Re: [RBW] Re: NorCal Cycling

2022-12-20 Thread James Warren
When a Mason-Dixon line needs to be established in CA, it'll be called the
Safeway-Vons line.

Quiz: for any major north-south freeway or highway, what are the two cities
that straddle the Safeway-Vons line?

Related question: King City: which store do they have?

Related Cliff Claven Trivia: when I was a kid growing up in Los Angeles and
San Diego suburbs, Vons and Safeway were two different stores. In 1989 they
merged, and all of our Southern California Safeways got renamed Vons. So
many of our suburban shopping centers ended up with two Vons's as anchors
on either end when it used to be Safeway at one end and Vons at the other.

Hi Brenton,

Big Ben 50s are the absolute limit of what fits on my 62 cm Hillborne. Bike
rides great with them!

You might be able to go to the Riv site and see the actual width of those tires
as read on calipers. I’ll bet it’s something under 50 mm.

Re: [RBW] 2014 Side Pull Sam Questions

2021-10-28 Thread James Warren
Ben,

I'd have to do some research to answer all of your questions, but first I'd
like to point out that my Sam is a 62 cm from 2014, and it just might be
bicycle perfection. I hope you enjoy yours, and I really think you will.

I do recall that circa 2013-14, some Sams were painted single-color, some
of which were greyish blue and then later sage. I thought they looked
pretty good. I seem to recall your single-color sage looked great.

Enjoy!

Re: [RBW] Roadini or Homer

2021-09-26 Thread James Warren

Bones,

I have a Homer, Hillborne, and Rambouillet.

The Homer and Hillborne are closer to the same than the Homer and Ram are. My
guess is that you didn’t overshoot. Homer and Hillborne are both country bikes.
Let’s say I were to settle on two bikes and wanted one to be a light feeling
“road bike.” If I had a Roadini, I’d have that covered, and Sam could by my
country bike.

Enjoy,
Jimmy

Re: [RBW] Ride Quality Difference between the Atlantis and Clem H?

2021-06-24 Thread James Warren

I’m an Atlantis owner and a family member of a Clem owner, which I have ridden.
Disclaimer: that Clem is 2 cm above my ideal size.

If it were me, I’d save up and get an Atlantis, especially if pre-owned. A used
one probably has less tire room, but still has a lot of tire room, and the
newest ones, according to the Riv site fit 2.4”, which I think matches the
Clem. And it rides better, more efficient. It’s all around a more versatile
bike if you’re looking for a do-all with road-riding in mind as well as trails.

And even if you find one of the oldest models (mine’s generation 1 from 2000)
the tire clearance will still be close to 2”. And the tire room only got better
as the model evolved from 2000 to now.

I’ve used my Atlantis for every kind of riding I enjoy (which does not include
steep downhill fast rocky mountain biking!)

Touring - amazing
Dirt road bike packing - amazing
Commuting - amazing
Cross country mountain biking and dirt climbing - amazing
Drop bar road riding - very good

Re: [RBW] WTB 60cm Rambouillet or Sam Hillborne

2021-05-26 Thread James Warren
That's interesting, because the Rambouillet TT is also 60 cm. Whatever your
handlebar height is on the Poprad and JPWeigle, for the same stem, I'd have
to think it'll be a lot higher with a 64 cm Ram. In addition to it being a
bigger frame, Rams bring the handlebar up compared to level top tubes by
virtue of that 2 degree TT rise. Also, the head tube lug is vertically
extended, which adds even more height. Do the Poprad and JPWeigle have
level top tubes? Also, do you know your preferred saddle height. Saddle
height can be a great indicator of a Riv that fits.

Mine is 81 cm, and a 64 cm Ram is almost just right for me. 65 cm is
probably my ideal, but they never made that.

And my best size for a 6 degree Riv is 61.5 cm.

Re: [RBW] WTB 60cm Rambouillet or Sam Hillborne

2021-05-24 Thread James Warren
Ram: 2 degrees of TT upslope
Sam: 6 degrees of TT upslope

At that frame size, every one degree adds 1 cm of head tube height. So on
paper, the handlebar height of a 60 cm Sam is about the same as a 64 cm Ram.

The "new" sizing regime of Rivs with the 6 degrees of TT upslope was new
around when the Sams were introduced, maybe 13 years ago? Bombadil was also
the new bike bike around that time that pioneered the new greater TT angle.

