Re: [RBW] Re: Quest for a winter biking/running/hiking shoe

2016-12-31 Thread Tim Butterfield
I tried Russell once, but ended up returning them. They claim to be true
moccisons, but I do not consider them true moccisons. The pair made for me
had a seam in the bottom of the sole between the heel and the toe. There
was some thin liner material over it, but I could see it and feel it
through that when barefoot.

Yeah the bronze one. I haven't ridden a Legolas but it seemed like it should be
similar, a 700c bike (for a short person) that is more road-ish but with all
the fixings for racks, etc. i road the demo which was pretty fast and spritely
from the parking lot ride I did.

What tires are you running? I've had a bit of a tire crisis on my Hunq. I put

[RBW] Hunqapillar build report

2016-12-31 Thread Bob B
Hi all,

I built up a 58cm Hunq myself this June, in a rush so that I could take it
on a 300-mile tour (DC > Pittsburgh via C/GAP), but finally, as of today,
got it how I REALLY wanted it. They breakthrough was switching out the
original Albas (an experiment) for my truly favorite bar, the Boscos (the
Bullmoose version for this build).

It's a fairly "traditional" build, I suppose. The only unique thing about
it may be the vintage Tektro levers. I love them, they're light as hell and
have such a sharp design. Why did I use a barend for the front and a
thumbie for the rear? Beats me.

It's depicted here in lite-mode. When I took this on the tour I had it
loaded up pretty good, using an inexpensive Blackburn MTN rack (in bright
red) on which I mounted two bright orange Seattle Sports panniers. I used a
vintage Frostline Kit saddle bag and stuffed my basket pretty full with my
tent. Used my RandiJoFab bartender bag for phone/wallet/map. I included a
couple of shots of that build at the end.

Hey there. I'm selling my Sackville SlickerSack. If you have the Nitto
Platrack and have been wondering what to do with it, you should buy this
bag. It is pretty amazing. Plus it has been discontinued by Riv and they
don't come up for sale often... so here is your chance to get one in
excellent condition.

You can read more about the bag and see pics here:
https://thirtydayson2wheels.wordpress.com/2010/07/05/a-little-bit-about-the-gear-and-my-sackville-slickersack-review/

Asking $165. Cash preferred. I'd rather a local purchase but will consider
shipping and other payments methods.

I was going to do the Andy Schmidt modification

and add turn clasps to the bottom of the bag to replace of the regular
snaps, which makes it easier to attach the bag to the rack. I have the
parts somewhere if you are interested and I'll throw them in. I talked with

they could totally do it on the cheap.

DM me if you are interested.

Happy New Year!

[RBW] Re: Extreme long johns...

2016-12-31 Thread Deacon Patrick
Update:
Brynje fishnet merino wool longjohns arrived yesterday and I got to test
them out on my bike/run today. They are at least as warm as Wiggys.

There is no getting away from the nylon feel of Wiggys. I feel like I'm
with Bret Bear self stranded on the Alaska coast and we've found fishnet
washed ashore and with only the shirts on our backs to keep us warm we make
a fishnet underlayer to save us.

Brynje merino wool are butter soft, with a finer netting. Never felt it on.
It cant be as hearty as nylon or synthetic -- time will tell how long they
last. But they are under garments, and need to have a shirt over them at
the least. Wearing in winter or bikepacking this are comfy and very warm.

I keep fine tuning the "ventilate" to dump heat BEFORE I sweat. The good
news is even when I do sweat and my cotton overshirt gets wet, I stay warm.
This really is a wonderful and flexible system. I love it!

[RBW] Re: Quest for a winter biking/running/hiking shoe

2016-12-31 Thread Deacon Patrick
Happy to try them for you, Garth. Grin. Is size your hesitation? If so, I'm
13 EEEish. Depending on your foot, you might find the Brogans fit if you
remove the footbed (add a thin leather insole due to the grooves in the
forefoot without an insole) and cut out the neoprene sock. But that's a lot
of "ifs" and cutting out the sock makes them non-returnable I presume.
Sardonic grin.

I know how frustrated I am with finding barefoot friendly footwear for a)
big feet, b) wide forefoot, regular heel, for rugged terrain and weather. I
can only imagine the challenge for you with size 14 flippers!

Lems have a size 48, which is what I'm hoping works. I was going to get
their boot as my rainy day/cold weather bikepacking shoe (sandals and wool
socks don't work for multi-day rain). When I talked with them they
suggested I go with the 9-5 leather shoe instead of the leather boot
because the forefoot is roomier (based on how it's sewn together.

I've tried almost everything out there. boiled wool socks (these, if you
don't want to make them yourself (making them yourself allows you to
control how dense you get them, but these dense up with more washings:
http://www.sweatersintl.com) with sandals are a great option for much of
the time. I wear Xero shoes Z-Trek
sandals: https://xeroshoes.com/shop/feeltrue-products/ztrek-men/ and love
them for running and biking when a full shoe isn't required.

