Re: [RBW] Re: Secret Platy

2021-12-29 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
So happy to have more and more women riding Rivendell bikes. Kudos to Leah
and the many previous original Riv riders who have ridden and posted so
many great pictures and stories about biking. I found Riv because they
made bikes large enough for me; but now I am proud to ride beautiful bikes
that women have embraced as well.
How do I get Grant to design a 68cm Platypus. Maybe I will grab a 64cm
Clem L but I definitely don’t need a full build. I have hoarding
tendencies.

Can anybody who has ridden either or both of those chime in with their
measurements and how the bikes felt? I think the proper solution to this
problem is to just get the 64 L but I am just not sympatico with the
 aesthetics there.

I'm about a 95-96 PBH and ride a 62 Sam pretty comfortably with drops,
would prefer more reach every time I've set it up with flats.

Also, the bike seems to have been excised from the models section of
Riv's site. Anyone know if they are planning on only offering the step
 through model moving forward?

 Thanks!

Jacob,

I have one of these elusive White Rhino 68 cm Atlantis that really DESERVES
a new home. Please contact me via text for pictures and details.
(616)928-4226. Ryan Hankinson

It has S couplers and some beausage but rides identical to a non
couplered one (I had two at one time) would rather sell as full bike and
could likely help you with any level build desired. Also a case is
available if interested in traveling with one of the greatest all-around
bikes ever.

Claimed I would never part with it ever but fell into a 68cm Riv Custom, a
64cm Bombadil, and a XL Susie. each barely trumps the Atlantis at their
speciality. I never dreamed I would ever have 3 such supreme Rivendell's
in my possession. Needless to say I have been bike blessed!

Re: [RBW] Re: The “Is It Normal Or Is It Broken” New Bike Game!

2020-12-07 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch

Leah,
Glad you were able to process and determine a compromise that best meets
your “initial needs” regarding support light rack and saddle bag for the
Platypus. Like all relationships you and the Rowdy Platypus will feel each
other out and come to an understanding about how to function well together
just like you and your old steady workhorse friend the beautiful blue Clem
L did.
Yet all bikes and riders evolve and can handle a large range of riding with
little modifications and tweaks.
My only suggestion is not to embrace the differences and uniqueness of each
so that your role as a rider and who knows maybe as a mechanic ‍
expands as well.

Just Ride! Also 2021 needs to get here ASAP. Great suggestion for
everyone treating themselves to a Platypus or other Riv bike if they hit
their riding goal for the year!

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

 Nov. 23rd, 2020.

I have been waiting for this day for years. This is not an
exaggeration; and those of you with a history on this List know it because
your ears are bleeding from all of the pining I’ve subjected you to. A
metallic red Rivendell mixte - yes, you’ve heard it before.

Rivendell shipped my raspberry Platypus and the parts a month ago.
There was a wait for the hand-built Velocity wheelset and custom anodized
parts from Analog Cycles, but those came today. I dropped everything to
take the load of stuff 35 minutes across town to one of the few bike shops
left in Las Vegas. This bike shop earned my allegiance this summer when
they expertly installed my wheelset and dyno on my Clementine. (I will
 also
admit here that I cried in their parking lot on arrival that day because
their name is Pro Cyclery and I was sure I’d be a joke there.)

I entered the shop with my face masked and my arms full and took in the
scene while I waited for the mechanic. There were 3 other customers in the
store; one man looking at parts, an elderly gentleman complaining about
 his
hybrid bike (“Everything on this bike feels too high!”) and an old duffer
who had planted himself at a high boy table and was watching the mechanics
 work.

The shop manager and the mechanic peered into the box and could see the
seat lug with the cream heart peeking out. That was all it took for the
Platypus to charm them. We moved my boxes of stuff into the mechanics’ bay
(special privileges, what?!) and the mechanic opened the Analog box. There
were mounds of parcels in brown paper wrappings inside.

“Here,” said the mechanic, “We’ll both unwrap them. It will be like
 Christmas.”

The first thing he unwrapped was...a bottle of Vermont syrup.

“Oh, they’re from Vermont,” I explained, “Their shop is actually a
 sugar shack.”

“VERMONT YOU SAY? WHERE IN VERMONT?” boomed the Old Duffer.

“Vermont syrup!” squealed the manager. “Do you know how good Vermont
syrup is?” The mechanic enthusiastically agreed with her, so it was only
right that they should keep it.

We went on with our unwrapping - Ooh, I got teal HEADSET SPACERS -
what’s in yours? Oh, rose bolts, you don’t say! - until we had everything
 laid out.

We went to the computer to input the information. “Ok,” said the
mechanic, “This is another Rivendell...does it have a name?”

“Well, it does, actually,” I said with great hesitation, “It’sa
 Platypus.”

“No it isn’t,” said the mechanic.

“Are you serious?” asked the manager.

“PLATYPUS?! ISN’T THAT WHAT THEY CALL THE MISSING LINK?” boomed the Old
 Duffer.

