[RBW] Re: FS: Shimano Bar End Shifters, Brake Levers, Derailleurs
Hi Folks, I was either off on my prices or the world is ending and no one needs bar ends. I'm guessing it's the former. Everything is still OBO, and I lowered the prices and/or included shipping. Here's what's left. Please message directly with interest. Thanks! -Bob K. in Baltimore - Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#1): Beat up but still function well. Mounts included. $35 shipped. - Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#2): Nice with only a couple minor scuffs. Mounts included. $55 shipped. - Shimano Deore FD-M591: This is a "traditional dual-pull multi-clamp front derailleur." I don't remember why I own this, but it sure seems like a front derailleur! $15 shipped. - Shimano Deore RD-M591: Good shape. It's long-cage and 9-spd. I used it with friction levers on a vintage MTB build for a few months. $30 shipped. Thanks for the info on Cleary, Nathan! I'll look into it. Yes, the $200 price range is perhaps a bit optimistic. I would really like to stick with well cared for used bikes if at all possible, though, and then I can pass it along to another lister in a few years. [RBW] FS: Frances Farfarer Trailer - $450 shipped (obo)
Hi Folks, I decided to wait a while to re-post this great trailer. Need to get the cash out of this so I can keep buying guitar pedals! As stated below in the original posting, I paid $652 shipped from Frances. It's barely used. Save yourself $200 and snag this for $450 shipped (OBO). See below for more info--don't hesitate to make an offer. Note: I'll be on a backpacking trip from Monday-Friday, so I won't get back to you immediately, but I will respond ASAP. Shipping could happen early the following week. Thanks! Bob K. in Baltimore - - - - - Original Posting: Riv Content: The trailer is hitched to my beautiful '09 canti Hillborne in the photos <https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zE2J7B7eBie3PVSiWWC5LZVshxjSmmhS>. Up for sale is my lightly used Frances Farfarer trailer. I've owned it for about two years, and it has spent most of that time de-coupled/disassembled because I haven't had as much time to use it as planned. This is an incredibly capable and nimble trailer, and it weighs in at just under 10 pounds. When loaded properly with the heaviest items toward the bottom, it hardly feels like you're pulling anything at all. I have used it for errands in the general vicinity of my house (groceries, firewood, etc.), hauling my daughter from time to time, and on one ~150 mile tour of the C Towpath here in MD. Works well with both my Sam (700x48) and Troll (26x3). I'm selling it for a couple of reasons: 1) I bought it primarily as a kid-hauler, and while it works well for that purpose, my daughter and I both prefer the forward-facing Weehoo so we can talk a bit more easily. Joshua Muir (maker of the trailer) used it for his daughter for years in Santa Cruz, and he loved it for that purpose. And 2) As mentioned above, I don't use it often enough. Comes with a safety flag (not pictured), metal fender, Schwalbe Big Apple tire, one hitch, and bushing for 27.2 seatpost. If you need a different bushing size, Joshua at Frances has what you need. It has a few scratches/scuffs, but no dings, and the cargo "bag" (which is super heavy duty Cordura) has a couple of small stains. One of the fender stays is slightly bent. Just wanted to point that out because I know how finicky BOBs and RBWs can be about their fenders. *See pictures here* <https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zE2J7B7eBie3PVSiWWC5LZVshxjSmmhS>. If you're interested, you probably know all about this thing, but you can also find more info on the trailer at Frances's website <http://www.francescycles.com/farfarer-trailers> and on Youtube <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSeeqHvphqk>. Price includes shipping anywhere in the continental US, but local pickup (or delivery within Baltimore/DC area) is strongly preferred! I paid $652 shipped from Frances and have only ridden it ~250 miles. And just FYI, I'll be at a conference DC for a week as of tomorrow, so I won't be able to ship it until next weekend or early the following week. Please respond privately with any questions/interest. [RBW] Re: Tires for 2000/2001 Toyo Atlantis with 50mm SKS fenders
