the past several months, unless I'm doing long training rides, I only have
fresh, homemade (mostly veggie but a little fruit) juice during the day, then
my ride after work, then dinner. Even then a 2-3 hr ride is no problem.

they are great and comfy when descending a steep twisty, coarse mountain

Re: [RBW] New Trek 10lb. Road Bike with lifetime warranty.

2014-07-02 Thread ascpgh
Just wait. Even if this thing is intriguing and the positioning seems like
something you can do, your patience will likely be rewarded as the full
fare, early adopters who plunked down 15 large slowly realize that they are
not physiologically up to riding that thing and begin to test the secondary
market. This doesn't seem like a market that would just garage it and
forget it, too expensive. Unless the hubris of finding out this bike
defeated them and they do not want word of this to circulate.

The realized depreciation produced by resale of of these bikes by their
affluent buyers unable to achieve their Walter Mitty daydreams will be
interesting. Not so much fools and their money but rather dreamers and
theirs.

My old roommate was 160 lbs, 6'4 and a Cat. 3 racer and cracked three of
those early OCLV frames in the same place, vertically between the chain
stays on the back of the bottom bracket, making a horrible rough grating
creaking sound with each heavy pedal stroke. Trek replaced all under
warranty but required the frame in their hands before responding. He rode
less during that year's riding season with that fully warrantied bike
than he did before even trying competition. Tired of waiting for boxed
frames to ship back and forth, the LBS waiting time to reassemble (me
redoing much of that in our kitchen), he bought a Masi Gran Corsa frame
from me, collected his parts from the T shop and told them to tag and
sell his frame when it arrived. His glowing ride reports were hard to
discriminate from just having a ridable bike but were very warm and
positive in comparison.

That's the description for Trek's race fit. I'm actually surprised that
this frame is not offered in the more relax H2 fit - H2 features a
slightly higher head tube to put less strain on your back and neck. It's
the right way to get most riders, including many of our Pro Team riders, in
the right place. With no need for high-rise stems or spacer stacks, the
 look is nothing but pro.

Interestingly, the H2 fit actually gets the bar up nice and high! My
buddies who have recently bought Madones all have H2 fitting. I'm actually
surprised Trek doesn't offer this fit for this frame as the price point is
aimed at those who have money to burn and are more likely to go with the H2
 fit. Good Luck!

The Trek bike is not really a racing bike as it does not conform to the
weight restrictions for most racing organizations. The minimum limit is
14.99 pounds. It certainly is a race style bike though.

A few years back at NAHBS, I talked to a company that had a 10 lb race
style carbon fiber wonder bike and I asked how did it ride. Their answer
was like crap, very uncomfortable. At least they were honest. Maybe the
Trek rides better.

as Fignon put it, sometimes, when we train, we simply have to go out to

Re: [RBW] Re: Touring click in shoes without using the click in on platforms/rat traps feasable?

2014-07-02 Thread Jim Bronson
Avia Peter, size 13E, at Wal-Mart. I'm on my 3rd pair. I get about 1500
miles on each pair before the spikes wear the soles down to the point that
my fit is altered. Other people may be able to get more mileage out off
them that don't weigh 260 and climb out of the saddle frequently.

I will reiterate my prior guidance that these shoes are not comfortable for
walking around in, so caveat emptor.

I don't make a habit of shopping at Wal-Mart, but my wife likes to go there
so one day I wandered over into the shoe department. I first tried the
$13.99 Starter shoes but those were chewed up by the spikes in the thin
gripsters very quickly. So after that I tried these Avias because they
felt like they had a stiffer sole and they have worked out.

If these Avias are too lowbrow for some folks, I have an alternate
suggestion. I did once ride a 200k on borrowed New Balance cross trainers
a few years back. I had left my SPD shoes at home, which was 110 miles
away from the ride start. The only shoes I had for the trip were sandals
that I was not comfortable using on the bike. The New Balance shoes were
very comfortable both on and off the bike. Also used plastic department
store pedals for that 200k haha. I had an extra pair of them in my bag
just in case.

