I'm looking forward to it. Tbh I have no excuse to buy - I just got a custom
and it's perfect! - but I've always wanted a Bombadil with that nifty
double-tube and didn't have the cash when they were new. Now like those Roadeos
discussed elsewhere they're not trading hands very often so...I'm in!

I think having a comfortable "beater grade" bike that you don't have to
worry about is an excellent idea. You just have to resist the temptation to
swap parts and upgrade! I've never been able to. ;)

[RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-08 Thread David B
In looking for Toyo or Waterford Atlantis geometries, I happened upon the
geometry for the first version of the Clem Smith Jr, which I have.
Geometry-wise it's pretty much the same as the Appaloosa with a couple
minor differences.
Pertinents below:
Clem (59cm first version)
HTA/STA - 71.5/71.5
Effective Top Tube - 64cm
Seat Tube - 59cm
Chainstays - 56cm

Appaloosa (60cm - current largest size)
HTA/STA - 72/71/5
Effective Top Tube - 64cm
Seat Tube - 60cm
Chainstays - 53.5cm

This now makes sense as to why my switch to drop bars on the Clem was easy
and it rides comfortably with wide drops. And it has more tire clearance
than the Appaloosa. So, Clem it is in the decision whether an Appaloosa
would be worth the frame swap.
So, I guess now the real question is whether or not I sell my Redwood...

Joe,
Welcome to the club. I agree that the Bombadil’s fork is as good as any ever
produced.
As good as the Hunq is and beloved by many; I strongly prefer the Bombadil.
That might only be because the 62cm Hunq lent to me for an extended weekend was
slightly to small for me. My 64cm Bomb is just that the bomb!
Probably why I am still hanging onto a 68cm frame and fork also.

A similar datapoint. I knew that a 59 Roadeo would be perfect for me. At a time
when I didn’t need it, a 59 very early Roadeo frameset came up on the list here
for $1000, and I jumped on it. The seller claimed it had downtube shifter
bosses but it turned out that what he meant was that it had downtube cable
stops. For the miscommunication he gave me a discount.

I proceeded to make room for that Roadeo in my stable. Today it would take a
lot more than I paid to shake it loose.

The Clem certainly is the most versatile and I'd be more inclined to load
up this one for camping trips vs the Redwood. I have 2.1" Thunderburts
right now which are a pretty sweet spot, but lots of options.

Re: [RBW] WTB: 55cm or 56cm Heron

2020-08-08 Thread Rivcyclist
LBleriot go ahead and go for Mike's friend's rando. Those are typically
more expensive with all the add ons, and I already have a nice unused set
of Berthoud bags that I may install on a riv bike I have. I'm looking to
spend a little less. The Denver craigslist lists the heron rando with a
33" standover which is too tall for me, so I may narrow my search to a 55cm
touring or a 54cm road.

I don't disagree with this in practice - and certainly 47mm is enough for

Although many folks are now using GPS based units or smart phone apps,
there are still nice olde tyme wheel-magnet-counting cycling computers
available -- to my eye anyway. My most recent cyclocomputer purchase was a
Cateye Strada Slim which I like better than any other traditional cycling
computer I've owned over the years. Very small unit with big display,
lightweight (if that matters), wireless, batteries last multiple seasons.

I also have Garmin Touring GPS based unit, which I like, but that's really
a very different animal. If I need/want turn-by-turn routing, which I often
do, then I'm grateful to have the GPS option. But if navigation or
performance data for post-ride analysis isn't needed then the Cateye is way
more convenient, smaller, lighter, doesn't need to be charged prior to each

Garmin’s various computers or Wahoo’s gps units are what the world has moved
onto. I have a wahoo element bolt that I like. Requires no sensors and the
battery lasts a long time. It seems to not lose gps signal like the garmins
I've had in the past. The biggest plus is a super easy to read screen that is
simple to go from one data field to like 12 all on the same data page. Makes it
easy to show exactly what you want to show.

Re: [RBW] Re: Weird handlebar idea

2020-08-08 Thread Patrick Moore
I laugh at this question (in nostalgic exhilaration, not scorn) because
I've had the same dilemma for dirt surface bikes. I want a low, narrow
cruising position for tarmac, and a wide, closer-up position for dirt.

What all this reminds me of is: the original issue Moustache Bar. Though I
tried close and high, I didn't like it, and always went back to low and
far; IOW, set them up much like road drop bars. This gave me a narrow,
long-reach position on the hoods (set up per Grant's original suggestion),
and a much wider and closer position by sitting up and holding on to the
ends of the bar.

These 2 positions are very good, but -- and this is me, only -- my left
palm is so sensitive that only the ramps and hoods of a road drop bar setup
(I tried 6-7 different, wide, flared offroad drops and hated them all) is
comfortable for more than a few miles, thus ruling out the M-bar for
anything ridden for over 10 miles.

[RBW] Re: What role does your Joe A. fill?

2020-08-08 Thread Mark Roland

And yet, I just rode in the pouring rain the other day with my centerpull
brakes, equipped with vintage 35-year-old pads, and stopped just fine. I
also ride frequently with a buddy who has a Cosmic Stallion (in the sharp
black/white/gold colorway), and I stop just as quickly as he does.