Paul, I have no experience with these tires on the Atlantis, nor do I run them with fenders, but both 42 and 48 Shikoros are sublime on my '09 canti Sam Hillborne. The 48s jst fit, and I'm not convinced they've made a world of difference in terms of cushiness as compared to the 42s, but I'm going nowhere fast, so I'll take the float where I can get it. [RBW] Thumb Shifter Recommendations
Until the new Silvers are available, here are some from IRD via Soma. Riv is out of stock at the moment: https://store.somafab.com/ird-power-ratchet-friction-thumb-shifter-set.html If those don’t fit the bill, I’ve had success with older Shimano thumbshifters (Deerhead or otherwise) for friction shifting. I believe they are 6 or 7-speed, but I’ve shifted friction across 8 without issue. [RBW] Has Anyone Rinko'd Their Riv? - Follow Up on Yesterday's Rivendell Email
I take the Vermonter train from Brattleboro to Baltimore every summer after my annual VT bikepacking jaunt. I always use the roll-on service. First year I even squeezed my Troll’s 26x3” tires (barely) with minimal deflation in the hook. Sidenote: Packed the frame bag with about 24 beers that are available in VT and nowhere else. When I got off the train, the ride home was a bit harder than it would’ve been without the beers, but I was pretty satisfied a couple hours later. I digress, but in sum: I highly recommend Amtrak’s roll-on service. Bob K. in Baltimore -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?
I use a Sinewave Beacon on and off-road and love it. Highly recommended! As an aside, I have read about symmetrical and asymmetrical beams before, but I don’t really understand why I shouldn’t use a symmetrical beam on-road. Isn’t the light still far less bright than, say, a car’s headlights? Can’t I just aim the beam bit more at the ground than I would off-road so it doesn’t shine in drivers’ eyes? I’ve never tried the Compass offerings, but I just went on a 200 mile gravel and forest road tour on 27.5x2.25 Thunder Burts, and they are awesome—fast-rolling, enough grip, no flats. [RBW] Re: ISO inexpensive but decent utility bike; possible large BMX or possibly city bike with kickback hub
I know you said used, but Fairdale makes some pretty bulletproof and versatile bikes for cheap. Bonus with new for a rider with less desire to pick up a wrench is that most bike shops (at least my LBS) offer some sort of a service plan for the first year to keep it running well. https://store.fairdalebikes.com/pages/2018-fairdale-bikes/ My buddy just got a Fairdale Weekender and he loves it. That’s $800, but there are a few in the $500 range that might be great. The Flat Bar Surly Crosscheck is around $800 and it comes with a rack. Re: [RBW] Re: The "One Bike" for a featherweight?
I’m 185+ pounds, and I’ve taken my canti Sam on some short mixed-road tours pretty well loaded up and have had no problems whatsoever. It ends up a bit “noodly,” perhaps, but not beyond what I can get used to. It is a ton of fun to ride unloaded, too, and it fits 47/48 mm tires nicely. You didn’t mention a PBH, so I’m not sure if your size would be 650b, though. My 56 isn’t. What about the Crust Romanceur? It fits 650bx48 with fenders and even bigger without—could do 27.5x2.1 Thunderburts. You could also go with the intended 26x2.3 Rat Trap Pass and have comfort for days. [RBW] Thanks Grant
Grant wrote: “It feels like frivolous sinning to write about bikes and poems, when Trump and Sessions are breaking up families in Texas. Is this really one of those political topics that we aren't supposed to voice an opinion on, because we're supposed to be an oasis, or because we don't want to lose customers? I don't think we have any customers who are for separating families, maybe forever, and would justify it under some kind of weird lying banner of patriotism or protecting our country.” Like Justin, I appreciate that Grant uses his platform to speak up about issues that matter to him. I also appreciate the respectful tone with which he approaches such difficult topics. Carry on, Grant, and thanks. Patrick, The Steripen looks cool. You could throw a Sawyer Squeeze in with that to take care of any physical debris in the water. It takes up very little space and weighs next to nothing. [RBW] Re: Why not a suspension-corrected fork/frame?