Oh the things you get into riding your Rivendell... :-D

[RBW] Riv Review

This might be a better link for all of the past reviews I scanned years

And the original post that got me thinking about this stuff:

Re: [RBW] Re: Limiting sugar intake?

2014-07-02 Thread Patrick Moore
I have to agree with this, with the addition that I believe that rich
foods -- fats, sugars, spices -- should be taken in moderation by most
people. It's interesting: Orthodox monks, who fast more days per year than
not (actually that is the goal for all Orthodox, but don't look at me) and,
when they fast, often do the strict fast -- basically boiled vegetables,
bread, and water -- often live healthily to very old ages. I've also read
that primitive pastoral and rural people -- no mod cons, dietary or
otherwise -- often, or even usually, live to healthy old ages: they are, as
someone put it, either healthy or dead.

I know of one couple my age (in fact, my sister and her husband) who each
look at least 10 years younger than their late 50s and are very healthy and
slim (I know the two aren't the same) and live largely on rice and beans
and vegetables -- out of custom and preference, not economic need, btw.

OTOH, the Inuit lived healthily on animal protein and fat.

Can you lube chains with animal fats?

[RBW] Re: Limiting sugar intake?

2014-07-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
Grant carries nuts, cheese, jerky. That kind of stuff.

On Tuesday, July 1, 2014 10:37:49 AM UTC-7, Jim Bronson wrote:

So my wife's work is doing this Sugar Challenge. She challenged me to
also participate. I said yes, but wanted to exempt myself during long
rides, i.e., anything longer than say 50 miles, as I like to partake of
chocolate milk as a refueling drink, along with anything else I might get
my grubby hands on along the way, like PBJ or a Gatorade.

Which brought me to a a connundrum. It's one thing to chug down whatever
convenience store food one can on a brevet, but the more normal
meandonneuring type riding is a different story, and something I struggle
with. How much sugar and or carbohydrates does one need for a un-racerish,
un-brevet-ish way of riding? Something that road-ish Rivendell owners
might do when going on a normal enjoyable afternoon ride that is good for
fitness but not exactly going hard? I mean, if I go out for a nice relaxed
pace 30 mile ride and I have eaten a PBJ before the ride, a couple of GUs
during the ride, and another PBJ when I get back, I've diminished the good
things that riding my bike did for me.

If I hit 15.5 mph average when I'm riding alone after work it's a good
day. If I'm going faster it's usually because I am on back of some sort of
 group or paceline.

I usually ride 24-35 miles after work 2-3 times a week with the available
sunlight I have now. Yesterday was a good example, I rode 24.3 miles
mostly on the new bike path near my house after arriving home from work
yesterday. With this Sugar Challenge on my mind, I did not eat after
getting home and by the end of the 24.3 miles I felt pretty beat and super
hungry. Yes, I avoided getting into the pure sugar based stuff I have
around the house like GU, which I like to pick up on clearance (16 pack
case for $5). But I felt infinitely worse for it.

 https://www.endomondo.com/workouts/365577813/4841064?country=uslang=enmeasure=imperialo=coursefb_action_ids=10203766337747921fb_action_types=fitness.bikesfb_ref=Defaultfb_source=other_multilineaction_object_map=[585561874897003]action_type_map=[%22fitness.bikes%22]action_ref_map=[%22Default%22]

So, what is the unracer-ish type advice for fueling enough to make you not
feel beat down when you're out meandering around, but yet still keeps you
sensibly slim and trim? (well, as much as a 6'7 260lb rider can say
 they're slim and trim anyway).

In other words, WWGD? (what would Grant do?) Something homemade or
 homespun?

report back to us. They're overpriced, but those are nice bikes, and if
they are legitimately for sale and the seller can be talked into a more
reasonable price, someone ought to give them a new home.