Rim brakes have been safely stopping bikes for billions of miles. It will
be a while before discs catch up to that record. Not to start a disc vs rim
thing, we've been there. Just pointing out that rim brakes are not "less
effective." Maybe you like the feel of your particular set of disc brakes
better than the particular rim brakes you've used. But there are all kinds
of disc brakes and all kinds of rim brakes, so it's kind of silly to make
generalizations, never mind ones with no factual data. I would not call rim
brakes "retro" just yet, though that is subjective.

Re: [RBW] Re: Suggestions on my aspiring Riv-style build?

2020-08-08 Thread Patrick Moore
This is the story of my life, circa 1990 until circa 2012 (tho' the bike
building begins far earlier; built my first bike from scratch -- bought
frame and scavenged parts in high summer -- Nov/Dec, southern hemisphere!
-- 1970). Buy cheap, upgrade at huge cost, sell cheaper, repeat until you
have spent a great deal of $$ and the lesson has sunk in.

Now I am in the enviable position of owning only bikes that are customs or
ones selected and refurbished according to my own wishes. It would have
been cheaper to go custom from the beginning -- except for the fact that I
learned what I want by making all those mistaken upgrades in the first
place.

I know one person who thinks you should ride a Riv through salt and snow and
lock it up outside the bar, it's Grant. He designs them to be used and is
famously appalled to see an older one in showroom condition.

Forget dumping money into an old Bridgestone or Specialized, find a new or used
Clem, Hillborne, Appaloosa or Atlantis and ride it everywhere!

Mark,

I think the Clem L is a great platform for the juice, but as Dave alluded to it
can be tricky to fit a battery on the toptube (where the bottle cage bolts are)
because they're often the longer than the amount of real estate there. An
ePlatypus would be great.

[RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-08 Thread John H.
Personally, I think you've got all the of the bases covered with the two
frames you already own. That Redwood is super cool and even though it goes
against your "a bike is just a bike" ethos, I think the fact that you've
imbued some of your own personality and tweaked it to fit your needs better
makes it a keeper (not to mention the rarity). With both of those frames
you have a ton of flexibility (within reasonable bounds) to adapt to
whatever riding you want to do now or might want to do in the future.

Re: [RBW] Re: Weird handlebar idea

2020-08-08 Thread Zack Medow
So I maybe didn't describe this well enough. Just imagine a mustache bar
but with the brake hoods in the standard position for a drop bar. So it's
like a normal dop bar, but all parts of the bar are on the same plane. The
idea is to have a normal hoods position, plus a swoop back part of the bar
that's on the same level with the drops.

[RBW] Re: Weird handlebar idea

2020-08-08 Thread Andrew Stevens
https://surlybikes.com/parts/truck_stop_bar
https://www.crustbikes.com/products/wide-load-bar/
https://bikepacking.com/news/ride-farr-supa-wide-handlebar/

I guess the way I'm reading it is you want a narrow road position and a
wider upright position. The general trend in backpacking has been to widen
the bars and to include upsweep from the stem so that its a riser bar with
a wide drop position, so that inverts what I perceive to be your preferred
position, but this trend seems much easier from an engineering standpoint.
I just got those Ride Farr bars: they are wide, but as they are short
reach, with a shorter stem, they feel very natural, and nowhere near as
wide as the widest bars out there nowadays.

You could also go the Jones route, and ride in the "aero" position:

Yeah, I think in the butted tubing case, the riding should dictate rather

Re: [RBW] Re: Earl Craig's Atlantis on the Blug

2020-08-08 Thread R Olson
I think frame size has a lot to do with it, with or without 2 TT. I bet the
main triangle size - the area from the lower top tube to the downtube and seat
tube on the 62 Joe was bigger than the Roadeo, not to mention the longer
chainstays. Tires too. 62 Joe had 50mm Big Apples. I think the forks on
those 1st Gen Joe's weren't as stout either. Of all of them, that was the best
riding bike, almost perfect responsiveness/flex for me. I only got rid of it
because it was too tight in the crotch. That order was just based on my feel
riding the bikes on the same routes with he same level of effort. Nothing
scientific, I didn't measure deflections or anything and others may feel
different if they've ridden them too. I will say the Clem's are definitely more
flexy than the Roadeo though. No question on that in my mind. Not in a bad way
though; still strong, capable bikes. All the bikes are fun to ride. The Roadeo
is extremely responsive, responds instantly to pedal input, reminds me of
stiffer aluminum road bikes that I've had in the past in terms of
responsiveness, but more compliant and comfortable.

mine is the '92 XO-2 so I don't have the lugged frame and fork of the '93

[RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-08 Thread Andy Beichler
What is the bottom bracket drop on your Redwood? Was that built before
Rivendell started using 80 mm of drop for frames? I have an 84 Paramount
touring with 80mm of drop and have played with the idea of putting 650b on
it. I have never made any moves to make it happen due to the bb drop but
if it is the same as a Redwood, I might actually look into it.