Tom, I ride very rocky, rutted, rooty, and washed out trails here in MD with a good bit of elevation change—generally 100 feet of gain per mile on average, and often more. My steed is a non-suspension-corrected Surly Troll with 26x3.0 tires. I love the ride and handling to and from the trails, and I never feel limited on the trails themselves. I’ve ridden a very expensive full suspension Santa Cruz on the same trails, and while it was definitely fun, I don’t like the bounce and give of a suspension fork. In terms of design, like someone already said, a suspension-corrected front end requires a shorter headtube—and I’m guessing a different headtube angle—and these things change the ride and comfort of a bike, as well as the handling. [RBW] Re: 26er vs 29er
Erik, I agree that those Hunqapillars look great! You should get one. They fit up to 2.5” tires according to some reports here. That’s straight up comfy-town on trails. I will say, though, that we’re the same size (if I remember right) and I really enjoy my Surly Troll shod with a Jones bar, i40 rims, and 26x3” tires for off-road touring. It’s nimble and super comfortable in ways that the Surly Krampus with 29x3” tires wasnt. The 26” platform is great off-road in the plus sizes, and it’s definitely not dead! I am also building a 27.5” wheelset with WTB i25 KOM rims and 27.5x2.25 Thunderburts to swap on for dirt road tours and riding when I don’t need the full plus-sized tires. I only mentioned the Troll because you mentioned other Surly bikes. IMHO, it’s far superior to the Bridge Club, which seems like a very middle-of-the-road bike to me. I’m sure anything you buy will be awesome, and the Hunq would satisfy your desire for another Riv. I say go for it. [RBW] Anyone in the DMV have a 51 or 55 Hillborne I could test ride?
Hi Alan, I know this isn't what you asked for in your post, but as armchair bike fit specialist, I'd say based on the amount of exposed seatpost in your photo that the bike technically "fits" you. That doesn't mean you wouldn't feel more comfortable on a different size, of course. Yours could also be the one with a longer (59?) top tube, which would definitely make me feel pretty stretched out, too. Mine has an effective 57.5 and it feels pretty good with drops and an 80mm stem. I have more seatpost exposed than you, though. Re: [RBW] How heavy a front load on lowriders on a Rivendell road bike?
I’m not sure as to the actual weight that I’ve loaded up front in lowriders on my Sam for tours, but it’s been significant, and almost definitely 20ish+ pounds. The handling is slower, yes, but is there a bike that doesn’t handle more slowly with 20-25 pounds in front panniers? It would certainly be a bit of a liability in an emergency situation when I needed the bike to handle as nimbly as possible, but that’s par for the course in my experience. For the record, I always balance out the load with 8-10 or so pounds in a Porcelain Rocket Mr. Fusion seat pack. And I, like Jeff, find that I get used to the altered handling rather quickly. I’ll send pictures of the setup a bit later if I get to it. Bob K. in Baltimore -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: '09 Sam Redux
Thanks, folks. And it's always great to get a solid APPROVE from Bill. I wanted to add that this is my first foray into the world of Silver Shifters, having switched over from friction shifting with Shimano barcons. So far, I much prefer the feel of the Silvers, especially the wonderful little ratcheting action. Perhaps my favorite friction shifters ever are the super cheap-o Sunrace thumbies that can be had on Amazon for about $5, mostly because of the feel of the ratcheting. While the Silvers are slightly more subtle, they give just enough feedback to set themselves apart from smooth/no-ratchet friction shifters like the Shimanos--that is, if you're set on friction and don't want/need an indexing option. And so, if you've been on the fence about trying Silvers, I'd say that you should give them a go. I'm glad I did. [RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru
Oh, and I should add that I would probably go with a front seat to start things off with an infant and move to the trailer around two. Again, it all depends on the type of riding you want to do. She loved the trailer right when we started using it (around 1?) and would still love it if I hadn't sold it. Bad move! [RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru
I have tried several scenarios for kid hauling: 1. Thule Ridealong: This is a rear seat that attaches to the seat tube. Easy to remove, but the ugly attachment/base stays on the seat tube when the seat is removed unless you want to take the time to remove it, too. The design gives the seat a bit of suspension. I found this to be awesome in normal road/town riding, but the suspension was a bit much when on a rail trail or fire road. If town riding is generally what you'll be doing, and you want a rear seat, you could certainly do worse than the Ridealong. 2. Cougar Chariot (2): I got the two-seater so I could put some other stuff in there along with my daughter. She loved this trailer, and quite frankly, I don't know why I sold it. I do know that I couldn't use it on the C towpath (double track) because of its wheelbase, so I sold it for a single-wheeled trailer. 3. Frances Farfarer: After strongly considering the Weehoo, I went with the Farfarer because it's just over 1/3 of the weight. I also liked that it was made by a framebuilder in CA. He lives in Santa Cruz, and has documented the trailer's use with his daughter. It's incredibly lightweight (9-ish pounds?) and is a really well-designed trailer. Unfortunately, even my rather tall daughter tends to sink down into the trailer. She doesn't seem to like it nearly as much as the erstwhile Chariot. We also didn't end up doing the C tour last year, so I'm considering unloading the Farfarer for a Weehoo or giving it another try since she's a year older (and bigger). I'm on the fence about keeping this trailer in general because it is super versatile, but with its resale value just south of $500, it's pretty tough to justify keeping it around if I'm not using it regularly. Overall, the Weehoo seems pretty ideal, and if I knew what I know now, that's where I would've gone for #3. I do think the fully-covered trailers are a great option if the roads where you live are wide enough that you're not concerned about drivers giving you enough space. I also would highly recommend going with the double. It's not that much wider, and it gives you a ton of extra space for stuffed animals, snacks, groceries, etc. Bob K. in Baltimore -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Albastache (or Moustache) Brake Lever Positions
You could do bar end (“reverse aero”?) levers with the Albastache, but then you’d be unable to use your bar end shifters. I don’t think you’d want to mount levers anywhere else on those bars, if only because it would look strange. What about just going Albatross and buying brake levers? You can get cheap, decent Tektro levers for V or canti brakes for like $20. Could fix your geo/reach/height issue without even a new stem. I know that’s not what you asked, but I thought I’d throw it out there. If you’re really looking to stick with road-style levers, Albastache are nice. [RBW] WTT: B17 (honey) for C17 Carved (black/slate)
Hi Folks, I am looking to trade a comfy, used honey B17 for a comfy, used black or slate carved C17. The saddle shows some wear/sag, but we’ll call is slightly beausaged. Bolt has been turned very little, if at all. I thought about lacing it, but I’ll leave that decision up to you. I don’t care too much about the condition of your C17 (again, carved) as long as it’s not thrashed. Willing to put a bit of cash in the pot to make the deal happen if needed. The B17 is not for sale. Trades only, please, and please reach out directly for pictures or to make me an offer. Thanks! [RBW] Re: Who wants a Hunqadiscer?
IME, mechanical disc brakes work really well. Hydros work really, really well. I agree with you, Mark, that we humans tend to embrace new technology rather quickly, often without considering consequences. However, mechanical disc brakes on a bike are—at this point—tried and true. I’m a philistine and a ham-fisted novice bike mechanic, and I’ve been able to figure out how to adjust both hydraulic and mechanical disc brakes by watching a couple of YouTube videos. The cr720s on my Sam are much more annoying to set up, actually. In other words, I don’t think mechanical disc brakes on a bike are one of those technologies of which we should be wary. I have no skin in the game here. I likely wouldn’t buy a disc Hunq because I already like the disc Surly Troll I own. I also don’t think Riv will make a disc-braked bike, but it’s fun to dream. [RBW] Re: Rivendell prices going up.