Before that, the models tended to be around 2 degrees. Ram was never made
again after the "expanded" frame geometry was unleashed, so Rams are all 2
degrees. (AHH's, on the other hand, have come in both styles, depending on
when made. And logic says the same is true of Atlantis, although in the old
days, the Atlantis was a wild one with 2.5 degrees (!) of TT upslope. For
AHH and Atlantis, the switch to Made In Taiwan is also the switch from low
angle to high angle.)

[RBW] Orange Roadini sighted Palos Verdes, CA, 4/24/21

2021-04-25 Thread James Warren

Great looking orange Roadini, drop bars, and bar end shifters. Near Malaga Cove
Plaza on Palos Verdes Drive West. I was envious as I was in a hurry for
something work-related, and I had to drive by wishing I was out riding. I hope
the ride was good; a few good ones to be had in the area. This was Saturday,
4/24.

Re: [RBW] Sam Hillborne frame size?

2021-04-18 Thread James Warren

Jim,

Before Riv started offering frames with 6 degree top tube upslope, the top tube
upslope was roughly 2 degrees. This was the Riv norm from 1994 until whenever
the Bombadil came along (’07, ’08?, I don’t remember the exact year.) Atlantis
had 2.5 degrees, AHH had 1.5 degrees, many other models had 2 degrees.

With those 2 degree frames, my ideal size is 64 and 65 cm, and that’s what I
rode before Bombadil and Hillborne came along with the 6 degree upslope.

Then in 2010, I got a 60 cm Hillborne, I found that I could make that size work
well for me. When they started offering the frames with more upslope to the top
tubes, they called it “Expanded Geometry.” It’s ended up being a really good
thing, because I’m pretty sure it improves the dirt capability.

Enjoy your Hillborne! Amazing frames

Re: [RBW] Hi & Questions...

2020-12-26 Thread James Warren
Philip,

If you don’t need tires bigger than 700x48, the Sam Hillborne can do anything
and feels fastest of the Rivs I ride (Ram, Atlantis, Hunqapillar, Quickbeam.)

In theory, the Ram should feel fastest and maybe is, but my comfort with
Albatross handlebar and the bigger tires for the mixed terrains has me happier
for longer on the Hillborne. I might psychologically covert that to “feeling
faster” over the long haul.

Hillbornes are amazing. But the question of tire size limitation is key.

From looking at the Rivendell range it would seem that the Sam Hillborne

[RBW] Switch from Brooks B17 to Brooks Cambium C17 - Does the seat slide further back

2020-11-18 Thread James Warren
Hi All,

I had a Brooks B17 (copper rivet nice one) on my Hunqapillar. I just
changed to a C17. I tried to measure to see if where I sit on the seat is
now further to the rear of the bike if both saddles are as far back on
their rails as they can be. But it's a little hard to measure in order to
be quantitative.

But when riding the bike, I feel like maybe I am sitting further back to
the rear now. Or is it an illusion?

Has anyone else had this feeling or experience or success actually
measuring this comparison?

Thank you,
Jimmy Warren

Big Ben 50’s under sidepull brakes on a Hillborne. That is absolutely the

Your Sam is from batch of orange when the head tube was not cream. It was the

Re: [RBW] Re: AHH max tire width and touring ability

2020-09-29 Thread James Warren
Ah yes, Bill advises well. What you can do for safety while you have this
rack is loop a strap from the rack to the stem and make sure it has
tension. (I use a John's Irish strap for this purpose.) Then if there is
any rack breakage, the rack won't move down and stop the wheel and cause a
crash.

And your bike photo is amazing. It makes me want to go ride. Your bike
model is what the Bike Snob has been enjoying for maybe a year now, and
he's done quite a few blog entries about it.

Query 1: In any case, I’m curious what tire/fender/brake combos folks
 are running to maximize tire width (I *think* it’s 42 w/ fenders) - I’d
also be curious on max tire width without fenders (I’d guess a true 47mm).
It’s got the 41.5 (or so) Fatty Rumpkins on currently, and I may just add
some VO Zeppelins and go from there.

Query 2: Have folks loaded their AHHs for touring? If so, with how much
gear? The latest Riv catalog claims 40lbs as a the right max load (set
against 55lbs I believe for the Sam). I did an S24O this weekend and had
roughly 40lbs before I added firewood. Handled fine, and I know weight
rating are generally conservative (though maybe not Riv’s?)

 Many thanks for the information.

Nate,

You can do a huge range of things on that Homer. It's outstanding. And it
looks like you've already proven that with the firewood S240. Go for it.
And if you reach a limit, you'll know it* and find a solution when you
encounter the limit. (*Because, you've already indicated that you are used

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: 68 AHH on Seattle CL

2020-05-02 Thread James Warren

John,

Two-part answer. If we are talking about the made-in-Japan or made-in-USA AHHs
that one could see in the used market, the answer is:
No my guess is that you would likely ride a 65 cm AHH if you ride a 62 cm Hunq.