[RBW] Re: Suggestions on my aspiring Riv-style build?

2020-08-08 Thread Ray
@Clark I really appreciate the advice, and having already had several bikes
come and go that just didn't quite fit the bill, I know you're right. I
could certainly scrimp and save or add to a bike fund by flipping some
vintage restorations as another user suggested, to pull the cash together
for the dream bike. But I guess what I mean when I say that I'm not in a
position to afford it isn't just that I couldn't get the money but that
even if I did, there's no way I could bring myself to drive something so
valuable through the salt and snow on my commutes or lock it up while I
pick up groceries or go to the bar. I would just worry about it constantly.
And since I really only have room for one commuter/all 'rounder at the
moment I think I'm going to keep it something just nice enough that I enjoy
riding it but not so nice that I'm stressed about it when out of sight.
Maybe that's the wrong philosophy though? Would love to hear from others
who do see their Rivs as commuters.

And as for the dynamo wheelset, lol thanks for the offer but I already have
a hub and light. I just need to get around to lacing it up. Maybe some time
next week.

Hi Benz, thanks for sharing your experience! I do travel a lot.
Internationally sometimes. So the couples make sense to me. I'm 145 pound.
Huqapillar is a little overkill already for most ridings except for some
really heavy load camping or grocery shopping. I shop tons of food during
the qurentine. It did amazing job carrying 50lbs goods. Sometimes I carry 3
big watermelons on the front rack. It still feels very stable with a 70cm
wide bar. Taking the racks off it feels like a fast gravel bike with dirt
drop and supple tires. Stiffness wise, I'm not sure if it will make too
much difference for me since it's already kind of overkilled. That's why I
only use 2.0 - 2.3 tires for hunq. Maybe I should ask rivendell for some
advice about the tube butting!

[RBW] Re: Suggestions on my aspiring Riv-style build?

2020-08-08 Thread Surlyprof
I had similar experiences as Clark did. I went through bikes by Surly, Bianchi
and SOMA trying to outfit them as Riv-like country bikes. I spent a few
thousand dollars upgrading parts on each bike and never achieved the ride
quality I had experienced test riding Rivs. I eventually sold all those bikes
at a substantial loss and finally bought the Hillborne I should have bought
initially. 8 or 9 years later, I still own (and love) my canti-Hillborne which
is dialed in to my personal tastes (learned from the other bikes) Although I
also bought a dedicated mtb a couple of years later, I still like throwing on
my trail wheelset and taking the Hillborne out on fire trails. It is by far
the most comfortable bike I’ve ever owned. I can’t see ever replacing it.

[RBW] Re: Suggestions on my aspiring Riv-style build?

2020-08-08 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Ray,
Your current scenario echoes one of mine from several years ago and I would
also caution you on the potential growth of expense in upgrading this or that.
Reflecting on my own progression the hands on learning that came with all my
parts swapping is invaluable but came at a hefty cumulative price tag when all
was said and done. I ultimately purchased a complete Rivendell Clem Smith Jr.
when the 65cm became available for pre-order. The irony is that I’d have been
able to buy the real deal sooner had I not spent all my time and funds tweaking
my old MTB, but I’d have been less informed and potentially less happy had I
not waited for the Clem.

You don’t specify what parts you do or do not already have nor what specific
Riv model you are most drawn to, but if this entire project is beginning from
scratch I’d suggest outlining your parts wishlist (bars, racks, etc.) and
adding up costs.

In my case I had a stash of spare parts but still needed 29er wheels for the
Clem. The presale complete gave me the better value vs Clem frame and separate
purchase of new wheel set/cranks and time to figure out the rest of the build.

Lots to think about and I have no experience to offer with the Expedition or XO
series but will confirm building your own could be very fun and rewarding just
be prepared to absorb sunk costs even if you end up flipping this or that to
work your way up to an eventual Rivendell frame.

Best,
Brian Cole

So what I am getting from this discussion is, dedicated ebike, get one with
Bosch drive. Converting a Rivendell, one of the Bafang mid-drive systems
offers pedal assist with enough power to be useful on hills, etc., is not
overly complicated, and has good technical support, appears to be a going
concern. Joe, better on a Plat or a Clem L?

This thread, along with the consistently very positive reviews of Clems

buying one of these long-stayed, upright Rivs with an electric motor of
some sort, particularly as I progress ineluctably toward senility; perhaps
 a elegant Copenhagen wheel?

I myself put fewer than 200 miles on my old car between a mid-January
2020 oil change and mid June -- this is not virtue, this is simply a very
quiet life and several bicycles and living near things; my daughter,
Covid-ed home from college in mid-March, put another ~1,200 miles on it
 between 1st May and mid-July.

But for those days when it is windy, or rainy (I have Sou'wester hat
and rain cape and spats), or when I want to carry big loads, an electric
bike may be a real option, and if this bike retains something of the
 "feel"
of the best Rivs I've already owned, then all the better.

With that windup, will you-plural post photos and descriptions of your
electrified Rivendells? And tell us how much they can carry, and how you
 carry it?

 Thanks.