[RBW] Re: Advice: crank arms less than 165mm

2014-07-02 Thread WETH
Thanks everyone for the quick and thoughtful responses. I will definitely be
adjusting height of saddle and sliding it back a bit as a first course of
action. If that doesn't help, I wanted a plan B which might be the shorter
cranks. Stretching more is also good advice that I will pass along. I also
will try to get her to experiment with riding a bit more in the middle 36
chainring. She handle the pain well on our 5 day GAP ride of 30 mile days, but
I hope I can find a way to eliminate much of her pain. She really enjoys
riding. From experience, I know that minor adjustments can bring great comfort
or discomfort, so I will start there. It is a challenge to troubleshoot
someone else's discomfort.
Thanks again,
Erl

[RBW] New Bike Day(s): Homer arrives home

2014-07-02 Thread Bob Cook
My Homer arrived yesterday after a long wait (my travel schedule; RBW had
it ready to go a month ago) and its Fifteen Minutes of Fame on the BLUG
(see June 6). I chose to watch the *fútbol* instead of assembling; not the
best choice, as it turned out. Anyway, it's mostly together now, and a
short test ride proves the luggy smoothness of the Riv ride. Rack,
headlight, bottle cages, bar tape later today or tomorrow.

Pictures prove that I am able to follow Mark's bike assembly video:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/125863173@N06/sets/72157645067262827/

My guide through the planning and purchase was Jared, he of the stunning
black AHH, badass Hunq, and contagious enthusiasm. I spoke some with Rich,
Mark, and Miesha, too. Most on this list know well how friendly, helpful,
and patient the Riv people are, but it bears repeating. Time to start
saving for another bike.

Let us know how it rides. And congrats on a new Rivendell.

Wasn't the packing job a work of art itself?

Me, I'd have to think hard to choose between a Hunq and a Roadeo. Not that
I can afford either right now.

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day(s): Homer arrives home

2014-07-02 Thread Bob Cook
Patrick,

The box art is indeed wonderful. Not sure yet where I'll display it, but I
will.

Homer joins three Surlys: an LHT, racked and panniered; a Cross Check,
White Industries Double-Doubled; and a Pugsley for winter and trails. If I
could buy another Riv today, it would probably be a Hunq and I'd let the
LHT go. Why? Though the LHT carries loads very well and probably has
cockroach-like survivability, it rides like a dump truck. I'd rather ride
the Pugs in a headwind, and that's saying something.

Report on the first real ride to come.

Re: [RBW] New Trek 10lb. Road Bike with lifetime warranty.

2014-07-02 Thread Scott Henry
Very nice, yes its very expensive too.

I am more realistic and prefer the $5200 SLR6.
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/performance_race/emonda/emonda_slr_8/#
Its 4 pounds heavier but saves me $10,000 while still using the same
frameset and still delivering proven Ultegra components

The $4500 SL8 even brings you Dura Ace level components with the H2
geometry. With another pound of weight on a slightly lesser frame. It
even kicks it up to over the UCI minimum weight limit.
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/performance_race/emonda/emonda_sl_8/#

You may not like carbon, you may not like Trek. But at least those two
models are competitively priced with a lifetime warranty by a company that
will be there to stand behind it.
If I had an extra $5000, I wouldn't have an extra $5000 any more.

I hear ya on the shirts I have that same T-shirt (long sleeved) and it's
pretty holey...my cat loves to use me as a pincushion and it's been washed
to death...barely decent, but, it's not the shroud of Turin. Just can't
bear to part with it. I feel that the 1996 A/R and the 2001 Road custom
that I already have are probably in the sweet spot. Loved the QBs and the
Atlantises and I think the Hillborne and Foys are Riv quality at a
reasonable price point. And I think their component selection is excellent.
A custom Mixte would be my next choice:)

At any rate Rivendell has stood the test of time, I think, and mostly
stayed true to their values, which is admirable. And they've always been a
pleasure to deal with.