The AHH (Japan or US) has a more “traditional” top tube that slopes up 1.5
degrees from seat lug to head tube. The Hunqapillar’s analogous angle is 6
degrees. These extra degrees add a lot of handlebar height. My sizes in USA AHH
and Hunqapillar are 65 cm and 62 cm respectively.

Part 2:
If you are looking at the new AHH that Riv sells, made in Taiwan, there is a
good chance that its 61.5 cm frame will fit similar to the 62 cm Hunq. The made
in Taiwan AHH has a top tube that slopes up 6 degrees from seat lug to head
tube, like the Hunqapillar.

So if you’re ever looking at a Homer, make sure that distinction is clear.

The Homer is an amazing bike either way.

It’s a beauty. Looks like a great bike. My guess is that it’s a 67 cm. Maybe a
69 and they measured Center to Center and called it 68? But it doesn’t look big
enough to be a 69.

I think those were always odd sizes in the big ones, so I doubt a 68 was made.
But who knows for sure?

Re: [RBW] Gotta Hunqapillar question

2020-01-01 Thread James Warren

Diagatubes were standard on the largest two sizes, 58 and 62 cm.

Parallel double top tubes were never standard. They did exist on several
prototypes, because parallel double top tube was almost the design. But late in
the design process, Riv changed it to diagatube before officially releasing the
bike.

Bombadils of the era (which predated Hunqapillar by a bit) did come standard
with parallel double top tube. But eventually those too switched to diagatube
as well (and included diagonal tubes in the rear triangle as well.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Law professor, Riv Rider

2019-12-07 Thread James Warren

My understanding when this forum started was that “Discussing Riv products
specifically and quality ride* reports” (ridden on other brands being OK if
it’s a ride report) was what we’re here for. BOBish philosophies and Grant’s
ideas about cameras would be OT. Unless Riv starts selling a specific camera.

For much of a decade the forum was very well-focused and on topic. The topic
degradation then got worse and that happened well outside of discussions of
elected officials and their policies.

*Ride reports most likely from the types of rides that Rivs are optimized for
(S24Os for example) but given it’s a ride report, some leeway was to be
expected.

Re: [RBW] QB 62 FOR SALE

2019-12-01 Thread James Warren

Not in the market since I have a 64, but FWIW, I did the same coldsetting of
the rear of mine to 132ish (also for an Alfine.) I ended up not liking the
Alfine and put the frame back to regular QB use with a single-cog rear hub. I
just put a 130 threaded Phil FW hub back there, and all is fine.

So the differently spaced QB is fine, and I kinda feel like it’s more versatile.

Atlantis held up against the truck bed. Was part of the buying process almost
exactly 9 years ago.

I’ll bet these practices are more common than we realize.

I jump on Philip's idea and add my desire for lugs at the three points of

Philip's idea:
"Super Legolas.

Lightweight cross-ish bike that takes 55-60mm tires. Longish chainstays,
and adjusted front end to handle the tire upsizing. Sloping top tube. May
come with a Hite-Rite. SUPERMOTO style."

Update: taken on a real ride, I feel those 700x50 Cazadero TC’s will stretch
and be too tight at the chainstay, and I doubt I’ll keep using them on the
Hillborne.

But there’s a piece of data for Hillborne owners. The tire that is just on the
cusp between fitting and not.

There is space, but yes, this is certainly the closest one should get. I like

Re: [RBW] Re: Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2019-07-29 Thread James Warren

The tire clearance issue is huge if there’s a chance you’ll tires that side
(like above 40.)

With its ability to take Big Ben 50’s, even under sidepull brakes, and knobby
Cazadero 42’s, I have used my Hillborne as a mountain bike. I feel like that
bike doubles as uncompromised road and uncompromised mountain bike, which is a
slightly different thing in my mind than all-rounder or hybrid.

If you don’t care about tires that large, then I can’t advise you, because I’ve
never pedaled an Expedition. I can only say that Hillbornes and AHH’s both are
versatile and efficient bikes that I really enjoy riding. (I have both, the
former with Albatross, the latter with drops.)

Yes. The Rams started with the 64 cm and then the 68 cm sizes being offered.
Then in the height of the golden age of Toyo Rivs, 66’s came along in Rams,
some QBs, and I believe even Atlanti!