“Well,” I said, considering, “I don’t know, but did you know they glow
 in the dark?!”

Tonight I got a call from the mechanic. He’s started my build early and
will be doing cabling in a couple of hours. He wants to know how high I’d
like my bars so he can cut the cables for a perfect, customized look. I
have never gotten a call like that from a bike store. I’m cautiously
optimistic that this is all going to work out just fine...

 _

 Nov. 25th.

The shop was swamped today. The air compressor cracked. These were the
explanations offered up, and I barely heard them. My nails are painted
raspberry metallic, I am wearing hard pants (that’s what we call jeans in
the pandemic!) and all for naught. Naturally, because it is 2020, the bike
will not be ready for TWO more days because

[RBW] Rivendell Shipping

2020-11-12 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
I emailed Will to inquire about the shipping of the Demo Large Gus I
purchased.

He replied that Mark and James are working on getting the Sams out.
Stephen is working individually on the shipping of all the demos customers
took off their hands promptly when they hit the garage sale page!

Everyone's situation may be slightly different but everyone is eager to get
bikes to ride, build, or just escape some of the going ons in the world.

I think it is a great approach and assume quickly getting out the non
prepped bikes would be much quicker than the prepped ones and obviously
full builds. Anyone getting a full build is lucky to have Mark dialing it
in. Regular mechanics are a plenty, great mechanics are rare, and
exceptional one like Mark is worth waiting on.

To all receiving new bikes go forth safely and ride!

Ryan Hankinson (+1 Gus -3 great bikes soon)

2020-08-08 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Joe,
Welcome to the club. I agree that the Bombadil’s fork is as good as any ever
produced.
As good as the Hunq is and beloved by many; I strongly prefer the Bombadil.
That might only be because the 62cm Hunq lent to me for an extended weekend was
slightly to small for me. My 64cm Bomb is just that the bomb!
Probably why I am still hanging onto a 68cm frame and fork also.

Nothing frivolous about a highly discounted bike score. Especially a perfect

Re: [RBW] Re: Travel bikes

2020-06-22 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jay,

There are two really nice slightly used NWT Bike Friday’s with Rohloff hubs (2
previous European Tours). One large one Small, designed for 6’2” male rider
and a 5’3” female rider.

Possibly the seller could give your relevant info about your travel desires as
well.

Could Buy both Now for $5000 plus $80 shipping each.
Almost $1 of bikes with most of the modifications you would want.

I agree frequently making modifications can eat up the cost difference from
going new but in this case either your new bikes will depreciate significantly
for you or you could essentially try these with little additional depreciation.

If you each are within 2-4 inches of the original owners I would believe you
could dial these in based on my experience getting a Bike Friday modified
easily for me at 6’7”.

Just a option. I would offer the seller $4000 for both and you might have 2
bikes for the price of less than one .

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

Unless there is another Patrick Moore in the world I think your bike has
limited resale value. Maybe I do not understand your unique preference for
single speed fixed gear cycling. However one of my favorite Rivendell’s is my
68cm Quickbeam which I will never part with.
I see your Goodrich modified Rivendell personally as a fancy Quickbeam or Frank
Jones.
Frame and fork I would estimate as $900-$1200.
Racks and fenders may or may not be of interest to a buyer.

Just one large man‘s (100 PBH) opinion.

Re: [RBW] Travel bikes

2020-06-18 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jay,

Knowing your regular bike size and your wife's makes a huge difference
especially regarding comfort! I am 6’6” once had a 66cm bike Friday which road
comfortably and surprisingly like my other full size bikes. Yet my wife
thought I looked like a bear on a bike in a circus. The packing took just as
long almost as assembling and packing a bike with S couplers. If you can
invest 20 minutes on each end only a break away bike will ride with the comfort
and familiarity I would want CC touring 40+ mile days slowly exploring.
I have had 3 Rivs with couplers. A 62cm Custom, a 68cm Atlantis, and a 53cm
Atlantis for my wife. All are packable in a 26x26 x8 case. Only the Atlantis
took over 20 minutes.
I have ridden a Brompton and BF 16” wheeled bikes and would only use in urban
situations and if using public transportation.
Anyone under 6’ has a very different perspective because the difference between
their foldable bike is not that drastically different as one would be to a 62cm
Hunq.
Maybe I am more susceptible to the variation than many others.
The boat trip is a separate beast. More like a bus I would want a folder
(maybe a Brompton) but could never see myself exceeding 25+ miles a day on one.

Good luck. Biking is an amazing activity to combine with vacationing.
Something about the pace of exploring and observing a new place.