SoftStar is fantastic. My wife and daughters love them. I don't do wel with
EVA foam underfoot, so that eliminates many of their options, and their
leather sole doesn't work well for me.

With abandon,
Patrick

That's about as good an endorsement as one could get for the touring

It's impressive what can be done if one just takes the time to experiment

[RBW] Re: Quest for a winter biking/running/hiking shoe

2016-12-31 Thread Garth
Interesting, thank you for trying them. I had wondered about those but my
hesitation was confirmed in your account.

Have you tried Lem boots by chance ? They don't make a size 14 but would be
curious to know about them.
Soft Star, have you tried their walking/running shoes ? I have some
RunAmoc coming on Tuesday .

For walking/hiking around here in mild conditions I have for the meantime
been wearing a 2mm Neosport Dive sock inside Merrel Bare Access and Vapor
Gloves. with a thin liner sock my feet stay perfectly warm walking through
deep snow for as long as I do , which is no more than a couple hours.

I may try some liquid rubber over socks for diy shoes . they'd last as
long as Vapor Gloves . ;)

Try Universal Cycles. I purchased the same arm from them. Ben's Cycles may be
another source.

[RBW] Re: Puzzling out a Nigel Smithe Saddlebag

2016-12-31 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, all! I've tried the many and various iterations suggested. Yes, in
the pictures there is tilt and a straighter bag might lift the buckles. It
doesn't. The buckles are lower than work, so the solution is to change the
closure system.

TrunkSacks are great, but there is a reason all that platform is available.
For putting things on. Grin.

I know there are some folks here who wear minimalist footwear. This is about my

[RBW] WTB: 700c wheelset 130mm and sugino double crank

2016-12-31 Thread dstein
That 10% coupon somehow tricked my computer into buying that 53cm rosco road
I've been eyeing. Bought some new parts and have others from the parts bin for
the build except a wheel set and crank. I'm thinking of holding off till I can
fit a new A23 wheel set in the budget but thought I'd check here to see what
folks had lying around and were willing to part with. Also looking for a double
crank and open to possibilities on gearing and brand here, but silver in color
is a must.

[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-31 Thread Dick Denning
Kieran:

I went on a 5 day fully loaded tour on my orange 58cm Rambouillet back in
September. It was the tenth annual fall tour I take every year with a few
riding buddies. Had a Jandd hooped low rider rack held onto the stock fork
blades with P-clamps. I used full sized rear panniers on each side of the
rack and had 15-17lbs in each pannier. Also had a VO rack that held and
supported my Sackville handlebar bag. Used an old Adam (Rivendell bag) in
combo with a Bagman off my saddle and carried my tent in the bag. Used
Gran Bois Cerf (28mm - but measure more like 30mm) tires with VO Fluted
fenders.

I was very happy with the way the way the bike rode and with the weight low
didn't get an annoying amount of wheel flop.
Not tons of clearance between the tires and the fenders, but enough to get
by. This was the first time I rode the Ramb for camping, much less with a
front load. I've camped with other front load setups and very much prefer
it to a rear load bias. I thought the Ramb rode great and will
absolutely use the same set up for future tours. I weight about 160lbs.

Like you, I've thought about having my Ramb modified with a different fork
(a bit more trail, room for more tire, mid stay eyelets..), having the rear
brake bridge raised, etc., but haven't gotten to it.

For comparison, I rode a 57cm Nordavinden on the prior year's tour with the
same set up (less tire b/c the Norda had even less clearance than the Ramb)
and didn't care for it as much as the Ramb. The ride was too noodly, there
wasn't enough tire width under me, and maybe it had too much(?) trail as
the Norda's have a lot of fork offset (70mm?).

Kai from Brooklyn is right. Side to side balance is what matters. I had a
total of 40-45lbs of stuff on this years tour and had all but maybe 10lbs
on the front end between the panniers and my h-bar bag.

Hope this helps.

Dick

[RBW] Re: Musa Mitts

2016-12-31 Thread Edwin W
I brought mine on a ride the other day with my 10 year old. It got a little
cold and I offered them to him. He cracked up looking at them! He accepted the
gloves I was wearing and I took the half mitts. Worked like a charm.

They are up there with splats, ponchos and the wind bib thing on high
practicality, low fashion scale. I have two ponchos, none of the others.

[RBW] Re: Musa Mitts

2016-12-31 Thread Matt B.
Really bummed these are going away and haven't been very popular. Seems be
inevitable for most clothing / parts / tools that are particularly good yet
cheap-- they are suddenly discontinued! I layer my half mitts over gripper
gloves in winter. That set up is good for down to 20 degrees or so
(especially on the ones with the fleece lining).

Anyway I bought an extra pair a month ago since the stitching on my old
ones began to unravel. I did plan to stitch them back up but wanted to have
backups nonetheless.