Re: [RBW] 62cm Hunqapillar complete

2019-02-25 Thread James Warren

Hi,

I know this is a long shot, but you are not by any chance interested in a trade
for a Rivendell (Rosco) Huge Mountain Mixte mountain bike, are you? I have one,
but I would prefer the Hunqapillar frame that’s the platform for the bike
you’re selling. The HMM has either a 64 (maybe 65) cm seat tube, 50 cm chain
stays and an effective top tube similar to your Hunqapillar. The tire
clearances at least match the Hunq. To me, the fork crown seems to match your
Hunqapillar. The MIxte is a great bike, but I think I prefer a top tube. If you
had any interest, I could drive your way to make the trade, and if we traded
frameset for frameset, I’d assume that conditions being equal, the Mixte plus
some cash would equal the Hunqapillar. (Although, the Mixte has this sweet pump
peg on the left seat stay!)

Anyway, no pressure, just checking.

Regards,
James

It'll be the same as the Sugino XD-2 triple, which is 165 mm. Rivendell

It's the same crankarm as the Sugino XD-2 set up as a triple. Just
different rings and a pants guard outer.

Sizewise, I can offer the following: I don't own a Clem, but a family member

Kieran,
Thanks. I’m waiting for the 22T freewheel to come, which will be the norm. For
the singlespeed experience while still having a great steep hill gear, as JB
points out. Right now, it’s temporarily 18 back there. The setup is quite

Re: [RBW] Wide range 3-speed QB refurbished

2019-02-07 Thread James Warren
Because 20/22 is a lot less than 40/32, and I want a LOW lowest gear for steep
dirt hillclimbing.

Also, the following is secondary and wasn’t thought of in the design phase, but
it’s a lot simpler shifting the front since the bike has no derailleur hanger.
That cable-less derailleur as shown would not be in the optimum spot if it had
a cable and were used as a shifter. But as a tensioner, it’s just fine.

Yes, the end result should be the brake pads parallel to the axle adjustment path, but stay angles and lengths do matter (at least to the framebuilder) in that they determine the point on the rim at which the brake pads will hit and thus the angle between the ground (or a line drawn between axle centers) and a line tangential to the rim at that point, parallel to which the brake pads will be set.  Note that the QB concept of not having to adjust brake shoes between different axle positions is facilitated by the relatively large radius of 700c rims.  A smaller wheel will have a larger change in tangent angle at the braking point for a given change in axle position. I wonder if this was noticeable in the 650b bikes that came in the last batch. I expect it would be impossible with small wheels (e.g. 20" or smaller). On Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 4:38:16 PM UTC-8, Philip Williamson wrote:Nope. Re: [RBW] Re: MIT AHH reviews?

Looks amazing. I'm guessing that this bike is awesome in a similar way to the sidepull Hillborne.-Original Message-

Subject: [RBW] Re: MIT AHH reviews?