While it’s possible to get another MUSA bike for cheaper than a MUSA Rivendell, it won’t ever magically morph into a Rivendell. So there’s that. I don’t, however, think it’s ludicrous to have a conversation about the price change. Clearly, Grant knew it would be a big deal because he mentioned it a few times prior to it actually happening. I’m assuming he’s worried about how the pricing will affect business, and I’m guessing he also kept prices where they were for so long (years!) because of said worry. I also don’t think anyone has been out of line in voicing opinions on either side. Bikes are awesome. They’re also expensive. (And they should probably be even more expensive!) That’s the dance that Rivendell has danced so graciously all these years, and I appreciate the thoughtfulness and transparency that goes into their decision-making. I’m not really sure what sort of a contribution this was, but I tried. [RBW] Not ugly quill to threadless: Can it be done?
I am exploring moving on from my Sam, but I want to give a drop bar setup the ol’ college try before I do. I like the Salsa Cowbell 2 bar, but it’s only available in 31.8 clamp diameter, and I don’t want to pay the $80 premium for the VO quill stem with removable face plate to match it. And so, I’m considering the dreaded quill-to-threadless conversion route. I find them to be highly ugly. I’m wondering, though, if anyone has a method I could use to mitigate the ug-factor. AKA is there a way to cover up the skinny part of the converter stem below the threadless stem’s base? If this makes any sense whatsoever, I would welcome any/all ideas. [RBW] Re: Feeler WTT: Albastache cockpit for drop bar cockpit
Hi Doug, I liked my friend's drop bar setup vs. my Albastache for a few reasons, but mostly because I like the flats on drops more than I like the swept-back feel of Albastache, Moustache and Albatross, all of which I've had on my Sam, and I ride the hoods pretty often on my Albastache setup anyway, which I can still do with drops. Ultimately, if a trade doesn't materialize, I'm still happy enough with my setup. Changing it up via trade gives me a way to experiment without spending money, which I've been itching to do even though I haven't ridden my Sam much in the past several months because I'm spending a lot more time on trails with my 2017 Troll. [RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17
For about a decade, I rode B17s exclusively. I then I went on a short tour with a bunch of rain in the forecast and didn't want to fuss with leather--not that my saddles haven't gotten wet many times over the years, but regardless. I threw on a relatively narrow Selle plastic saddle and went for it. I loved it. But honestly, as much as I liked the feel and no-fuss nature of it, it was too ugly. I demoed a C15 to see if that would be a good middle ground and I hated it at first. Felt like a rock. Made some adjustments and took a few more rides and all of a sudden I liked it. Ordered a C15 carved and couldn't be happier. I still love the B17 on my Sam, but the C15 carved ticks all the boxes for me in terms of comfort, good looks, and lack of fuss. [RBW] Re: Does anybody ride 75+ km with non-drop-bar handlebars?
I did a few 50+ mile rides with Albatross bars on my Sam Hillborne. Ultimately, I changed them out for Albastache because the sweep of the Albatross made me feel cramped. I like the Albastache setup and pull a trailer with my 2.5 year old using that bike all the time. Works like a charm. Worked fine with the Albatross, too. I've also done long rides with a Surly Open Bar and a Jones Loop Bar. Both are great. I prefer the Jones, but the Surly was super comfy on a mostly off-road tour. I second what everyone above said about comfort being king. If I had to choose one of the aforementioned bars, I'd go Jones. Plenty of hand positions, and all of them are comfy. [RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)