I strongly suggest you go with a cool green. A splash of metallic would be a

I also would discourage you from a contrasting cream head tube; just my

suggestion would be to consider pinstripe outlining the lugs. More bling for

Clark,
They will be available. Rivendell as part of their stellar customer service
always gets extra frames and forks to compensate for issues or damage in
shipping. Once the full bikes get out to their new owners they will release
the extras. Sometimes quickly sometimes slowly sometimes never and they find
their way into a hot corner or rafter at RBW.
Vince is the memory King if you have a random question about number of a
particular size, color, etc it is probably locked away in his brain simply
waiting for a reasonable inquiry.
That said they are swamped and short handed currently getting bikes out as fast
and they can to the individuals who have fully paid for a bike or frame already
(Gus and Susies) doing their stellar job of preparing and checking them first.
Their IG account also says they are hiring another person so they are doing
what they can.

2020-06-07 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
I just want to shout out to the Rivsisters how much joy, enthusiasm, and a
fresh perspective you each are adding to this list.
Welcome Melanie, Roberta and Leah you each already know how much respect I
maintain for you amazing Riv owners.
The fact that you have found, love, and promote Rivendell and Analog is great
for each small business and their bicycle goals.
This has to be good for both. This may sound and be sexist as self examining
of myself has helped me realize that other Rivendell men may often try to
manipulate their daughters, girlfriends, wives, and or boyfriends to join them
in their love of bikes and simply sharing an activity together at a level that
is not ideal. In the spirit of everything going on in the world I suggest
everyone listen to the true voice of those being encouraged.

So much nicer and rewarding to let others find their own level of joy and
enjoyment in the world of cycling. Whether that is tubed or tubeless, helmeted
or helmetless, masked or face free.

Long live the Rivsisters!

Just ride and let ride!

[RBW] Re: Admissions of Things You Ought to Have Known But Did Not: A Thread

2020-05-13 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
My admissions have more to with the growth of my bikes than mechanical lessons.
I consider myself a complete novice when I started my own maintenance and
repairs. With low or no expectations one can expect mistakes and simply learn
from them. Fortunately none of my maintenance has cost me financially really.
Now regarding hunting and finding jumbo Rivendells that fit my almost 100PBH
measurement I make mistakes all the time justifying the next addition due to
their rarity and long stretches of nothing coming up for sale.
Several times I have justified a purchase telling myself I would sell 1 or 2
off following the new purchase.
Now I realize my failure at following through with that behavior. The new plan
is to sell first before purchasing a new jewel when it presents itself.
I have a special credit union checking account earning 3% interest linked to a
Paypal account which is the new criteria I use for new bike desires. No money
no bike/wheels/parts/etc.
Since bikes are my main vice in retirement I feel ok with my childlike wanting
desires and have a mature adult like check and balance system.

Ryan Hankinson

Although I think that approach is wise and often successful it can be difficult

John not in my opinion. The Hunqa has a 6* upslope. Whereas the original AHH
had almost a level top tube.

Length of tube and angles are just a few of the variables that change to make
direct correlations not always likely.

Rivendell has lots of Geometry charts to search through and I recommend
learning what key measurements mean the most to you and then trust yourself.
Although almost everyone on this list helps with the best of intentions they
might confuse you even further if you solicit the open opinions 

Bill,

You will love the Hubbuhubbuh. Such a good bike and keeps you and another
rider connected. Breaks the Social Distancing protocol currently. I was
dialing in both of mine (long story) recently and during test rides all the
Michiganders out for health fresh air seem to think there is nothing more funny
than yelling that it looks like I lost someone as a ride by them all.

Bill,
If it is time to part with it or consolidate the fleet; however if you love the
bike. But need a boost beyond the single speed. I ran a Copenhagen wheel on my
68cm and absolutely love it. Pedal assist just easier acceleration and riding
with a tailwind whenever desired. Up to 30 Miles rides with battery to spare
in ECO.

Can be found Slightly used or NOS on EBay for $700-$1000 no reason to pay
retail.

Can’t recommend them enough.
Had one on my wife’s 53cm 26’ S couplered Atlantis which is to small for her
(hitting the list this week). Needed to get one so I could stay with her on
rides. My personal engine was not enough when she had a boost.

And Yes Leah I have wheel sets that would likely perfectly meet your needs.

[RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-08 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Leah,
I have a wonderful 650B velocity wheel set you may try. Also have g-ones
tires and Hetras you could try. A different size rim will require an
adjustment to brake pads.

It does frustrate me slightly that you ignore my advice about wheel and
tire improvement on ride and weight until 4-5 others state the same claim.
Oh well what do I know.

For the record the least expensive option would have been to simply swap
parts wheels etc from the Betz build over to the Clem to see which
modifications were worth the build.

However since you boxed up the bike before trying the other wheels and had
no mechanic to help you with the swap and now the Benz has a new owner;
therefore shopping for and buying new parts (wheels and tires 1st) buying
used parts or borrowing some from me is really your only options.

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

my beautiful better half on what was a rainy cloudy day. Excited for near 60
degrees and sunshine tomorrow will see if that promising forecast will invoke
my fair weather spouse out for a spin. I can’t even bribe her with ice cream