Good post!

OTOH, the Inuit lived healthily on animal protein and fat.

I chuckled at the comment about it resembling a manhole cover. The

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith Jr?

2014-07-02 Thread Dave
I'd imagine a Clem smith jr frame/build would be in line with the Clem smith
description available on the rbw site :
http://www.rivbike.com/category-s/815.htm

Cheap Bike Parts

The late Clem Smith parked his bike overnight in downtown Baltimore for years
and naturally had each and every part of his nice bikes ripped off. He always
recommended no-bs stuff for us to sell for his cheap bike. It's good stuff,
but not so precious you don't mind it getting robbed.
High Quality

You can outfit your bike with Clemcessories on the cheap but still say to
yourself as you cruise downtown... this is good stuff. And it's all true to our
quality guarantee. You'll know you're getting high quality, time tested,
not-stupid stuff. These aren't just Chinese knockoffs of good Nitto products,
they are items that were developed for different markets; commuting, cruising,
cheap mountain bikes, hybrids. They're cheap, not fake-expensive, get it? So
you don't have to feel like the sucker cruising down the street in a Pontiac
Fiero with the fake Ferrari body kit. Be proud of your cheap bike and don't
worry if it doesn't come out looking precious.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rear-mount safety device

2014-07-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Albuquerque is laid out between the Sandia Mountains (10K feet high) on the
east and the west mesa on the west -- a table land some 4-500 feet higher
than the Rio Grande valley floor at about 5000 feet. After the abrupt but
rather brief climb to the mesa, the land rises graduallly to the
continental divide some (IIRC) 50-70 miles west of ABQ city limits,
6500-7000 feet. I live 1/2 mile west of the Rio Grande, so that the
geography of my riding environment is a flat north-south landscape with
climbing east and west; eastward being largely gradual and continuous until
you get to the foot of the mountains; west being abrupt up the side of the
mesa, and then rolling and gradual west of that.

Once you get away from the valley floor, though, if you ride north or south
from a westerly or easterly position, the terrain is rolling and,
generally, sloping upward from south to north.

As long as I stay away from the mountains proper, the inclines are either
steep but short (my usual route to climb the west mesa is (to my legs)
brutally steep but only 1/4 mile long (after ~1 mile of gradual climbing,
continued by the gradual upward incline to the west). To the east, the land
slopes gradually upward from the river to the foothills; thus when I
commuted 15 miles east across town, a good 13 or or more of that was
continual climbing, mostly gradual but with some steeper section inclines
(eg, from Broadway up to the University, about 1 mile). The gradual slope
gets steeper closer to the base of the Sandias.

A favorite ride is from my mother's house up on the west mesa: go largely
north on more steeply upwardly rolling terrain for ~ 4 miles until this
particular road turns into dirt; turn around and seek interesting detours.

Long story short: as long as I stay away from the Sandias proper, few hills
are both very long and very steep. I don't know the grades, but the popular
5 mile Tramway climb from the valley to the base of the mountains is easily
doable in a 60 gear, and I've done it in a 75 with a howling tailwind. Of
course, I prefer to torque slowly, so others may have different opinions,
but the overall point is that there are no very long, very steep hills that
I have to deal with.

I stress that, while I love climbing, and even standing climbing, my rides
are short. A good hilly ride won't be more than 20 miles, unless I do a
Tramway climb, in which case the out and back will be ~30; most of my
riding is shorter still, like today's west mesa out and about which was
16.5 miles. It's not hard to climb ss/fixed for shorter distances.

Aside: I enjoy this sort of riding: just rambling around neighborhoods,

pedaling. I used to love this sort of riding when I was a boy in India,
where the neighborhoods were a lot more interesting than SW American
suburbia; but there are enough interesting detours around nearby Corrales
to allow even a 30 mile ramble on pavement.