This is always an interesting thought experiment, if nothing else. I've decided that n=2 for me: a Sam (with 42 Soma Shikoros) and a Surly Troll (with 3" WTB Rangers). I'm going to roll with this combination for the foreseeable future--maybe even take DP's advice and do three years--that seems like the minimum amount of time one would need to practice contentment. As an interesting connection, my stable "ballooned" from one to two bikes after my daughter was born. She's 2.5 now, and the Sam has proven to be capable as a kid hauler, but I'm happy to add the Troll to take over that role. That said, in your situation, with your bikes, I'd sell what I have and buy the Atlantis and two wheelsets. As the father of a 2.5 year old, I don't think that swapping wheels is that big of a deal. If you've got cantis or v-brakes (or any other brakes) it's a super simple process and while it might add a few minutes to you getting out of the house, if that amount of time is going to affect whether or not you can go for a ride, you probably shouldn't be going in the first place. Also, it's not like you can't commute on big nobbies--or ride trails on slicks--if the three minutes to swap wheels is really going to make or break your ride. So yeah, I'd say get the Atlantis. I would've bought one back in 2009 when I bought my Sam if I could've afforded it, and even though my two-bike stable more than takes care of everything that an Atlantis can do (and more), I still covet one. David, Running my Albastache with an 80 mm Technomic and Tiagra aero levers set up roughly 8.5" apart and angled slightly up. No idea of this is "standard" positioning or not. [RBW] Re: WTB: XL/XXL trail bike
Reid, I spent a season riding the very rooty and rocky trails here in MD on my Sam. I was definitely "underbiking," but it was a lot of fun, and I never even once had to fix a flat. Part of that "luck" is due to the fact that I don't mind walking, and I pick my way down hills rather than bomb 'em. That said, the only downside to a Sam as a trail steed in my experience is the low bottom bracket. But if you don't mind walking from time to time and lifting your bike over a particularly large log versus rolling over it, it's not a big deal. And all of this riding I did was on 42mm Soma Shikoros, which are by no means off-road tires. I had Smart Sams on a vintage mountain bike and really liked 'em. That said, after those few months of trail riding, I did spring for a rigid plus bike--first a Surly Krampus, and now a Surly Troll--and I can say without question that I have more fun riding the same trails on the Krampus vs. my Sam (Troll is not yet built-up). The trails are pretty darn technical, and I've never *needed* suspension. Anything a hard tail can do, IMHO, a rigid bike can do, especially a plus or fat bike. YMMV. Re: [RBW] FS: Tubus Tara + mounts; Nitto 32F mini-rack; XT 10-spd RD-M773; Surly Seatpost Clamp 30mm; Problem Solvers Direct Mount Adapter
Bump with new prices on the racks and rear derailleur. Pictures to follow this evening. *Nitto 32F Mini-Rack*--*$110 shipped/OBO*--I bought this with my Sam in 2009, but it's only been (off and) on my bike for the past year or so. It's the model with the front tab. Great shape. Riv sells them for $140. *Tubus Tara (silver!) + Tubus LM-1 fork mount adapters*--*$90 shipped/OBO*--I bought this setup a year ago. I used it on a couple of short tours. There is some slight wear on the rails, but overall great shape. Full disclosure: You can get the black version direct from Germany for around $80 shipped. The adapters would be roughly $15-20 extra. If you want silver, you can get a new one from the UK for about $135 shipped (including adapters). It's not a shiny silver, but it's pretty (enough), and it will match your bike well (enough). Would prefer not to separate the rack and adapters. *XT RD-M773 (long cage)*--*$35 shipped/OBO*--I bought this from a list member a few weeks back for my new Troll, but I decided to go a different direction. Slight wear from (I assume) installing/uninstalling the rear wheel. *Surly Stainless (black) seatpost clamp, 30mm clamp diameter*--*$17 shipped OBO*--This came with my Troll. It's new. I replaced it with a gold one because gold is pretty. Save a few bucks off retail ($20 shipped) and help me fund the rack. *Problem Solvers Direct Mount FD Adapter for 68/73 BB shell (34.9 with shims for 31.8)*--*$30 shipped OBO*--It's new-in-packaging. [RBW] Panniers vs Bikepacking bags
Thanks for posting this, Will. It's definitely an interesting read. To me, his testing proves that bikepacking bags don't make all that much sense for a relaxed tour that will generally be on tarmac and/or relatively well cared for gravel roads. If the time penalty for front panniers vs. bikepacking bags given the same amount of effort over the course of 60 miles is just a measly 15 minutes, why not go with panniers? Again, this only really applies for road touring, though, because panniers (front or rear) are pains in the butt on off-road hike-a-bikes with lots of elevation change. That said, his test assumes the same weight for all setups, which generally wouldn't be the case since most folks, myself