I've had one for a few months and I absolutely love it. Luckily the winter in Seattle has been very cooperative up until this week. A local shop, Back Alley Bike Repair, built it up for me. This is the first time I've purchased a frame and spec'd a build and it was a ton of fun. This essentially replaces a surly LHT that was a fine bike but also is a tank and I have no plans for a tour. The homer is the bike that drew me to Riv a few years ago, so I jumped at the chance for a more budget friendly version. The AHH splits commuting duties with an Elephant NFE and the ride between the two bikes could not be more different, but they compliment each other very well. My commute is between 8.5-9 miles one way and fairly hilly depending on the route I take. The AHH climbs well enough and I feel very confident bombing hills on it. I usually carry a change of clothes, lunch, coffee, and some tools. Maybe an extra layer depending on the day. I think on the Blug once Grant said he doesn't think a road-ish bike could ride any better than the MIT AHH and I'm inclined to agree. The bike is so smooth. I can barely feel a loaded up sackville on the back and it's not even cinched to the rack. Although I am careful not to overload the front basket or else the handling can be influenced in a way I don't care for. Partial build list:Brakes: tektro r559Brake levers: TRP RRL SRShifters: Shimano bar endCrankset: Velo Orange 46/30Rear Cassette: 8 sp 11-34Rims: velocity dyad machine builtHub: Shimano LX, dyno on frontTires: Compass loup loup pass 38mmHandle bars: Nitto RandoStem: Nitto technomic 90mmSaddle: Brooks B-17 (8 year old one I had lying around)pedals: shimano a530Fenders: SKS P55Cages: King cage & arundel looney binFront light: schmidt edelux ii (bought from riv)Rear light: toplight (i think? i wasn't to picky hear and the bike shop hooked it up)Front rack: mark's rackRear rack: pletscherRear bag: sackville mediumNot great iphone pics->Other thoughts:Sizing - This is a 58. I measure my pbh at 87 which is right in the middle on the size chart. It fits and I'm comfortable. That being said I probably could have gone with a 54.5 frame just as well.Handle bars - the Nitto rando has a ton of positions and is generally fine but I think the reach is just a hair long for me. I'll eventually probably swap them out for something more compact, but I don't think I'll go full upright yet. Tires - compass loup loups roll well but I've averaged a flat about every 3 weeks (more than once to a dinky little piece of wire). They are really the only thing i wish i'd spec'd differently on the original build. I'm swapping them out for some panaracer paselas on Will's advice. Hopefully these will be beefier.Brakes - levers are sweet, plenty of stopping power. I get disc brakes (my NFE has them) but in my [limted] practical experience they can be a pain. I might swap out for some pauls at some point just because i like the way pauls look not for lack of performance from the tektrosSackville medium - is awesome. I've commuted in pouring rain and stuff inside has stayed dry. There's plenty of room for my daily ride especially coupled with the front basket. I use a outershell foldable backpack as a stuff sack of sorts as the sackville stays on the bike.Aesthetics - The color is so nice in person, the web pics don't do it justice. I like, from a purely visual perspective, bikes with a flat Tt and shorter chainstays like the original Homer. But this bike still looks great and you can't argue with the ride quality.Saddle - replaced the old worn B17 with a Berthoud aspin. I couldn't get the tension on the B17 tight enough so it was time. It's a total cliche but this bike is versatile and so practical. I could see myself riding a century on it no problem or also loading it up for a s24o. I honestly don't understand why you don't see more talk about it on the group.

So Barlow Pass were my favorite.
Then Snoqualmie Pass were my favorite.
And now Antelope Hill 55’s are my favorite.

And by favorite, I mean favorite of all tires ever.

[RBW] Was “epoch of Rivster” - Now the Tech Immune Bike

2018-09-28 Thread James Warren

There is a great email today from Riv about the tech-immune bike.

That in a nutshell is why I’ve been a fan of Riv/Bridgestone’s/Grant’s approach
for 27 years now. We may wring our hands over the details like whether the TT
slopes 6 degrees or which frame joints have lugs or the number of top tubes.
Such details may push us into Golden Age or 2TT subgroups. But however that
goes, to me the value that spans all the epochs is the design that is centered
around something that will work well and be easy to fix by not being locked
into any one specialized or dedicated system. I remember a great explanation in
the 1991 Bridgestone catalog about beating dedicated parts systems. They showed
a photo of a bike with DiaCompe, Shimano, and Sugino and said “a combo you’ll
only find on Bridgestones”. They explained how the thumbshifter is less
vulnerable than Rapid Fire and gives more freedom to mix parts and can be made
to work with any brand’s derailleur or freewheel as the bike ages.

The first phrase I read in The Bridgestone catalog that hooked me in 1991 was
“Don’t chase technology.” That principle has guided Riv all along, and it’s why
I’m here.

Aha! Re: [RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-09-26 Thread James Warren

Oh, sorry, I was presumptuous in suggesting to DougP that you had a typo. Sorry
about that.

However, I do think Atlantis does belong in Golden Age.

AND also deserves to be the namesake of the New Atlantean Epoch. That's how
special the Atlantis is. There was a time (99-2000) when it was almost the only
game in town for that style of bike. In the larger sizes, Riv went ahead with
it in 700C, and that scared some of us who worried about tire selection. "We
want real 2-inchers, not weak 700C hybrid 'sort of fatties'". A "29er market"
wasn't a thing that people said yet, but Riv went ahead anyway, saying "Hey,
the 700C wide tire offerings will get better." Rivendell deserves a lot of
credit for that. I think of the Atlantis as the start of the Golden Age. It's
been over 18 years since it came out, and bikes have been incredibly fun in
that time.

Are you considering getting the Roadini now anyway and using one of the longer

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-27 Thread James Warren

I did once. Grey-blue Hillborne with two top tubes and tweed Nigel Smythe
loafer on the rear rack. The commenter specifically referenced the bag in back,
asking if Toto was in there. Not too jerkish though.

A jerk-toned comment once was, "Do you have a picnic back there?" My answer
was, "I don't understand why you wouldn't it."

Yes, the top tube is quite long compared to other bikes in similar size that
used drop bars. Mine needed a stem about 3 cm shorter than what I’m used to.