There's a question of one's attitude, of course, but it's easy to strike a

customers are customers that feel like they've been heard and dealt with as
 individuals.
My parents recently joined Costco. On their first trip, they were
examining some product, clearly challenged by the choices, and another
customer walked past them saying that Brand X was the best after she'd
tried three others. It was the best, hands down. She said. Similar things
happened with repeat visits, and then they noticed themselves offering

by circling the samples, I think this culture of recommendation is their
 favorite part about the store.

Re: [RBW] New Trek 10lb. Road Bike with lifetime warranty.

2014-07-02 Thread RJM
I've seen people get screwed out of Trek's lifetime frame warranty. My
cycling buddy crashed in a paceline and was told he would have to purchase
a new frame, which I understand. Here is the thing though...his bike
completely was torn apart in that crash...it was in half, fork was
destroyed. It happens and not many warranties will cover something like
that...not really a bash against Trek.

BUT

I had an accident with my friend's Hilsenit came off from the bike rack
(Yakima rack...long story but the rack is at fault) while I was doing 80
miles per hour on the highway. This isn't a lie either, I saw the whole
thing in the rear view mirror as it happened. Thank heavens there was
nobody behind me when this happened. The wheels, fenders, seat, brifters,
and a pedal were destroyed, but the frame and fork, even handlebars,
stem, and seat post made it with some scratches. He rides that frame today.

I bought my Roadeo and paid under 4800 bucks for the whole shebang, with
Ultegra 6800 and Rolf wheels. I'm not all that impressed with what my Trek
store is selling for that kind of cash and I think I have a bike not only
equal to their bikes, but a couple of levels better.

If I was going to be forced to buy a Trek, I would be looking at the Domane
or that Boone. Nice bikesbut I seriously doubt they would live through
a fall off a bike rack like that Hilsen did.

You may not like carbon, you may not like Trek. But at least those two
models are competitively priced with a lifetime warranty by a company that
will be there to stand behind it.
If I had an extra $5000, I wouldn't have an extra $5000 any more.

Every time I walk by the Bombadil I think how easy a swap it would be one
frame for another. Must resist temptation as these simple switches
invariably lead me to buy 1k worth of parts from RBW...

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day(s): Homer arrives home

2014-07-02 Thread lungimsam

I just bought an 8-speed cassette from RBW and they sent me a Shimano
Hyperglide HG51-8-aw 11-32, and yours looks the same, so I was wondering if
 that is what they used.

If you buy an 8 speed general Cassette from their Cassettes offering
page, they give no description of what it will be, except Shimano or SRAM
and toothcount, whatever is available to ship at the time of your order.

If they put it on one of their Hilsens, they must really feel good about
them. Of course, I doubt they would sell anything they wouldn't put on one
of their bikes. They seem to stand behind the stuff they sell.

[RBW] FS Nitto Lugged Seatpost

2014-07-02 Thread Peter Morgano
A tad too much setback for me I think. I am gonna get an S83 instead. Not
as lovely and lugged but alas getting my strange body to fit a bike takes
work. Has usual insertion marks, nothing too bad. Selling for $120 shipped
OBO. Thanks all!

[RBW] Rivendell Silver Gruppo

2014-07-02 Thread lungimsam
Been reading about Campagnolo and his history in the new BQ mag.
Very interesting.
I think the idea of groupsets is really cool, especially if RBW had a
Silver groupset to sell one day.

I don't think that will ever happen because they seem to like a patchwork
of parts for their bikes, *which makes total sense*, so you can build it as
functionally as possible with no restrictions to the parts you want for
your needs.

But it would be cool to have everything on the bike matching Silver!

So far you can patch together a Silver 4-piece group: sidepull brakes,
BE/DT shifter levers, chainrings, and a Hupe.

Top it off with one of those Rivendell Rider Brooks saddles if you can find
one!