included, would take a few more things given the extra cargo capacity of panniers. One side note: I've only taken one trip since buying a Porcelain Rocket Mr. Fusion seat bag--my setup was front low rider panniers, a few small dry bags (tools, rain gear, etc.) in a front basket, and the PR seat bag--but I would've rather used a traditional saddlebag like my Carradice Super C, mostly because it's so much easier to access the contents vs. the PR bag. I'm waiting to make a final call on this, though, until I take a couple of wholly off-road trips this summer. I might find that the benefits of the seat bag will outweigh the small annoyance of packing and unpacking. Hopefully I didn't digress too much here. Looking forward to hearing others' thoughts. [RBW] Front Racks: Nitto 32F vs. M18 (And possible WTT/FS 32F)
Hey Folks: I have a Nitto 32F that I bought with my Sam in 2009. I haven't used it much, and it has spent most of its life in a closet. Riv's rating for its capacity is 4.4 pounds. This is probably very conservative, but I am not one to test fate. The M18 seems like a great little rack, and while I can see potential failure points there as well, I like that the struts are adjustable rather than fixed like the 32F. It's also rated up to 5kg, more than double the 32F. If I sold the 32F, I would like $120 shipped OBO. I would love to hear from anyone with experience using both of these racks. Should I just stick with the 32F because the rating is probably super conservative or should I swap over to the M18? What else should I be thinking about here? I have also considered acquiring an R14 to be mounted up front a la Grant. Would that be a good call? Any other suggestions? FWIW, this rack will spend most of its time on my new Surly Troll (and some on my Sam), which I will ride mostly off-road and to/from trails. It will support a saddlebag mounted up front and/or a basket, depending on the day. [RBW] Re: WTB-50-52 CM Frame
Peter H is a very close friend of mine. He and I have talked quite a bit about different ideas for his wife's new bike. Her expressed requirements for this new-to-her bike, which will replace a single speed road-style setup with too-low handlebars and too-skinny tires, are the following: 1. It's gotta be comfortable. 2. It's gotta have gears. Call me cheap, but I think he can find a bike, like this MB-3 on his local CL (https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/bik/6101414868.html), change out the stem and bars, maybe get some new tires, and he'd have a bike that would meet her very meager requirements and be geared, comfortable, and of course useful and fun for years to come for less than $350. It could probably be done for even less, but the above example was close at hand. Anybody have something like that around that isn't getting used much that would fit a 5'5" woman with an ~80cm PBH? Alternatively, am I silly for trying to tell my good buddy how to spend his money!? :) Bob K. in Baltimore -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. If anyone else is interested, I have a set of these bars in nearly identical condition to Michael's that I'd sell for the same price. PM me with any interest or for pictures. Thanks. Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Fork with Canti Posts for 650b Homer
Fargo could be good, but keep in mind that most models only clear 29 x 2.2 or 2.3 nominal. A used earlier generation Surly Ogre or Troll could do the trick. Both will clear 2.5" tires in their respective wheel sizes and even bigger up front (newer models have even more generous clearances). I have also read about folks doing the Divide on Long Haul Truckers, although I can't imagine they didn't rattle their teeth out of their skulls on some of the "roads" Mark described in this thread and elsewhere. I just think you'll be happier on something other than your AHH, and if you're going to take the time to do an awesome ride like this, you should have a bike that will add to the fun. My two cents. [RBW] Re: 54.5 (I think?) atlantis on ebay
I've exchanged a couple eBay messages with The Pro's Closet in the past about some vintage parts. They're always courteous and give plenty of information. Their bikes and framesets occur to me as overpriced, but then again, it's hard to put a price tag on used bikes, and as people say here all the time, they're worth whatever someone is willing to pay. This particular Atlantis has a really nice bunch of parts, and while it doesn't fit my wallet nor my skeletal structure, I'm envious of whoever ends up with it!
